I have let to learn the art of compressing files

my friends do it all the time to get more music/videos onto their i pods and to save some space on the hard drive

any suggestions/tips of how to go about doing this?

Windows xp has compressed folders built in the OS. However, I prefer to use winrar (http://www.rarlab.com).

As for compressing audio and video, you'll probably have to convert them to use a smaller bitrate, as the files are already compresses. Remember, converting to use smaller bitrate means loss of quality.
