I really wana go travelling in a few years time. Have any of you been travelling and where's the best place to go? Did you book your own flights, accomodation etc or did you go through a company?
I've got a brochure for a company but it gets expensive. I'd really love to go round the world but their round the world packages cost around £6000 which I can't really afford (although it does include all flights, insurance and visas).
I know going through a company is much easier that organising it yourself but I don't really know where to start looking to organise it myself.

Here's a site I found: http://www.statravel.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/SID-0A536D8E-482B879C/uk_division_web_live/hs.xsl/round_the_world.htm

I am desperate to do this.

My cousin went and planned his own route to all Vietnam and Cambodia, it was cheaper than going as a package. Then he went and worked in New Zealand before he came back and visited Thailand and CHina along the way. He just got an Atlas and A map and pinpointed where he wanted to go and drew a line then booked some flights and took a tent and he was off.

Katy, was there a particular airline your cousin used? I know flights to Asia and Australiasia don't come cheap. Thats one of my main concerns, spending lots of money on flight tickets. How much was his visa's and where did he get them from?
Also, do you know how much it is to renew a passport? I have a 5 year one and it will run out either just before I go or a few months after.
Did he really sleep in a tent?!

I'm considering travelling round Europe after my exams next June/July until mid August.
Any places/cities that I should especially visit? I want to see Rome, Venice and Paris. Where else should I consider going?

On the accomodation front, has anybody stayed in a hostel? Are they a cheap and safe alternative to a hotel?

http://www.realgap.co.uk/Brochure%20Request?source=google&gclid=CPDhgKjJto4CFShEEAodJRkhzg get them to send you this brochure, tick all the countries, and it's free! :)

I ordered it and got it a week later, it gives you loads of ideas on what to do, advice on travelling, where to go, and you can book a trip with them if you want.

good luck!

I forgot about realgap. I sent off for a catalogue a while ago but I thought they were expensive for what you get. They charge loads of administration fees and they charge something like £50 to help fill in a visa application. I think I've still got it somewhere so I'll dig it out and have a look at it.

Thanks for the link. Just looked at the vaccine price list and it's so expensive. £15 just for a doctor to write a prescription  Good job I'm only going to Europe.

Europes a good idea as there are lots of airlines that do cheap european one way flights if you book in advance BMI, Ryanair, FlyBe. plus also theres the eurostar train that's prety easy as well.
I've stayed in Hostals in this country which is really cheap and really safe as you meet people who are doing the same as what you are doing. Also university's sometimes offer accomadation offers, that's what we did in Ireland.

Hello everyone! It is my great pleasure that I found this site in the since it explored me in some tourism in the world. This is an easy to get information and more clarifications through the interactions and suggestions of someone. You can impart your knowledge here too so as others will know. Welcome and be one of the knowledgeable persons.

Awww I'd love to go travelling!
I just get super homesick so I wouldn't handle it!
Shame I'm missing out on something like that
I may get better at leaving home when I go to Uni or something.
I hope :)

Wow this thread is quite useful with its links thanks dudes! :D
I'm going to take a gap year in a couple of years, I can't decide whether to travel the world, or go to Kenya or something like that to work with the orphans :( I know there's no way I can afford both gahhhh.
I'm so excited though! Can't wait to start planning, and I might go on my own to give me the kick of independance :)

xx

Try contacting international charities like British Red Cross to see if they have any spaces for volunteers. You'll probably have to pay for flights and accommodation but you would be safe in the knowledge that you were with a reputable company.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, on places I've looked online for gap year things they're charging up to like £80 a week for self catering :S I'll probably look more closer into it nearer the time, I'll probably go somewhere depending on waht I can afford when the time comes :)
