Rod Stewart has let slip his true feelings about the X Factor contestants - describing their performances as "rubbish".

The rocker stayed tight-lipped when asked to comment on the acts while appearing as a guest on last week's live show, but he has now criticised the show for its lack of real talent.

"To tell you the truth I thought so many of them were rubbish," he told Virgin Radio host Christian O'Connell, not realising that his comments were being broadcast. "I was very disappointed with the Scottish contingent, especially the two boys in the kilts. I didn't want to say it on the programme. The overall quality is nowhere near what it is in the States."

Suddenly realising his mistake, Rod added: "Are we live on air? I wish I was dead. I'm trying to stay neutral."

to be honest i think that's a bit rich coming from Rod Stewart, he's totally lost his voice and it's just cringe-worthy watching him prance around thinking he's some sex symbol!

Totally! All he does is croak! He is just a dried-up old prune, he wasn't even that brilliant in the first place..
