Hit BBC One time warp drama Life on Mars is to end after the next series.

The producers said two endings to the second series had been filmed "to keep everyone guessing until the very end".

Life on Mars, starring John Simm as a modern police officer who has woken in 1973 after an accident, was a critical hit and had audiences of seven million.

Executive producer Claire Parker said the story would reach a "natural and explosive climax". Series two is due to be broadcast early in 2007.

Viewers will learn how Simm's character, Detective Inspector Sam Tyler, became stuck in the '70s.

Writer and co-creator Matthew Graham said: "We decided that Sam's journey should have a finite life span and a clear-cut ending and we feel that we have now reached that point after two series.

"Although it is sad that we have just finished filming Sam's final scenes, it's also been an incredibly exciting few days."

It is reported that Ally McBeal creator David E Kelley is making a pilot based on the show for US audiences.

it is probably a good thing it is going to finish after series two as it will finish on a high while it is still fresh instead of dragging it out over loads of series.

Yeah, I read about this, too.

It is a shame but, like pookie said, at least it will finish on a high.

Still can't help but feel a bit miffed, though. TV isn't that great at the mo.

I cant wait im going to watch this series. It looks really good i never saw the last one. I think its a good idea as sometimes some shows get ruined after more than 2 series.

I've posted spoilers for the second series here. (http://www.soapboards.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=41373)

They have to end it at the end of the second series, as otherwise he'd be in an indefinite coma which would take the edge off this brilliant programme.

You missed a treat with the first series Katy - you'll have to see if you can catch up with it.

it was great viewing! it opened the story up a bit more didnt it? that he has been put there for a purpose and will be sent back when the job is finished. and not to tell anyone why he is there or he will risk being able to get back. it got me thinking why he was there.

great return, plenty of humour from the Gene Genie. Was rather creepy though with all those flashes and that whistling, only problem is after every episode new thoughts and ideas come to my mind as to why he is in 1973
