EastEnders could be bringing back some familiar old faces in a bid to halt a dramatic decline in viewers. Frank Butcher and his daughter Janine Evans are set to make a comeback to Albert Square.

Mike Reid, who plays Frank, has made more comebacks to the soap than any other character. Frank was most recently seen in the show last December, when he seduced Pat Butcher to persuade her not to give evidence at Janine’s trial for the murder of Laura Beale.

Meanwhile Charlie Brooks’ character Janine left without saying goodbye after the trial collapsed. While Pat knew that Janine had murdered husband Barry Evans, she also knew that she was innocent of the murder of Laura, and decided not to give evidence after speaking to Laura’s mum.

EastEnders boss Kate Harwood says the two of them could bring some class back to the show. “Frank is EastEnders at its ripest and I’d love an excuse to bring him in again,” she told The Sun. She says an “older and wiser” Janine returning would also be good for the show. Charlie Brooks was last seen on our screens in the BBC adaptation of the Dickens’ classic Bleak House.
