A furore about overly thin models caused London Fashion Week on Friday to cancel its opening photocall after being criticised for not banning super-skinny women from its catwalks.

The British Fashion Council (BFC), organisers of the five-day event, scrapped the photocall after receiving a barrage of criticism for refusing to follow the lead taken by Madrid and turn away models under a certain size.

"The BFC has cancelled the photocall on Sunday because it is unwilling to add any more impetus to the publicity surrounding this complicated issue. The BFC does not comment or interfere in the aesthetic of any designer's show," it said in a statement.

The growing trend for super-slim -- so-called "size zero" -- models in the fashion industry has whipped up a storm in the middle of the international fashion cycle. London's fashion week follows New York and comes before prestigious Milan and Paris.

British newspapers and health experts have condemned London fashion bosses for failing to follow Madrid and turn away underweight models following protests that girls and young women try to copy their looks and develop eating disorders.

Madrid fashion organisers took the unprecedented step this week of rejecting underweight women, saying they wanted to project an image of beauty and health -- not a waif-like look.

British newspapers have speculated that should the ban be imposed in Britain, some of its most famous names could be barred from the catwalk.

Adding to the uproar, Harry Potter author JK Rowling has launched an attack on the "skinny obsessed world", London's Evening Standard reported. Rowling said she did not want her daughters to grow up to be "empty-headed, self-obsessed clones".

The new Spanish rules say models with a body mass index -- a ratio of height to weight -- below 18 are not allowed to appear at the shows.

The mayor of Milan, Letizia Moratti, has said she will seek a similar ban for Milan Fashion Week -- starting in seven days time -- unless it can find a solution to "sick" looking models.

At long last - somebody has the b***s to say it how it is, this obsession with size zero is not healthy and nobody can say it is, however, I can't see many models being barred from taking part in London Fashion week, unfortunately, it just wont happen. If one designer could just take a stand then maybe the rest would follow.

I understand them not wanting superskinni models. BUt saying noone under a BMI of 18 is just stupid. They should so on the individual or lower the bmi

A hell of a lot of people would be out. considering as people are becoming more obese the average bmi has gone up to 18.

just because the BMI is going down it doesnt mean its healthy to be that. ban them all, thats what i say. it is as unhealthy to be underweight as overweight and why should people with their bones sticking out be allowed as role models. victoria beckham is a head on a stick! she looks like an alien, is that a healthy way to look?

my apologies, i read it wrong!
it is getting a bit mad though when people are now that thin they are being classed as size 0!

Okay, It's great that they want to ban people, but 18 in all cases is mad... i'm 17.5 or something and a size 10... so effectively if i was a model then i'd be out, so i think it needs to be looked at individually... it's still a good idea though... too many people are obsessed with being thin

its because the healthy BMI is ment to be 18 isnt it ? thats what my doctor said anyway and in 16-16.5 or something and size 8, i would be cut out and thats not fair , im a teenager and still growing so maybe they juts meen over 18s .i think its good thought to not have stick thin models anymore because they are bad role models to children and espessially to children who wanto be a midel when they are older . like me , im 14 and am hapy that if i do become a model when im older that i wont have the pressure to be thin and i would hate to be any less than a size 8 anyway !
