Andrew Lloyd-Webber is planning to make more shows in the vein of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, he has revealed.

The director, who is using the show to pick a lead actress for his production of The Sound of Music, spoke out to defend the method. “Maria does not demean musical theatre or these girls,” he told The Times. “Those girls have access to the best acting, singing and dancing teachers.

"One came up to me and said that she’d learnt more on the show than in three years at acting school. Auditions are much more brutal. You’re just told, ‘We’ll get back to you’.”

He also labelled claims that he had already signed a real, professional, Maria as “nonsense”. Emma Williams had been signed, he explained, but would only play two shows a week. “That is no different to any other show in which I use a young female lead. It’s to protect the voice of the actress performing the six shows.”

The veteran said he was so happy with the format that he was considering “a number of offers” from America for shows to pick actors for his own musicals. The newspaper mentioned Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Cats as potential subjects.

He also confirmed he would make another show similar to Maria for the BBC next year and that he would join judges on You’re The One That We Want, a show to choose actors for the Danny and Sandy parts in a production of Grease.
