Don't know if anyone is interested but over the next few days there is a lot of documentaries (eye witness accounts and such) about the 9/11 attacks

2 have caught my eye Tonight 9pm on C4: miracle on stairway B. This is the account of people who walked from the tower despite been buried in the rubble.

And Thursday 9pm BBC1 (can't remember the name) but it gives account of surviours on the floor just and below where the planes hit.

Its hard to believe that it is 5 years already. I watched a documentary about the destination of the planes in the attack. I still found it very emotional to watch

I watched this last night and it was very moving and heartbreaking. I was asking my boyfriend if it seemed like ages from when the first tower fell and when the second did (I know it was only 25 mins) he said everyone was expecting it and it was just a case of when.. I was in labour when all this happened so I only every seen the film footage.. to me both towers fell with in a minute of each other cause I never saw it real time..

I think it is one of those things. Everyone knows where they were when this happened..

I can remeber very vididly where I was and what I was doing when the tragedy happened. I was at my sisters and she was playing elite force on the computer over the internet. she used to play matches with some american users during a game one of them started saying all this stuff about a plane hitting the twin towers and the pentagon. We thought they were making all the stuff up about the terrorists so I went through to the living room and put the telly onto sky news just as the plane was about to crash into the second tower. It was so sureal as if I was sitting watching a movie I just couldn't believe it

Its absolutely terrible that the events of 9/11 have been forgotten. 3500 ordinary decent people yellow/black/white protestant catholic/muslim/hindu/jewish lost their live to some religious nuts. All it was was MURDER] and for what so as we all could live under Sharia Law. Bliars law is bad enough but relious and political freedom our God given (well by my God anyway) rights so we should all join together in memory of the innocent and stiffen our resolve to defeat the terrorist thugs.

I'm in New York in November this year, and I will be once again going to the site of the Trade Centers to pay my respects to all those that lost their lives 5 years ago (as I did the year after it happened). No one should forget why they died and I hope a fitting memorials/tributes are permanently laid where all victims fell.

when we were in new york we went to the site of the world trade centre to pay our respects, it really is quite upsetting going there and seeing the site knowing what used to be there. also they have pictures and messages from kids whos relatives died that day, they made me cry

the only thing that really annoyed me though was the fact that the majority of people were there to pay their respects and remember the victims but a few people seemed to not be showing any respect at all by either trying to promote their businesses (there were 2 or 3 different people there trying to hand out flyers for their restaurants) which i think is appauling!

i agree with both ems and alan that people should never forgot those that died, and its sad to say it but i think that quite a few people already have. i dont know whether they will have a 1 or 2 minute silence on the 11th as its been 5 years and if they do i know ill be taking part in it, however i know a lot of people who wont, like my old school for instance, they never take part in the silence for remembrance day so i wont be surprised if they ignore this one too. it makes me really angry that people can just forget all these victims that lost their lives, and they cant even take 1 or 2 minutes out of their lives to remember them!
sorry about the rant

sorry about the rant Don't apologise Di M - its true. So many people can't be bothered. It seems the same with Remembrance Day - people are far less likely stay silent and remember those that fell in the Great War and WW2 these days too.

When I was there the first time, it was so silent, so surreal. Standing by the steel girders that had stayed in the shape of a cross with the firemans jacket hung on it was very moving and the majority of people would just stand staring at the empty space that was there. We were amazed at the buildings around the site that were relative undamaged. A lot of them in shrouds being repaired, but most of them in tact!

I hope memorials aren't just kept to New York though - yes the majority of people lost their lives there, but others lost their lives at the other sites so they too should have a memorial/tribute.

It is my daughters bday on 9/11. I have tried to explain to her what happened on the day she was born as she sees it all over the news on the day and so many people have given me books/videos on 9/11 for her for when she gets bigger.

Every year on her Bday, I watch the 9/11 one year on video made by the French cameramen.. I don't forget what happened and my daughter won't forget either. it was a historic day for her to be born on

We went to New York with the school in 2005 and we went to see Ground Zero but we wasnt there long because teachers wanted to go off in Centry 21 to do their shopping, i do remember them building something on the site though, looked like flats or offices. When the teachers went off alot of us stayed and talked about where we was on that day so at least we had our pirorities right. We spent about 2 hours around that area (teachers and shops is a nightmare combination) me and the girls i was with went shooping for a bit but spent most of the time sitting by the gates of Ground Zero talking about it with a few other lads.

Although it seems to be forgotten a bit i think alot of people still remember it, i think its going to be with alot of people for a very long time and alot of people will probably tell kids about it so it carries on being remembered

I watch the 9/11 millionaire widows last night, it was shocking how greedy some people are.. one woman was a relationship with another woman who died in 911. Obviously they were not married so the brother claimed the compensation and told her that she could have some of it if she says she was not in a gay relationship with his sister

Another woman, her boyfriend was a police man, and they had a 3 month old baby at the time. His mother told the compensation board that he had no intention of marrying the girl and got all the money for herself.. How can people do that???

I am going to watch the other documentary tonight and next week on C4 is a program called 9/11 liars.. saw a clip, some guy crying saying he lost his wife and the interviewer says "I interviewed her last week":eek::eek:

It was probably one of the most compelling and moving documentaries I have seen on this I agree Siobhan - compelling viewing, done very well. Even the guy, Victor, who couldn't go on and Harry who stayed with him and then they both perished, the one who got out, but felt like a coward because he didn't stay with them both or try and get them out. And then the firefighters that, had they been on one floor higher or lower, when the buildings had collapsed, they would have perished, but just through stopping to help the woman (Veronica), it slowed their descent enough that they were on the right floor at the right time and survived. The Engineer (Frank) and the other guy that was with him that helped save 50 peoples lives, but perished themselves. It showed true courage and character in these people and those that have come through it and survived.

I have found a web version of that movie Loose change which says that 9/11 was a US government thing that was covered up and made to look like terrorist

It was a very good programme i think, alot of inside details because all we ever really knew was about an actual plane flying in to them and not like the views of the inside, it scared me when the plane flew through that office (the bit where you saw it flying at the window and getting closer then eventually flying over that man's desk) i was not expecting to see a plane flying through an office. Sadly i fell asleep 5 mins before the end so im not overly sure of who managed to survive :( what about the dude with the two girls who had that man encourage him to try and get out so he could tell them he was alright, what happened to him?

Very good programme and well handled i think, certainly made me understand the whole thing more as i was only 12 when it happened so didnt really know much

I just found this.. and I thought I might as well post it here instead of a another topic in the General Discussion as it's sort of already here.. :)

----------------

Plans for three huge buildings which will replace the buildings destroyed in the September 11 terror attacks on New York have been revealed.

The skyscrapers will be built in a part of the city called Ground Zero, which is where the twin towers of the World Trade Center used to stand.

They were destroyed in 2001 when armed people took control of passenger planes and flew them into the buildings.

A fourth skyscraper, called the Freedom Tower, will also be built on the site. The work will be finished by 2012.

The towers of the World Trade Center collapsed soon after the planes hit the buildings, killing about 3,000 people.

A memorial park has been built where the towers used to be, and the new buildings will stand in a semi-circle around it.

The tallest of the buildings revealed on Friday will have four diamond shapes on top that will light up part of New York at night.

The three new buildings are designed to look good next to the Freedom Tower - which at 541m (1,776ft) is set to become the tallest building in the United States.

An artist made this image showing how the Freedom Tower will look when it's finished. It's the tallest building in the picture.

That could have been what they were doing when i was there, now i think of it the sort of place where the building i saw was could have been the start of a semi circle around the site of Ground Zero. Im glad they re building around it and not totally on it.

I couldnt believe it lastnight when they said in that film they knew them 3 people were terrorists and were learning to fly yet they got into America with no problems

lets hope the new buildings have easier access to get out. the programme showed how difficult it was to get out with stairwells stopping half way down, then you would have to cross the whole building to find the next stairwell to carry on going down, how ridiculous was that!

We had four 1 minute silence tributes today to remember both the twin towers being hit and when they collapsed. 1.46pm uk time north tower hit, 2.03pm South Tower struck, 2.59pm North tower fell and 3.29pm South Tower fell. Its difficult to imagine that it is five years since this tragedy happened as watching the news the emotions are still very raw

i dont think there was an official one in the uk (like there is on remembrance day), as on the radio it said about the ones happening in america but didnt mention anything about over here. me and my mum just did our own one at home though

I think people should remember it, okay maybe not officially have it but it would be nice if they just did it because its nice to, it didnt just affect America, yeah they got affected the most but it affected everyone in one way or another and there are probably people who would like to have that minuite for them but because its not official many schools wont do it

Nothing happened in our College, not a minute silence or nothing. Which I think is quite disrespectful. It was a huge disaster, that we all watched on tv, read in newspapers, yet like Vicky said, we can't spare 1 minute to just sit and think about them.

Did anyone watch this?? It was on More 4 when I watched it, but it may have been on C4 maybe or E4 too.

I found it amazing, aswell as heartbreaking. Knowing that some people had made the decision to do that, aswell as others who may have just simply slipped and fallen whilst trying to get air.

The Coroner apparently said that no-one committed suicide, they all simply fell, which was a good way of putting it, but many people didn't want their relatives remembered as the ones who jumped. Me, however, I consider that they are people who were simply trying to escape in whichever way they could, and whether than mean jump from the 102nd floor or the 3rd floor, thats what they felt they had to do. As someone on the programme said too, it seemed to be a choice - do I want to stay here and burn/suffocate etc or do I want to make the decision at this point of how I want to die and fall from a window.

They actually managed to track down who they believe the falling man (a famous photo featured in a couple of papers, but it caused such controversy at the time that the picture wasn't really shown again) was and he was believed to be an electrician called Jonathan Briley.

There have been a lot of programmes on because of the anniversary and most of them have appeared to have been roughly about the same sort of thing, but this one really caught my eye.

Was the two towers the views from inside, if it was that was the best one i saw

yes that was the one

I enjoyed the path to 9/11 cause it gave me a background on what led to these attacks.. I think was amazed me most is the first guy who put the bomb in the basement, it was his uncle involved in the tower too.. Ramsi said that he is going to bring them down.. I am sure he was happy when he heard the news from Prison....

I also liked how many things were given to CIA that they never followed up on.. The leader of the Northern terrority told them that it does involve planes and it will be inside NY. The signal would come when he was killed by them.. he was murders 2 days before the attack... surely they could have suspended flights and increased security from that moment!!!

Xx-Vicky-xX
15-09-2006, 09:54
Yeah they said on the two towers one that the CIA knew they were terrorists and learning to fly but they failed to tell anyone else which resulted in them getting in to America with no problems at all which really amazed me

Yeah its amazing really, i mean no one will ever know now if it could have been prevented if people had acted, but its always going to be a what if thing, maybe if they had done something to keep those guys out them 3,000+ people could possibly still be alive, but now people know that top people in America knew about them guys i think some people may lose a bit of faith they have in the police force to protect them.

what about the bloke who wanted to train as a pilot and they thought it was a bit suspicious as he didnt want to learn how to take off or land, just fly it!
why werent these things looked into a bit more.
why would a bloke want to learn how to fly a plane but not take off or land in it, obviously now we know why!

I watched a recorded doc about Rick Rescora - the man who was originally from Hayle, Cornwall, but was the Head of Security for Morgan Stanley, last night. Brilliant. He made everyone practice evacuating the towers every 3 months and predicted that after 1993, the next attack would be from the air. He ensured all bar 6 of the 2,700 people that worked for Morgan Stanley survived the attacks and lost his life whilst doing so - what an amazing man!!

Was that the man who predicted 9/11, i saw that, well some of it as it was on a bit late, what i saw though was good Yep, thats the one Vicky. After the original attack in 1993, he got a group of people he knew together to look at what went wrong before, how bad the evacuation went, making sure every staff member who worked for Morgan Stanley knew which fire exits to take, ensured they practiced so they knew what to do, and stood in the stairwell, whilst everyone was descending the stairs, telling them all through a megaphone to stay calm, to walk, and to keep moving.

When the Port Authority told everyone in the South Tower to go back inside and back to their offices (before the second plane hit), he told his colleagues to keep going, and not to return. Had he not insisted that the Morgan Stanley workers (2,700 of them in all in the Tower that day) had carried on evacuating, so many more lives could have been lost, not just 6 from Morgan Stanley and himself.

It's hard to believe that 9 years have passed this terrible tragedy.

It is amazing how 9 years and it can be forgotten.. My son saw a bit on the news and his reaction was "OMG, that was Awesome!!" to him is was like some action movie with baddies crashing and the good people win in the end.. I don't think he realise how real it all was and for some people who did see this live on the tv as it happen were probably thinking the same thing.. that it was a big hollywood stunt until it emerged that it was 100% real...

It happened the day before Marley's 3rd birthday so Marley's birthday was over shadowed. Marley hates watching news stories about it even now.

Happy bday tomorrow for Marley... Charley was born that day so she doesn't like to watch it either.. while American and the rest of the world mourns, we celebrate as Charley can't go all her life feeling terrible on her bday

10 years later.. was watching some old documentaries and came across the miracle of stairwell B where the firefighter survived as they were helping Josephine Harris down the stairs.. they believed if they didn't stop they would all be dead now... Just found a report from January

Josephine didn't make it to the 10th anniversary.. RIP to all in 911 and to Josephine

I watched the memorials last week and felt like it was only yesterday, that I sat weeping watching the news. 10 years on doesn't heal the pain or dull the memories.
