Pro Maria hired despite reality contest
Sunday, August 27 2006, 21:30 BST - by Dave West

An actress has already been hired to play Maria in The Sound of Music – while a reality television show aimed at finding one goes on.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, currently putting together his West End version of the show, has already given a 12-month contract to 23-year-old professional Emma Williams.

The news indicates the winner of BBC One's How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? will only play a secondary part in the role. She will be given a six-month contract and, while drawing the crowds with her TV fame, needs support from more experienced Williams.

A friend of Williams spoke to The Sunday Mirror. "I've known Emma since she was 14," she said. "She's so excited about appearing in The Sound of Music. I just wish they'd stop this reality show c**p and give her the part straight out."

Another source told the paper: "It is obvious Emma is being lined up to do the bulk of the shows. While the TV contest winner will guarantee ticket sales, Emma will bring the real professionalism."

A BBC spokesman confirmed Williams had been hired but said the reality show winner would play a major part. He said: "After the first six months, maybe Emma will take over and do six out of the eight shows."

I have just read that story on DS. I think its shocking, what is the point of putting those poor girls through all that heartache and stress as well as conning the public into thinking that one of the girls is going to be maria when they already have someone for the role. This farce should be scrapped now

Im extremely dissapointed about this, i have been watching them and the girls are fantastic, there was never any mention of this on the show so its been misleading to fans and the girls involved, they should just have two winners from the show and have them rotating, casting another girl fans of the show dont know i think will turn people away its like when you go to a concert to see your favourite star, no one is interested in the support act your there to see one person not the other no body.

If this is true then the BBC is perpetrating fraud on the British public on a grand scale.

I am disgusted.

Its the girls I feel sorry for they auditioned for the show hoping to become a star of a west end show and now all that hard work will be for nothing. What is the point of andrew lloyd webber holding this reality show if the winning girl doesn't stand a chance of appearing on stage. Has any heard this girl that is supposed to be playing Maria sing. What will they do if the winning girl is a better performer than the actress they have already picked

I'm gutted that Leanne went tonight but I did agree with what Andrew Lloyd Webber said to her that he felt she was too young to paly Maria at this time. I hope Sibohan goes next week, I'm really begining to dislike her now although she is a good singer she is only in the competition because that Ian David fancies her

i found this quote from david ian, the man who devised the show, from a newspaper article........

"Whoever is chosen as our Maria will be the star of The Sound Of Music at the Palladium six nights a week on a marathon run. There has been some confusion out there among certain newspapers. We have not secretly chosen our Maria already.

"What has happened is that Andrew and I have picked an alternate Maria, a professional singer called Emma Williams who will do two matinee shows a week when the curtain goes up.

"In a run that will hopefully go on for two years it would be impossible for our star to appear at every performance.

"In any long-running musical there is always an alternate performer, a stand-in, for the star."
