MARTIN and Sonia Fowler are to quit EastEnders six months earlier than planned in an explosive storyline next spring.

We can reveal that the pair - who were not due to bow out of Walford until the autumn - will now depart in March.

It seems the scriptwriters have come up with a great exit plot for the troubled pair, and it needed to happen quickly.

The big question is, will Martin and Sonia leave Albert Square together or go their separate ways?

An insider tells us: "James Alexandrou and Natalie Cassidy were always going to leave the show at the end of next year, but a decision was taken to bring their exit forward because it tied in to a great plot.

"Their characters will not be killed off and the door is being left open for either of them to make a return.

"No one knows whether they'll head off as a couple or hot-foot it away in opposite directions. One thing's for sure, it'll make great viewing."

The couple's dramatic exit will now come just a couple of months after Martin's mum - grim-faced battleaxe Pauline (Wendy Richard) - departs for good.

Speculation is rife that she will be carted off in a coffin, so we reckon Martin's farewell will be tied in with her death.

Despite branding Pauline an "evil old cow" earlier this month, our guess is that her death (or permanent departure) will make him realise just how important family is. So taking Sonia and Rebecca by the hand, he'll head off into the sunset.

Other options include him going to America to see sister Michelle or being poached by a supermarket chain to run its fruit and veg counter.

As for Sonia, she'll be so busy trying to decide whether she is or isn't a lesbian that her head will explode.

I agree. It seems like the only logical explanation as well. Except I don't know what they are going to do when Sonia comes back and Martin stays out there. Are we supposed to believe than Sonia will be able to leave Rebecca?!

That's really bad news. I'm sad that EE is losing all the characters with history. I don't give a damn about Stacey or Dawn or Bradley. I don't know them so I don't identify with their problems but I've known Sonia and Martin since they were kids and I've been with them through all their worries and traumas. It's good to have some family storylines instead of all this crap with people running around golf courses and hiding in wardrobes. :wall:

I hope Natalie returns quickly and somehow persuades James to come back too.

Maybe one of them will kill Pauline (hence her death) then they will tell the other and try and hide it :p but in the end they get found out and one goes to jail :p

Do you think Pauline will be buried with her fruit bowl

Sounds good to me. I'd rather see them go early, than watch their characters go even more down hill than they had of late. I don't think I want to see Martin and Sonia getting back together though. There wouldn't be any trust there again if it was me in Martins shoes.

I wonder if the "explosive" storyline will be another car journey out of Walford, just like Demi and Rosies explosive exit and all those more recently before them too. EE bosses certainly seem slightly obsessed with that word, even though so far, I haven't seen anything explosive about recent exits.

if the millers getting in the bappen to back of a car and leaving is an a example of explosive exits ,well i dread to think what they have in store for the next explosion, they will probably have them peddle of on bikes and fall over the handle bars as they go

Now we're getting somewhere. A further 50% would be appreciated, but I guess we can't have everything.

As the scriptwriters have bought their contracts to an end to coincide with pauline's exit I would have thought maybe Pauline oversteps the mark (again) calling Sonia and martin everythign under the sun and somehow during an almighty row she falls, trips and dies or they do a Steve/Saskia or Chrissie and hit her over the head with a hard object and accidently kill her!!!

I think it's quite bad that all our favourites are leaving i mean i have taken to the new characters but the likes of Ruby etc why are they leaving? She's been great and I like her character alot :)

I am tired with all this "Will they leave together or leave to go their seperate ways?" lark, it's been used for Kat and Alfie and when Little Mo was leaving too, the scenario has just got boring..

I am glad that both Martin and Sonia will leave 6 months early..i hope they leave together with Rebecca.

Good. Its honestly all i can say. I have just started watching EE again, as the whole stacey/sean stuff i like, but Sonia and Martin just bore me now, and just yeh, the sooner the better i say.!

I wouldn't say I like Sean as he seems to give me the creeps a bit for some reason.

I think Tanya Turner should join EastEnders that would be a laugh :)

To each his own. Personally I'm sick of Stacey and Bradley. I much prefer characters who I care about because I know their history. We are soon going to be left with characters that have only been there for 2 minutes. Much better to concentrate on giving better storylines to some of the others, instead of ramming Bradley down our throats in every episode. I will miss Sonia and Martin and I hope Sonia hurries back and by then they will have found decent writers ....
