Boycie and Marlene are growing used to life in the country – in fact, it almost suits them – as John Sullivan's Only Fools hit spin-off sitcom returns for a new series.

Boycie subscribes to Farmers' Weekly, where he is fascinated to learn that artificial fertiliser could double his crop yield and his profit. Despite it being an organic farm, he invests in several sacks, but is seen unloading them by his dastardly neighbour, Llewellyn.

At the end of a beautiful day, Boycie is relaxing with Marlene and his staff, and presents delighted rock-band protégé Tyler with a new guitar, confident that Winterdown farm will produce a bumper harvest.

However, a call from the Agricultural Office dampens his spirits when he learns that an anonymous caller has made claims about ethical improprieties on the farm, and an inspector will be visiting to check on his farming techniques.

The next morning, a tetchy Boycie admits that he's not sleeping well. Elgin, Bryan and Jed are concerned by his ill-humour and Bryan musically tells him if he has anything on his mind they are good listeners.

Driven wild with lack of sleep and worry about being sent to jail where the Driscoll Brothers are bound to have contacts, Boycie confesses to Marlene that he has cheated the EU. She suggests his usual way out of trouble – bribe someone – but, instead, he settles for some of Elgin's sleeping potion.

Finally, he gets a good night sleep but the boys forgot to mention the potion's side effects...

John Challis and Sue Holderness star as Boycie and Marlene, with Jack Doolan (Tyler), David Ross (Elgin), Ivan Kaye (Bryan), Pete Heppelthwaite (Jed), Ella Kenion (Mrs Cakeworthy) and Alan David (Llewellyn).

Opening the local paper, Boycie smiles greedily at the headline "Mayor Resigns Over Sex Scandal At Town Hall". Spotting an opportunity to further his prospects of officialdom, Boycie seeks his staff's help and advice on how to become a prominent figure within the community, as John Sullivan's comedy continues. But they are interrupted by Llewellyn who has arrived to complain about Boycie's dog and also to announce that he, too, is going to stand for Mayor.

Whilst doing the school run with Tyler, Marlene catches the eye of an admiring student, Simon, who consequently offers to help Tyler with his course-work. Busy working on Tyler's trigonometry homework, Simon is distracted by Marlene. Desperate to spend more time in her company, he invites her to participate in a new school initiative, asking parents to become more active in school life.

Jumping on the bandwagon of a great publicity stunt, Boycie decides to volunteer, too. Boycie thinks the sports department would benefit from his experience, so he signs up to help out with the rugby team. Little does he know that Llewellyn is the team's coach.

Meanwhile, Simon's infatuation with Marlene knows no bounds – he confronts her about his feelings. Unfortunately for him, Boycie catches the scene.

Boycie is on the warpath, as the comedy continues in John Sullivan's Only Fools spin-off.

Boycie is fed up that his staff never seem to be doing any work. He decides that the next person he catches sitting on their behind is for the push – and smirks gratifyingly when he overhears Marlene asking Mrs C to lift her feet while she hoovers underneath.

Farm manager Elgin is aghast when he hears that Mrs C is being sacked and hastily informs the Boyces that Mrs C is a witch and, without her, the farm is vulnerable to dark forces. Boycie shrugs off Elgin's warning but, sure enough, there's a thunderclap overhead when Mrs C leaves the farm. Then strange things begin to happen...

Beth and Tyler are off to Ludlow races to protest about the treatment of innocent animals, as John Sullivan's Only Fools spin-off comedy continues. Beth also announces that they have both become vegetarian. Marlene then arrives, dressed in fur and leather, and tells Boycie to take a good look at her as it is the last time she will ever wear animal skins.

Elgin, Bryan and Jed are worried. There is a problem with the number of birds in their crop field, but Marlene tells them the birds must not be harmed – oh, and they're now vegetarians too!

Marlene's quest to embrace traditional values continues as she enrols on a mail-order Reiki healing course. She wants to create a massage parlour and beauty salon at the farm.

Jed has taken control of the bird problem and puts the finishing touches to a scarecrow in the barn ... just as Beth peers in and mistakes the scarecrow for a human body.

There's much excitement at Winterdown Farm and a sense of anticipation hangs in the air as Marlene oversees the pinning up of bunting while the family awaits the arrival of Tyler's French exchange buddy, as John Sullivan's comedy continues. Boycie can't work out what all the fuss is about until he sees a picture of the boy – Marlene, Mrs Cakeworthy and even Beth are all very excited about meeting him! Tyler is deeply unmoved by all the fuss and has no interest in France or the French.

To get out of his return visit to France, Tyler is advised by Elgin, Jed and Bryan to get Beth pregnant. However, when he insists he can't go along with that, Elgin gives him another idea – to get engaged to her instead. Marlene is horrified.

The family and staff all gather together in the front room to welcome their new guest. Marlene, in particular, has made a very special effort to dress up for the occasion. The doorbell rings, Tyler answers and ushers in Laurence – who is not exactly what they were expecting.

Boycie faces his worst nightmare in the final episode of John Sullivan's comedy The Green Green Grass. Marlene has been in contact with her sister in Peckham (thereby breaking the ultimate house rule) but, worse still, she's coming to visit.

Pertunia and Boycie have never seen eye to eye. She considers him beneath her sister; he fears her man-eating tendencies. And things don't get off to a good start when Boycie insists that she wears a blindfold during their journey from the station so that she can never reveal where she stayed.

Bryan takes an instant shine to the Peckham glamour puss, but Boycie cuts short his romantic daydreaming, insisting that he, Elgin and Jed patrol the farm just in case they've been followed.

As Marlene and Pertunia catch up, Pertunia recalls the night in the Nags Head when a bottle of Champagne was sent over to her by admiring brothers. Marlene assumes it was the Trotters but Pertunia corrects her – it was the Driscolls.

Boycie, meanwhile, finds all his staff in the barn tied up with rope, their mouths taped. A figure emerges from the shadows and, without turning, Boycie knows his time is up. The Driscolls have finally tracked him down.
