EASTENDERS misery Martin Fowler – aka JAMES ALEXANDROU – failed to see the funny side of a great supermarket prank.
The actor lost his rag after a cheeky member of staff spotted him picking up groceries with his new girlfriend, co-star KARA TOINTON, who plays Dawn Miller.
The shelf-stacking manager was inspired to make an announcement hailing the Walford market greengrocer over the store’s PA:
“Could Martin Fowler please go to the fruit and veg counter, I repeat, could Martin Fowler please go to the fruit and veg counter.”
Hats off to the amateur comic — I haven’t laughed so much since PAUL DANAN was accused of forgetting to pay for a pair of underpants by a Zara security guard.
James and Kara had nipped into the Waitrose store in Whetstone, North London, after a busy day filming at Elstree Studios.
A shop source told me: “It was priceless. James was paying for his grub with Kara when the announcement rang round the shop.
“James walked up to the duty manager on his way out and asked sarcastically if there was another Martin Fowler working there.
“Then he started moaning — saying he was there to do his shopping, not get abuse. It didn’t help that the staff were cracking up around him.”
Unfortunately for the prankster, his boss didn’t see the funny side.
He was hauled in by the manager and told his promising career as assistant section manager was at risk.
I contacted James and he was happy to admit to his grumpy response, which he blamed on a long day.
He joked: “I’ll be getting my fruit and veg from Walford market from now on.”
Just as well James has seen the funny side and not made a formal complaint.
He might be looking for a Waitrose job himself in a couple of years.
