He’s been half-strangled, had his head flushed down the toilet and been doused in tomato ketchup in a string of Mitchell brothers super-hardman stings - so is it any wonder Ian Beale’s had enough?

According to reports, EastEnders veteran Adam Woodyatt is set to quit the BBC soap. The 37-year-old actor has apparently told TV bosses he’s fed up of being “Walford’s favourite whipping boy” and will not be renewing his £310,000-a-year contract. His decision comes just weeks after his close friend Wendy Richard announced she was quitting her role as battle-axe Pauline Fowler.

An insider told the Sunday Mirror: “Bosses are keeping it top secret as they’re desperately trying to talk him round, but he’s made his mind up. Adam has always been very close to Wendy Richard, and her decision to go has spurred him on.“

Adam first threatened to quit the show three months ago as he was tired of his character being singled out for “special treatment” by the Mitchell brothers. “Adam took his screen fate on the chin to begin with, but he’s had enough now,“ the insider added. “After 21 years on the show he’s tired of being the laughing stock of Walford and feels he deserves more respect.”

Sorry Ian, mate, but it’s hard to respect a man whose idea of excitement is a new range of microwaveable sausages.
