ITV is plotting an audacious swoop for Big Brother in a bid to arrest its ratings decline.

Simon Shaps, the ITV director of television, is understood to have begun courting Endemol, before formal negotiations for a new Big Brother contract begin later this year.

Channel 4 has owned the rights to the hit reality format since it began in the UK seven years ago, but it does not have a rolling contract with Endemol and negotiations for the next deal are expected to begin from the autumn...

...A source familiar with the situation said Mr Shaps would put up an "almighty fight" to win the format.

"Simon is desperate to buy it," the source said. "He is going to put up an almighty fight for it.

"Big Brother is with Channel 4 at the moment and Endemol is quite happy with them but technically it has no home after next year. When it comes to pure financial muscle, ITV could probably beat Channel 4."

If its to take over the place of Love Island please do it ITV. I dont think Peopel will really mind what channels its on really. Just ITV will be geting more ratings with a showe as big as Big Brother.

Big brother is channel 4-ITV will kill it this is what huge companys like ITV do they get something that works well with channel4 so they take (and take my word for it) they ruin it and turn it into trash like CLI (no offence to CLI fans)or celebrity wrestling.

ITV is in trouble when it needs to resort to buying big brother to get ratings

Thats rubbish. ITV will ruin the show for definate. theyd prob get rid of BBLB and BBBM. Theyd change the things that make big brother big brother like dermot and davina. C4 should keep big brother.

Channel 4 should keep Big Brother. I can't see ITV getting it really though - its not as if ITV has a great history with reality shows, so why would Endemol risk ruining the Big Bro format by putting it over with ITV. If they are sensible, they will keep it to Channel 4.

dont bite the hand that feets, channel 4 has done endemol good for the past 7 years... they would be fools to move to ITV now. Its like moving Eastenders to channel five or Coronation Street to BBC 2, it just shouldn't happen!

What! Big Brother on ITV! What are they thinking!
ITV Will just ruin it! Its a Channel 4 show so it should stay with channel four. ITV are just jelous that they cant think up a programe just as good that will get as many viewers. And god knows they have tried and they've all failed! lol. Channel 4 founded it so ITV would be stealing it its just not fair. Channel 4 have far better programes that the **** they play on ITV. They have really boring Soaps and really boring dramas that they chuck in now and again and Channel 4 have really cool... but weird documentrys that i love watching! there is no comparision. Hope ITV dont get it because i dont think it'd watch it!

The rights for Big Brother should stay with Channel 4 though (but maybe make it shorter again next time, as to me, its gone on far too long this time)

I would. We all have our opinions and while you might like Emmerdale and the Drama premieres, i dont. Which is why i said it. I used to love Corrie and they did have some good drama's, but in the last 3 - 4 years it has really gone down hill. And some of the rubbish they put on now is not even worth watching in my opinion.

I agree. It has gone on for a while and it is getting a bit boring now. The thing that annoys me is the amount of people they keep messing about with. Ok they had to put in Sam and Aislyene beacause Shabaz and Dawn left but when replacing George they had to put in another 4! Or if that wasnt the reason then some weird entertainment stunt which pushes the numbers right back up again resuting in double evictions the whole time. And this new ex housemate thing is annoying me. Maybe they should stick with 8-10 week or however it usually goes on for.

I think we could say the same about all programming on TV at the moment though - the majority of my viewing now belongs in the hands of Sky channels, because I feel there is a poor selection of programmes being shown at the moment.

It can happen BB.. Over here our main irish channel was shown Corrie for years and then they have it taken off them and given to another channel... They have taken up EE but as they could show all the shows, it is falling in the ratings..

TV exec will sell their shows to whoever gives them the most money and to hell with what the audience wants.. Trust me, we lost F1 on our irish channel and the coverage on ITV is just not as good

Thinking about it - look at Neighbours. It was ailing a few years back on Network 7 and then Network 10 took it on and revived it to where it is today. It is possible (although I've stopped watching Big Bro - just like i did all the others)

yeah i agree. I feel the same about BBC at the momtns as i do about ITV. Some of their Shows have really gone downhill. Like you said Sky channels do have a more popular selection of shows.

BB changing channels will have some affect though its still the same show. It propably will keep the same team that work behind the show as they've been doing it for years , but at the same time it would have new producers and ITV will have their way of showing it and what to do with it so it will change slightly. In my opinon probably for the worse but different people like different things.

Itv should leave Big Brother alone and start their own show cause it belongs on CH4

i dont think it would be the same on ITV because i think it would get changed around!
