EastEnders actress Wendy Richard has quit the soap over her character Pauline Fowler's wedding storyline, it has been reported.

The breaking point for the 63-year-old was the decision that widow Pauline was to remarry, she told The Sun.

Richard, who appeared in the first episode of the show on February 19, 1985, told the newspaper: "I just couldn't believe that Pauline would remarry - anybody. And I just made myself ill fretting about it."

She continued: "I had sleepless nights, because I have never, ever had a cross word with anyone, ever, on that show - no artist at all."

She announced she would have to resign after learning she would remarry.

She thought it would be "disloyal" to her first husband, "Arfur", who was played by Bill Treacher.

She agreed to stay and do the wedding - "because I've always put EastEnders first".

It has been previously announced that the actress will bow out this Christmas in a dramatic storyline.

I've read this too, but I think there is more to it like all the originals and some of the ones who have been in 2 years or more are fed up with the way things are run, bad scripts and lack of viewing time etc
Billy Murray also left after a disagreement over scripts

Oh come on, there must be far more than this, as I dont see her leaving just over a remarriage in the script. So must be something else as she's been in it since day one.:readtheru

I think that the marriage was the main reason, and I am with her and her opinion, its like you could not ever see her mother Lou getting married again could you.

She has been seen spotted talking to Letita Dean on holiday maybe they was talking about it and how bad the scripts have got, after all they killed or written out all the family those charaters had !
