Dawn and Ian

I've just moved back from Spain and am trying to catch up with EE. I understand most stuff that's happened but why is Ian pretending that Dawn is his wife??

Ian told the members of the local charity organisers that he was married to Jane, only he didnt tell Jane because he knew that she would be furious at him, so he hired Dawn to pretend to be Jane because she needed money to go on holiday with Carly.
