View Full Version : Card Fraud
Well guys, dunno if this has happened to anyone else but thought I would post a warning:
At the start of last week I went to a petrol station, filled up with petrol, and paid on my debit card.
Yesterday, I found out that my account and overdraft had been wiped out (£858.69) with someone in italy using my card.
Reported it to the bank and police, they reackon my card had been cloned - and werent surprised as they had approx 25 people complain of the same thing - who had all used the same petrol station (needless to say I wont use it again!)
Just wanted to warn you all, even when you think your safe paying by debit card anything can happen! I will get my money back but it could take about 3 weeks!
my bank have recommended that I use a credit card in shops as its easier to get your cash back off the fraud people. Also, its not like they have taken your actual wages as with a debit card, just credit (which is really the banks). thankfully Id spent most of my wages, but its still left me with no cash until its sorted. at least I would still have had that if I have used my credit card.
anyways, just a warning guys!!
What petrol station was it? I know Shell have stopped using chip and pin in some stations because of major fraud.
Hey NB,
its called Jet, dunno if they have them outside of walsall but there is a couple there - and it wasnt chip n pin either, I had to sign the slip as they dont have the chip and pin machine.
Lord knows how they did it, but i felt slightly better when I found out it wasnt just me but everyone that used the garage.
they figure the card had to be cloned as the pin wasnt known.
uuggh. am so p**sed off! get the keys to my new house tom, couldnt of been at a worse time!
Crikey (for want of a better word) Ems - thats awful.
I'm still surprised at the number of places not using chip and pin still (but then that isn't really going to stop card fraud altogether). We have Jet garages down here too. Though it annoys me that we are advised to use credit cards as its quicker dealing with the fraud aspect of it - it shouldn't be though and like you said, you are left out of pocket until its sorted, which for a lot of people can cause real damage to their debts and take a long time to recover from.
Is your bank doing everything they can to help you through this difficult time, as I know a lot of people have had problems with charges on their account etc before.
The bank have increased my overdraft, but I will struggle to claim the overdraft charges back as I wont know what they are for a month or so - which will be after I put my claim in! think I will have to give that part up as a lost cause!
in fairness to the bank they said it would usually only take a few days to sort out, but becase of the number of claims theyve had from my bank alone it will take longer to process.
Ive reported it to the police as well and the fraud squad are looking into it. Thing is, it was one of the regular guys that served me that day - not a temp or anything. I dont mind telling you I almost went and put their windows through!
I Know someone who had that happen to them at an Esso garage, not Jet though. we dont have them up here. It happens pretty regularly nowadays i think, everyone has to be really careful.
I just hope proper justice is served to him, not some stupid lenient "sentence" to try and stop him from doing it again. The number of people that could have been affected by this is scary
Well it shouldnt be too hard for the boys in blue to track down the offender. I thought everywhere had to use chip and pin since 14th Feb. Dont worry about your overdraft the bloody banks will know to the last penny what they owe you

my friend had her card cloned in a petrol station near us and she had used chip and pin!!
about 10 others had it happen in the same place and the fraud squad were investigating!
some had really large sums taken from their account too!
Looks like they're not too secure at all: http://www.itv.com/news/index_f22cdc956e83585c7e1c4b38ca904ee6.html

The thing that concerns me though, is the liability side of things - if your card is cloned and your pin extracted, could banks say that the the pin had been kept with the card etc, so try to divert blame from themselves, and possibly the repayment of the fraudulent spends???

It wouldn't suprise me. Banks will try anything to squirm out of responsibility and liability.
Once I took out 5k to buy a car. One of the twenties was a fake, so I took it back to the bank. They accused me of trying to pull a fast one! I had a good 30 min argument at the cashiers before I finally got pissed off and told them I want to close all my accounts now, especially my business account. All of a sudden I had the bank manager kissing my ****.
Banks are scum.
We had "fun" with our old bank about our business account when they totally messed up, and when i had to withdraw a lot of cash, they didn't band it correctly and it was short. The fun I had trying to convince them, that it was actually their error and not me pinching it was a nightmare. I kicked off about it though, arranged the transfer of all funds to a new business account in a different bank and suddenly they were asking me what they could do to keep my business!! When you have a bank clerk on the telephone banking unable to understand what a BACS transfer is - something is seriously wrong with the training in the place!

round my area there has been lots of card fraud from cash machines. a little machine is plugged into the cash point and it is virtually undetectable, you put your card in and pin number. it reaads this then you go away not nowing anything, then the next day your account is emptied.
which is very annoying.

This has happened to me too, I was visiting family in somerset, someone cloned my card in a petrol station and then....wait for it this is funny.......paid off there £300.00 bt landline telephone bill....so when I reported it the police were able to track it back to the exact address...he'd done a few more & he got done for it.
I'm with RBS they were wonderful & put the money back into my account within the hour.

Over here their was a huge scam years ago, explain how it is done here: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/scams/atmtheft.htm
they got away with millions, without cloning cards and without you known you gave your pin away

it seems to be a lot of the cloning is done in petrol stations, not really sure why but it doesnt leave you with much confidence about chip and pin does it?
i think i am going to start using cash in petrol stations from now on, just in case!!!!!
Yeah!!!!!!!!!
Finally got my cash back!
Im so happy!
Petrol station still up and running though
it was on the news and in the paper, but they weren't allowed to name it which i think is pants. how else are people going to know to avoid it?

They quoted "legal reasons", which I personally believe to be a load of crock.
I found out that the same thing happened at a DIFFERENT Jet petrol garage in Solihull, which is not far from where I am.
I know they are usualy franchised but it all seems a bit dodgy to me!

Thats ridiculous - what legal reasons could they have for not being able to state which garage which was involved, unless of course, its because of the alleged crime and although it took place at the garage itself, it was one of the employees that has committed the crime :searchme:

Shell were pretty open about what happened at their service stations, even though it was their employees involved. I guess the station just doesn't want bad publicity
oh my gosh i just read this thread im so gald you got your money back though.
Shell were pretty open about what happened at their service stations, even though it was their employees involved. I guess the station just doesn't want bad publicity Obviously worried about the Jet name being tarnished and therefore their pockets not being lined with as much money no doubt, due to people taking their custom elsewhere - rather than thinking of the people that line their pockets in the first place.
Just opening this thread up a bit - on a wider issue, the level of fraud these days amazes me. There's plenty of Accident Claims companies that have sprung up and the fraudulent claims they do is amazing. I also read that they are a front for money laundering. Just amazed that we don't have the legislation to tackle this kind of fraud.
