The BBC has axed Top of the Pops after 42 years on the air, blaming the proliferation of 24 hour music channels for the show's decline.

The last edition of the long-running music programme will air on July 30, 2006, it was confirmed today by BBC director of television Jana Bennett.

"We're very proud of a show which has survived 42 years in the UK and gone on to become a worldwide brand but the time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion," said Bennett. "Although we bid a fond farewell to Top of the Pops we remain as passionate as ever about reflecting the vitality of contemporary music across all our channels."

An internal review of the BBC's music output concluded that Top of the Pops "no longer occupies the central role it once did" in a "rapidly changing musical landscape," according to a BBC statement.

"Over recent years the show has faced ever increasing competition from multi-media and niche musical outlets which enable viewers to consume music of their choice any time night or day in a way that Top of the Pops simply cannot deliver in its current weekly format," the corporation added.

Yes I remember the dayw when we only had 3 channels to watch on our Black and White TV!!!!!!!

TOTP used to be THE prgramme to watch, but it's pants now. When I was a youngster, you were really cool if you managed to get into the audience.

Top of the Pops is rubbish now, and there are so many music channel for those who want them.

I hope that TOTP2 survives, though. The music of my youth, lol

The axing of this show makes me wonder how long Channel 5 will still with CD:UK when it relaunches and crosses over from ITV1. :hmm:

I always used to watch it on a friday night, when MTV and others weren't freely avaliable. I stopped watching because it got too 'poppy' for me. It'll be sad it's going as it is memories from childhood but that's the way of the world i guess :(

Was just watching 8 out of 10 cats and they were talking about it's axing saying Jimmy Saville would turn in his grave and then pretended to suddenly realise he wasn't dead and then said what's he doing in a grave. Made me smile anyway. Like your banner too. Although she changed her name to Sarah Jayne Dunn just recently - as I guess there's already another actress named Sarah Dunn.
