LUCY Benjamin is set to make a dramatic return to EastEnders, The People can reveal.

She has been approached by BBC bosses over a return to her role as Lisa Fowler following her stunning victory on TV's Celebrity X Factor.

Actress Lucy, 35, was controversially axed from the soap almost four years ago for "storyline reasons" by the then executive producer Louise Berridge.

But the regime now in charge of the BBC soap are convinced Lucy's return would be a ratings winner.

A source revealed: "Lucy's victory on Celebrity X Factor showed just how popular she still is with the British public.

"For a TV soap like EastEnders to ignore one of their former stars when she has just received this sort of acclaim would be madness.

"There have been rumours before about Lucy's return to Albert Square, but this time things are much more concrete." Lucy's X Factor triumph has given her career a new lease of life after it spiralled out of control amid sex and drug revelations.

The People revealed in February 2004 how she snorted cocaine before joining a topless model in bed.

She had hit a lowpoint after splitting up from boyfriend Steve McFadden, alias EastEnders hardman Phil Mitchell. Former pal Emma Kearney said at the time: "She needs to stop partying and focus on getting her life back together."

Now a rejuvenated Lucy has done just that. When she was written out of the soap, Lisa disappeared to Por tuga l t o escape Phil Mitchell's clutches, taking their daughter Louise with her. But despite the vanishing act Lisa was not killed off in the storyline, leaving the way free for an eventual return.

At the time the actress admitted: "It's a huge stigma being sacked. It implies you've done something wrong."

She is currently four months pregnant with her baby by oil trader Richard Taggart, 29. The pair met a year ago on a flight to Dubai and got married in March.

Pals say Lucy has told EastEnders chiefs she would love to rejoin the soap, but only after her baby is born.

One friend said: "Lucy is delighted to be returning to East- Enders. But she has made it clear that giving birth later this year is her first priority.

"Lucy is still very ambitious in her career and believes she can juggle being a mum and a soap star perfectly well."

A spokesman for Lucy said last night that a return to Albert Square was "speculation".

An EastEnders spokesman said: "We never discuss plans for future storylines."

I only watched a few episodes of X Factor (Celebrity edition), I didn't see it when Lucy won. But some of the songs I saw her sing were quite good. I am surprised Chris Moyles didn't win. I loved the first song he did. Maybe he got worse as time progressed?!

Do you think the reason she won was because she appeared on EE? or because of her singing voice? I didn't like her character much in EE. I don't know why they would want to bring her back. They are moving on now, bringing great new characters into the show. It feels like things are progressing. It's like taking a step backwards.

Also you can see where the storyline would go. It's bound to involve Phil again, and probably a repeat of the same old story. What else is there to do with her?! As long as she has Louise, there's always going to be Phil.

Im Glad Lucys comming back, she was amazing on X Factor, especially her performance of See The Day! It would be good to see Lisa Fowler back on the Square, the look on Paulines face! Does Lisa know that Mark is dead?

But she has made it clear that giving birth later this year is her first priority.

that made me laugh. What else is going to be top priority.

I think it would be nice to see Lisa return i quite liked her character, she was better than some of the people who are in it at the minute.

would good to see her back but can't see it making sense storylines wise. The only person she really knows in the square anymore is Phil and can't see Lisa rushing back to see him! Also would Lucy be ok actin alongside her ex?

i pesonely didn't mind he most of the time, but i do think that the time was right fo he to go,only seen her on x factor once, didn't think she deserved to win,she should have been voted of that night,i think she only won cos she was once .EE.

It would be nice to see her back, Lisa and Phil on set would be a stunning storyline but what about Lucy and Steve off the set? Didnt they have a bitter break up in real life?

I am glad that Lisa may be returning, why Louise Berridge sacked her is beyond me! She was a brilliant character and a great asset to the show, and i think it will be a ratings winner if Lisa returned. She was brilliant in the Who Shot Phil? storyline and her running off to Portugal with Louise away from Phil. I hope Lucy will return to EE after her baby is born.
