The love that ended in tragedy
Dean Kirby

After their relationship broke down, Joshua Thompson, 18, went to 15-year-old Kally Gilligan's home armed with a shotgun and blasted her in the head before turning the weapon on himself.

Kally, known to friends as Kal, died on the doorstep. Her mum Tracy was inside their home in Orion Place, Lower Broughton, Salford. Joshua died in an ambulance on his way to hospital.

The couple had been together for two years and Joshua was left heartbroken after she ended the relationship two weeks ago. It is understood she had started seeing somebody else.

Local residents said Joshua was obsessed with Kally and a few days before the shooting had sent her a 20-page letter. One neighbour said he had written: "If I can't have you, nobody will".

A statement from Joshua's family said: "Our thoughts are with Kally's family. We can't imagine how you feel but we are so sorry for the loss of your lovely daughter as she was known to all our family."

The shooting has prompted calls for action over the availability of guns in Greater Manchester. Detectives recovered a shotgun from the scene and are now investigating how Joshua got hold of the weapon.

I hate reading stories like this as its such a waste, it always upsets me.

OMG, that is so sad. Sad for her family and friends, how can his family not have noticed that he was not mentally well, especaily if people knew he was writting letters like that, it's all such a shame and a total waste of two lifes.
