HOLLYOAKS stars were being monitored by medics last night after actor Kevin Sacre caught the human form of foot and mouth disease.

Kevin - Jake Dean in the Channel 4 soap - sparked panic on the set in Cheshire on Monday when doctors confirmed he had the virus.

He was immediately sent home, throwing filming schedules into chaos.

Doctors reassured TV chiefs that although infectious, the human form of the disease is not connected to the illness which affects farmyard animals.

A Hollyoaks source said: "Kevin came to work feeling really under the weather so producers got a doctor to check him out.

"The symptoms were consistent with foot and mouth but the doctor wanted to be sure. When tests established that was what he had, Kevin was immediately sent home.

"Filming has carried on but the schedule's gone up the wall as Kevin's central to the main storyline at the moment and he'll be off for at least a week."

Symptoms of the human form of the disease are sores on the hands and feet and blisters in the mouth.

It is passed on through oral and nasal fluids.

An expert said: "It could be spread by kissing or sneezing.

"A more likely scenario is someone wiping their nose, shaking hands, and the other person putting his hand to his mouth. Good hand hygiene stops it spreading."

I am not a Hollyoaks fan, but I am just a bit concerned about this disease, being contagious. What about his co star?? did he have alot of kissing scenes ?? Scary thought, cos if it can be passed around via salvia then the co star could take it home and spread it some more,, Scary really scary...:(

Not that it matters, but where did you see this article. I've only just spotted it on ds, but noticed the story was posted there after 3pm. Just curious. Apparently it's the Coxsackievirus virus.

Although I sympathise with what poor Kevin and his family is going through Hollyoaks seem to have a spate of bad luck, particularly yesterday with this latest story and poor Chris Fountain being electrocuted on a fence (after being told not to touch it!) :searchme:
