Bafta-winning Spooks is back for a fifth series, kicking off with an explosive two-part special

Hermione Norris joins the Spooks cast, plus Lennie James, Anna Chancellor and Tim McInnerny to appear as guest stars

Spooks will be back on BBC ONE later this year, bringing millions of fans a weekly fix of fast-paced, razor-sharp drama, beginning with an explosive two-parter which sees the country on the verge of anarchy.

The growing threat of terrorism, fuel shortages and chronic loss of confidence in the government are about to bring Britain to a standstill.

MI5 supremo Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) and team leader Adam Carter (Rupert Penry-Jones) – who both survived the series 4 cliff-hanger which saw them become the target of an ex-MI5 sniper – soon begin to suspect that rogue members of the British 'Establishment' may themselves be sabotaging the very system they sought to uphold in order to bring about a radical change of government...

The growing crisis necessitates that the team work closely with head-strong, high-flying MI6 agent Ros Myers, played by new cast member Hermione Norris (Wire in the Blood, Cold Feet), who soon makes her presence felt on The Grid and instantly generates an undeniable spark with Adam.

The series opener also sees Anna Chancellor (Suburban Shootout, Tipping the Velvet) resume her role as Juliet Shaw, National Security Coordinator, with guest appearances from Robert Glenister (Hustle, Class of '76) as the Home Secretary, and John Castle (Princes in the Tower) as Jocelyn Myers, Ros' father – a wealthy and powerful industrialist who holds the key to the conspiracy.

Series 5 also sees the welcome return of Tim McInnerny (Casanova, Blackadder), resuming his role as Oliver Mace, Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee and Harry's friend and adversary.

But this time he and Harry are set to come to serious blows, with Mace using Harry's burgeoning friendship with MI5 desk officer Ruth Evershed (Nicola Walker) to pressurise Harry into supporting a cover-up operation regarding the torture of suspected terrorists.

Episode 8 sees Lennie James (Buried, Snatch) guest star as Bishop David Newman, a disillusioned government advisor on religious affairs who becomes involved with Christian extremism and a plot to assassinate known Islamic terrorists.

Series 5 storylines also include a home-grown Al Qaeda cell planning an attack on London; the British government selling nuclear technology to Gulf states; environmental terrorists staging an attack on London to demonstrate the danger of Global Warming; and the US administration selling arms to African dictators - the fifth series of Spooks promises to be even more thrilling and ground-breaking than ever.

Andrew Woodhead, producer of Spooks, comments: "Spooks has a knack of telling contemporary, relevant stories in a hugely exciting way, and from a uniquely British perspective.

"It gives viewers a powerful insight into the political and social challenges we currently face and series five is more perceptive and hard-hitting than ever. Hermione Norris as Ros Myers brings a new and exciting dynamic to the core team and we can't wait to see how viewers respond."

Rupert Penry-Jones, Peter Firth, Hermione Norris, and Nicola Walker are re-joined on The Grid by Raza Jaffrey, Miranda Raison, Hugh Simon and Rory McGregor (as officers Zafar Younis, Jo Portman and technical geniuses Malcolm Wynn-Jones and Colin Wells) to complete the core Spooks team, protecting the UK against threats to national security – including terrorism, espionage, serious crime and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

Critically-acclaimed both in the UK and the US (where it is screened on the A&E Network and was nominated for an International Emmy), Spooks was this year again nominated for a Bafta in the television drama category, having won the award in 2002 and also been nominated in 2003.

A sixth series has already been commissioned by Jane Tranter, Head of Drama Commissioning at the BBC, it was announced today.

The 10 new hour-long episodes of Spooks are written by Ben Richards, David Farr, Zinnie Harris, Raymond Khoury, Julian Simpson and Neil Cross.

The series is produced by Andrew Woodhead and executive produced by Jane Featherstone and Simon Crawford Collins for Kudos Film and Television and Lucy Richer for the BBC. The series was created by David Wolstencroft.

Spooks will air on BBC ONE in Autumn/winter 2006.

Harry has agreed to help the British Government secure a deal with Saudi Arabia, set up by British cabinet minister Daniel Wise, as the spy drama continues. The deal would mean that Britain will provide the Saudis with nuclear technology in return for a guaranteed oil supply to Britain for the next 20 years. MI6's Saudi expert, Neil Sternin, is drafted in to support the MI5 team.

Wise starts to receive death threats warning him to pull out of the nuclear deal. Intelligence suggests that one of the Saudi Princes has links with Al-Qaeda and might want to sabotage the deal, so Ros goes undercover to identify which of the Princes is responsible.

Back on The Grid, Harry is giving new girl Sally a hard time as he resents her working at Ruth's station. MI6 man Neil is behaving suspiciously and starts snooping on Sally's computer – does he have alternative agenda?

Through their informants, Adam and Zaf learn that a series of suicide bomb missions are being planned and the team concentrate on finding out the locations. In a tense stand-off, Zaf shoots a suspected suicide bomber but he and Adam soon realise that his bomb is a dummy. It becomes clear that the suicide bombers story was a red herring to draw MI5's attention away from the real plot...

Across town, the Saudi embassy is stormed and Ros, still undercover with the Saudi royal family, is taken hostage in a terrifying siege. She desperately needs to communicate with her team and help them unravel one of the most complex terror plots they have ever faced.

10 episodes is nowhere near enough for my liking, but at least series 7 has been commissioned, so at least we know that it will be returning to our screens soon - just not soon enough

Well, that and seeing Episode 6 in the title, which for some reason stuck in my head making me think Series 6 instead of Episode 6 if that makes sense.

Anyway - it will be interesting to see what this Sally is like. Especially as she is replacing Ruth. Will she be coming from GCHQ I wonder. When are they going to replace Colin too ?? Hes been gone for a couple of weeks and they still haven't replaced him.

Jessie Wallace

Ros is being held hostage in the Saudi Embassy, although the terrorists aren't aware that she's working with MI5, as the high-octane spy drama continues. The hostage-takers issue demands to the Saudi King – release Al-Qaeda prisoners or one hostage will be killed every hour.

Back on The Grid, the team realises that someone is feeding information to the terrorists. Suspicion falls on new girl Sally and the discovery of her dead body and the evidence planted by Neil on her computer seem to confirm their suspicions – but Jo remains unconvinced.

Meanwhile, Neil informs Sharaf of Ros's true identity. Sharaf and his team capture her, and the earpiece linking her to The Grid is lost.

Jo and Malcolm trace the leak to Neil but, before he can be apprehended, he commits suicide. Adam is suspicious – why would Neil be helping an Arab terrorist group when his family were killed by Arab suicide bombers?

In the Embassy, the Saudi Prince with secret links to Al-Qaeda reveals his allegiance, believing the terrorists will spare him. But when he is executed instead, the team realises they aren't dealing with Al-Qaeda after all. This is an Israeli plot designed to discredit the Saudis and de-rail the nuclear deal.

The Security Services storm the Embassy and Adam kills Sharaf in the struggle to save Ros. The true nature of the plot remains a secret as the world believes an Al-Qaeda plot has been foiled. The nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia goes ahead, with the Saudis lauded as a worthy ally who stand firm in the face of fundamentalism.

When a dangerous Muslim extremist wins his battle to stay in the UK, a gunman shoots him down outside court and denounces Islam in the name of Christ, as the spy drama continues.

Bishop David Newman, an advisor on religious matters to the PM, condemns the attack on television, but later secretly meets with the assassin, Steven Paynton. It soon becomes clear that Newman is behind the killing.

An explosion in a café kills more Muslims and a Christian group called The Sons of Phineas claim they are behind the attacks. Adam and the team trace the group to Paynton but they need to assess the scale of the threat, so Adam goes undercover as a wealthy Christian extremist offering to sponsor Paynton's future attacks. It is clear that Paynton has more planned and Adam has to find out when and where in time to stop them.

Unknown to Paynton, his group has also attracted the attention of Mossad (the Israeli secret service), who believe that he has an anti-Semitic agenda as well as an anti-Muslim one.

Under pressure from Adam, Paynton breaks and not only names Newman but also reveals that an attack on a Manchester mosque is imminent. Adam is about to bring Paynton in when Mossad hitmen storm the building to kill Paynton, with Adam's Christian extremist next in their sights. However, the post-traumatic stress that has been plaguing Adam since Fiona's death suddenly comes to the surface and Adam is paralysed just when he is needed most – can the rest of the team reach him in time?

The team must protect Niko Grecic, a witness in the trial of Serbian war criminal General Tezlia, as the high-octane spy drama continues.

Grecic was Tezlia's right-hand man but has earned immunity by testifying against him. However, Tezlia still has many loyal comrades who want Grecic dead, including Richard Dempsey, an MI6 traitor who defected years ago to join Tezlia in his genocide against Bosnian Muslims.

MI6 know that Dempsey will be looking for Grecic and they want their traitor killed, so Adam, Zaf and Jo are charged with the job. But the situation is complicated: Dempsey and Adam were close friends until Dempsey turned traitor and sold Adam out during an operation in Serbia.

When Adam finds Dempsey, he confronts him but Dempsey claims that he has been a double agent all along and that he had to betray Adam to prove his loyalty to the Serbs. Now Dempsey's MI6 handler has died and no one else in the agency seems to know anything about his mission.

Elsewhere, Grecic is attacked but Ros is unable to take him to hospital in case his whereabouts become known. She calls on her ex-boyfriend, a doctor, for help.

Meanwhile, Harry is concerned about Adam's erratic behaviour but what he doesn't know is that Adam is now on his own mission: to prove Dempsey's innocence, even if it means disobeying orders. But has Adam lost his grip on reality, or is he right to trust his old friend?

The environmental terrorist group, Divine Earth, has stormed the Thames Barrier and is threatening to flood London if the Government doesn't publish a secret document entitled Aftermath, in the concluding episode of the spy drama.

An emergency meeting of senior Ministers and security services is called and an engineer explains the death and destruction they face if the terrorists carry out their threat. The Deputy Prime Minister denies any knowledge of the Aftermath document, making it impossible to meet the terrorists' demands.

On The Grid, Adam and Ros attempt to negotiate with Divine Earth, while Jo and Zaf build up a profile of the group. One member lost friends and family in the New Orleans flood and Adam thinks he can use this to get close to him and prevent the atrocity.

The team suspects that the Deputy PM is hiding something and some snooping reveals that the Aftermath document does exist, after all. It's political dynamite: a proposal to abandon any attempt to tackle global warming and, instead, build on economic and military strength so that Britain and America can control the remaining resources. There's no doubt that it's too explosive to be published.

Meanwhile, Adam enters the Thames Barrier in an attempt to distract the terrorists so that Special Forces can storm in. However, the terrorists seem to be one step ahead and, when Ros follows Adam into the Barrier, both their lives are in mortal danger.

The clock is still ticking and the terrorists have now upped their demands. Can Adam talk down Divine Earth even as another post-traumatic stress attack threatens to seize him?
