What the papers say:
"The acting throughout [the series] has been exemplary, but never more so than here" - Times
"Poignant, funny and wonderful" – Mirror
"Event television" - Mail
"After weeks of watching awful dramas... having a McGovern drama turn up is like having Elvis walk into the room. McGovern is so persistently, noticeably, bracingly, not crap."
- Caitlin Moran, The Times
The Street, Jimmy McGovern's emotionally-powerful hit series for BBC ONE, has been recommissioned for a second series, it was announced today.
The drama, which is enjoying good ratings figures for its run on Thursday nights, has been given the green light for another six episodes to air next year.
John Yorke, BBC Head of Independent Drama, says: "It's incredibly re-assuring that in this day and age there's still an appetite for single plays; and for voices as uncompromising as Jimmy McGovern's.
"The fact that The Street has found a mass audience and touched a chord with so many people is true testament to Jimmy's talent."
The drama is made by ITV Productions for BBC ONE.
The first series starring Jane Horrocks, Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall and Sue Johnston was produced by Ken Horn.
The executive producers are Sita Williams (ITV Productions), Lucy Richer and John Yorke (BBC).
Sita Williams adds: "What is exciting and continues to be exciting about The Street is not only Jimmy McGovern's writing, but his work with new writers who bring their raw talent to the project.
"It is also testimony to Jimmy's writing that The Street will continue to attract the best actors in British drama today."
