I did mine a couple of years ago. I worked in the administration part of an elderly people's home. I really enjoyed it. I was only there for a week but was quite sad to leave in the end haha! Everyone was really friendly, and they even bought me a gift voucher at the end of it. :D

I was nervous about going at first but once you settle in it's alright. :)

I'll have to do it next year and I really don't know what I'm going to do as I have no idea as to what job I would like when I leave school.

Good luck with yours though:)

Is there anything inparticular that they don't allow you to do for work experience?

Our work experience is always really well organized, but it just so happens that the year i do it is the year they muck everything up
We were told that only a few of us could do it, and all those planning to stay on in sixth form weren't allowed, so i ended up bagging a place at my dad's work for a week (yes we only get a week) 'couz otherwise i wouldn't of been able to go!

It depends on where you want to go, some places don't allow work experience, but i think within reason yeh you can do pretty much anything :) But just remember you have to make your own way there and stuff!

That'll be fun then. I certainly don't want to end up working in the fidh and chip shop in my area, the manager has had a fungle nail infection for as long as I can remember and their standards are disgraceful.

Why did your school only allow people that wern't planning on doing sixth form do it? Those that do want to stay might not get the grades to stay on so they'd be straight in at the deep end, it seems a bit strange to me.

I did my last summer, doing Admin at a local Hospice. It was ok, because me and these 2 uni students were organising a Ball to raise money for the Hospice. But a lot of the time, we didn't have a lot to do, because of having to wait for calls and things. So i spent most the time on the computer and on here wasting time

God knows, My school is really losing the plot lately, i reckon its just 'couz they don't want us all dosing for like a week, So only a few of us can do it and we only get a week, and i had like a week to get a placement  Tis crazy!

I did my work experience at a vets and pretty sure i was under 16. it was pretty boring though - only really chose there to confirm that i didnt want to be a vet!

I organised my own extra work experience in a hospital a few years later though and loved that one! (was 18 by that time so could work in hospital which i dont think you can do when you originally do workexperience)

My first day went fine, its a long day though, 8:30 to 5:30 and I'm mucking out and grooming all day but it was fun. As regards to where you can and cant go, I have friends who are going to vets, hospital and working in catering and they are all 15 so I think its just heavy machinery you cant do and everything has to be supervised if you work with animals or directly with people

Awww glad it went well squillyfer :D Good luck for the rest of it :D

I did mine a couple of weeks ago, I went to a primary school for mine. I really enjoyed it, the kids were so ctue and I was really sad to leave! I think I might want to be a teacher, because it looked really rewarding and like a really good job but loads of work. I got an easter egg and stuff at the end though, so that was quite cool :D

I was going to start a new thread but thought I might as well bring this again..

I am filling in my work experience form and I'm stuck on 2-3 things!!..

1) It syas fill form in capitals so for the questions they ask would I have to fill it in capitals? Or is that just for the details?

2) For hobbies and interests can I write things like going out with mates, watching movies etc. ?

3) I want to work at a nursery.. it asks me what skills and experience do I hope to gain from this placement. What would I write =| Sounds stupid I know but is there really anything you can learn apart from knowing how it is working with children etc.?

Thank-you very much!! x

1) i wouldn't use capitals for that part but i would print it/ write really clearly
2) i would use that because well they are your hobbies!
3) child skills, say you like kids and think you would enjoy working with them :) That's what i would write anyway!

Siobhan
23-11-2006, 17:21
Spicy,
1) when they say capitals, they mean block capitals.. it is just smaller caps

2) going out with mates, watch movies are not good hobbies to put in a form. you can write you have interest in movies, that is fine

3) Put down what they want to hear, you learnt how to interact with children, different way to deal with their problems, sharing techinques.. etc..

1 - the questions just have to be block caps

2 - hobbies can be shopping, swimming, writting, computers etc

3 - have you had experience like babysitting or something like that?

.:SpIcYsPy:.

What are your hobbies and interests? Shopping and learning to play the piano. I have an interest in computers and comedy films/tv shows.

Do you think that's alright?

I would remove the shopping bit (for me shopping is a career choice not a hobby :rotfl: ). Learning piano, computers and comedy films/tv shows is all very valid

for what you would learn, say about transferable skills, such as patience, communication skills etc

Kim
23-11-2006, 21:34
I really don't know what to put on my form either. It asks for the CLCI codes of your four preferences for placement areas, and it doesn't tell you what's likely to be expected of you. It's also annoying as Teaching and Media are in the same code, but the last thing I'd want to do is teaching.

Yesterday we been given this site to go on to look for jobs for work experience... On a piece of paper theres some listed and I am already interested in them so that's good lol :D

I just wanted to ask what sort of questions they will ask in your interview that you get a few weeks before you start the job for work experience. Just to give me an idea of what's going to be asked so if anyone knows what type of things they could be asking me please let me know, it will really help me. Thank-you! x

I thought you only had an interview if you were having a private arrangement, or is that what you're doing?

.:SpIcYsPy:.
27-01-2007, 13:30
Nope, in our school we all have to make an interview with our employer before we go off and do the 2 week work thing. After we get one of our choosen jobs though.

Kim
27-01-2007, 13:41
Oh right, we only do ours for a week. I have no clue where to start with mine, so I've sent in with my categories and sets because they do it on how much help would be available to you, so it is suitable to ability level. I'm waiting for the work experience co-ordinator to come round with the file. So they give you one of your choices, but it's the one they think you're most suited to after the interview?

.:SpIcYsPy:.
27-01-2007, 14:36
Ermmm yeah I guess so.. Other students from our burough (sp?) might also want the job so I am guessing that's how it works. We get to choose 6 jobs from any catergory and rate them 1-6 and it goes down that list. After one of it is accepted then we have to make an interview 4 weeks before our job.

Well in my school what happens is you can either get in self placed and sort it out yourself, so you could have an interview if they wanted you to have one. Or the school sorts one out for you, but at one point you have to meet up with the employer to talk them, likewise could be an interview.
And during all this we have interviews at school as if we were going for a job, but it was just a practise and didnt affect our work placement.

Abi
27-01-2007, 20:27
My one had the same system as yours, Spicy. They basically only want to have a chat with you, to see what you're like, and what your personality is. Your school will send them some info about you, before the interview, so its just a bit of them trying to get to know you as a person, and get a better idea of what jobs you could do for them. Nothing much to worry about.

My person just asked me about what i do in my free-time, what i knew about their company etc.

I cant wait to do work experience as I already know what I want to do but our school now isnt doing it until next January, it was meant to be in october. We get 2 weeks for ours and i'm doing 1 week with a paramedic hopefully and 1 week in a creche.
Also has anyone ever done it in a hospital, and if so what were you allowed to do, as my mum thinks they will only get me to make tea and stuff, and operating theatres dont take people under 18

This Friday 2pm.. Really worried, I'm going to work in Superdrug (my favourite place to get my make-up :p) and I don't know where to go! Would I ask someone who works there where so and so is? (I can't even pronounce his name properly!)

Had my interview today. It went ok, I just hope my sore throat goes away by Monday because she said to me, as she knows me from when I was 7, "I know you're the type to talk to the children a lot," and was telling me about students that have gone there and not bothered.

She was asking me if that was what I wanted to do when I was older, and it isn't directly, and I said possibly, and that I was hoping to go into law or be a social worker and she seemed impressed by my ambition.

Need some new clothes as I have mostly jeans, and I'm not allowed to wear them. I'm really looking forward to work experience now.

Well I had my interview that Friday and I didn't get to speak to the person I spoke on the phone too as they were away. I did speak to one of the workers there and they showed me the lockers and fire exits and stuff which we are meant to be getting told on our first day but hey-ho no harm done! Only took 5 minutes so was quite suprised at how quick it was lol.

I will be starting my first day the coming Monday with my mate. I also know 3 other mates working close by to where I will be working. It should be good and I will be going there for 2 weeks then my 6 weeks holidays start woohoo :D Bit nervous but I will let you know how I get on eh? :) xx

Well on my first week I only went in on a Tuesday as I was very ill. On my second week I went in every single day and did everything I was told to do. The Store and Dep. manager both had a problem with me and my mate and a boy from another school I knew who was also there for work experience. Whenever the store manager wasn't supervising us and she left for home early the dep. manager would be in charge of us and he would laugh at us when he gives us tasks such as stock filling etc.! He sort of knew he had a higher authority over us and that we couldn't say anything to him as we would lose our job and took that to his advantage...

So the week went by and on Friday me and my mate Faye got sent home early... how early... 35 minutes before our last day ended and all the stock had been finished filling! He just said he had enough and when we asked politely (even though I was boiling in anger at this moment as I even told my mum the day before he was capable of doing this!) why we were being sent home and if we could just continue with the work and then we would leave for good, he said it was not up for debate! So we left and then he didn't sign any of the pages in my work book we was given which he had to go through with us. He did sign one thing.. The final employer report and he gave me the worst report ever! 1 being the best 4 saying 'needs support with area'... I got 3 3's and the rest were all 4's! Apparently I was very unemployable and I need a lot of support in all areas to be employable... I sound like the worst person you could ever come across! Was not happy about this so...

On Saturday my mum and me went to see the store manager and she too was like I would have given her a similar report to what the dep. manager gave her! After 10 minutes of explaining our points etc. she said she would write me a letter. Then she gave me a report slightly better than my report! I realised I was getting no where.. And the trouble of getting the actual letter, god that’s another story! She said the computer froze up and we had to wait 10 minutes.. After 10 minutes no it's still frozen, we said we would go shopping and be back in about half an hour.. After that on the letter she spelt my name wrong and said that’s how it was on their database! She could do nothing to correct it and the computer would play up again! Wtf!!!!! I was like okay thank-you and just left...

Today I phoned the school asking for the lady in charge of work experience and she wasn't there but luckily the deputy head teacher was, she is also my CCPE teacher so she knows me quite well. When I explained the whole thing to her she told me not to worry and she would get me a decent report and the certificate I deserve because she knows what a 'wonderful' girl I am and what 'fantastic' reports I get (her words not mine hahaha).. She sadly said it would be dealt with in Sept when school starts again; the dep. manager leaves this Friday! But I guess I have something to be ecstatic (sp?) about!

What an experience it was
