The case of a schoolgirl who fell pregnant at the age of 11 has prompted calls for a better teenage sexual health strategy in Scotland.
The girl from West Lothian - who would become one of the UK's youngest mothers - told a newspaper that she was looking forward to having her child.
The Scottish Sun said the girl, now 12, got pregnant to a 15-year-old boy.
Green MSP Patrick Harvie said the case showed that deficiencies in Scottish sex education must be addressed.
The newspaper said the girl, who has not been named, had unprotected sex with the boy on a night out with friends in Edinburgh in August.
She said she was looking forward to motherhood and hopes she has a boy when she gives birth next month.

The girl added: "I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers.
"I'm enjoying being pregnant - even though I get a bit of a sore back and sore ribs."
Her 34-year-old mother told the newspaper: "I'm not ashamed of my daughter at all - in fact, I'm proud of her for keeping her baby."
The newspaper said the girl smokes up to 20 cigarettes a day.
Sex education
Mr Harvie, co-convenor of the Scottish Parliament's cross-party group on sexual health, said: "I think we need to do away with this notion that sex education is everywhere and that young people have got all the information they need.
"There are a lot of myths out there and sex education is quite patchy in this country.
"The sexual health and relationships strategy from the Scottish Executive - the implementation of that is going on at the moment - needs to lead to much more comprehensive sex education."

The Scottish Conservatives called for society and families to unite to change attitudes towards sex following the news.
Health spokeswoman Nanette Milne MSP said: "This news will have shocked many people and the impact on the lives of the two children, the mum-to-be and her baby must be the first concern.
"I hope that this incident will draw attention to failings that have allowed such a young girl to go on a night out, get drunk, get pregnant, yet seemingly be ignorant about the risks and consequences."
A Catholic Church spokesman criticised "an increasingly promiscuous culture".
Family context
A Scottish Executive spokesman did not comment on the case, but said: "We have a programme of sex education in schools.
"It is something that all pupils should be aware of and it stresses the importance of relationships with a family context."
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the girl's case would be the subject of a child protection review and the matter would be reported to the Children's Reporter and the procurator fiscal. West Lothian Council said it was providing support and working with the family to ensure that the child "gets the best possible start".

Who will be really bring up the child, will it be the 11 year old or her mother?
Better education is definately needed but its not just school, parents should take some reponsibility to education there children also.
Bringing up children is not playing dolls with cute babies
11 year olds should be playing with make up etc, not smoking, drinking and having sex.

Poor wee girl! Can I just ask, why was a girl of 11, allowed to go on a night out in Edinburgh with her friends and get drunk?

it is a sad reflection of society that a girl of 11 feels ready to have sex. kids are growing up too fast and our children are not allowed to be children for long. i was climbing trees and playing out making dens at 11 and definitely far from being ready to have sex!!

Pookie me too,, I thought all the kissin and huggin I saw at 11 was gross..I was out playing cops and robbers,, and cow boys and indians, and running all over the place.. SEX at 11,,,,, nah didn't even know what it was ......
Its weird how much things change,i think when i was 11 i only had a vague idea of what sex actually was!
There was no way i would have been allowed out on the town at 11,at 16 they were still phoning me up when i popped to the shop at night, wondering where i was.
I think having your own kid is going to be a little different than looking after your brothers.
I know things are changing and it was only 6 years ago when i was 11. I was probebly worrying about whose team id get to play football on afterschool down the park.
can't believe that an 11 year old girl falling pregnant the schools should do more Sex education and the parents should discuss sex to their kids
i am totally shocked!!, my little boy is 11 this year and he is still a kid, just as he should be!!
when i was 11 i was still playng with barbies!!!!!

what a stupid girl! shes ruined her future and it wont be her looking aftewr the baby it will be her mumm and i dont think here mum is a very good one as who would let their 11 year old child out on the town in edinburgh also at 11 she wont have developed properly her hips wont be wide enough and id have guessed she'd only just recently just started her periods, so shes gonna struggle to get it out!
she has only just started Puberty
when the Baby is 11 she will be 22
omg  why would anyone be so irresponsible to not look after their child? it's just mad that she was 1) allowed to get drunk in the first place 2) that she was allowed at night on her own ... weird!
Also the mothers a grandma at 34. i think my mum would kill me if that happened.
we were discussing this at breakfast this morning, and we worked out that there could be 5 generations in that family all aged under 70... i would be slaughtered!
in know, i read an article simular in the paper about a family of woman of five generation.
I always thought grandparents were meant to have gray hair, retired and give you great presents. Not still working looking after there own kids.

i got told the father was 37 so someone told me wrong but i dont think its a terrable thing really if the child has got support from there parents then i think its fine to have a baby young

this girl could possible be a grandmother herself before she is 30 years old.. if she has a girl and she has a baby at 11, the girl will only be 22 years of age :eek:
i know but 11 is to young. Young parents was always 15, 16 even 17. How on earth is she going to get a decend education. Shell never have a proper life, not like all her friends. When all her friends are going out to celebrate GCSEs shell be going to parents evening, or nativity plays.

Well I wouldn't let the grandmother look after the baby while I went to school, if she is the irresponsible with her own child, she won't look after a grandchild
Was discussing this today with some friends and i think its outrageous, i mean she is 12, and was 11 when she feel pregnant. I at 11 vaguely knew about sex and deffinatly didn't think about having sex or indeed falling pregnant.
And the fact the mother is proud of her aswell, i mean i can see where she is coming from, because i don't know if i would want to have an abprtion or whatever but i know that if i fell pregnant now (being nearly 4 years older than the girl) my mum would be anything but proud.
And how is she going to have an education-i still can't get over it she is still a child herself.
And plus my mate said today when that baby is 10, his/her mother is going to be 22  I can't believe this at all, and the fact she was allowed to go out to edinborough with friends and get drunk, i am not allowed (doesn't stop me *whistles) to do that, and as i said i am older!

i think its sad to know the girl wont be able to get a full education now shes concentrating on having the baby. there wont be much support in the future for her baby and herself without much education.
Oh my god im sorry bu that is way to young i mean she will miss out on lots of stuff, i can remmber when i was 11 i was so immuture im just totally shocked!!!!

Oh my god, I can't believe this! How can her mother be proud of her?! She and her mother sound too irrespnsible to look after a kid.
i think its sad to know the girl wont be able to get a full education now shes concentrating on having the baby. there wont be much support in the future for her baby and herself without much education. She won't worry about that will she,she will be claiming benefits and living off the state, yet another one for the hard working people of this country to keep. Ah how I long for things to go back to when I was younger,at 11 I was well informed by my mother on the facts of life, and was told to keep my legs crossed, only just two years before my 11th birthday I was still believing in father christmas..I think both the mother and daugther are what my dad would have called trollups.
but i dont think its a terrable thing really if the child has got support from there parents then i think its fine to have a baby young Well I think its absolutely disgusting. How on earth could an eleven year old girl cope with motherhood. By the look of things he mother will be incabable of providing her with any sort of mature support. The mother is 90% to blame for this state of affairs. She obviously had no thought or care as to what her daughters was getting up to.

its a sad fact of life in todays society I live in edinburgh and the local high school has a creche for all the school girl mums so they can continue with there education. I would be totally distraught if my daughter became pregnant at 11. I did not get sex education until I was 13 at secondary school we had a male teacher and spent half the time giggling about pictures of nude bodies. I knew a bit about sex education when I was 11 but that was down to my older sisters and brothers. As for being allowed out to get drunk, I had to be in the house for 9.30 every night until I was 16

I blame the mother, me and my sister have always known the facts of life ever since we were really young, like 7 and 8 ( well sumerised at least) How can the mother be proud of her, if she was my kid I would be so ashamed of myself because all this is is an example of terrible parenting
I cant actually remember when i had sex education lol but i know it was beofre high school
That's totally sick. The majority of girls have only just started having their periods then, if at all.

If he was 16 he would have been done for having sex with an underage girl at the very least.
well on 60 seconds on BBC3 it mentioned this saying he got arrested

Rape charge over UK's youngest mum
A teenage boy has been charged with rape after it emerged a 12-year-old girl is set to become Britain's youngest mum.
The 15-year-old is scheduled to appear again on July 10 at Edinburgh sheriff court having already made a previous appearance, police said.
The youngster, who comes from West Lothian in Scotland, fell pregnant when she was just 11 and is due to give birth next month.
She will break the record set by Jenny Teague of Dorset, who had a baby aged 12 years and nine months in 1997.
The girl told a newspaper she was "really excited" about the prospect of becoming a mother.
"I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers," she said in an interview with the paper.
"I'm enjoying being pregnant - even though I get a bit of a sore back and sore ribs."
She feared that she might be pregnant after having unprotected sex with a 15-year-old boy on a night out with friends in Edinburgh last August.
The pregnancy was confirmed with the help of a supermarket home-testing kit.
Her 34-year-old mother told the newspaper: "I'm not ashamed of my daughter at all - in fact, I'm proud of her for keeping her baby."
A spokesman for West Lothian Council said: "We are aware of the situation. We are providing support through our social policy and education teams.
"We are working with the family to support the young person to ensure that the child gets the best possible start."

Either they got it wrong or the law is different in Scotland from what it is here.
I don't get this, where did they say it is rape?

I hope social services punish her mother for negelct. Apart from the fact that the girl has fallen pregnant. okay maybe she could not have prevented that happening but to let her go into the centre of edinburgh and get drunk is unbelieveable. This girl comes from west lothian, which is about 20 miles outside edinburgh and her mother willingly let her 11 year old travel all that distance on her own, where do these people get their brains
I don't get this, where did they say it is rape?
I think because she was under 12 it automatically becomes Rape

But she wasn't forced was she? I don't see how that can be classed as rape.

Neither do I, that's why I don't understand it.
Neither do I, that's why I don't understand it. Legally being under 12 she could not give consent for Sexual Intercourse therefore its RApe

i suppose under 12 you could be forced into doing something without realising it and your too young thne to know what is actually happening
he should totally get done for it, as she was only 11 when she concieved the baby
Legally being under 12 she could not give consent for Sexual Intercourse therefore its RApe
If that is the law then I think it should still be classified as rape until someone reaches the age of 16 as it is still illegal.

i thought she did know who the dad was a 15 year old boy? i thnik the parent should be in prison and the kid(s) in care although it would be a bit harsh to split the family up

Unless the paper made that up for the sake of publicity...
Or the girl has a habit of going round getting drunk and having unprotected sex.

What a shambles all round with this story. To think this sort of thing happens in our society is totally abhorent.
but i dont think its a terrable thing really if the child has got support from there parents then i think its fine to have a baby young I think you are bing naive in the extreme. This girl is STILL only a child. What on earth would she know about life let alone bringing up a child. The immaturity of her and her apology for a mother beggars belive. The 11 yr old should be taken into care and her unfit mother prosecuted for child abuse:angry:

reading the sun's article on this today really shed the true light on the little girl. her mother said that 'shes scared about giving birth and will take her favourite teddy to hospital with her' does that or does that not some up how young she really is. i think its terrible how the mother is proud of her?! excuse me but what is there to be proud of? i mean if shes so proud of her why dont they name and shame her?! big enough to go to the papers with there story but what are theygoing to do when the money fro mthe tabloids runs out how will they buy the nappies then? its the baby i feel sorry for think of the comments when its older! 11 years old i was stil ldressing my dolls when i was 11! :)
thats my thought on the matter, the mums still a child herself and the dad is for that matter. 15 isnt old.
i got told the father was 37 so someone told me wrong but i dont think its a terrable thing really if the child has got support from there parents then i think its fine to have a baby young
:wall:
At 11 years old you should be living your childhood, not going to family planning clinics.
:wall:
At 11 years old you should be living your childhood, not going to family planning clinics. I know I mean if we all remeber back to when we were 11 its safe to say none of us were no where near ready to parents, or at 15 or any young age like that!!!!

I believe that social services should be involved as the mother is clearly not looking after her eleven year old daughter and as for being proud, I'm a 20 year old girl and I think that at my age it would be a mistake as I still have more of my life to live before tieing myself down to such a commitment and although I'd cope my mother would support me she would not be proud and I'm actually an adult who've had s good education.
At 11 thats disgracefull. But i'm talking as a parent of a 12 year old boy. I won't even let my son stay out past 8pm and could not imagine him being a father. He still cuddles up at night when we are watching TV. BUT, on reading in between the lines, it sounds like the older person led her astray.
11 year olds are impressionable at the best of times.

Neither do I, that's why I don't understand it.
Nor do I, how can it be rape?. The problem I see with this is that it will all be oh the 11 year old girl doesn't understand, she didn't know what she was doing, of course she does. She's a 11 years old, I know 11 year olds that know what they should and shouldn't do, there not stupid.
The girl added: "I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers.
this is what worries me, where was the mother when looking after these boys?
Stupidy belongs with the mother, she should not allow her child out with her mates late at night, she is the parent and she should take responisbility. The mother seems to have the attitude of 'I couldnt give a damn' which is a sad state of affairs. Im 18 and my brother 15 and we still have to tell our parents where we are going, and what time we will be coming home, some parents nowadays are to irresponisible, I mean god help that child when it comes into this world, having a grandmother who is proud of her own daughter for getting pregnant at 11. Not only that but she is probably delighted about the media attention she is getting, which is just wrong.
The child's life has been thrown away and I just hope that the 11 year olds mother can live with herself, I hear she is a heroin addict as well, which is shocking, she ought to have her children taken away.
:eek: 11 years old? looking after her brothers?? that is madness.. I would let a 15 year old look after my kids.. the mother of that girl is totally irresponsible and she should be proscuted for allowing her daughter to go out, get pregnant and she smokes 20 a day!!!! I am a smoker for years and I don't smoke that many....
JA, in response to the rape, it can be classed as satitory (sp? ) rape as she is under the legal age
in response to the rape, it can be classed as satitory (sp? ) rape as she is under the legal age
So why isn't it classed as satitory rape if someone is 12, 13, 14 or 15? It is still illegal at those ages.
Oops, it posted twice, my computer keeps doing that.
The poor kid, her mother is to blame. Most girls at her age should be enjoying friends and fun not partying till 6 in the morning, binging on vodka or smoking 20 a day.
I can't see why she'll think it's so easy. Knowing about changing nappies and stuff is much different than the actual thing.
It is classed as rape as a child under 13 is too young to give consent. The father is awaiting trial.
