As Coronation Street’s fiery Ulsterman Jim "What’s the crack?" McDonald, actor Charlie Lawson was raking in £100,000 a year. But the star has apparently fallen on hard times since leaving the soap six years ago - and is now signing on the dole after his acting work dried up.

Charlie has been claiming Job Seeker's Allowance of £57.45 a week since he finished touring in a play. He told The People: "I know it's not the most comfortable thing in the world having been famous but I am entitled to sign on. If I have been paying National Insurance for 27 years, I am entitled to my bloody dole like anyone else." Yeah, you tell 'em, Charlie.

According to the storyline, Charlie’s character Jim is currently in jail for crimes against interior design (namely, being in possession of a stick-on pine dado rail)... sorry, for murdering drug dealer Jez Quigley. Still, compared to being married to Liz, it must seem like a holiday camp.

Last year, the 46-year-old star reappeared in two brief episodes, but a predicted full return to Weatherfield failed to materialise. Bit of a bummer that, eh Charlie?
