I think it should be banned in UK. I know people have the right to smoke but don't non smokers have the right not to smoke? smoking out doors means we don't have to breathe in others smoke. just my opinion.

sorry i hate the smoking ban, i live in Dublin and it is horrible having to go out side when you want to have a cigaratte
The Scottish Parliement have voted to ban smoking in enclosed public places (e.g. clubs & restaurants etc) from March 2006.
Would it ever be the same to go to a pub and not be allowed to smoke?

Do you smoke Mordor
Do you smoke Mordor
Nah. To be honest I detest smoking especially since it makes my asthma kick in.
mmm difficult one this, ideally people should have a choice. If they do a blanket ban all the traditional pubs will suffer and we will end up with chain pubs like weatherspoons taking over :ninja: . I think it should be up to the licencee of the pub.
I don't agree with the ban personally,
However i do agree that non smokers have right not to breath in other peoples smoke, I think there should be bans in restaurants but pubs and clubs etc there should, as a smoker myself i find it impossible to go for a drink and not smoke, If a ban was bought in i would just stay in rather than going out.
Maybe the government should think of introducing a partial ban in family places but not a complete ban.
If sign were placed on the outside of pubs of restaurants to advise if it smoking or non-smoking people would then have a choice .
just my opinion but i think its inevitable that a complete ban will be in force within the year.

I don't know if that's necessarily true - I wouldn't want something like weatherspoons taking over - can anyone in Ireland comment about whether this has happened over there?

I argee with vcl you do smoke a lot more while your drinking (i know i do)
I do think smoking should be banned in some places but not all..... then i also think that if your not allowed to smoke in the usual places then it might encourage you to stop.
I know i would love to stop and i have tried many of time but always fall back into the habbit.
This might sound a bit bolshy, but I am a none smoking, asthma sufferer and I cannot go to pubs etc. Why should my freedom be curtailled by smokers. I don't do them any harm with my non smoking.
There has been loads of debate about this in Scotland recently because of the ban coming in and smokers keep on going on about 'their' freedom and how they pay tax on cigarettes that pays for everyones NHS.
The official figures state that 9 times more cash is spent on smoking related illnesses than is raised in tax on tobacco.

No big major place have taken over.. Pub going has slowed.. it is a really good way to meet people though.. As you have to smoke outside you get to meet people in other parts of a pub you generally would not talk too.
It is also great if you want to quit smoking or if you have children as you can bring them in to a pub for lunch without worrying about people smoking around you.
I am a smoker and I don't mind the ban, it has it good points, as I have said, winter is the worst time... cold, damp but you don't smoke as much which saves money :)
I believe that beer sales in Irland have fallen 2% since the ban, however profits overall are still up
I'll always wondered (even though i am a smoker) why isn't smoking made illegal? Why dont they just stop making cigarettes?
Thats cause the Irish still like their drink and would go to the pub regardless..

Brings in too much government revenue
Brings in too much government revenue
But then why bring bans in then? If this brings in money for them then bans are obviously going to encourage people to stop smoking and that's going to lose them money.
Sorry but this really confuses me

Health.. there has been to much emphasis on passive smoking so they are trying to cut that down.. I guess they figure that smoking is additive and most people continue smoking regardless cause they are hooked. Tabacco sales have not dropped here at all..
It is still legal to smoke herbal cigarettes in pubs here but they smell disgusting...

I dont think that's right if they are going to ban smoking it should be all smoking!!
it is a really difficult issue!!! as a smoker i do enjoy a fag when i go to a pub. but i would not mind it being banned in resurants or anywhere where kids are!!! and herbal cigs smell horrid!!!
Nobody actually smokes them, or I haven't seen anyone do it over here...

I don't think there should be a ban on smoking, if you think about it the air you breathe in is pollutted by all the smoke from factories, if there is a ban on smoking it won't do much difference, I hate smoking though  , my parents smoke i've tried to tell them to stop smoking but they just won't listen :searchme:
When i was young i made my gran go and get laser treatment to give up smoking....then ended up a smoker myself

yeah because all the non smokers would be with the smokers and then they give out about the smokey pub - but there was sections for non smokers - i just don't know - even now that smokers have to go out for a smoke non smokers still come out as well - you can't win :searchme:

Personally I've always found this to be a strange concept as the smoke always travels to fill the whole of the building!

if the place is small yeah it propbably does, but not if its a big place and like some sections could have upstairs- non smoking and downstairs - smoking
If proper ventilation is provided in the smoking section there is no reason why it should fill the whole building.
I used to work in a pub with seperate sections for smokers and non smokers and good ventilation was provided.
However non-smokers tended to sit in the smokers section as there was a better atmosphere. all the action seemed to be in there

Yeah exactly what i was saying and then they are giving out about their health from sitting with the smokers if they cared that much about their lungs they wouldnt sit with them would they
i am all for the smoking ban because it is not fair on us non smokers we don't want to die because of people who smoke

i dont know there is no even point in talking about it because at the end of the day the ban is here it has been for a year, so good luck when it happen's in the UK, because it is horrible, from a smokers point of view
Regarding the ban conversation above. As I mentioned before 9 times more cash is spent on smoking related illness than the tax on tobacco raises. The main issue is crime. If you ban smoking you will drive it underground. Organised crime will be the sole source of cigarettes, raising money for who knows what dubious causes. In addition the checks and controls on cigarettes will be gone - cigarettes would be even more unhealthy than they are now. We have all seen the problems with conterfeit cigarettes that are sold on the street. This have more tar, more chemicals and are more dangerous that the legal ones . It is a case of damage limitation.

I absolutely despise smoking. My Grandad was a smoker, and he died of lung cancer. I believe that people should only smoke in their own homes, where they can't harm people through passive smoking. I know it sounds harsh, but I don't understand why anyone smokes. Why do it? :hmm:

Half the people in my school smoke... :searchme: I think it should be in pubs but not in public.. I think people should be able to smoke if they want to. They are the ones who are going the risk thier lives not us. I don't smoke but I don't see any point of cutting it fully out since it may be helping people.. don't ask me!!
Pubs ARE public. If people want to smoke they should do it where it isn't going to harm anyone else - garden shed perhaps?
i hate been around people who smoke
