View Full Version : SoapBoards Book Group
SoapBoards is going to have a Book Group.
The aim is to encourage reading between young and old. Once a month we will decide on a book to read, and then all members of the book group will borrow it from the library or buy it, and then read it. After the month we will then discuss the book in detail giving our opinions on the book, its context, the author and further meanings.
As some books are hard to follow, and Soapboards is a youth orientated site, there will be two groups: Teenage (That read teenage and kids books) and Elder (Who read more complex or mature books) Teenagers are free to join the Elder group if they feel they will be able to read the books.
Anyone who is intrested in joining these Book Groups, please PM or Email me as soon as possible so i can get an idea of numbers and arrange plans.
The first books are:
For the Elders: The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
It's an easy book to obtain, a popular read, but is it worth the hype? With the film on its way soon this gives a chance for those who have read it to enjoy it again and give it the discussions it deserves, and for those who havent to read a literacy classic!
For the Teenagers: Jake's Tower by Elizabeth Laird
A dramatic tale about a young boy who has to grow up with domestic violence. Whoever he gets trough it with his imagintion of a tower where he hides...a well written book and has a serious theme that can be disucssed amongst all you teen readers.
You all have until the end of May to obtain a copy of this book and have read it. We will discuss the book at the end of May, in mid may the next book will be chosen, based on recommendations from other members of the book group.
any ideas on what the next book will be - planning on finishing the other one tonight

Cradle & All
In Boston, a young woman finds herself pregnant--even though she is still a virgin.
In Ireland, another young woman discovers she is in the same impossible condition.
And in cities all around the world, medical authorities are overwhelmed by epidemics, droughts, famines, floods, and worse. It all feels like a sign that something awful is coming.
Anne Fitzgerald, a former nun turned private investigator, is hired by the Archdiocese of Boston to investigate the immaculate conceptions. Even as she comes to care about and trust the young women, she realizes that both are in great danger. Terrifying forces of light and darkness are gathering. Stepping into uncharted territory where the unknown is just the beginning, Anne must discover the truth--to save the young women, to save herself, and to protect the future of all mankind.

yeh thats what i thought, i could just join in with some of the books, that would be ok wouldnt it?
Yeah that would be fine, the idea would just to join in when anyone can. Obviously there will be a long enough time limit for the book anyway
I didn't know this existed.
I'm willing to join in but I don't read classics or chic lit. I'm more into thriller, psychological stuff, anything witht a bit of blood and gore in it really.
Right, okay well of course we'll read stuff to suit everyone

As i said on the Shoutbox last night, I am up for joining. I really do need to read more, considering I do an English A Level and I think this book group would encourage me to read a lot more, as I have people to talk about the book with.
well its sounds like it will go ahead as quiet a few people are interesred just waiting a bit longer as I sent out PMs.
Then we can disucss the details
This book sounds good, I'll join in.
what book, or do you just mean the book club?
Both.
When will we be starting? I will have to order the book so I won't be able to start until the end of this week/beginning of next.
Well we havent Chosen a book yet, Im waiting a bit longer to give people a chance ( I only sent the PMs early this morning) And then I thought we could discuss what book to pick to read first so we get a book we are all happy with
Okey dokey. How long will each reading and discussion last for?
Good question, well we were talking about this last night and we are either going to do it by thw wholebook deadline to then discuss or by chapters. As some people thought that by chapters it would motivate them to read it all :)
So I was going to create a poll to see which would be best and then majority will win.
It would then depend on the length of book or chapter when we started to discuss.
yeah i'm interested count me in :) need a bit of notice for each book though what with exams and stuff! :)
Yeh im interested, may not be able to take part every book as i've exams and stuff but yeh :)
count me in, i like reading when i have the time.

Ive read Lord of the files, I had to read it for my GCSE
sounds silly but what is Animal farm?

Is Animal Farm George Orwell?
I am terrible with putting authors together with books.

Yes it is.

I had to do 1984 for my GCSEs i didn't read it then and i won't be reading it now, to put it nicely i hate the book!!!

Sorry I didn't get back to you Abbie. I'm still up for joining the book group.
I am interested in joining the book group, too.
I usually like the books recommended by Richard and Judy - they have a website related to their book club, that might be a good place to start?
http://www.richardandjudybookclub.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?langId=100&storeId=10101&catalogId=15201
Another good list of books that includes classics is the 100 best reads book list by BBC
http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml
Thankyou for those websites Ive found a few books that sounds quite interesting and thought would be quite interesting to use as our first book. they are from the Richard and Judy summer read 2007 and you can order it from them website for a bit cheaper.
Here it is :
Relentless
Simon Kernick
John Meron, a happily married father of two who's never been in trouble, receives a phone call that will change his life for ever: his friend Jack Calley, a high-flying City lawyer, is screaming down the phone for help. As Meron listens, Calley is murdered. His last words, spoken to his killer, are the first two lines of Meron's address. Confused and terrified, Meron scoops up his children and hurries out of the house. Just in time. Within minutes, a car pulls up outside, and three men get out. It's clear that they're coming for him. He's being hunted and has no idea why. And with his wife missing, an unidentified corpse in her office, and the police after him for murder, his life's about to get one hell of a lot worse.
Sounds good but the reviews werent good
The Savage Garden
Mark Mills
A haunting tale of murder, love and innocence lost set in post-war Tuscany from the award winning author of 'The Whaleboat House'. Behind a villa in the heart of Tuscany lies a Renaissance garden of enchanting beauty. Its grottoes, pagan statues and classical inscriptions seem to have a secret life of their own - and a secret message, too, for those with eyes to read it.
Young scholar Adam Strickland is just such a person. Arriving in 1958, he finds the Docci family, their house and the unique garden as seductive as each other. But post-War Italy is still a strange, even dangerous place, and the Doccis have some dark skeletons hidden away which Adam finds himself compelled to investigate. Before this mysterious and beautiful summer ends, Adam will uncover two stories of love, revenge and murder, separated by 400 years... but is another tragedy about to be added to the villa's cursed past?
Reviews sounded very good
The Other Side of the Bridge
Mary Lawson
Two brothers, Arthur and Jake, are the sons of a local farmer in the mid-1930s, when life is tough and another world war is looming. Arthur is reticent, solid, dutiful, set to inherit the farm and his father's character; Jake is younger, attractive, mercurial and dangerous to know. A young woman, Laura, comes into the community and tips the fragile balance of sibling rivalry over the edge...
And then there is Ian, son of the local doctor, much younger, thoughtful, idealistic, and far too sure that he knows the difference between right and wrong. By now it is the Fifties, and the world has changed - a little, but not enough. The stories of these two generations in the small town of Struan and its harsh rural hinterland are tragically interlocked, linked by fate and community but separated by a war which devours its young men and whose unimaginable horror reaches right into the heart of this remote corner of an empire.
Lawson has an astonishing ability to turn the ratchet of tension slowly and delicately, building to a shocking climax. Taut with apprehension, surprising the reader with moments of tenderness and humour, The Other Side of the Bridge is a compelling, humane and vividly evoked novel with an irresistible emotional undertow
Agian reviews were very good
So any take your Fancy?

I have read this one, too. I recommended it to a friend who didn't like it but I enjoyed it. This is much more emotional and has less action than the first one.
I quite like the sound of The Savage garden its sounds like it combines quite a bit
Hopefully if we can deciede on a book by the end of thise week beginning of next? The we can all get the book, order it, whatever and then start reading and set dates for those who want to read by chapter or few chaters and discuss

I really like the sound of Relentless by Simon Kernick - I was, in fact, going to buy this the other day, but bought Patricia Cornwell's Blow Fly instead.
The Savage Garden sounds really good too, but I am willing to give The Other Side Of The Bridge a go, despite it not really sounding like my type of book..:)
Also found out that The savage garden is around 400 pages so its a good length
My vote goes to that book for us to start with.
Shall we say thats the book unless there are any other suggestions?
I would be happy to go with Savage Garden.
Relentless is excellent. I read it in one night. The first 40 pages are a bit boring, just setting the scene really then the pace picks up. Hard to put down.
I might sit this one out, I got loads of books for christmas that I should start reading first (18!!). Most of then are only 100 pages so it shouldn't take me long to get through them.

we then need to give a start date so everyone can get the said book in time to start reading.
we need to decide on reading times and a reading list.....
Let me check on play and amazon how much it is
I dont mind helping I have lots of free time now that sbbb is over! :p
