View Full Version : Real Nappies
It is real nappy week, with so many land fill sites, getting full, with disposable nappies, which take at least 10 years to brake down, isn't it time to go back to the real nappy ?. I used real nappies on my son over twenty years ago, and yes disposables where about then, and only ever used disposable ones on the odd time that we went out for a day. after buying them it was so much cheaper to just soak and then wash them, Nothing nicer than a fresh nappy blowing on the washing line. I can not believe the price they charge for disposable ones.
I used real nappies on Ciaran and started using them on Liam too, but unfortunately he has ultra sensitive skin (to the point where, when I hold him, if you look at his skin afterwards, he has handprints on them) so I am unable to use them on him for the moment - I am hoping that i might still be able to use them on him at some point but certainly can't at the moment.
I used cotton bottoms and they are so easy to use and work out so much cheaper, I am quite frustrated that I can't use them with Liam.

My sister use's really nappies. The one's sha has at the moment are ready made shaped you just like disposable's except you need to pin them, but when her baby is bigger, she's got different one's that just velco, they are great, and much cheaper. She got this like school plimpsol bag for wet/dirty one's when they got out.
She just save's them all up, she say's it only makes an extra 2-3 loads of washing a week. So in the end it's all worth it.
so please that you both are supporters of the real nappy, all this week, there is campaigns to get the younger mum's to use the real nappies, and save themself money at the same time.
Have to confess we use disposables, but my mum swears by the traditional nappy - safety pins and all.

My mate won't use anything but dispoable, i even offered to buy her some of the velco one's , but she doesn't want them. Say's her house is not big enought to have nappies drying all over it.

I used the real nappies on marley when we were at home but used disposable when she went to the childminders when I was at work. I found that it was easier to toilet train marley earlier by using the real nappies instead of the disposable.
Disposables draw the wetness away from their skin, so they can't feel when they have done anything, whereas they can feel when they have done something when wearing a real nappy. I'm hoping Liam grows out of this sensitive skin problem and disposables cost a fortune and i've saved Ciarans old nappies still, so they are all ready and waiting to be used. There was no better sight than seeing Ciaran's nappies drying on the line in the summer
I have always used disposibles im afraid,i havent got the time for anymore washing right now,the pile is big enough as it is!

have you tried silk liners? or even just fleece?
although we have problems keeping Sarah in cloth ones as she keeps breaking out in rashes in them - which clear up as soon as she is in a disposable. We do keep trying and we have managed to have her mainly in cloth - Christopher was in cloth from a year - and Sarah has been since birth - and number 3 will be too

i'd like to be good & use real ones, they do look lovely on peoples washing lines, but i'm lazy also i'm out at work all day, so anyway i can make things easier for me i take that option!
When I have another child I'm giving up work so I'll probably try real ones then
i used real nappies on niall for a few weeks, but then went to disposables, and it has just been disposables for niamh too,
i know a woman who used nappies that weren't recyclable (obviously) but were eco friendly. if anyone is interested, i'm sure i could find out more for you.

I work in a nursery and the number of children using real nappies now is growing I have to admit they aren't the nicest of things to change but what nappies are
