There are quite a lot of year nines on here so I thought it would be good to make up a thread similar to the one for GCSEs. I also thought it might be good to test each other to see what we need to revise?

o god dont remind me! lol erm ive still got loads to do and sats are in about 1 week! still have no idea what simultaneous equations areSimultaenous equations are basically two equations where x and y are equal in both of them. You'd probably get asked to solve them.

Example:

y=2x+5
x=y-15

Then you cross multiply and substitute values into different forms of the equations, and come out with the value for x and y. Simple really :D

Any revision guide should explain it to you properly. Thats just what i remember of then from the top of my head.

o god dont remind me! lol erm ive still got loads to do and sats are in about 1 week! still have no idea what simultaneous equations are Do you understand changing the subject of a formula? I couldn't understand that if my life depended on it. If you don't have a revision guide I could scan in the page on simultaneous equations.

You'll probably only have to answer, like, 3 questions max on algebra on the whole maths paper. Its a really small part of the SATs. If you dont understand that one thing, then you'd only lose maybe 4/5 marks max. Hardly important, really.

Looking at the bigger scale of things, the SATs tests aren't that important, because if your an A* student, and dail your SATs, they'll still put you in the high sets and put you in for the higher teir exams at GCSEs. I wouldn't worry too much about it, if i were you.

Just enjoy not having to do coursework while you can!!

yeh ive got all the revision books etc lol so what are the main topics in the maths paper?

Kim

It varies with the year and the levels of the paper that you are doing. What paper are you doing?

We have been told not to worry about them too much by our english and maths teachers, but in science it's like they're the end of the world. What is the importance of the science papers? I was thinking it could be more important because of the two separately awarded science GCSEs.

5-7. Missed 6-8 by like 3 marks:( In the 5-7 mock that I did, the main topics were shape, constructions, proportional division, changing the subject.

ye we got told our science ones are really important i think its beacuse if you do the lower paper at gcse then you can only get a grade c at the most at gcse and there are a lot of people in the top set in our year for science

Your teacher probably just wants to look like he/she is a better teacher then the others, if you lot get better grades, cause you put more effort in

Your SATs results dont affect anything though. If your good at the subject, then you'll do well in your mocks, and you'll get put in higher tiers at GCSEs. I mean, SATs are good enough to compare how good you are with your mates, but thats the only thing i found they were good for. This country has too many exams!! We should go over to the New Zealand system, where you start off with year 11 GCSE equlivelants.

i agree about too many exams- but be glad you don't live in Hungary- my mate said they have tests every day and they go from yr9 sats level straight to A level with nothing in between! they have to do speaking and listening every day.

good luck anyone doing their SATs this year, and remember they aren't worth much compared to GCSEs and then later on GCSEs will mean nothing compared to A levels!

Don't worry about your SATS, as soon we got into year 10 we were told to forget about them because they didn't mean much and our GCSES are way more important. My teacher said that the eacher assesments usually turn out more accurate than SATs anyway, at our school anyway. Good luck to everyone whos doing them soon :)

22-04-2006, 11:16
In our school they affect what groups you get put into next year.. that's the whole point of SATs here. Oh yeah, and also to see how much you improved in levels from Year 6.

If you get A*s all the time, then fail your SATs competly, they'll still put you into the top groups. What you get wont affect that, because 9 times out of 10, they've alreadyd decided what groups your going to go into before the resutls even come out.

I'm doing Macbeth, and I have to do it in the gym :crying:. I'm going to have to wear like 5 extra tops on that day, the gym in my school is freezing. In my school one of the top sets from each half of the year are doing much ado about nothing, I think because the school doesn't have enough Macbeth books.

I think it's totally unfair we don't get our English results back til September... I know they can't exactly give them back before them but I'll be wondering for the entire summer what I got... I'm not worried about the writing paper because I like writing stories... I'm a bit worried about the reading because some of the questions on there are very hard and I didn't even complete the practise mock one so I got 18 which is a level 5... I really am worried about the Macbeth one though because I HATE Macbeth and although yeah I'm starting to understand a bit, I'll probably be stuck on most of it :(

i think ive got it now starch test is a test to see if there is any starch in the leaves if there is the iodine will go black heres the 6 steps

1)cover the palnt in darkness for24 hours
2)now let it in light for 24 hours but cover part of a leaf with black tape(so no light can get to it) and put another leaf in a tube with no carbon dioxide in it
3)take the leaves of the pant and heat them for a few mins
4) soak them in warm alcahol to make them go colourless
5)now soak them in warm water to get rid of dirt/germs
6) put iodine on them if starch is present the leaf should go balck you should find that the part which was covered in black tape wont be black because it wont have been able to photosynthesise properly nor will the leaf which was placed in a tube with hardly any carbon dioxide

you should have done the experiment in lesson some time

i know, what was i thinking?! its cos i found maths fairly easy at gcse, but it gets so much harder lol! but they should definitely put mental maths into gcse and even alevel, cos then it would make them a bit easier lol!

Maths isn't hard at GCSE, we've just had 3 crap teachers, which hasn't helped us. We haven't even finished the course, and we leave in 3/4 weeks. All hopes lost!

SATs was alright, because most the stuff you covder in year 7 and 8 anyway, and the rest is logic. Thats how i managed to get high level7 's on them all.

How did everyone's Maths go?

I did the 5-7 paper and got a bit confused lol! I answer all the questions, but some just confused me and I think I did them wrong. The second paper with the triangles where you had to say true of false, did you need a protractor for that or not?
The mental maths was quite easy, until the last few questions where I got confused lol. Ah well I found them easier than I thought I would. :)

Kim
03-05-2006, 15:43
I got confused in the last parts of the second paper and there was quite a lot on topics which I am not very good:( Mental maths was fine until I started rubbing out correct answers and putting wrong ones:( then this woman comes along and opens the door by which I was seated and I was freezing and after the exam this girl smacked me in the face.

03-05-2006, 15:48
Aww well as long as you got most of it right, I'm sure a couple of wrong marks won't make much difference :)

Aww, did the girl do it on purpose? Or by accident?

My arm hurt a bit during the second test, as I hit my friend on my head (as a joke) and she hit me on the arm (as a joke, but it hurt! :rotfl: ).

Aww Kim, it's just year 9, as we're not the youngest or the oldest so we're really cool  Year 10 will be better :)

Lol aww Nicole, I didn't know you were supposed to use a compass for the Microphone thing! I just labelled R in the two bottom corners! :rotfl:

You can go off the scale and get the level that is one lower than the bottom level of your paper, and an N is worse than that, a fail, ungraded or whatever.

Not at first, Macbeth was more or less controlled by his wife. Murder was something that really layed heavily on his conscience until he killed Duncan and then his servants, and had had a second meeting with the three witches.

Just found out before lunch I got a level 6 in Science!! I am estatic (sp?) :D I thought I was going to get a level 5 again (that's what I got in year 6 and my mocks) I know I can do better than that since I'm 2nd from top band but blame the teachers!! Some got level 5's, most got level 6's and 2 of my mates got level 7!! Most of us are meant to get a level 7 being in the 2nd from top band and all that

I'm actually a little disappointed with my maths one, but it can't be helped, I've had a completely rubbish teacher for two years and we have never got an hours' work done in any one lesson.

My English teacher said that the SAT results actually arrive back at the individual schools on August 23.

Kim what did you get in maths?

7 which decimalises to a 7.2. My school just randomly decided to do that for setting, but I don't think it will go on our records decimalised.

Kim how can you be upset by that! A 7 is amazing! which paper did you take?

Kim
11-07-2006, 20:03
I did the 5-7, was a matter of marks away from being put in the 6-8 paper. I got all of the geometry questions wrong in it - just as I thought. I was predicted a 6, but my maths teacher once said that she thought I could get an 8.

Hi,

I got; Maths - 8; Science - 7; English - 7.

Well done everyone, you all did really well.

 I am a wreck in exams, usually I just end up diving straight into it. On maths papers I never have enough time to finish because I end up spending longer than I should on questions because I am so paranoid that I've made a stupid mistake or haven't shown my working out properly. Speaking of which, I HATE showing it! Sometimes you work things out mentally but then you have to waste precious time writing down your damn workings out! And like I said I am very neurotic about these things, so I have like every little gap filled to make sure it's enough LOL. And I'm too stubborn to leave a question if I can't remember how to do it (which is so frustrating), so I end up wasting time on that too.
With English, I end up writing loads too. In the Shakespeare paper, where we had to compare the two scenes, I had loads of stuff about the first scene, but then I ran out of time so I had hardly anything about the second one LOL. But luckily the person collecting it up was very understanding, and waited patiently while I scribbled down the end of my sentence. It probably didn't even make sense. If I look around in exams everyone else is finished with like half an hour to go and I'm still frantically scribbling away.

I saw my name then and I thought 'what the..?' lol.

As soon as I saw the Samantha Nixon the other day I knew it must have been you. And then I saw 'What time is it..?' and the Sam Nixon/Phil Hunter banner and I thought it had to be. So I checked your profile and when it said how many animals you had I thought.. well, nobody else is gonna have that many animals. :D And of course it said you were a twin.. :)
