ok, well, this is yet another sam and phil script (who else) and it's set pretty much now, although Sam and Stuart have already been going out for a couple of months

Chapter 1

Phil breathed a heavy sigh, as he got out of his car, activated the automatic locking system and made his way towards the entrance of Sun Hill Police Station.

Here we go again, he thought to himself, yet another day of dealing with low-life scum, endless mounds of paperwork and oh yeah, witnessing the endless talents of the ‘supercouple’.

That’s what Phil had dubbed Sam and Stuart since they became an item a couple of months ago. Between their smirking to one another across the room, their ongoing flirting around the office and their incredibly annoying habit of always getting the required result on just about any and every case they worked on, Phil was pretty fed up of the whole situation.

Or course, he was totally jealous. He still harboured many feelings for Sam, which went far beyond friendship, and while Sam had never publicly returned these feelings, he had always felt a bond between them, which Sam now appeared to have completely moved on from.

And it’s my fault, Phil told himself for the millionth time in about 2 months, and now I’ve lost her for good.

Collectively, between Cindy, Kate, Heather and most recently, the way he had treated his brother, Phil couldn’t say he blamed her for looking elsewhere, although he would never admit that to anyone.

Nor would he let people see how much it hurt him inside to watch Sam so obviously happy with another man, especially one as slimy as Stuart Turner.

She thinks she’s so clever, he thought, when really the guys a complete cheat. He showed up here as a DC, and the next thing anyone knows, he’s being offered a DS’s position on a plate. A DS’s position which should have been taken by someone who had actually worked here before, and not a slime ball who just showed up one day.

Now he knew he was just humouring the green eyed monster, as he had never really got on with Suzie, and actually shuddered the thought of having her as his equal.

Upon walking into CID, Phil wasn’t surprised to see Sam sat on the end of Stuart’s desk, while he was sat in front of her on his chair. She was hanging on his every word, and giggling at some private joke between the two.

He walked over and took a seat at his desk, moments before DI Manson and DCI Meadows walked in, asking for quiet.

Phil stole a quick glace back in Sam’s direction, who, while still sitting on his desk had turned her back to Stuart so she was facing her commanding officers. Phil was unable to miss the protective hand Stuart had placed around Sam’s back, and onto the inside of her thigh.

Refocusing his attention, Phil zoned into the current discussion just in time to hear Neil saying, “With much resistance, we have successively managed to win back the services of the newly appointed hero of Nottingham.” He gestured behind him, just as DC Jo Masters entered the room, to applause and whistles.

“You caught the bad guys then?” Mickey shouted over the din.

“You doubted me?” Jo asked with raised eyebrows.

Mickey, on noticing her expression knew better than to disagree, “Never”, he told her. “It’s good to have you back.”

“It’s good to back”, she told him with a wink.

Phil had once again let his eyes wander back to Sam, who whispering something into Stuarts ear. The second his face broke into a smirk, Sam looked up, as if sensing that someone was watching her. She met Phil’s gaze, before he looked away sharply and tried to cover up his being caught by shouting to Jo, “It’s nice to have some eye candy back around here again.” That comment received a few more wolf whistles, before she playfully slapped him on the arm, before commenting, “Nice to know some things never change.”

Chapter 2

While everyone was busy welcoming Jo back, Sam gave Stuart a quick kiss on the cheek, before picking up some files and returning to her own desk.

Try as she might to concentrate on her paperwork, she couldn’t get the hurt she had seen in Phil’s eyes out of her mind. After several minutes feeling guilty, she shook her head in an attempt to clear her thoughts.

I’m with Stuart now, she reminded herself, and I like him. He’s caring and funny and smart and he seems to be genuinely interested in me, rather than everything that walks past in a skirt.

Not for the first time that morning, she sighed as her eyes wandered over to where Phil was now talking to Neil and Zain.

Probably about some important case, she reasoned. Maybe they had a new lead on the Amy Tennant case, although she doubted it that was true, it would have been confined to 3 officers.

She felt those feelings of helplessness and despair inside her, those feelings she had felt when her own daughter Abi had been abducted a couple of years ago. While most people sympathised with Amy’s parents, Sam truly knew what they were going through.

Still watching Phil, subconsciously now, she remembered how he had helped her through that horrific time. He had stood by her for months, comforting her. He had even tried to warm her off that monster by the name of Hugh Wallis, Abi’s abductor, but she hadn’t listened. When indeed, Hugh turned out to be not only Abi’s abductor, but also her manipulator and psychological bully, Phil had continued to support her, and not said, “I told you so”, not even once.

But then everything went so wrong, she remembered, thinking of Cindy, Kate and most recently Heather Lee’s, the solicitor, who Phil had slept with to get a result on a frustrating case.

She jumped a little as a shrill beep emanated from her computer screen, indicating that she had received an Instant Message. Opening it, she read that it was from Jo.

Jo: Hey Sam, u ok?

Sam instantly felt guilty. She and Jo, despite earlier clashes and disagreements, have developed what some may call a close friendship, and she hadn’t really welcomed her back, in her attempt to avoid Phil as much as possible.

Sam: Yeah, I’m fine. Sorry Jo, I didn’t mean to ignore you. It really is good to have you back, it’s not been the same around here since you left.

Jo: :) Thanks Sarge. Nice to know I was missed. So . . . how much have I missed?

Sam: Not much. Ramini left just as Suzie took her Sargeants exams but by the time she realised she’d passed, the DCI had already promoted a DC from another station.

Jo: Oooh, I bet that went down well. I take it that’s the guy who had his placed intimately on your leg before??? :D

Sam: JO!!!

Jo: Sorry, but I couldn’t help but notice. So . . . ?

Sam: What?

Jo: Details?

Sam: There are no details. We’ve only been together for a few weeks, a couple of months at most.

Jo: And what about Phil?

Sam felt a little anger bubbling beneath the surface, at the same time a lump formed in the back of her throat.

Sam: What about Phil? It had nothing to do with him who I choose to go out with, and come to think of it, it has nothing to do with you either DC Masters.

Sam shut down her PC, grabbed her coat and made towards the exit doors of CID, knocking her chair flying as she did so.

Chapter 3

Phil heard someone leaving their seat rather abruptly and was taken aback when he looked up to find it was Sam. As she grabbed her coat, knocking her chair over in the process and left the office before anyone had a chance to stop her, Phil fought an overwhelming urge to follow her and make sure she was ok.

Leave it, he told himself, it’s not like she’d tell you if anything was wrong now anyway.

He gave yet another wistful sigh as he remembered the days when he and Sam used to talk about everything. He saw Jo get up from her desk and make like she was following Sam, so satisfied that someone cared, and feeling rather defeated, he returned to his work.

Stuart, who had been on the phone while witnessing Sam’s rather strange departure, after hanging up his phone call, rose to his feet, aiming to find Sam and ensure she was ok.

However, he was intercepted halfway to the door, by a dark-haired woman.

Jo, I think the Governor called her, Stuart remembered, thinking back to the previous little welcome home party they had had only a few minutes earlier.

“Mind if I go?” she asked.

Stuart gave her a dubious look, wanting to find Sam himself really.

Jo persisted, “I’ll make sure she’s ok.”

Stuart seemed content with that and turned to make his way back to his own desk.

As Jo made her way down the stairs from CID and into the main reception area of Sun Hill Police Station, she noticed Sam, standing at the far edge of the car park, leaning on the railings.

She walked up behind her, only speaking when she got closer, “Sam, listen, I’m sorry. You know how much my foot likes to live in my mouth. I shouldn’t have said what I did about Phil.”

Only when she came up beside Sam, did Jo notice that her mascara had run when she’d let a few unruly tears fall.

“Oh Sam”, Jo coaxed, pulling her into a hug. Sam rested her head on Jo’s shoulder for several moments, while Jo felt her body shake as she sobbed.

Then, Sam seemed to regain a little more control, pulling away from Jo, sniffing and rubbing the tears off her face.

“Jo, I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me. I never . . . “

“Cry?”

Sam looked down at her feet a little sheepishly.

Jo attempted to make her feel better, “Hey, don’t worry Sarge, your secrets safe with me.”

Sam smiled by way of gratitude.

“Sam, feel free to tell me to mind my own business, but are you gonna tell me what has the great Samantha Nixon crying like a baby?”

“Hey?” Sam protested, slapping her playfully on the arm. Jo giggled a little as Sam continued. “It’s just . . . Phil”, she admitted after a minute.

“He’s not very happy about you going out with this DS?”

“No, it’s just the opposite. I mean, when we first started going out, he tried to put Stuart off by telling him I was a grandma, but apart from that . . .”

Jo rolled her eyes and commented, “Typical Phil.”

Sam smiled at this, knowing the young DC was right; he was definitely a Phil thing to do.

“It’s just . . . I like Stuart, I do, but I thought Phil would be . . . I don’t know?” she resigned.

“Jealous?” Jo asked.

Sam shrugged, not sure herself. “I’m a horrible person aren’t I?”

“Well . . . “ Jo began, but didn’t get a chance to finish, as DS Stuart Turner came up behind them.

“Hey.”

ok, well this is a short chapter, but im in college

Stuart came up beside Sam, sliding his arm around her waist as he did.

“Hey, are you ok?” he asked her, sounding genuinely concerned.

Sam immediately felt stupid. Wiping several tears from her face, she tried to sound as reassuring as she could, “Yeah Stuart, I’m fine. Tank-you”. She smiled to try and back her claims.

She glanced over at Jo, who seemed to have found something rather interesting on her shoes. Suddenly, she felt very uncomfortable stood there.

She took a step forward, so Stuarts arm dropped down to his side. “Well”. She started glancing down at her watch, “My shift finished 5 minutes ago, so I’m going to go home.”

She turned her back on her best friend and her boyfriend and all but sprinted towards her car.

“Do you want a lift?” Stuart’s voice called after her.

“No thanks, I’m fine”, she called back, feeling worse than she had in her entire life.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Later that night, Sam stepped out of the hot, bubbly bath she had been soaking in for the last hour to find she had missed a call. Pushing the message button, she listened to Stuart’s voice as she dried herself off and put on her favourite silk PJ’s.

“Sam, it’s just me ringing to make sure you’re ok. You can ring me back if you want, I’ll be here all night. See you tomorrow at work”.

Sam sighed. She had hoped a long, hot soak in a bubbly bath would clear her mind and let her focus better, but all it had achieved was to wrinkle her skin so she looked like a prune.

Lying down on her bed on her stomach, she reached beneath her bed to pull out her diary.

Opening it up to a fresh page, she began to write:

Made a total fool of myself today. Now Stuart thinks I’m a moody cow and Jo thinks I’m a selfish bitch only out to get I want

But that’s not true.

I like Stuart, I really do. He’s nice and smart and funny.

Ugh, she thought to herself. I can’t do this tonight. She slapped the diary shut, pulled up the covers around her and switched off the light.

Phil was woken from his peaceful dreams by the shrill ringing of his telephone. With the overwhelming urge to stop the horrific noise just winning over the urge to go back to sleep, he rolled over and lifted the receiver off the hook.

Rubbing his eyes, he answered, “Hello?”

“Phil?” came the voice at the other end.

It was a voice Phil recognised all too well, and the sound of Sam so early in the morning made him sit up a little straighter in bed. “Is everything ok?”

Unbeknown to Phil, Sam smiled a little smile at the other end, touched at the obvious concern in his voice.

“Thanks, I’m fine Phil. Sorry to call you so early, but we’ve got a huge assault case and the DCI wants to know if you can come in.”

“Now?”

“As soon as possible.”

Phil had planned to catch up on some well-earned sleep this morning, but since he was already awake, he figured he might as well do something useful. Besides, if he was going to be working with Sam . . .

Don’t think like that, he scolded himself, just so long as that slime ball Turner isn’t there, it’ll be ok.

“What’s the matter? Can’t that place function without me for one morning?” he asked, trying to break the tension, which always seem to exist between them nowadays.

He heard Sam chuckle over the phone, a good sound, before she answered, “Much as this may surprise you, this station can actually cope very well without you Mr Self Centred. It’s just that Suzie and Zain are both off with some virus thingy and we couldn’t get hold of Jo. Me, Stuart and Terry are already working on it, but there’s only so much we can do.”

Had to jinx it, didn’t you, Phil questioned himself.

The thought of working with Sam and Stuart making googly eyes at one another all day made him want to just roll back over and go back to sleep. But he knew how pathetic and so very obvious that would be.

Noticing Phil’s hesitation, Sam prodded “Phil?”

Her voice jerked him back out of his thoughts, as he tried to cover up his uncomfortable pause.

“Yeah, sorry Sam, I got distracted, something out of the window, anyway, . . . yeah, it’s fine, tell the DCI I’ll be there in an hour.”

“Ok, will do”, she promised, before saying “See you soon” and hanging up.

Filled with dread, Phil went to get himself ready for what he guessed was going to be a long day.

Sam put the phone down and sighed, not for the first time that morning. She had notices his obvious pause at her mention of Stuart but . . .

Get over yourself Nixon, he’s moved on, he just doesn’t like Stuart.

Feeling someone looking at her, she turned to see Stuart smiling at her from across the room, where he stood with Terry. She smiled back, trying to cover up the fact that inside, her heart was breaking.

Returning to her work, she tried not to think about the fact that she would soon be working with both Phil and Stuart.

Sam closed the door behind her, leaning on it for a moment and closing her eyes.

I’m so glad today is over, she thought, remembering how awkward she had felt all day. What with trying to avoid Stuart, and then feeling bad about it, and then trying to avoid Phil, and still having feelings towards Phil, and then feeling uncomfortable around them both, knowing that they were both uncomfortable too, it had been one hell of a day.

“Mum?” came a voice from somewhere inside her house.

Willing her body to move, she walked through the tiny porch area, closing the porch door behind her, and placing her bag and keys on the side table, she shouted back to her daughter, “Abi? Where are you?”

“In the front room mum”, came Abi’s reply.

Walking into the front room and shaking her jacket off, she asked, “So, how was college?”

Abi shrugged, concentrating on the TV, “School-like.”

Sam didn’t have the energy nor the will tonight to even try and invoke a response, so she walked out to wards the kitchen shouting, “You want a drink Abi?”

Abi walked into the kitchen carrying a glass of water, “No thanks, I’ve already got one.” She leaned against the doorframe, watching her mother make herself a strong cup of coffee.

“That bad huh?” she asked Sam.

“Sorry?” Sam asked, confused.

“Strong black coffee equals a bad day at the office”, Abi informed her.

“Abi, I always drink strong black coffee”, she reminded her daughter with a smile.

Abi tilted her head to one side, considering this. “True”, she began, “but I’m not wrong am I? There is something wrong.”

Sam took a seat at the breakfast bar, hands around her hot drink and stared into her cup as though all the answers she wanted were hidden there.

“Mum?” Abi probed. “Ok, now you’re starting to worry me, what’s wrong?”

“Isn’t it the mothers job to ask the awkward questions?”

“Usually, but I think we can make an exception.”

Sam smiled, no matter how much she hated Abi’s father, she was eternally grateful for him, because without him, she wouldn’t have the most beautiful daughter in the world.

She knew it was pointless to even try and put Abi off the scent, now she knew something was wrong. “It’s just . . . Phil. And Stuart. And the whole situation. Abi, I don’t know what to do anymore. Stuart is so nice and kind and considerate and I think he really likes me, but . . . . it’s just . . . he’s not . . . “

“He’s not Phil?” Abi finished for her.

Sam nodded. “I’m so stupid.”

“You’re no stupid Mum”, Abi told her. “You can’t help who you fall for.”

“But I have Stuart and he’s been so good to me and I don’t want to hurt him.”

“I know Mum, but by doing this, you’re hurting yourself and Phil.”

Sam snorted. “I don’t think Phil even notices me any more.”

“Now I know that’s not true and I think you do too. Phil is mad about you and I think you should tell him how you really feel.”

“It’s not that easy Abi. Stuart . . .”

“Is a nice guy”, Abi interrupted, “but he’s going o get hurt anyway, whether it’s now or in a years time. Don’t you think it’s better on him to know now?”

“Mum, just what you want to do, think about yourself for once. Think about this though, How would you feel if Phil left town tomorrow and you never got the chance to tell him how much you love him?”

Abi walked out, ignoring her mothers protests of, “I never said I loved him?

“Morning”, Sam acknowledged Stuart as she walked over to her desk the following morning.

“Morning”, he replied, before he lent over his desk to give her a kiss. The look on his face when she pulled away was enough to make tears well in Sam’s eyes.

I’m such a bitch.

Returning to his desk, he made himself look busy, shuffling some case notes around and desperately avoiding her eye.

Walking over to his desk, she said “Sorry, Stuart. It’s just . . . can we talk?”

“Sure”. He replied, not glancing up from his desk. When she made no attempt to leave his desk, he eventually looked up asking, “Now?”

“Are you busy?”

“Nothing that can’t wait.”

“Ok, good, you want to grab a coffee?”

Stuart put the files he’d been shifting around down, and motioning to the door, he told her. “After you”.

Placing two coffee filled mugs on the table, Sam sat down, across from Stuart. They were sat in the far corner, away from the hustle and bustle of the uniform officers who were on a break.

“Stuart, there’s something I need to tell you.” She continued to stare down into her coffee cup, too afraid to look into Stuart’s eyes.

“Well, from the tone of your voice, I guess it’s not about my choice of clothing!”

Sam glanced at him briefly, smiling. “Stuart, it’s just that I think this might not be such a good idea.”

“You mean us?”

Sam nodded. “You have to know that it isn’t you though. I really do like you, you’re funny and smart and kind and under different circumstances . . . “, she trailed off, not wanting to give him any false hope. Now that she had started, she knew she was doing the right thing for everyone. In the long run.

However, that doesn’t help me in the present, she thought, carrying on as best she could.

“It’s me, I’m not ready for another relationship. Well, not with . . . “, she wasn’t making a very good job of this.

Stuart, who had remained silent through her ramblings so far, now spoke up. “With me?”

Sam noticed a somewhat understanding tone in his voice. Looking up, she saw he was smiling, although the smile was obviously filled with hurt.

“I’m so sorry.”

He placed his hand over hers on the table. “It’s alright Sam, you don’t have to explain.”

“But I want to”, she protested.

“No, I mean it. You don’t have to. Don’t get me wrong, these last few months have been amazing and you’re amazing Samantha, you really are. I’m going to miss you, but I was kidding myself, thinking that I could ever come between you two.”

“Sorry?”

Sam was sat with her back to the counter and didn’t notice Phil come in and order a coffee. Giggling slightly at the look of confusion of her pretty face, Stuart nodded his head in the direction of where Phil stood, now paying for his purchases. Turning around, she saw Phil and meeting his gaze, she blinked back the tears that had been threatening to fall all morning.
__________________________________________________ ______________

Phil noticed Sam and Stuart sat together in the corner, holding hands across the table.

Trying not to be noticed, he paid for his coffee. However, he couldn’t help but look, as he did, both Sam and Stuart glancing in his direction.

Oh great, he thought, hastily making his exit from the canteen, they were probably laughing at how pathetic I am.

__________________________________________________ ______________

“Sam, I’ve seen the way you look at one another, along with the rest of the station. You know I don’t like the guy, but I know he makes you happier than I ever could. I don’t know much about the history between the two of you, only what I’ve heard, but all I need is to see you together and it’s obvious you were made for each other.”

Those tears that had been welling up inside her, now escaped, tumbling down her cheeks as she held Stuart’s hands in her own. “I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be. Just promise me one thing?”

“What?”

“Tell him how you feel.”

Stuart made to leave, as Sam tried to wipe the tears that had fallen from her eyes. Before he had a chance to leave, Sam grabbed his hand, “Friends?” she asked.

Stuart took a step back towards her and kissing her on the forehead, he promised, “The best.”

As she watched him walk away, she honestly thought, with the exception of finding Abi after her abduction, she had never been so grateful to anyone in all her life.

Sam had been watching Phil from across the room for several minutes, before she glanced over at Stuart, who gave her a reassuring nod.

No time like the present, she thought, getting up from her desk and making her way over to Phil’s desk.

“Hey”, she greeted him.

Phil looked up from his desk, and although he looked a little surprised, he smiled and said “Hi.”

What do I say? She asked herself, sorry I’ve been rejecting you for the last two years, but hey, that’s all in the past, do you want to go out for a drink?

Phil, upon noticing her hesitation and apparent discomfort, asked, “Sam, are you ok? Need some help on a case or something?”

Jolted out of her thoughts, Sam tried to regain her composure a little, stuttering a bit as she explained. “Um . . . no, not really. Phil, I was just wondering . . . can we talk? Later I mean? Not here?”

Totally confused, but intrigued at the same time, Phil said, “Of course, anytime.”

Sam visually relaxed. “Good, ok, well, I have to go out for a bit now. I have a doctor’s appointment in half an hour, but when I get back, you want to grab a coffee or something?”

Phil nodded. “Sam, is everything ok?”

Touched by his concern, she simply nodded.

“I mean with the doctors?”

“Oh, yeah, it’s just a check-up for my high blood pressure. No lack of stress in this job. I have to go every 6 months. I won’t be long.”

“Ok, then, well, good luck and I’ll see you when you get back.”

“See you later.”

“How did the doctor’s go then Sam?” Phil asked, on her return to the office.

Walking over to her desk, she placed her bag on the back of her chair and looked up at Phil.

“Erm . . . oh, it was fine”, she lied. Really, she wasn’t sure what to think. Everything had been normal, until the doctor had asked her to take part in some extra test thingies.

It’s just new procedure, the doctor had told her, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

“Are you sure? You seem a little flustered. You know you can tell me anything, don’t you Sam.”

Looking up into those huge brown eyes, which were currently filled with concern, made Sam’s heart melt, and she realised, that what she was about to do was the right thing. “You busy?” she asked, her nagging doubts about the doctors already forgotten, as she led him out of the office.

Once outside the front of Sun Hill Police Station, Sam lent on the railings, facing the station, while Phil stood, somewhat uncertain, a few feet away.

“Phil, there’s something I need to tell you and I need you to understand that if you want nothing to do with it, I completely understand.”

“Huh?’ Phil frowned.

“It’s just . . . “

“Sam, you’re starting to scare me”, he joked. “Just spit it out will you?”

“Stuart and I have broken up”, she blurted.

Phil was taken aback slightly, “Oh.” Then he released that Sam must be upset, “Sam, I’m sorry, he’s an idiot.”

“I ended it Phil . . . there’s someone else.”

Phil tried to keep his voice as casual as he could as he asked, “Who?”

She looked at him, straight in the eyes, and watched as a wave of shock came over his handsome features, closely followed by confusion.

“I just, I liked Stuart, I really did, but even he noticed that we have . . . something!” she said, searching for the right word and unable to find one. “I know I’ve said some pretty nasty things to you in the past, but I think I was . . . scared!” That’s not a thing she liked to admit to.

Phil had watched Sam throughout her explanation, which wide eyes and an open mouth.

“If you want nothing to do with me, I understand. You gave me enough chances.” Sam was scared he was about to reject her, repaying all the kindness she’d shown him in the past, whenever he’d tried to ask her out. Looking at the floor, she could feel her heart beating, as the moments silence, seemed to last a lifetime, as she prepared herself for the worst.

“Are you kidding me?” Sam was still looking at the floor, and couldn’t see the huge grin that was spreading over his face.

Thinking he was being serious, Sam nodded and said, “I’m sorry, I’ll go.”

As she began to walk away, Phil grabbed her arm and said, “Don’t you dare Nixon”, before pulling her close and covering her soft lips with his own.

Sam, a little resistant at first, had melted into the kiss within seconds, wrapping her arms around his neck, while he placed his hands on her slim waist.

ok, i'm finally updating!

not quite sure where this chapter came from, it was just, kind of, a 'go with the flow' thing

anyways, i hope you all enjoy!

“Zain, quick, come here”, Jo tried to whisper to her fellow DC, who sat at his desk, next to hers.

Looking more than a little confused, he got up out of his seat and made his way over to the window, where she stood looking out onto the car park. What?”

Glancing in the direction of where she was pointing, Zain couldn’t help but gasp at what he saw. “Phil and Sam?”

Jo just stood there, watching and grinning.

“Guess he finally broke her then”, he commented.

“Oi”, Jo belittled him, “Sam does not need . . . breaking! She just needs . . . “

“Phil?”

Jo nodded, the insanely huge grin returning to her face once again.

__________________________________________________ ________________________________________

Mustering up all of her strength, Sam pulled away from Phil, gasping a little.

“Phil, we can’t, people will talk.” Looking up at the huge window of CID, which overlooked the car park, Sam felt her heart stop.

Apparently noticing too, Phil replied, “Looks like it’s a bit late for that now anyway. Let ‘em talk.” At her unconvinced smile, a thought suddenly occurred to him, “You’re not ashamed of me are you?”

“No, Phil of course not, it’s just . . . “ She trailed off, her gaze wandering back up to the second storey window, where Jo and Zain stood, apparently enjoying the show, from the grins plastered across both their faces.

“Well then”, Phil began, in a somewhat mischievous tone, “Let’s give them something to really talk about.”

“Phil? What do you . . .?”

But she never got a chance to finish her question, as he silenced her with a kiss, not quite as intense as the first had been, but still enough to make her heart do a little jump.

Temporarily forgetting the audience they had acquired, she was just getting into the kiss, when she felt Phil pull away, bend down, slide his arms behind her back and under her legs and sweep her off her feet, all in one fluid motion.

Sam couldn’t stop laughing as Phil walked towards the Main Entrance, carrying her in his strong arms. She felt a rush of love for him; it was this exact thing that made her like him so much. She loved his crazy little stunts and his unpredictability and the way he could always make her laugh, no matter how dire the situation was. In that moment, she was so happy; she couldn’t have cared less if the whole world was watching them.

It was somewhat of a struggle to get her through the door, having to crab walk sideways through the double doors, as a couple walked out tin the opposite direction, pausing to give Sam and Phil a disapproving look as they left the station.

“Phil”, Sam was still laughing, “Phil, you have to put me down. Quick, before someone see’s us.”

“DS Hunter, DS Nixon, what do you think you’re doing?”

“Oops, too late”, she whispered, still feeling a little giddy from her unusual mode of transport into the building.

Finally, placing Sam on her feet, she and Phil turned to find Superintendent Okaro coming towards them. “What on earth is going on here? DS Nixon, are you hurt?”

Sam felt guilty, as she saw genuine concern in her Super’s eyes. She had always admired Adam and felt bad that she had been caught messing around, while on duty. “Erm . . . not really Sir. I’m sorry, we were just . . . “

She glanced at Phil, willing his to come up with some reasonable excuse. She knew she would be disappointed, but still, she had to give him points for effort. “Actually, Sir, I’m afraid it’s my fault. I got a little carried away and I . . . “

“It appeared that it was Miss Nixon who was being carried away.”

It was taking all of Adam’s control not to burst out laughing at Sam’s expression of horror, at thinking she was in serious trouble, and Phil’s expression, trying his best to suppress a grin, looking like a naughty schoolboy who’d been caught sneaking an extra biscuit at dinnertime.

After a couple of moments, he could maintain his pretence no longer and let out a little giggle. At both Sam and Phil’s confused faces, he burst out in fully-fledged laughter.

Trying to regain some control over himself, he took a deep breath and addressed the two Sergeants more formally. “Please, in the future, try not to make your little show of affections in the front office.”

“Sir”, they answered in union, looking up at their commanding officer.

Walking away, they heard him mutter, “No matter how entertaining they are.”

Sam turned to shoot Phil a confused look, but while Phil was still staring after the Super, only he noticed the wink Adam gave him as he turned to go up the stairs.

Phil smiled and turning back to Sam, told her, “I think that went rather well.”

Sam didn’t know whether she wanted to hit him or hug him, so she decided to do neither, and with an exaggerated sigh, followed the direction in which the Super had gone, up to the ranks of CID, with Phil in close pursuit, asking “What?” the entire way. Sam’s only response was a smile.

only another short chapter, i'm afraid, but i constantly seem to have something else to do and i have to write my script inbetween

“What a day”, Sam complained, as she dropped down into her seat at her desk. She had been working with Phil all day on a case, involving a robbery, and two very reluctant witnesses. It turned out that the mother of a young teenage boy was actually her moth-in-law, who incidentally he hated, and so he’d broken into his own house and stolen all her jewellery and stuff to try and scare her away. In the end, no charges had been made and Phil and Sam had ended up working as a couple of social workers, instead of the trained Detectives that they were. Sam did not like to have her time wasted, running around of a wild goose chase.

Phil, who had followed her into CID came up behind her and began massaging the tense muscles in her shoulders. Sam looked around the office self-consciously; they had already been caught once today. The Super had been understanding, even happy, but she knew any more would be taking the Michael.

However, upon looking around, she saw not another soul in CID.

And it has been a hard day, she told herself.

Closing her eyes, she leant her head back on her chair and let Phil work his magic; he was pretty good. Just as she felt the knots in her muscles being rubbed out, Phil’s voice invaded her thoughts.

“You know what you need?”

Sam, who couldn’t force herself to open her eyes, replied, “Another one of you, I can put in my bag for when I’m stressed?”

Phil chose to ignore the comment, although he did smile. “A drink. Fancy going to the pub after work?”

“Sure”, Sam said, a little dreamily.

Noticing Sam was leaning back on her chair, with her eyes still firmly shut, Phil leant down over the top of her head and planted a sweet kiss on her lips. Surprised at first, Sam opened her eyes to see Phil’s upside down smile, as he leant over from behind her.

Placing a hand on the back of his neck, she pulled his closely until their lips met again, and again.

Obviously pre-occupied, neither Sam nor Phil had noticed Jo enter. Walking over to her desk with a roll of her eyes, she sat down, telling the couple to “Get a room”. Jumping apart like someone had fired a gun, Sam went an immediate shade of red.

“You shouldn’t sneak up on people like that”, Sam told her.

“Hey, there was no sneaking on my part Sarge. It’s you two”, she informed them, motioning around the otherwise empty room to emphasise her point. “Look, you’ve scared everyone else away.”

“Ha ha, DC Masters, very funny”, Sam said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Don’t you have work to be doing?”

“Hey, my fingers are working overtime here.”

Sam smiled at her, before the young DC turned back around to her desk.

Phil, who had watched the encounter between the two women in silence, kissed Sam on the forehead, before moving back off to his own desk. “I’ll pick you up at 8, ok?”

Sam nodded, “Fine”.

“Listen, I have to go out for a bit, but I’ll see you later”.

“Bye.”

Walking out of the office, Phil walked past Jo, who had her back turned to wards him, so he didn’t see the huge grin spread out across the DC’s face, as she turned to watch him exit CID.

“Gin and tonic?” Phil asked as he took his jacket off and placed it next to Sam at the only empty table left in the pub.

Taking her own jacket off, Sam nodded, “Please.”

As he made his way over to the bar, Sam couldn’t help but notice how good he looked tonight. In his burgundy, muscle hugging shirt (and my, those were good muscles), and jeans, she realised he didn’t look that different to the way he did everyday at work. It was more like, she was seeing him properly for the first time – and she liked what she saw. He turned round to smile and her, and realising she was string, she smiled back and made a show of getting her phone out of her little handbag, intending to text Abi and let her daughter know where she was.

Standing at the bar, waiting to get served. Phil couldn’t help but feel a little like he was mixed up in some sort of dream. Turning round to see her sitting at their table waiting for him, he thought, ‘Well, she’s still here at least’. He had been waiting for this opportunity for so long and he didn’t intend wasting it. He found his mind wandering to how good Sam looked tonight. Not that she didn’t always look good to him, but in her strappy baby pink top, light blue jeans and pink flip flops, she looked very different to the suit-clad Sam he was accustomed to.

After paying for their drinks, Phil made his way back over to where Sam sat, placing the drinks in front of her.

There was an awkward silence for a couple of minutes, before they both started to talk at exactly the same time.

Laughing it off, Phil told Sam, “You go first.”

“Oh, it wasn’t important, I was just going to ask if you’ve seen Maddie or Alfie recently?” Seeming to realise what se had said, she tried to amend “Not that they’re not important. I Just meant you know, it wasn’t a matter of life or death that I asked you right this second. Of course they’re important. I’m sorry.”

Phil smiled at her little outburst. “I know what you meant. I spoke to Kate last week and she said Alfie’s doing great. As for Maddie, I haven’t spoken to her for a couple of months now, but last time I did she was ok.”

Seeing a pained expression come over his handsome features, she realised what an idiot she was – she had brought up the single most painful subject Phil could talk about.

Way to go Nixon, she told herself.

“I’m sorry Phil, I didn’t mean to pry. I just . . .”

“It’s alright Sam, I know you meant well.”

Feeling the need to change the subject, Sam asked, “What were you going to say, then?”

“Oh, nothing. It doesn’t matter.”

Sam noticed his cheeks redden a little. “Come on Phil, what was it?”

“Really, Sam, it doesn’t matter. I was just being stupid as usual.”

Her raised eyebrows said it all, and Phil was just about to tell her what was on his mind when the doors to the pub burst open and half of the Metropolitan Police walked in.

Jo Masters was in the lead, visually searching the pub. Upon spotting Sam and Phil sat in the corner, she motioned for the other to follow, as she made her way towards them.

The cheekiest grin Sam had ever seen plastered all over the DC’s face, she went for sarcasm, “Fancy seeing you two here.”

A couple e of hours later, everyone sat around a huge table, Sam sat next to Phil with her legs draped over his own.

Jo sat beside her, currently proving her lack of knowledge on all tings football, as she tried to explain the offside rule to Suzie, who was even less knowing and didn’t even realise there was an offside rule. Phil looked over at Zain, who rolled his eyes to the heavens, sighed and asked, “How can you not know what the offside rule is?”

“Well, I think there are more important things in life than a bunch of men running around a muddy filed chasing a bag of air”, Suzie replied, in her usual, straight to the point, no-nonsense tone.

“Well yeah”, Sam agreed. Who had been playing with Phil’s hands on her lap, in an attempt to stop him poking her, “But I can’t argue about the men part”, she continued with a slight gleam in her eye as she turned to wink at Jo.

“Hey, Phil protested, resuming his poking of her in the side, knowing she was ticklish. Sam let out a little squeal, wriggling about to try and get away.

“God you two, get a room, would ya?” Gina told the couple.

“Speaking off”, Sam began, looking down at her watch, “I should really get going.”

“Can’t you stay for one more?” Jo asked, as Sam rose to her feet, her arm trailing behind her as Phil kept tight hold of her hand.

“Abi’s staying out tonight and she said she would call me later. I haven’t seen her for a while, so I don’t really want to miss her call.”

Jo smiled, she was very fond of Sam’s daughter. “She still having fun at Uni?”

“Yeah, she loves it.”

“Come on then you, I’ll take you home”, Phil told her.

“See you all tomorrow”, Sam told them.

“Bye”, Phil followed suit, downing the rest of his pint and getting to his feet. Putting his arm over Sam’s shoulder, they made their way towards the door.

“You two behave”, Jo called, suppressing a little giggle, as she watched Sam usher her boyfriend out of the pub, before anyone else noticed her cheeks had turned a scarlet colour.

Outside the smoky pub, the cold wind hit Sam suddenly, causing her to shiver involuntarily. Before she could refuse, she felt Sam’s jacket around her shoulders, before he moved away to flag a taxi.

__

Paying the driver, Phil escorted Sam all the way to her front door.

“You want to come in for coffee?” she asked with a smile.

Phil’s grin said it all and she opened the door and let him follow her in. She checked the phone for messages on her way to the kitchen to find none.

Putting her bag on the side and flicking the kettle on, she turned to find Phil standing in the doorway. Leaning against the frame.

“You come in you know”, she told him, as she went to get two mugs out of the cupboard. “Sit down.”

“Yes Serge”, he mocked with a smile as he sat down at the table in the centre of her kitchen.

“Sam, can I ask you something?”

Sam was a bit sceptical at his suddenly serious voice and acknowledged the frown on his face with one of her own. “Yeah?”

“What made you change your mind? About us? Well, me really?”

Sam had known this question would come, but tried to push it to the back of her mind. As if it would make the question go away, she got up from the table and turning her back on him, went back to making the coffee. “I never did”, she all but whispered.

“Sorry?”

Sam briefly looked back at him to see the confused expression on his face. Trying to explain, she began, “I never did. I always felt something for you. I was just scared. You weren’t exactly renown for your faithfulness and respect of women.”

“I know, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be”, she told him. “I’m not saying I likes who you were, but that’s in the past.” She took his hand across the table. “I wasn’t exactly perfect in the past either. We’re here now and all that matters s how much I love you.”

“You what?” Phil could not believe what he was hearing. “Did you mean that?” He had to be sure.

“More than anything.”

“Do you realise how long I have wanted to here you say that?” he asked, as he came up behind her, sliding his hands around her waist and nuzzling her neck with his chin.

Sam nodded. “I’m sorry I was . . .”

Phil leaned around her, to cut her off with a kiss. Breaking away, he told her, “I love you too.”

Turning fully around, Sam placed her arms around Phil’s neck. “You really mean that?”

Phil bent over a little to smother Sam’s lips with his own in a gentle kiss. Pulling away ever so slightly, Sam whispered, “I’ll take that as a yes then.”

Pulling his face closer to hers once more, this time their lips met with a passion, as Sam felt Phil push her up against the counter. The passion they had kept bottled up for so long erupted as hands roamed, their lips meeting again and again.

After several moments, Sam pulled back, gasping for breath.

She grabbed Phil’s hand, leading him to wards the door.

Realising where she was going Phil felt a little thrill inside, but he had to check. “Are you sure about this?”

Leaning in close again, she whispered “More than anything in my life.”

She resumed in leading Phil out of the kitchen and up the stairs, the coffee already forgotten.

Phil woke to find himself alone in Sam’s huge, floral print, king-sized bed. As the events of the previous night came flooding back to him, he couldn’t help a little grin, even as he felt worry grip his heart at the fact Sam was nowhere to be seen.

Rubbing his eyes open properly, he called out “Sam?”, as he made his way downstairs.

His only answer was silence as he walked into Sam’s spotless kitchen. The forgotten coffee mugs from last night were laid on the draining board beside the sink, along with a cereal bowl and spoon, where Sam had obviously had her breakfast and washed up before she left.

Moving further into the room, Phil noticed a piece of paper on the table, leant against the fruit bowl. Picking it up, he read Sam’s neat handwriting: -

Morning sleepyhead,
I tried to wake you up but you wouldn’t budge – kept muttering and rolling back over. Guess I must have worn you out :P
Anyway, sorry I had to get up early but I totally forgot about a meeting I have in like, oops, 20 minutes.
Help yourself to whatever you want – breads in the basket, cereal in the top cupboard and milks in the fridge (where else would it be?)
Oops, I’m, gonna be late,
See you later

Love Sam
Xxxxxxxxxx

Phil smiled, thinking about how much he really did love this woman he used to find any excuse to hurt.

Putting the note back on the table, he went to make himself a cup of coffee, before getting ready for work.

Walking back into CID having just finished her meeting with the new superintentdant, Jack and Neil, Sam heard her phone ringing. “DS Nixon”, she answered.

“Miss Nixon, this is Doctor Butler. I was just wondering if you could come into the surgery today?”

“Today?” she asked, unable to keep the shrill tone out of her voice.

“I know it’s short notice, but there’s something I need to discuss with you as soon as possible.”

Sam’s appointment at the surgery a couple of days ago came rushing back to her: the extra tests, the uneasy feeling she had had afterwards. But then she had become so distracted she had completely forgotten the whole thing.

Swallowing a big lump in her throat, she asked, “Is it bad?”

She didn’t like the hesitation on the other end of the phone, before the doctor replied, “I would prefer to talk to you in person if you don’t mind Miss Nixon. I have a free appointment space at 10.30, can you make that?”

“Erm . . “Sam stalled, glancing around the office: it wasn’t exactly bust around the place this morning. “Yeah ok, I’ll be there.”

Putting the phone back down, Sam pushed all her worries to the back of her mind as she went to see if Jack was in his office.

It’s probably just routine, she told herself, although she knew in her heart that something was very wrong.

“Morning Guv”, Phil greeting his DCI on his way into CID a couple of hours later.

“Morning Phil.”

Breezing into CID like he owned the place, Zain came up beside him, “Someone looks very happy with themselves this morning.”

Glancing around the office to find Sam once again nowhere to be seen, he turned back to Zain, ‘Have you seen Sam?”

With a little glint in his eye, Zain smiled, “ahhhh.”

“Ahhhh what?” Phil demanded, although he was feeling far to good to convey any anger in his voice.

“Nothing Serge”, Zain replied, still smiling. “Sam left about half an hour ago. Something about an appointment.”

“With who?”

“Dunno Serge, sorry.”

Phil shrugged, walked over to his desk and began shifting through some of his overdue paperwork, waiting for her to return to him.

Yey! I’m finally updating. I’m really sorry it’s been so long but I’ve just got back off holiday so hopefully I’ll be able to update more often again now.

Seen as it’s been so long since I updated, here’s a little recap of my script so far:

o Stuart and Sam were going out
o Jo masters returned and made Sam admit to really loving Stuart
o Both Jo and Sam’s daughter Abi convinced Sam to tell both Stuart and Phil what was really in her heart
o Sam told Stuart she really loved Phil and he was actually quite nice about it – surprising everyone!
o Went for a routine check up at the doctors
o Admitted to Phil she loved him and he returned that love
o Went to pub for a ‘quiet drink’ only to be joined by the rest of the station
o Phil ended up back at Sam’s and they slept together
o Next morning Sam had to leave for an early morning business meeting at work
o Sam received a phone call from her doctor and left for her appointment before Phil arrived for his own shift

I know I’ve been totally neglecting my script lately but please keep reviewing everyone to let me know if you like it or not – then I can try to make it better!

Thanks, stacy

Sam’s head was spinning as she sat in the back of the taxi which was heading back in the direction of Sun Him PoIice Station. After what she had just learned she was in no fit state to drive herself and the kind woman at reception had offered to call her a cab. Sam was pretty much in a kind of daze and didn’t remember agreeing, thanking the woman or even getting into the taxi but here she was, as if in a dream, watching as all the familiar houses of the Sun Hill area went flying past.

Try as she might she couldn’t get the doctor’s voice out her mind.

Flashback

“Miss Nixon, the X-Ray scan detected a small mass on your lung”, he had told her.

Wide-eyed Sam had managed to squeak out, “Mass?”

“Don’t worry”, he assured her with a smile, “there is no cause for alarm. This is common for women of your age. It could be completely treatable.”

“Could be?” Sam was still in complete shock.

“We won’t know for certain until we conduct more tests. However you come in for regular check ups, you lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle and I’m sure there is nothing to worry about.”

End of flashback

That was about the last thing Sam remembered before sitting here in this little claustrophobic taxi.

Once they arrived at Sun Hill Sam handed the driver some money not bothering about her change as she walked in the front entrance and straight up to CID.

Her posture slumped a little when she noticed Phil was not at his desk or indeed anywhere around the office.

Sam didn’t see Jo until she was right up beside her. “Sam?” she asked, making her Sergeant jump a little.

“Jo hi. Have you seen Phil anywhere?”

“Not for a couple of hours. He went out on a job somewhere I think.”

Zain happened to be walking past at that moment and explained “The DCI asked Phil to follow up a couple of leads on a robbery case. He shouldn’t be too long.”

Sam only nodded, wishing she could just make him appear.

Jo had noticed Sam was acting rather oddly and after thanking Zain pulled Sam along behind her, “Come on.”

10 minutes later Phil strolled into CID with a grin on his face. “Zain, I just got a full confession out of a guy about the robbery. Smithy is downstairs now checking him into custody ready for interview.”

“That’s great Serge. Shall we get it over with?”

“Fine by me.”

“Oh, by the way, before I forget Sam came in before looking for you. When you weren’t here she left”

“Was she ok?”

Zain titled his head slightly. “Now you mention it she did seem a little strange . . . quiet.”

“Do you know where she went?”

“Jo took her off somewhere. They didn’t say. Sorry.”

Phil was a little worried now, knowing that Sam wouldn’t purposely seek him at work unless there was something wrong. Anything work related she could have asked someone else in the office if Phil himself wasn’t around. “Zain? About that interview? Can you wait 10 minutes?”

“Sure, I’m sure I can find something to do around here.”

“Cheers, I’ll be as quick as I can.”
_______________________________________________

It seemed to have taken forever for Jo and Sam to reach the girl’s bathroom downstairs as everyone they met along the way wanted to know how Jo had caught the bad guys in Sheffield. Not wanted to be rude, Jo had tried to evade as many questions as possible, wanting to get Sam alone so she could find out what was wrong.

Finally pushing the door to the bathroom open, Jo checked the place was empty before turning back to Sam who stood silently leaning against the sinks.

“Come on Sam, spill. What’s wrong?”

“I can’t . . . I . . .”

“Did you and Phil have a fight already?”

Sam shook her head, “No Phil’s . . .”

Sam was interrupted by a knock on the door.

Acknowledging who had just walked in, Jo finished her friend’s sentence for her, “Phil’s here.”

Phil, upon noticing Sam’s silent mood walked straight over. “What’s wrong?”

Letting herself be pulled into a hug, Sam burst into tears as Phil held her as her body convulsed with violent sobs.
“I’ll leave you to it”, Jo told them as she walked out.

After several minutes, Phil gently pushed Sam away a little when she showed no signs of moving herself.

“Sam, what is it?”

He received only more sobs by way of answer and so, he pushed her a little further back, so he could crouch a little and force her to look him in the eye. “Sam, I hate seeing you like this. You can tell me you know? Whatever it is.”

She pulled away completely now walking into a cubicle to retrieve some tissues. Phil watched her wipe her eyes and nose, as she walked right past him to lean against one of the sinks.

“I know”, she began slowly. “And I want to tell you I really do but . . .”

“But what?”

The floor suddenly became very interesting as Sam mumbled “I don’t want to lose you.”

“Lose me?”

“There you go I said it”, she almost shouted. “You happy now?”

“Happy? What? Sam I have to tell you, I love you but right now? You’re not making much sense to me.”

“You do? Really?”

“What?”

“Love me?”

Phil walked closer to her, putting his arm around her waist. “Of course I do silly. What? You think I hung of your every word for the last 3 years because I hated you?” Cupping her chin with his hand he once again forced her to look up at him. “Sam, I love you more than anything in the world.”

She wriggled out of his embrace, shouting, “Don’t.”

Phil frowned, “Ok, again with the crazy talk. Will you please just tell me what’s going on?”

Sam was ready for exploding now. “I’ve got cancer ok?”

At Phil’s apparent inability to speak she carried on. “My important meeting this morning finished with a phone call from my doctor, I have a mass on my lung.”

“And it’s definitely cancer?” Phil forced the words out through the ball which had formed in his throat.

“Well it’s hardly a broken finger is it? Cancer is cancer Phil.”

“But the doctor never said cancer?”

Sam let out a loud sigh. “Phil, you wanted to know. If you can’t handle it . . .”

“Sam, shhh a minute”, Phil interrupted her ranting. “What exactly did he say? Is it treatable?”

“I have to go back for tests tomorrow. Don’t see the point myself but . . .”

“Hey!” Phil interrupted her yet again. Walking over to her he grabbed both her arms and told her. “Listen to me Sam. You are the strongest person I know and we are not going to let this beat you ok?”

Sam just stood looking up at him.

“We’ll go in tomorrow for your tests and then we’ll take it from there right?”

Sam nodded, collapsing into Phil’s arms. “You’ll come with me?” she asked. “You know you don’t have to. I would understand if you . . .”

“Stop right there. I am not going anywhere Sam, whether you like it or not. I only just got you back and I am not about to let you go without a fight ok?”

Sam smiled. Phil could do that. He had the ability to make her laugh no matter what the situation. “You know?” she told him. “You keep interrupting me. It’s cute to finish off each others sentences but this is ridiculous.”

Phil felt so relieved when he saw her smile. She’s so beautiful, she doesn’t deserve this. “I’ll make you a deal. You stop with all the crazy talk and I’ll let you finish a sentence every now and again?”

“Only every now and again?”
“Well we wouldn’t wanna lose that cute factor now would we?”

“Miss Nixon”, Phil told the young lady who was sat behind the reception desk at doctor’s surgery the next morning. “We have an appointment with Doctor Barnes at 10 o’clock.”

After typing in a few keys on her keyboard, she looked up and gave a polite smile telling them, “If you would like to take a seat, Doctor Barnes will see you soon.”

Placing an arm around Sam’s waist, Phil guided her towards the waiting area after thanking the receptionist for her help. Sam had hardly said a word all morning.

That’s understandable, he thought, I don’t know how she’s holding it all together as well as she is.

“So . . .” Phil had been about to ask how Sam was really holding up but never got the chance, as a young man popped his head around the far door and called Sam’s name.

Sam still seemed a little dazed and Phil had to jolt her out of her thoughts and gesture the direction in which the doctor had now disappeared again.

“Morning, Miss Nixon”, he said with a smile.

Oh God, it’s bad, Sam panicked immediately. He’s trying to break it to me gently so he doesn’t have yet another hysterical patient on his hands. Oh my God Phil. She turned to look Phil in the eye and could tell by the fear and worry she saw there that he thought the same.

Obviously noticing her hesitation, the doctor quickly moved on. “Yes well, I imagine you don’t want to waste time on pleasantries. I have your results here.” He seemed to ponder them for a moment. To Sam it felt lie an eternity.

“Doctor?” Phil asked.

“Yes, well it seems the mass on your wife’s lung is removable with a simple surgical procedure.”

Phil couldn’t believe his ears. “Removable? As in, cured?”

Sam had noticed the mistake on the doctor’s part, thinking she and Phil were married but she was now distracted by what Phil was saying. She thought she had hard the doctor wrong, but the excitement in Phil’s voice agreed with her.

“Yes. Once the surgery is over. Miss Nixon will have to come in for a check up every 6 months for 3 years to make sure the cancer is still in remission. However, that is just procedure and judging from these test results, I see no reason why a successful operation would not be the end of this.”

“What?” Sam didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “I’m not going to die?”

“Not just yet Miss Nixon, no.”

Sam felt tears come now; tears of fear she had been holding in, and tears of relief as she hugged Phil and kept holding him like she would never let go.

“Come on, I’m taking you out for dinner. To celebrate”, Phil told Sam as they got in Phil’s car outside the surgery.

Sitting in he passenger seat she replied. “Phil, we can’t, what about work?”

“Work can wait. You’re more important”, he told her, lifting his hand to cup her cheek.

Unable to resist a smile Sam told him, “That’s sweet Phil. Really it is, but I’ll be taking enough time off for this operation.”

“If it’s what you need, then that’s what you’ll have.”

“Yeah, I know, it’s just . . .”

“Just nothing Mrs. Just do as you’re told for once, ok? Do you think you can manage that?”

Sam smiled. Phil calling her Mrs had reminded her of the doctor’s mistake. “Hey, did you hear when the doctor called me your wife?”

Phil nodded. “I too busy worrying about you though, to correct his mistake.”

Sam took his hand and began to play with his fingers. “Why does it have to be a mistake?”

“’Scuse me?” Phil was confused.

“Phil, all morning the only thing I could think about was dying and . . .”

“Sam?”

“No Phil, let me finish. All I could think about was dying and . . . and leaving you behind.”

“You’re not going anywhere.”

“That’s what I mean. I don’t want to go anywhere . . . ever . . . that’s not with you.”

“You think we should get married?”

“Don’t you want to?”

“Of course I do. Are you mad? I just never thought you’d say yes.”

“Ask me.”

“You serious?”

Sam only smiled.

Taking her hand in his own, Phil looked her in the eye and asked, “Miss Samantha Nixon, would you do me the great honour of becoming my wife?”

Sam pretended to consider. “Well, I’ll have to think about it.”

“O yeah?”

“Yeah. It’s a huge decision.”

“Come here”, Phil leant over starting poking her in all the places she was ticklish., making her squirm and wriggle.

After a few seconds Sam gave up. “Ok, ok, ok, I will, yes Phil, the answers yes.”

Phil gave up tickling her and pulled her into a long, passionate kiss. “Good answer.”
