Low
Have you ever had a friend that let you down.
Sharon Rickman stood in her high heels and widow black shocked to the bones, as the events leading up to the shattering of her life were revealed for all to hear. Words pounded her ears and memories swam through her mind. She could see him smiling, grinning at her as she told him the news they’d never thought they’d hear. Now there she was, her eyes scanned the room and locked with the only man she’d trusted. The only friend she’d trusted to get the justice Dennis deserved and he’d betrayed her. Let her down completely in the only thing she’d asked of him.
Were you left in the cold. Cus what you did was low.
Phil Mitchell stood transfixed by her swimming green eyes. The only woman he’d loved more than anything was listening to the events he’d made happen. To get revenge and had cost her more that he could ever repay.
‘Phil Mitchell’
His eyes darted to the sliver tape recorder that stood in full view on the bar of the Queen Victoria. It was equal distance between them, half way between him and Sharon. Now he knew the effects revenge could wreak on a world, on a human life. He’d never felt so low, so dishonest, so undone by the loo in her eyes and the way she lent heavily on the bar for support.
Everybody’s talking but they don’t say a thing. They look at me with sad eyes but I don’t want their sympathy.
Sharon turned her gaze and head away from the tape recorder and the devastated man who’d betrayed her. She made her feet take a step away. A step towards the exit when a smiling brunette opened the doors in which she’d hope to escape.
‘Oh Sharon I’m sorry but he wants his mummy’
Sharon took her son in her arms and rocked him gently. ‘There now mummy’s here’ here was her reason, here was her light, her joy. The only person she needed, her husband’s son.
‘Sharon I’m sorry’
Sharon held her son closer and looked over the familiar faces of the pub, the pity evident in there eyes. ‘how could you Phil. How could you’
It’s cool you don’t want me, sometimes you can’t go back.
Phil stepped towards Sharon and she took a deliberate step back. He knew the sign for what it was, keep away, I don’t you near me. And how he thought could her blame her. ‘it wasn’t meant to be like this’
‘all this time… all this time I thought you were helping, grieving with me’
‘it wasn’t-‘
‘you betrayed me Phil. How could I have EVER trusted you’
and with those words slung at him he knew it was over. Everything was over and he hoped he hadn’t destroyed her all ready devastated world.
There’s nothing left to say except I never thought I’d hurt this much to be saved.
The shock had numbed her. But now holding her son in her arms, facing a man she’d trusted and had, had a part in the ending of a life. Had all but killed her Dennis, Sharon began to feel.
‘come on now Sharon’
Sharon turned her head to face Peggy silent tears falling from her eyes down her cheeks. ‘He was the only person I trusted. I needed justice for OUR son, mine and Dennis’s’
Peggy nodded ‘I know sweetheart’
Sharon looked at her as emotions ran through her mind and fresh grief and betrayal tore at her heart.
When the truth came out were you the last to know.
Phil stared around the stunned, shocked and silent resident’s of Albert Square. He knew this had been it. He felt like he was the last to know. Sharon had known when Johnny had sent her the tape. When she’d listened to it in their first home, alone. He hadn’t known, had even thought it possible and Sharon had found out. He turned and walked through the doors and out into the square at dusk. The sun was setting but it wasn’t beautiful, he felt nothing.
I walk out of this darkness with no regret.
Sharon laid her son in this car seat, buckling him in safely. He had his father’s hair, eyes and temper. Kyle Dennis Rickman was 8 months and 23 days old. He’d been born in hospital on the 21st June 2006 at 5.30am a healthy 6lb 9oz. It had been the beginning of her life, she saw the miracle that was hers and Dennis’s child welcomed into the world. She looked around the darkened light of the square of where she’d grown up and had some very happy moments was cast in to darkness. Her heart was light with love for her son and justice for her Dennis but heavy with the betrayal of a friend. But she could look back on her time here and feel no regrets, she was going back to America free.
And I go with a clear conscience.
Phil stood and watched his son sleeping safely. It would probably be the last time he would do so in the new bed they’d brought together on a father son day out. He stepped back out of the room and picked up the small hold all perched by the stairs and made his way down. He needed to get away from the memories and awkward silences. Ben would understand, he needed to clear his head and let the tensions die down. His conscience wasn’t clear but at least he felt the guilt he’d been carrying around lift off his shoulders.
Here’s to show for all the time I loved you so…
Sharon set Kyle’s car seat beside her and knelt down in front of her husband’s grave. Her fingers reached out to tough the word carved in the granite.
‘DENNIS RICKMAN’
She took the flowers from Kyle’s seat and placed the two red roses on the greening February earth. ‘There from both of us’ she whispered.
Her on stirred in sleep to smile at her as if he understood. She stroked his delicate rosy cheek and his eyes fluttered close. A solitary tear slipped down her cheek as she thought of all the time her and Dennis had had together. The good happy times and the not so good and not so happy, but she’d always have the memories and when her son was old enough she’d share them with him too.
Have you ever been so low. Have you ever had a friend let you down so. When the truth came out were you the last to know. Were you left out in the cold. Cus what you did was low.
