View Full Version : Religion or shopping?
Which is more important:religion or shopping?
The church of England has vowed to keep sunday special as britains shops gear up for there best easter ever.
Retailers are expecting record takings over the holiday weekend but church leaders have vowed to fight the spread of consumer culture.
The church has pledged to resist any changes to trading laws which would allow shops to open on easter sunday.
shopping for me! religion needs a good shake up and ive ot better things to do on a sunday morning than to sit and listen to a load of rubbish that needs to be changed with the times
Shopping all the way religion is the cause of many wars and the deaths of many innocent lives

Shops are shut for 2 days a year it's not exactly gunna hrt people. To see people yesterday you would have thought the shops were never going to open again. My goodness surely folk can manage to give the shops a miss for one day. Spare a thought what Easter is really supposed to be about.

i agree with you dawn. shopping is more important to me cos im not religious at all, however many other people in this country are religious and seeing as we live in a christian country, i think the shops should be closed on easter sunday as well as christmas day. if people suggested opening shops on xmas day i bet most people would be against the idea, not necessarily cos they are christians, but cos they actually properly celebrate xmas and would never dream of going shopping on xmas day. for christians, easter is more important than christmas (someone told me that once) but for non-religious people christmas is more important. im sure people can cope with not going shopping 2 days of the year, im sure its not a necessity that you have to go on easter sunday
Shopping, no contest! The only time I go to church is for funerals or the christmas service with the school.

Got peed off this morning afer driving all over Bath to get stuff for hub's barbeque (which he decided he was having at 6.30 this morning) The only shop open was the poxy Somerfield down the road which is staffed by sausage rolls.
I don't have a problem with the shops being closed over Easter and Christmas. It's not hard to plan in advance to make sure you have everything you need and it is only a day or two at most.
Religion wins everytime for me. You can shop almost at will these days (24/7 with the net) and that is precisely what retailers want you to do - line their greedy fat pockets with more money.
The religion/war excuse doesn't wash with me. How about Oil and War as an example.
Even if you are atheist, surely a day where you can spend time with the family and reflect is worth more than a shopping day out.

I suppose people want to shop more on easter and christmas because everything comes down in price.
I voted religion, I am not a church goer myself, but think it doesnt hurt for the shops to close today, only my local shops are open, I think we a little lazy now days, and have got use to shopping when ever we like, what happened to just planning ahead. I remember a time when the shops closed for half a day on a thursday and wasn't allowed to open on sundays. we managed very well with that, and at that time, the freezer wasn't in most normal homes,

Religion wins hands down with me,, any one can shop..at any old time,My great grand ma from Wales used to have a cross stitch sampler on her wall,, it said MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL,, like NB said shop keepers are greedy and just wanna line their pockets with our hard earned money.. THIS IS MY 5 EURO CENTS WORTH :searchme:
Religion had nothing to do with the war in Iraq. Its all about oil :)
Iraq's not the only war ever to have happened though is it what about all the trouble in Israel and Palistien
WW 1, WW 2, The Korean War, Vietnam were not because of religion
Religion really, shopping is basically just choosing something and buying it. Religion is something much more important to me
Shopping's important to me, but so is my religion. I'm not a church goer, but I still find religion important. I think the problem is that religion doesn't appeal to people. I'm not going to try and speak for all young people, but a lot nowadays, including me, don't want to spend a Sunday morning at church. Religion is starting to lose touch a bit. I'm Roman catholic right, but I don't agree with a lot of religion's views e.g. No contraceptives. I think they need to start thinking about how they are going to bring people into the church.
There is a song by Shania Twain (Ka-Ching!) and some of the lyrics are: Our religion is to go and blow it all
So it's shoppin' every Sunday at the mall and I think that's what a lot of people do now. Sunday used to be a day of rest and a day for God. Now it's just become another day for shopping. That's really sad, that people put shopping before religion. I feel that there's no big reason for me to go to church, I'd prefer to do a bit of shopping, but on Easter Sunday. It's a special day, and I wouldn't feel right going off and shopping when it's easter. We don't seem to focus on Easter very much anymore. We don't really honour it that much, we just celebrate, because it's there. I'm sure a lot of people would prefer to shop than celebrate it. We don't find it that important anymore. That's quite sad.
Sorry went off on one a bit

religion for me. there are too many shopping days as it is, i love shopping but it wouldnt hurt for the shops to be shut every now and again, there are other things to do and it would encourage more family times.
aint religious so i would say shopping but here on the western isles sundays are very boring, people are at church which means us non religious people suffer cause there is no buses or shops open but that should change over the coming years
