Its really funny, people think sign language is UNIVERSAL,, when I tell them it isn't.. they are like HOW COME ?? My come back is, How come you do not speak Italian in Africa?? American Sign language ABC's involve just one hand,, British Sign Language ABC's involve both hands,, its a really neat experince for me to observe, BSL and DSL.. I am learning loads of BSL from TV.. so I hope whenever i meet a deaf person from the Uk i will be able to communicate with them as well :cheer:
wow, thats so so cool i never knew there were so many different sign languages, but then gain it makes sense when you think about it

I have got to say that before i started learning BSL i was unaware that sign language was not universal, which was a shock to me. I have been doing my course for 8 weeks not another 12 to go and so far I can sign my name, were i live, what family I have, I also know how to sign different ways of transport, the weather, numbers days of the week and the four seaons.

That is great! I can do ABC using BSL and ISL - one hand too. IPeople think sign language is hard but nah! its quite cool as no one know what we are talking about. for example i can sign idiot or ******* you to my bro and he would have no idea what i said unless i used my voice hehe

So Becks did you get your education in a deaf school with other deaf kids or mainstreamed with a few deaf kids in a special program ???

Oh hiya, sorry about taking ages to reply, as I was giving my bedroom a makeover this weekend. First I went to hearing school with a deaf unit from aged about 4-11 years old, mixing with hearing people at breaktime/lunchtime then went to a special school for the deaf and blind at aged 12-17. Loved mainstream school than special school.

Im not deaf but I know a little bit of sign langauge :)
4 of my cousins in Newcastle are deaf, and one of my aunts as well. They all are deaf completly in one ear, and around 75% deaf in the other. So they lip read everyone al the time, even they dont know that much sign language.
Anyway, i've picked up a few little bits, but nothing much, cause i only go to Newcastle once a year or so.

Some peeps spelt Death when they meant to spell Deaf, lol
I am not deaf and don't know anything in sign language. They had a page on it in the student organisers last year, and I can't remember one letter in it. I admire those that are deaf for the way they cope with having to use it.

I can't sign proper words or anything, but I can however spell my name with it, and a few other words ( I don't remember all the letters lol ) I'd love to learn to sign though.

Recently, I got an award of Adult of Achievement just coz of my deafness. My college put my name down for it as I was the only fulltime deaf student and thought that I was amazing for coping in the college with all these hearing peeps around me but I don't get it! After all, I am used to cope in 'Hearing World' and have to cope with it and there are a lot of peeps worse off than me but they don't get an award and I do just coz Im deaf so I think that is amazing well my college are not really awared of Deaf Awareness but they are starting to... I find it funny if hearing peeps admire or woship deaf peeps...no offence people

I finished my deaf awareness course today. It was 20 weeks long and by god it opened my eyes. Although the course was only and introductory level, the course was very intense and it really gives you an insight into how those of us with all five senses working do take things for granted.

Oh god right over the 20 weeks I feel as I have learnt a lot although its only an introductory leve. We had to do four assessments. The first three assessments were videoed where we had to have a conversation. As this had to be sent away for external verification that we had passed the assessments
1st Assessment: About our work, family, pets, where we live and how we travel to work.
2nd Assessment: We had to act out a scene where we were buying a train ticket. We had to be able to sign where we wanted to go, the time and how much the price would be.
3rd Assessment: This was similar to the 2nd assessment except this involved being in a cafe ordering food and drink.
4th Assessment: We had to watch a video where the deaf tutor was signing three different scenirios on her family, a night out and her work. She signed questions to us and we had to write down the answers
