Comedy The Royle Family is to return to the BBC for a one-off special.
Co-creator and star Caroline Aherne is currently working on the script for the show, which is likely to feature the original members of the cast.

Aherne, who announced her retirement from television in 2001, is expected to reprise her role as Denise.

The comedy, largely set in the living room of the Manchester family, began on BBC Two in 1998 and was last seen on BBC One on Christmas Day 2000.

Aherne's writing partner Craig Cash, who plays Denise's husband Dave, is also involved on the development of the script.

The show has been commissioned by the BBC and is being made by ITV Productions at Granada studios in Manchester, where the previous three series and two specials were filmed.

The special is scheduled to air on BBC One later this year.

Ordinary conversation

Andy Harries, ITV's controller of drama and comedy said: "We've been talking to Caroline a lot and we knew that she was thinking about doing it.

Jim Royle (Ricky Tomlinson) spends much of the show in his armchair

"She had started writing it. She'd thought about it but decided not to do it, then she changed her mind. She just had an idea for it and she thought it would work really well," he added.

"The show won't have moved on that much. They'll be talking about different TV programmes," said Mr Harries.

He added that actor Ricky Tomlinson, who played Jim Royle, was keen to make a new episode, and said "I'm coming down right now" when told of the plans.

Other principal members of the cast include Sue Johnston, Ralf Little and Jessica Stevenson.

The award-winning comedy was based around the Royles perpetually watching the television in their front room and exchanging ordinary conversation.

Long pauses and static shots were among the trademarks of the show, which was elevated to BBC One for the second series.

From Today's (The Sun) 25.10.06

THE Royle Family returns this week after six years — and after a sneak preview TV Biz reveals it was worth the wait.

The BBC was trying to keep the plot of the one-off episode by creator Caroline Aherne top-secret.

But could they keep it secret from TV Biz? Could they, my a**e!

The show opens with Jim Royle larking about on a Stannah stairlift. And it never goes downhill from there.

There are some changes since we last saw the telly-mad family in 2000.

Denise (Aherne) is pregnant with child No 2. Baby David is now Little David — and played by Harry Cash, real-life son of Craig Cash, who plays his screen dad. Anthony (Ralf Little) is a businessman in a sharp suit and Jim (Ricky Tomlinson) appears to have WASHED his crusty old T-shirt.

Amazingly, the chain-smoking bunch seem to have quit the cigs, although that’s not mentioned. We won’t give away the plot, but it’s not all tears of laughter — there is the right amount of pathos to make it emotional too

Liz Smith steals the show as Nana. Her description of her pal’s posh a la carte dinner is brilliant: “She had soup of the day, which was Friday.”

It’s best not to mess with a winning formula, and Aherne sticks to hers. The boys laying laminate flooring to the Jungle Book tune is nearly as good as the Jim Royle’s classic decorating to Mambo Number 5.

We have a few gripes — Denise saying “babes” a lot and Tomlinson being too over-the-top. But all this is just minor.

By the end of the hour-long show, you’ll have been on an emotional rollercoaster watching the return of one of the best British TV comedies ever.

Welcome back — we missed you.

Catch the show on BBC1 at 9pm this Sunday.

I am in tears already, tears of sadness and joy :crying: :crying: :crying:

Katy
30-10-2006, 15:05
it was brillant and got something like 7.8 million viewers acording to the evening news. It was really funny but then awfully sad when we had to say bye to nana. There were some cracking quotes.

Barbara and denise

"Did you have a nice tea"
"yeah"
"what did you have"
"well i made david turkey twizzlers and chips"
"aww thats nice"

Silence

"what did big dave have for his tea"
"turkey twizzlers and chips"

I thought the scene between barbara and nana was so nice when they were singing and she said i hope im not a burden bar. I was nearly crying at that part it was really well acted as well. The babys name as well, what was she called Norma, something tallulah, porsce Best.

I just bawled,,,what a touching scene between Barbara and Nana ( reminds me of my mom who is 85 and I had the hardest time leaving her this past Sept ) and had to admit Denise did well in this episode,,I am so glad they brought the baby out for Nana to see,, "I have been waiting to see you little one " and naming the baby Norma, just got me in tears,,
Jim and Nana doing the conga was a hoot,, wasn't the music Johnny Cash ???
Little Dave oh dear what a kid,, a spittin image of Big Dave..

Ok can some one tell me how Cheryl is related to the Royle family??? Since I only watched some of the episodes...

what an amazing episode, truely a superb comedy - you can stick Only Fools And Horses, this has to be the nations best loved sit com.

I dont know whats sadder, nana dying or saying goodbye to the royale family one more time :(

I really enjoyed it but must admit there were some bad parts. Especially didn't like the bit with Jim going on about the batteries for the remote. How OTT was that scene.

Although saying that, most of it was still great. Nana - 'He's a pakistani... but he's very open about it' :rotfl: And then there was her hair extensions lmfao! :D It was really sad when she died though :( They made it so emotional I thought especially with the scenes with her and Barbara singing, it was really well done. Also when they were all stood round her bedside at the hospital. :( And then when Jim placed the ashes on top of the tv, aww. :) Nana was definitely the highlight of the episode.

Couldn't believe how much Anthony's character had changed, was really shocked. The way he'd gone from a layabout to a businessman! lol

Overall a really good episode and i'm glad it got good ratings. I enjoyed the behind the scenes program afterwards too. It'd be nice to see another series but if they don't make one then I still think it was a good episode to end the show on. :)

well i was disappointed in the episode.
i was expecting a funny one off episode not to end up in tears.
the show was basically a build up to nana's death and i dont normally cry at comedies.

It also goes to show there will never be any more series because nana was one of the main characters and now shes dead

I bawled like a baby. Nana was always my fave character, but somehow Jim seemed out of character.

Sue Johnston has confirmed that another special of The Royle Family will air this Christmas.

Speaking to The Sun, the actress - who plays Barbara - said that the planned episode is "definitely happening this year".

Co-creator Craig Cash assured Digital Spy last summer that a festive episode would air in 2011.

However, it later emerged that he and co-writer Caroline Aherne had run out of time finishing the feature-length edition, which would probably have aired in its traditional 9pm slot on Christmas Day.

Absolutely Fabulous became BBC One's Christmas Day offering instead, marking its 20th anniversary.

The Royle Family's 2010 special - 'Joe's Crackers' - pulled in an audience of 9.9 million. Before that, 2009's special had 10.2m, while 2008's logged 10m.

The BAFTA Award-winning sitcom also stars Ricky Tomlinson as Jim, Ralf Little as Antony, Cash as Dave and Aherne as Denise.
