Eminem has filed for divorce less than three months after remarrying his high school sweetheart Kimberley Mathers.
The filing on behalf of Marshall Bruce Mathers III, Eminem's real name, was confirmed by two employees of the Macomb County clerk's office. They did not provide their names, citing an office policy.
The rapper, 33, remarried Mathers, 30, on January 14 after weeks of speculation.
Their first marriage ended after only three years in October 2001 in an ugly legal fight that included a custody battle over their daughter, Hailie.
Eminem was required to share custody of Hailie and pay $US1000 a week in child support, reports at the time said.
Eminem has infamously sung about murdering his "daughter's momma", and on his belly he once had a picture of his wife on a tombstone inscribed with "Rot in Pieces", which he reportedly had inked after an argument with her.
"I have a complicated relationship with [my wife],'' he told the Herald in early 2003.
"We fight a lot, but she's the mother of my daughter and I respect that.
"I've done some things I regret - I'm not perfect and I can be hot-headed at times."
The couple were married in 1999 but the relationship turned sour when he caught her kissing another man outside a Detroit nightclub.
He pulled out a gun, hit the man and was arrested by police.
He was given two years' probation and fined $190,000.
The couple divorced soon after. She took up with another man and they had a daughter, Whitney, in April 2002.
Eminem went wild, drinking, taking drugs and playing the born-again bachelor with Mariah Carey, among others.
By mid-2002 Mathers had moved back into Eminem's home, bringing Hailie and Whitney with her, and the relationship seemed to find some balance.
People magazine celebrated him as an ideal joint-custody father and a model neighbour, who attended community meetings in his gated community in the Detroit suburbs.
The pair grew up in the suburbs along Eight Mile Road, Detroit's northern border.
