i was going to start a thread on this a while ago when we were discussing positive discrimination to do with ethnic minorities, then yesterday we were doing something at school about positive discrimination for women which reminded me to start this thread. so i just wondered what everyones views were on positive discrimination
I think positive discrimination is disgusting and devisive legislation. People should be picked purely on merit and ability

but surely choosing someone purely becasue of ability and merit is just another kind of discrimination
but surely choosing someone purely becasue of ability and merit is just another kind of discriminationHow is it???? People should always be picked because of their ability not because of their gender, sexual orientation or race/colour

The council over here doesn't belive in hiring people with degrees. Apparently its discriminatory to do so. Left wing policies gone mad.

I hate PD as well. Sadly even the Tories have done this with their selection of more female candidates. Whatever happened to the concept of merit and ability? :thumbsdow

Whatever happened to the concept of merit and ability? :thumbsdowIt has been ruled as illegal by the DEAR LEADER and comrade CHERIE. If I was you I would prepare for an early morning call from the thought police and two years in a Gulag :nono:
For a long time I was all for gender equality at work. When this pensions fiasco came about I thought about the next generation and then realised because of gender equality there wasn't going to be a next generation!
This is an ancedotal example, but looking at all my female friends from uni not one is yet married or has any kids. Why? Because they've all got huge mortgages to pay, are trying to get up the corporate ladder, and by the time they think 'kids!' its going to be the menopause.
I would actually like to see more incentives for women to raise families as well as oppotunities at work. Unfortunately the two don't always go hand-in-hand.

before i voice my opinons I dont want everyone to jump down my throat but as a single parent and female i would like to think that i acheieve a job through my qualifications and merits not because someone hired me due to my gender or circumstances. But i work in education and i know that in goverment organisations and educational establishments they are given extra funding and resources for employing people with disabilities although they may not be competent enough to do the job.
Personally I disagree I tink that if someone is being paid a salary to do a job they should be fully competent to do that job regardless of their colour, gender or race

its like say theres a job going and you give it to a coloured person or a female instead of the person who is best suited for the job (im not very good at explaining things)

no. people should be judged purely on their merit and abilities and nothing else.

ok then. I think that sometimes postitive discrimination is a good thing. In sports men and women arnt the same and cant compete the same so its good. But then again other times its bad

So if there is a swimming teacher vacancy for little kids where they have to be in the same chanmging room. if all the kids are female. surely it woul;d be better to give the job to a woman?

but hows that positively discriminating? i thought that was against the law, turning people down because of their age? in business studies my teacher said an employer couldnt say they were looking for an older person/younger person, even though when i tried to get a job in a local shop the person behind the till looked at me and said they were looking for someone older, if everywheres looking for someone older, how the hell are we supposed to get part time jobs?
