i thought you only had to pay if you were over 16?Thats my understanding too Vikki - as far as I knew, anyone under 16 receive free dental treatment. What changes are we talking about here???

Luna

the current changes are that if you need "train tracks" as they call them here everyone will have to pay to get them even the under 16's or atleast a portion of the amount

Cos Ste may need them in 18 months time, but can't have them yet, cos his old dentist removed too many teeth of his ( ) and the adult ones haven't grown back yet.. Would this mean we would have to pay for them....?

So even NHS ones will need to be paid for by the patient?! What about people who can't afford that much money? Are they meant to have wonky teeth untill they CAN afford it?!

I mean, come on, if people could afford to pay for them, then they would have opted to go private in the first place.

Tori

okay, its lucky i've already had mine, but my sister will need them so its not looking good! this seems stupid becuase then people will opt out. mind you i suppose it will cut out those who don;t want them in the first place, and won't wear retainers when they are done

Exactly!! The government should get its priorities right, and stop spending ridicualous amounts of money on flash monuments etc, and avctually use it on the patients, to stop costs like this being brought in. You tax payers have already paid for treatment like this- you shouldn't have to suppliment the costs in things like this.

no she has all three braces on at the same time. difficult to explain but it does work ok! she will have them for 18 to 24mths.

Further to the charges for braces. I understand that the charge depends on need, e.g. if you have slightly squint teeth then the NHS will not pay, but if there is a major problem they will still get treatment

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1370783.stm

This link is quite old, but I heard it again last year not long before my youngest got a full set of train track braces - but he had no problem.

My eldest son got his braces off just before christmas - he has perfect teeth now - a hollywood smile almost!

The qoutes below are current:

NHS Treatments
NHS orthodontic treatment is available for children under 16 years of age with moderately severe problems who need braces for dental health reasons from very crowded teeth and teeth that stick out to cross-bites and deep bites.

Acceptance for NHS Treatment
The decision concerning a patient's eligibility for NHS treatment is based on the clinical need for treatment to secure dental health when they are ready to have their braces fitted. An NHS assessment and subsequent review appointments do not guarantee that NHS treatment will be offered.

The aim of NHS treatment is to achieve a vast improvement in the appearance of the teeth and a healthy dentition. Perfect alignment of the teeth is not always possible.

Restrictions to NHS Treatment
Children who have mild irregularities of their teeth may not be accepted for NHS care because there are no dental health benefits from having treatment. The major benefit of treatment in these cases is cosmetic, therefore private treatment is the only option if you want to have a more perfect smile.

I went to the orthodontist in November last year and I qualify for NHS treatment. But because I was only just 17 (a couple of weeks after my bday) and the waiting list is 2 years long, by the time I reach my 18th birthday this year I will be taken off the list automatically. They didn't even bother to put me on the list in the hope that I might be seen by this November. They did, however, give me a run through of the private costs and procedures. Perhaps if they cut their private-only hours down people would be seen quicker and the waiting list shortened.

Dental appliances in my area are free for people up to the age of 18 who are in full time education (not apprenticeships, as far as I'm aware). There are strict guidelines for qualification for NHS appliances. Teeth are measure in hundreths of a mm and if you are just a few hundreths over the threshhold you don't get NHS treatment.

The cost at the centre that I went to is £2000 for the basic "package". That includes all appliances, consultations, xrays, everything, except the retainer to be used when the fixed braces come off. They pointed out to me that some people have to wear a retainer for the rest of their lives to keep their teeth in the same position.

This all seems wrong to me. If you're put on the waiting list under the age of 18 you should still get NHS treatment when your name comes to the top of the list, regardless of how old you are then.

abigail at the orphadontist my sister goes to if you are refered before the age limit that they pay then the NHS pay for the treatment

and im not allowed mine on the NHS as mine arent bad enough with the measurments but there wonky i can feel them on the top they are and its easy to see a wonky teeth on the bottom ones, and we got told about the private costs aswell and we got told £2000 but that was for the clear braces, looks like i need to save lol

That's what my own dentist told me but the orthodontist said it was wrong and they won't fund any treatment for over-18's.

I'm entitled to NHS treatment. My front two teeth are going inwards at the bottom and catch on my bottom teeth. I had removable braces about 5 years ago but the dentist did a bad job and they just look worse now. I went from overcrowding at the top to having gaps around the front. The brace itself made a propper mess of my mouth, I was forever getting ulcers and cuts around the back of my teeth on my gums.

So yeah, I'm pretty peeved that I could have had fixed braces 5 years ago but it was cheeper to have removable one. We can't afford £2000 for dental treatment at the moment so it looks like I'm stuck with what I've got until I get a windfall.

aww thats well unfair considering you could have had the braces 5 years ago, all orphadontist people care about is saving money and the one my sister goes to dont even fix them right hers has broke 3 times in a week and a half because he didnt glue it right she swallowed a plastic tube lol
and mum said she dont have the money either or she would pay for me to get them done but i hate my teeth anyway and one is chipped

she has the 2 fixed braces but because her bite is all wrong she has to wear the romoveable brace with a plate to stop her teeth biting into her braces, she will have this till her bite straightens up.

Lucky you :o

I've had a special brace thing for 2 years on the top to pull down the canine teeth and turn them around, and a month ago traintracks put on the bottom ones just to straighten them out.

My treatment has been free, which is lucky because I go to a specialist orthodontist unit in a hospital (oo lucky me  ) but I have heard that it's changing.

Can I ask what you mean by turn them around?

StarsOfCCTV
29-08-2007, 21:52
Yeah, they were growing diagonally so they were in danger of knocking out my front teeth, so they did an operation under general and attatched small chains to the teeth and then over a pulled them down over a year or so and because they grew in the wrong direction they came down sideways. And they used a thicker wire than normal in the metal square things, to turn them round...I think..well ones turned round the others halfway there :)

Very complicated :p
