Ok, this is an alternative ending to last Wednesdays episode (Episode 391) – an ending which I think is much more appropriate, especially for all you sam and phil fans!

I hope you all like it, and please tell me what you think!

Phil knocks back another drink, as Sam walks over to where Terry and Ramani are sat.

“I think we’re gonna have to keep an eye on Phil”, she tells them, taking a seat next to Terry.

“Why’s that?” Terry asks.

“He’s on a mission to get absolutely slaughtered”, she replies, frowning concerned, as she watches him knock back yet another drink.

Terry and Ramani just smile, seeing nothing but the usual Phillip Hunter, king to the ladies and master of drink.

But Sam knew better, she knew all about Cindy and Alfie and even Kate. She knew how much pain he had had to endure over the last couple of months and she had a sinking feeling that Phil was more cut up about Cindy’s leaving than he was admitting, even to himself.

I’ll keep my eye on you Phil, she made a silent promise to him, I’ll make sure you’re ok tonight.

(A couple of hours later . . . )

Most of the relief had left the pub much earlier, with the younger members of uniform aiming to hit some club around the corner. While, the more mature members of CID has been invited, they had politely declined, upon deciding it wasn’t really their scene.

“Well, that’s me”, Terry announced a short while afterwards, getting to his feet.

“Me too”, Ramani said, “I’ve got an early start in the morning. She looked to Terry, “Do you want to share a taxi?”

“Sure”, he replied.

Ramani turned to Sam, “You coming Sam?”

Sam looked over to the bar where Phil had returned, after his brother and his mates had left for the club. “No thanks guys, I’m gonna wait with Phil and make sure he gets home ok.”

Ramani followed her gaze, “Yeah, he has had a lot to drink tonight, You’re sure you’ll be ok?”

“Course I will, I’ll see you both tomorrow ok?”

“Ok, see you then,”

They made their way to the entrance, shouting goodbye to Phil as they left.

He raised his arm as way of acknowledgement, before catching the bartender’s attention, and ordering himself another drink.

Sam approached from behind, and on taking a seat on the bar stool next to Phil’s, asked him, “Haven’t you had enough for one night Phil?”

“Nope”, he replied, without even looking at her.

“Come on Phil”,. She tried again, “I’ll call you a cab”.

“Thanks DS Nixon, but I am quite capable of calling myself a cab when and if I want one ok?”

He made to order another drink.

“Phil, stop it”, she told him, “What’s gotten into you?”

“There’s nothing wrong with me”, he told her, “You’re the one with the problem. Why can’t you just leave me alone? Go on home to your perfect little life, go on.”

“Is that what you think?” she asked him. ”That my life is perfect?”

“Well, isn’t it?”

“Are you kidding me?” she challenged, truly stunned by his implications, “Whatever Phil, I was just trying to help you”. She jumped down off the bar stool and turned to leave. “And just for the record, my life happens to, on occasion, suck beyond the telling of it and I just thought maybe I would help someone else with their problems, instead of dealing with my own. I just wanted to let you know you had someone to talk to ok? I’m sorry I bothered you.”
“It hurts to talk Sam, ok? It hurts.”

Sam was surprised that , when she turned round, she could see tears in Phil’s eyes.

All her anger seemed to melt away, looking into his eyes, seeing how much pain he was truly in.

“Is it Cindy?”

Phil just looked back down at his drink on the bar.

“Phil, you two were married for a long time, it’s gonna take time for you to adjust, for things to get back to normal. When someone you love leaves you, it leaves a . . . “

“But that’s the thing, I don’t miss her alright, I don’t care.”

“Phil, this is me, you don’t have to pretend . . . “

“No Sam, don’t you understand, I should be devastated, I know that, but I’m just. . . not. I don’t feel anything, except maybe relief. How awful is that? We were together, on and off, since we were 18, and I feel nothing that she’s gone. What kind of man does that make me?”

He slumped over in his stool. Sam had never seen the great Phillip Hunter look so defeated.

“Phil, you shouldn’t feel bad, she left you remember, and you know what they say: you can have too much of a good thing. Everyone has to move on at some point. Maybe it’s better that you split up now, before it was too late.”

He looked up into her eyes, “You mean before we had kids. Oh God, if that IVF treatment had worked and we’d . . . and she was . . . what about . . .”

Sam wasn’t sure what to say, “Come on Phil, lets get you home, I think you need some sleep. You might feel better in the morning.”

“No, Sam, I’m fine, thanks.”

“Phil, I’m not leaving you here on your own. I’m taking you home.”

“But I don’t have a home anymore Sam. Cindy’s there, and there’s a sofa, but I don’t think I can face her and I asked Steve, but it turned out he had better things to do. I’ll be fine, I’ll find a B and B, or something. Just go home Sam, I’m sorry for all this.”

“Phil, you have nothing to apologise for, and come on”, she told him, wrenching the glass from his hand, placing it out of his reach on the bar, and getting up from her stool, “You’re coming home with me for the night.”

“No, Sam, I can’t”, he protested immediately. “I’ve already put you out enough, and there’s Abi and. . .”

“Don’t be stupid, you haven’t put me out at all, and Abi will be fine about it, trust me. I have a perfectly good spare room, which is going to waste.”

Sam silenced him, just as he looked like he was about to protest further, “And no arguments ok?”

Phil gave in, knowing better than to argue with Samantha Nixon, once she had made her mind up about something. “Can we stop by my place first to pick up some things, Cindy won’t be back from work till later”, he told her, looking at his watch to check the time.

“Sure”, Sam replied, linking her arm with his, leading him out of the pub.

As they waited for a taxi, Phil said “Sam?”

“Yea?”

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome”, she told him, both smiling at one another.

ok, well, you said you wanted me to carry on so i have!

but i'm not too sure about this chapter, so i was thinking, i'll see what you all think, and if you agree, i'll delete this, and leave it as like, a one shot ending thing

(hope that makes sense)

Sam shot up in bed like she’d just been shot. Something had woken her up: a loud bang.

For several moments, until she was fully awake, she thought she had a burglar. Then she remembered that she had a guest in the house; a guest who, with all he was going through, probably wouldn’t be sleeping all that well.

She climbed out of bed, slipping on her white silk dressing robe and heading for the door, grabbing a rather chunky, heavy torch from her bedside cabinet on her way out.

Not exactly a lethal weapon, she thought to herself, as she made her way across the landing to open the door to the spare room. It was quite clear that the bed had been slept in, but was now very much empty.

She looked down at the torch in her hand, feeling rather silly.

Better to be safe than sorry she concluded.

Placing the torch on the cupboard just outside her room, she made her way down the stairs to find a very groggy looking Phil sitting at her desk, reading, what looked like yesterdays newspaper.

He was sat with her back to her, and not hearing her come down the stairs caused him to jump when she said “Phil?”

Sam had never seen him move so fast, as he lept up out of his chair, turned to face her and backed away a couple of steps.

Sam couldn’t suppress a little giggle, “You’re not scared of me Mr Hunter are you?”

Phil was too wound up to see the funny side, and managed to splutter out, “Sam? What’cha doing? Going round, sneaking up on people. You’ll give someone a heart attack.”

Sam just laughed now, incapable of thinking up a suitable comeback, for funniness of the situation. “Whatever Phil. What the hell are you doing down here in the middle of the night, reading last nights newspaper.”

“Couldn’t sleep”, he replied, shrugging and sitting back down.

“Sorry, I guess that was pretty obvious”, she replied, “You want to talk about it?”

“Nothing to talk about really”, he told her, “I just. . .”, he shrugged again, “I dunno.”

Sam gestured towards the newspaper in front of Phil, trying to change the subject, “Abi’s been collecting articles for her university course.”

“Wondered why some of the pages were missing. I thought maybe someone had gone a little crazy scissor happy.” He looked up at her with a cheeky smile.

“What exactly are you trying to imply Phil?” Sam questioned him with a raised eyebrow,

Phil smiled again, “Me? Nothing.”

They both laughed a little.

“You want a coffee?” Sam asked him.

“Sure, thanks”, Phil replied.

Sam went through to the kitchen to make the drinks.

THE NEXT MORNING, BACK AT SUN HILL CID . . .

Jo was sat on the end of Zain’s desk, chewing the lid of a pen, as they working on a burglary case. She just happened to be looking out of the window, when she saw Sam’s car pull into the car park. She couldn’t believe her eyes when Sam got out of the car with Phil.

“Hey, Zain, look, quick, you’ll never guess who’s come to work with Sam this morning?”

Terry was sat at his own desk, not too far away, “I’ll take a wild guess and say Phil.”

Jo turned to look at him, a look of confusion on her face, “How the hell did you know that?”

“Well”, he replied, “we were in the pub last night, and Phil was pretty drunk. Sam said she’d stay and make sure he got home ok.”

“Well, it doesn’t look like she dropped him off at his own home”, Jo said, with a hint of mischief. “Does this mean Sam and Phil are a couple then?”

“About bloody time, I say”, Terry concluded, just as the newly appointed ‘couple’ walked through the doors.

Sam could feel people staring the minute she walked into the office. She noticed where Jo was sat, and realised that she had probably seen, and then told everyone in the office, that her and Phil had come in together that morning.

Usually, that kind of thing would bother her, but not this morning: she hadn’t done anything wrong.

She walked over to Phil’s desk with him, and once they were out of earshot, asked him “Are you sure you’re ready to be here Phil, I’m sure the DCI would understand.”

Phil touched her arm and smiled, “I know Sam, but I’m fine.”

At her unconvinced expression, he continued, “I need to be here, it’ll help take my mind off things.”

“Ok, but if you need anything you just let me know ok?”

“Thanks Sam.”

A FEW HOURS LATER . . .

Sam was just emerging from an interview room, where she’d successfully forced a confession from a local drug dealer, when Inspector Gina Gold, probably her most valued friend at the station, poked her head out from around her office door and gestured for her to come in.

“What can I do for you Gina?” Sam asked.

Gina sat down, gesturing for Sam to do the same. “Well, actually, it’s more what I can do for you”, she told Sam.

Sam was confused, “Sorry, you’ve lost me.”

“You know what it’s like around here Sam, people gossiping. Lets just say news travels fast.”

Sam couldn’t help but grin, suddenly realising what Gina was talking about. “You saw me and Phil come to work this morning.”

“Well, actually, no, I didn’t, but a lot of your colleagues did, and . . . well, it seems to be a topic of interesting conversation for many at the moment.”

Sam simply shrugged, “Let ‘em talk.”

“Just thought I’d give you a heads up.”

There was a few moments of silence, before curiosity got the better of Gina, “So, is there anything going on that I should know about?”

Sam stifled a giggle, before shaking her head alittle and replying, “No, Gina, it’s really no big deal. Phil was pretty drunk last night, so I offered to take him home, but then he didn’t want to stay at home because of Cindy, so I said he could stay at mine.”

Gina raised an eyebrow. “And?”

“And he slept in the spare room, and it seemed pointless to travel in separate cars this morning, so I offered him a lift. Like I said, it’s really no big deal.”

“Sam you’ve said that so many times in the space of ooo, about 5 minutes, I wonder if you ‘re trying to convince yourself.”

“It was just . . . nice.”

Now Gina raised both eyebrows. “Nice?”

“We talked . . . pretty much all night really. About everything. It’s just like”, she paused, “Never mind.”

“Go on”, Gina probed.

“Well, it’s just like, Phil’s got this different, almost sensitive side to him, but it keeps it so well hidden, he doesn’t like people to see it, to let people think he’s vunerable.”

Gina was about to respond when there was a knock at the door. She turned back to Sam, “We’ll finish this later”, she told her, as she got up and opened the door, revealing PC Roger Valentine standing at the door.

“Come in”, she told him as Sam left to make her way back up to CID.

Chapter 3

Sam noticed that Phil had a kind of . . . confused look on his face when he walked back into CID later on that day.

She walked over to his desk, where he was sat chewing on the end of a pen, and perched on the edge.

“Hey”, she greeted him, “Everything ok?”

“Yeah”, he replied, taking a momentary pause in the pen chewing to glance up at her, before realising what he’d been doing and placing the pen on his desk, “I was just thinking.”

Sam struggled to hold back a little giggle. “Careful Phil.”

Once again, he looked up at her, “What? Why?” he asked, a little worried.

She lent down to scrutinise his face. “I think you’re getting wrinkles”, she told him, as seriously as she could manage.

Phil gave her a sarcastic ‘very funny’ smile, before Sam slapped him on the arm playfully. “Cheer up, what’s wrong anyway?”

“Gina’s been giving me funny looks all morning and then when I suggested that we would take over a serious assault case from Steve and Dan, she refused and said I should work on it with Mickey. Do you think I’ve done something to upset her?”

Sam had been listening to Phil’s story with some amusement, and Phil noticed her smile.

“It’s not funny Sam, I really think I’ve done something to offend her.”

Sam was still trying to control her giggles, “Sorry Phil, it’s just that . . . “

“What?” he pressed.

“Well, I think it might be my fault.”

“What? How can it be your fault?”

“Well, people saw us come into work together this morning and people were talking, so when she called me into her office, I just . . . put her straight.”

“What did you say?”

“That you stayed in my spare room last night, and that we talked and . . .”

“Oh great”, Phil remarked, “That’s why she wanted to keep us apart. She probably thinks I’m trying to come onto you again or something.”

“And are you?” Sam asked with a mischievous smile.

“Phil noticed the gleam in her eye, and couldn’t resist, “Would it be such a bad thing if I was?” he replied.

Sam felt her body lean forwards before she had time to process the action. They were so close, almost touching, when Mickey popped his head round the doors and shouted, “Come on Phil, the victims come round at St Hughes and the doctors have said she’s fit enough to be interviewed.”

After jumping apart slightly at the little interruption, Phil replied, “Yeah, sure, I’ll be there in a minute.”

“Meet you in the car.” Mickey left to make his way down to the car park.

“We’ll talk later”, Phil told Sam, before grabbing his jack et of the back of his chair and following Mickey out of the double doors of CID.

Sam walked over to her own desk, feeling a little light headed about what had just happened.

Did I really just nearly kiss Phil?

“Sorry to interrupt back there Sarge”, Mickey apologised to Phil as he climbed into the car.
“It’s fine”, Phil snapped, a little harsher than he meant to.

“So . . . ?” Mickey probed.

“So what?” Phil questioned.

“So, what’s going on between you and Sam?”

“Nothing, and that’s DS Nixon to you.”

“Sorry Sarge, I was only asking.”

“Mickey do me a favour and just drive the car ok?”

“Whatever.”

Chapter 4

Sam jumped slightly, as her mobile phone bleeped to indicate she had received a text message.

Glad for the moments break from her paperwork, she reached down to retrieve the phone from her bag. Opening up the new message, she read

Hi Sam, its Phil. Do u want 2 go 4 a drink 2night and we can tlk about what happened? Tb x

She was suddenly nervous and excited at the same time. She must have had an insane grin plastered all over her face, as DC Masters approached her Sergeant asking, “Somebody special?”

“Sam jumped a little, closing the phone and placing it on her desk. “Oh no, not really” she lied. “Just an old friend wanting to go for a drink tonight.”

Well, that’s not a total lie, she told herself; Phil is a friend, although after what happened today maybe he could be more than just a friend. But wait, she suddenly had a very bad feeling, what if he wants to meet tonight to tell me it was a mistake, him nearly kissing me, that he wants to forget it. After all the times I’ve rejected him, I wouldn’t blame him.

Jo interrupted her thoughts once again. “Liar” she said, before returning to her own desk, obviously content to leave the subject for now.

Later on in the pub . . .

Phil got to his feet when he saw Samantha walk in, trying not to notice how she seemed to just light up any room she entered, even a poky, smelly, smoky pub such as this one. His heart did a little jump at seeing her, this beautiful women whom he had adored for so long from afar.

Sam noticed him, and made her way over to him, trying to give away how nervous she was. She knew she was being stupid, but there was just something about Phil Hunter that made her feel like a teenager again; all hormones and adrenaline. She was constantly trying to maintain a serious exterior, but wasn’t always sure how she did at pulling it off.

“Hey”, she greeted him.

“Hey”, he replied, showing her to the table he had found a couple of minutes before she arrived, “You want a drink?”

“Sure, I’ll have a gin and tonic please.”

A few minutes later, Phil had bought the drinks and they were happily sat, talking about anything but what was really on both their minds.

Several moments later, during a moment of uncomfortable silence, Phil decided to take the plunge. “Sam, listen, about what happened earlier, I’m sorry . . . “

“You are?” Sam asked, before Phil could complete his sentence.

“I didn’t mean to embarrass you or . . . “

“You didn’t”, she told him, smiling at his concern for her status. “See, I told Gina you had a sensitive side.”

“You did what?” he exclaimed, horrified at the thought.

“Never mind, it doesn’t matter. I thought you’d asked me here to tell me it was a mistake and that you just wanted to forget it.”

“You what? Are you kidding me? I thought I’d upset you. So, you don’t mind about before . . . what happened when we . . . nearly . . . you know.”

Sam was quite amused at seeing Phil Hunter lost for words, and smiled before telling him, “There was just one problem.”

“Oh yeah?” he asked, “And what was that?”

She placed her drink down on the table, before leaning into him “We didn’t get to finish it.”

As she leant further in, and their lips met in a gentle kiss, Sam felt a shiver run down her spine at the effect the contact had on her.
Phil couldn’t believe how soft Sam’s touch was.

As the kiss deepened, becoming more and more passionate, Phil cupped Sam’s cheek, while she placed a hand on his muscular chest.

Sam had gone all weak at the knee’s and it was a good thing she was already sat down, otherwise she was afraid she may have collapsed.

Phil was totally absorbed in this woman in front of him, pressing her body against his own. She was gentle, yet full of passion, and he could feel his own passion rising, before the two broke apart, gasping for breath.

“Wow”, Phil exclaimed, before he could stop himself.

“Wow yourself”, Sam replied.

“Come on”, Sam gestured towards the door, “Let’s go back to mine.”

Phil hesitated, “Sam, are you sure?”

Sam kissed him again, putting off any protests he may have had.

“Lead the way.”

The two left hand in hand.

Chapter 5

Sam woke up with a smile on her face. She’d been dreaming about her and Phil and how they’d . . .

Wait a minute, she thought, that wasn’t a dream.

Last night came flooding back to her, and her smile grew wider and wider. Now fully awake yet, she rolled over and leant over to put an arm around Phil. However, all she grasped was more duvet. A bit surprised by this, she was now fully awake, up and dressed in her nightgown in a matter of seconds.

As she made her way down the stairs, she was relieved to hear the sound of the toaster pop, and plate’s rattling.

She leant against the doorframe of her kitchen for a moment, watching Phil as, with his back to her, he tried to juggle hot toast and a mug full of coffee at the same time.

When he managed to drop the toast, Sam couldn’t help a little giggle, and Phil turned in surprise to see her standing there.

“Sam, what are you doing? I was going to bring this up to you”, he scolded her, gesturing to a tray on the side which held a mug of coffee, a slice of toast and the morning newspaper.

“For me?” she asked, happy that he had once again proven her point that he was more than capable of being thoughtful when he wanted to be.

“Well, the toast may be a little cold now, I did make it a while ago, but then the kettle took ages, and I got the newspaper stuck in the letterbox . . .” He picked up the paper, which Sam could now see was full of holes and tears.

Sam could see the look of embarrassment on his face and went to reassure him with a soft kiss.

“Thank-you”, she told him, before he leant down for another kiss, this one more lingering. Before it deepened, Sam pulled back slightly.

“What’s wrong?” Phil asked her.

“It’s just, Phil, are you sure you’re . . . ok?”

“Never better”, he told her before leaning in for yet another kiss.

Sam took a step back, “No Phil, I mean really. You’ve only just . . . well, you and Cindy . . .”

“Are well and truly in the past”, he assured her. “Sam, I’ve never been happier.”

“It's just, when i woke up this morning and you weren't there?" She shrugged, "I don't know, i guess i panicked a little bit. I just don’t want you to feel like . . .?” She couldn’t seem to find the right words.

“What? Like I’ve got the most beautiful girlfriend in the world? That I care about her more than she knows. Sam, i'm afraid to say i'm not going anywhere.”

Suddenly, a terrible thought occurred to him, “That is, if you’re ok with what happened last night. I don’t want you to feel under pressure or anything.”

Sam was still glowing from being referred to as Phil’s ‘girlfriend’, and decided to silence him with a kiss.

“Come on”, she said, noticing the time, “let’s go and get ready for work”.

Phil groaned and pulled a face, “Do we have to go in today? We could call in sick”, he suggested.

“Both of us?” Sam asked, “Yeah, like that wouldn’t be suspicious enough. Anyway, what’s the matter? Is the prospect of having to spend an entire day working with me too much for you to handle?” She raised an eyebrow, as if daring him to agree.

He knew better than to even try, “Good point”, he remarked, before placing his mug down on the worktop, walking past Sam, before suddenly racing for stairs and then calling “Beat you to the shower.”

Sam gave chase, but Phil had had a head start and won by a mile. By the time she reached the top of the stairs, Phil had already locked the bathroom door.

“That’s not fair”, she called, “It’s my bathroom.”

Sam heard the bolt being pulled back, as Phil popped his head round the door to give a cheeky grin, “We could always share”, he suggested.

Sam made as if she was disgusted at the idea, tutting, rolling her eyes and muttering, “Always the same”, before smiling and pushing him back into the bathroom, closing and bolting the door behind them.

Chapter 6

Hours later, both Phil and Sam had been working on a case involving rather vicious assaults on elderly women.

However, Jack had uncovered a possible new lead in Smithy’s case, and had recruited Phil, Zain and Mickey to help try and prove their Sergeant innocent.

Sam was a little disappointed at being split up from Phil, but knew it was for a good cause. She had asked new PC, Emma Keane to help her, as she had helped with the initial arrest, and appeared to have made good relations with one of the victims in particular.

Having just gotten a full confession out of the suspect, full if not necessarily 100% by the book, Sam was on her way back up to CID when several officers including Jack and Neil rushed past her.

“Gov, what’s going on?” she asked, rather puzzled.

“There’s been some kind of accident up at Longmarsh, we have to get up there right away.”

Sam’s heart skipped a beat. Instinctively, her first thought was “Phil? Is he ok?”

“We’re not sure”

Then she realised dhow she must have sounded and tried to cover her tracks a little. “And Zain and Mickey?”

“We really don’t know much, we’re on our way down there now.”

“Do you want me to come with you?” Sam asked, just wanting to know that Phil was ok.

“No”, Neil spoke up, “Sam, I need you to stay here and hold the fort, We’ve got enough officers already on the way.”

“Gov”, she answered, although privately upset at his refusal.

Jack seemed a little softer; “We’ll let you know the situation as soon as we do Sam.”

Sam stood on the stairs watching as every assigned officer left the building. For a little moment, she couldn’t move.

Phil, she thought, what if something terrible happened?

She shook her head, no, she wouldn’t even think that way, she told herself, climbing the remaining stairs back up to CID.

As Marty Johnson was wheeled out of Long marsh on a stretcher, Jack went back inside to find out what had happened.

“So?” he asked the two policemen who stood in front of him. Zain had gone with Johnson to monitor his condition and keep Jack up to speed. “What the hell happened here?”

Silence.

Jack rarely lost his temper, but he was pretty close right at this moment.

“Well? Somebody had better explain to me how I send three coppers to investigate a great lead, and an inmate ends up with a 6 inch hole in his gut.”

He looked from Phil, who was sat on a chair, covered in Johnson’s blood, and Mickey, who stood with his arms folded.

“Mickey?”

“We got here and the guards let us in. They kicked Johnson out of his cell, so we could search it properly.”

“And?”

“While we were in there, we heard a commotion come from another part of the prison, so Phil went to check it out.”

“You and Zain stayed in the cell?”

“Gov”, he answered.

He looked down at the still, blood-soaked Phil. “Phil?”

“I didn’t do it”, was all he said.

“No-ones saying you did anything Phil, but we need to know what happened.”

“We heard then noise, so I went downstairs. The guards were busy breaking up a fight in the canteen, when I noticed Johnson disappear. One minute he was there and the next he was gone. So I tried to find him. He was in the shower block. He had his back to me. I walked in and as I got closer, I could see that there was blood on the floor. I rushed towards him and he just collapsed.”

He looked up at Jack, “That’s when I shouted for help and the guards arrived. I swear I didn’t do it.”

“You didn’t see anyone else in the showers?”

“No.”

“You’re sure?

At Phil’s nod, Jack told him, “Alright then Phil, lets get you back to the station so you can get cleaned up.”

Phil was still in a kind of daze when the arrived back at the station about half an hour later. Just as they got through the main doors, Jack’s phone rang and the caller ID identified it as Zain.

“Zain? How is he?”

“Good and bad”, Zain answered. “The good news is he’s regained consciousness. The bad news is he’s blaming Phil for everything, says he wants to make a formal complaint”.

Sam was on her way to brief Gina about the suspect she had arrested earlier for the muggings and to praise PC Keane’s hard work, when she heard somewhat of a commotion at the cells. Walking straight past Gina’s office, her heart gave that little jump it did whenever she saw Phil, who was stood with Jack, DCI Keane, Mickey and June behind the booking-in desk.

That little jump of her heart quickly turned to pounding as she got close enough to hear what was being said.

Jack was apologising to Phil, “I’m sorry Phil, there’s nothing we can do at the moment.”

Sam was shocked to see DCI Keane walk up and take Phil by the arm, “Phillip Hunter, I’m arresting you on suspicion of attempted murder, you do not have to say anything . . . anything you do say may be given in evidence.”

Chapter 7

Sam caught Phil’s eye, as he was pushed through the doors leading to the cells. The moment the eye contact was broken, as Phil was obscured from her view, Sam made a sudden start in his direction. As she did, she felt strong hands grab her arms from behind, and whirled round to see Gina staring back at her.

“Leave him for now”, she said, as Sam turned back around to look at where Phil had been taken. “Come on”, she tried to coax Sam into turning her round in the direction of the Inspectors office. Sam was in a sort of trance, all she could see was that desperation in Phil’s eyes. “Come on”, Gina urged again.

Once inside her office, Gina closed the door behind them. This seemed to snap Sam out of her trance.

“Gina, what’s going on?” she asked, “Is there some sort of undercover operation going on here that someone forgot to tell me about?”

Gina gestured for Sam to sit down, as she walked around her desk and sat in her own seat.

“Gina?”

Gina hated to see Sam upset: she hated what she was about to tell her even more, but she wasn’t about to lie to the Sergeant, who was also a good friend.

“There’s no undercover operation Sam.”

“Then what the hell is going on, because unless I knew better, I would swear I just saw Phil being arrested?”

“I got a call from the DI at CPS about 5 minutes ago, a heads up if you will.”

Sam could feel her already racing heartbeat quicken even more. “A heads up about what?”

Gina looked up at Sam now, “There was some sort of accident up at Longmarsh. An inmate was stabbed, and taken to St Hughes fighting for his life. He regained consciousness half an hour ago.”

Sam frowned. “I still don’t see what any of this has to do with Phil.”

“Marty Johnson, the inmate who was stabbed, is saying that it was Phil who stabbed him.”

Sam, who had previously been standing, sunk down into the chair she had been leaning on. “What? But . . . he can’t . . . he wouldn’t . . . that’s impossible.” She looked up at Gina, her eyes pleading with her to agree.

“There’s no evidence to suggest he’s guilty so far. The knife used has been sent for forensics, and they’re still appealing for any witnesses in the prison who may have seen what happened.”

Sam was lost for words.

“Jack’s in with him now, taking his statement.”

Sam leapt out of her seat, “I want to see him.”

“Sam, do you think that’s a good idea?” Gina cautioned.

“I want to see him”, Sam repeated.

“Alright, I’ll see what I can do”, she promised, “Just stay here for the minute ok?”

Sam nodded and sat back down.

Out in the corridor, Gina saw Jack coming out of the cells.

“How is he?” she asked the DCI.

“I’m not sure to be honest”, he replied.

Gina looked away, “Has he said what happened?”

“Claims he found Johnson half dead, and got covered in blood, when Johnson fell on him, and he tried to help him. He said he shouted for help and that’s when they were found by the guard on duty”

Gina was always a little extra dubious when it came to Phil Hunter, and even though she didn’t really believe that he would go this far, she had to check. “Do you believe him?”

Jack answered, “Yeah I do, why?”

“Just checking we agree”, Gina told him. “Sam Nixon wants to see him.”

“He specifically said he didn’t want to see her.”

Gina was taken aback, “Why not?”

Jack shrugged, “Didn’t say.”

Yvonne turned the key in the lock of Phil Hunters cell. “10 minutes tops ok?”

Sam shot her a grateful look, “Thanks Yvonne.”

Yvonne smiled and made her way back to the booking in desk.

Sam stepped inside the cell to find Phil sat on the bed, his arms closed around his pulled up knees, on which his head rest.

Sam had to fight back tears, as she walked up to him, where he had obviously fallen asleep.

She touched the top of head, “You’ll get a crick in your neck sleeping like that”, she told him.

Phil jumped awake like he’d been shot. He noticed her, and pulled away from where she sat, trying to hide his face from view, as he didn’t want her to know that he’d been crying.

“I told Jack I didn’t want to see you”, he said, not unkindly.

“I know what you told Jack Phil, but I was so worried.”

“You should go”, he told her.

“Phil?” She couldn’t hold back the tears any longer, and one escaped to slide down her cheek, she failed in holding back a sniffle.

Upon hearing her crying, Phil turned back, and went to sit back down beside her, taking her hand in his own.

“Sam, I’m sorry, I just . . . I didn’t want you to see me here”, he looked around the cell, “Like this.”

Sam brought her hand up to touch his face, his eyes closing at the touch of her warm skin.

“I didn’t do it Sam”, he told her.

“She smiled at him, “I know.”

Chapter 8

Sam was sat, in her own little world, at her desk in CID, when Gina Gold walked through the doors.

Gina approached her. “I thought you might still be up here.”

Sam straightened up in her chair. “Yeah”, she said stretching, “I’ve just got these case files to finish off.”

“Sam, have you been here all night?”

“Huh?” Sam looked up at the clock hanging on the wall. Seeing that it was already gone 7 in the morning, and that she had indeed been sitting there since about 9 the previous night, Sam suddenly sprung into action, collecting up all the notes that she hadn’t really touched all night.

“Sorry Gina, I have to go. Abi will be wondering where I am . . . and I start my shift in nearly an hour . . . and I have to change . . .”

She made a move to leave, before Gina placed a hand on her arm, halting her sudden bolt for the doors.

“Sam, Abi is fine, she called here a minute ago to say that she stayed at a friends last night. She said it got late last night and since you didn’t answer any of her calls last night, she assumed that you’d be here working on a case, so she didn’t want to disturb you. She tried your mobile this morning but it was turned off, so she rang the station.”

“Oh, ok then.” Sam sank back down into her seat, sighing as she went.

“Sam, are you ok?”

“Yeah, sure, I’m fine,” Sam avoided eye contact.

Sam looked up to see Gina staring sceptically at her with raised eyebrows.

Sam looked back down at her desk again. “It’s just . . .” She couldn’t seem to find the right words.

“Phil?”

“He didn’t do it Gina.”

“Yes, well, while I very much believe you, it’s not me he has to convince. DPS are not going to take this lightly Sam.”

“I know.”

Gina hated to see her look so defeated. “All Phil has to do is tell the truth and I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

Sam smiled, wishing she felt as confident as Gina sounded.

“I just . . . “

“What?”

“I only just got him in my life Gina. I mean, properly in my life.”

Gina acknowledged this with a nod and a smile, before Sam continued.

“I can’t lose him already Gina, I won’t.”

Sam didn’t usually like to show her vulnerable side, but she hadn’t the energy left to protest when Gina made her way around Sam’s desk, and swept her into a hug.

Chapter 9

“Interview with Detective Sergeant Phillip Hunter commencing at 8.35am. Officers present are DCI Meadows and MCI Keane.” Jack stated for the benefit of the tape. He let Keane take the lead.

“So, DS Hunter, would you like to tell us what happened up at Long Marsh prison yesterday?”

Phil nodded before beginning. “I went to the prison with Zain and Mickey to follow up a lead about Smithy. We were searching through a suspect’s cell, Marty Johnson’s. We heard a commotion coming from downstairs. I said I’d go and find out what was happened. You know, see if I could help or anything?”

“You went alone. You left DC’s Webb and Nadir searching Johnson’s cell?”

“Yeah”, Phil answered.

“Go on Phil”, Jack encouraged.

“I got down to the main dining area, to find two of the inmates had kicked off at each other. They were both really going for one another. I looked past them to see Johnson grinning like some kind of Cheshire cat. I looked back towards the fight to see the guards had begun to regain some control over the situation and when I looked back, Johnson was gone.”

“So you followed him?”

“He’d been stood next to the shower block, so I assumed that’s where he’d gone. He wouldn’t have had time to get any further away from me. I only looked away for a second. I got inside the showers and saw Johnson standing there, but he had his back to me. I walked towards him, and suddenly he just turned and fell on me, covered in blood. I shouted for help and that’s when the prison guards found us.”

DCI Keane was the first to speak. “When you left the cell, had you found anything incriminating in Johnson’s cell? Anything that might link him to Larson or anything to suggest he may have set Sergeant Smith up?”

“Not when I left, no.”

“And you and Sergeant Smith are good friends are you not?”

Phil had no idea what Keane was on about, but answered his question anyway, “I suppose so”, he said with a shrug.

“You have a reputation around here don’t you DS Hunter? As a bit of a bad boy? Likes to get results with minimal work, no matter how many rules you break?”

Phil frowned in confusion.

He wasn’t the only one, as Jack came to his defence before he had time to formulate an answer. “DCI Keane, it is not Phil’s past in question here, no matter how dubious it may or may not be. I think we should remain focused on the particular incident in question here.”

“Ah, but I think that particular past has everything to do with this particular incident DCI Meadows”, DCI Keane told him in no uncertain terms. You see? I think Mr Hunter can be quite good with his fists when he wants to be. Isn’t that right Mr Hunter?”

Phil just looked at the DCI. He actually thinks I did it, Phil realised, He really believed I stabbed Johnson.

“Ok, so you were searching Johnson’s cell and couldn’t find anything to link him to Sergeant Smith, which makes you mad right? Then you hear noises from below, and already hacked off at not being able to help Smithy, you go downstairs pumped, perhaps looking for a fight.”

Jack tried to intervene, “DCI Keane?”

Keane either wasn’t listening, or he was just ignoring him, as he continued on at Phil. “What you find is an already escalated fight, with Johnson, the original source of your anger, who appears to laughing at the situation, maybe even us. He gets some sort of kicks, while your friend is locked up with a bunch of low-life criminals for something you believe he didn’t do.”

“He didn’t.” Phil told him, matter of fact.

Keane shrugged, “Be that as it may, you followed him into the showers and finding yourself alone with him, he began to wound you up. Taunt you. Maybe even insult you. This fuels your already built up anger, as he produces a knife out of somewhere, maybe his pocket. Maybe he had it hidden in the showers. He comes at you with it and you wrestle him to the floor. You fight for several moments, and somehow manage to get on top, knocking the knife from his hand. You pick the knife up, rage taking over, you only see red now, you only see what this scumbag has done to your friend, and you stab him in the chest.” Phil was still shaking his head emphatically. “After a couple of seconds, you realise your mistake. You realise what you’ve done and you shout for the prison guards. Isn’t that right DS Hunter? You gave into your temper, and now a young man is lying in the hospital in intensive care. Because of you.”

Phil lost it, smashing his hands down on the desk and rising to his feet in one swift movement, shouting “No, that’s not what happened.”

There was a knock on the door, Gina Gold popped her head around the door and asked Jack, “Can I have a word please sir?”

Phil sank back down into his chair with a heavy sigh, his head in his hands.

Jack turned back to Phil, “Interview suspended at 8.52am. He switched the tape off.

As Jack and Frank left the interview room, a uniformed office entered to keep an eye on Phil, until the interview was ready to be continued.

As Jack shut the door behind him, he walked over the corridor to where Gina was stood with Keane. He could see that she looked rather distressed.

“What is it Gina? What’s wrong?” he asked immediately.

“Zain just called me from the hospital. Marty Johnson died half an hour ago.”

“Oh great”, Jack said, “That’s just what we need.”

“He had an undetected blood clot in one of his main arteries. They took him into surgery but it was too late.”

Keane was left to state the obvious, as neither Jack nor Gina wanted to. “Then, this is now a murder investigation. We’ll take a 15 minute break, and then I want us back in that interview room.” He walked down the corridor and up the stairs to wards CID, passing Samantha on the stairs, who was on her way down.

Gina turned back to Jack, “How is he?” she asked.

She had looked away before she saw Sam come down the stairs, and both her and Jack were unaware she was silently approaching them.

“Well, if he was alright before, he’s not now”, Jack told her. “He could be on a murder charge and Keane’s already convinced that Phil’s guilty. He really laid into him before Gina, and like he pointed out, this is now a murder investigation.”

Sam felt something stick in her throat as she came up behind Gina.

“Murder?” she all but squeaked.

Gina turned sharply, “Sam? What are you doing? I didn’t know you were there.”

“There’s been some news Sam”, she tried to break it to her gently.

“What kind of news?”

Jack took over, “Zain called from the hospital to tell us that Marty Johnson died half an hour ago Sam.”

“But you’ve cleared Phil of any involvement right?” she asked, the hope plain to see in her eyes.

Gina looked down at her, “We’re doing everything we can Sam.”

Sam felt tears form behind her eyes. “Can I see him?”

Chapter 10

Sam shut the door behind her as she entered the interview room. She vowed to herself that she would try and be as strong for Phil as she could, but one look from those deep brown eyes of his, and she rushed over, allowing him to gather her up in a hug, both with tears streaming down their faces. They stayed that way for several minutes, neither wanting to let the other go.

Eventually, Sam mustered up the will to pull back slightly, her heart melting as Phil reached up to push back a strand of stray hair back behind her ear and whispered “Sorry.”

“What for?” she asked, a bit confused.

“All of this”, he gestured at the room around him, as he let Sam go and walked away from the desk, towards the back of the room. “I’m sorry you’ve been dragged into this.” It took all of his courage to say what he said next, but knew he had to say it; he didn’t want Sam to think she had to stay. “I’ll understand you know, if you don’t want to stay.”

Sam walked up close to him and stroked the side of his face with the back of her hand, “I’m not going anywhere”, she told him, matter of fact. Phil watched as her beautiful face cracked into a smile, if rather sombre, “Whether you like it or not.”

He smiled back, and she stepped up on her tiptoes to give him a quick kiss.

Then, she took Phil’s arm, encouraging him back towards the desk. They both sat on the desk facing one another, hand in hand, their feet resting on the chairs.

“Phil, there’s something I need to tell you, something’s happened. But I need you to know that this doesn’t change anything. I know you’re innocent and we’re still going to prove it ok?”

Phil just nodded; trying to imagine what Sam was about to tell him.

“Marty Johnson had a blood clot in his leg. It caused him to fit and the surgeons weren’t in time to remove he clot. He died about an hour ago.”

She looked up at Phil, trying to interpret his reaction. He seemed to be in shock, staring into space, with his mouth open, trying to process this new information.

“But . . .” he began, before practically leaping off the desk, scratching his head. “That means . . .”

Sam cut him off before he could say any more, “Phil, listen to me. Nothing has changed. We are going to prove your innocence.” She reached out for his hand, grasping it in both of hers. “The test results should be back today, and then they’ll show us whose fingerprints are on it, and who the real killer is.”

“Oh my god”, Phil whispered, so quietly that Sam barely heard. He looked dup into her eyes, and all she could see was pure fear.

“What is it?” she asked him, as he dropped her hands, turning away with one hand on his hip and the other on the back of his head. “I touched it Sam.” At her frown, he clarified, “The knife? I touched it. When Johnson collapsed, it was right next to me, I picked it up to move it out of the way.” When he looked back at her, there were tears in his eyes, “I didn’t know”, he whispered, “I didn’t know.”

Sam didn’t get a chance to say anything else, or even comfort him, as there was a sharp knock on the door and Gina entered the room. “DCI Keane’s on his way, he’s ready to resume the interview.” She took one look at Phil before motioning for Sam to leave, “Come on Sam.”

Sam walked over to where Phil was still standing and kissed him on the cheek, whispering into his ear, “Just tell them the truth baby. I promise we’ll get through this.”

Sam’s words were the only thing that kept him from breaking down completely as Phil watched Gina usher her out of the room, moments before Jack entered, closely followed by DCI Keane.

Chapter 11

Once inside the relative safety of Gina’s office, Sam let everything out; she couldn’t hold back the tears any more. Gina just held her while all the pain and the sorrow of the past couple of days came flooding out. She didn’t usually cry, or even show any kind of emotion, but she was too physically and mentally drained to care any more.

“It doesn’t look good does it?” Sam asked. She had tried to sound confident for Phil; she couldn’t imagine how helpless he must feel, but inside, she knew how bad the situation was.

“Mickey called from the prison to say that he’s interviewed most of the prisoners, and most of them have alibi’s. There’s one guy who doesn’t, but he’s due parole in a couple of days, and Smithy reckons he wouldn’t mess up his chances of seeing his son again.”

“So Phil’s guilty then?” Sam all but shouted.

“No Sam, that’s not what I meant”, Gina tried to amend. “Forensics are due in an hour”, she noted looking at her watch. “Then we’ll know who we’re looking for.”

Sam looked down to the floor. “He touched the knife Gina.”

“He what?”

“He moved the knife away from Johnson when he collapsed.”

“Oh, well”, Gina tried to re group. “Well, in that case, there’ll be two sets of prints on the knife won’t there?” she asked.

All Sam could do was shrug. Gina hated to see Sam like this. She was one of, if not the, strongest person she knew and she looked so defeated. Like all the fight had just left her. “It’s just . . . whoever did this had been clever enough to frame a police officer for murder, what if they wiped the knife before Phil got there?”

“Well, lets wait and see on that one shall we?” Gina suggested. She noticed how pale looking Sam was and suggested softly, “Sam, why don’t you go home and get some rest. You were up all night last night and you don’t look too good to be honest.”

“Thanks Gina, but I need to be here.”

“Sam”, Gina said more sternly, “Phil wouldn’t want you running yourself into the ground. Go home. I’ll call you if there’s any developments. I promise.”

Sam knew better than to even try and argue with Gina Gold once she had her mind set on something, and with no energy to even try and put up any sort of fight, she nodded, before leaving the office in search of her bag and jacket.

Sam walked through her front door to find Abi sat in the living room, rocking baby Dylan on her knee, trying her best to get him off to sleep. “Hey”, Abi greeted her mum, before saying “Put the kettle on, I’ll be there in a minute.”

Sam placed her keys on the side table in the hallway, before making her way into the kitchen and clicking the on switch on the kettle.

A few moments later, Abi entered to find her mum sat staring into space at the kitchen table. “How’s Phil?” she asked, genuinely concerned. Despite his somewhat, lets say mischievous, nature, Abi had always been grateful for the way Phil had supported her mum through her whole abduction by Hugh Wallis. She wasn’t sure how her mum would have coped, or even if she’d ever have seen sense, if Phil hadn’t been there for Sam.

“He’ll be fine” Sam said more confidently than she felt. She had already broken down once too many times that day, and she made a promise to herself, and to Phil, right there, that she wouldn’t cry again, unless the unspeakable happened and Phil was convicted. She vowed she would be strong; she had to be, for herself, but more importantly, for Phil.

The next morning, Sam was up bright and early. She hadn’t really been expecting to sleep all that well and had only gone upstairs to rest her eyes. 8 hours later she had woken up to find it was morning.

Guess that’s what staying up for 36 hours does to you, she thought to herself.

She was desperate to get to the station and see how Phil was doing, but remembered her promise she had made last night and intended to keep it. She had let her vulnerable side show more than usual over the past couple of days, and while she had a good enough reason, she realised that the best way she could help Phil was to do her job professionally, get the results he needed, but more importantly, be there for him, be strong when he needed her.

When she reached he station about an hour later, she went straight up to DCI Meadows office, where she stood outside and waited for an invite. After a few moments of silence, she pushed open to door to reveal an empty office. It suddenly occurred to her that she hadn’t seen anyone from CID on her way up to the office. Granted, she had been in the building less than 10 minutes, but she hadn’t seen anyone, except for a couple of uniformed officers downstairs by the coffee machine.

Weird, she thought, as she closed the office door. As she turned back towards CID she bumped into someone. She was just muttering her apologies, when she looked up to find Phil staring back down at her.

“Phil”, she exclaimed, unable to keep all her joy and surprise out of her voice, as she leaped up to hug him, arms around neck and legs around him waist.

Somehow, he had managed to stay standing, and now Phil smiled an insanely wide grin and stroked her back with one hand, while trying to keep hold her with the other.

“For such a little person, you aint half heavy”, Phil teased, lowering her back down to the floor.

Sam smacked him playfully on the arm, “Oi.” But she was too happy to even shout at him. Instead, she said, “Not that I’m not thrilled to see you up here Phil, but I don’t understand. What happened?”

Phil put his arm around her, leading her towards CID, as he explained, “Smithy got a confession. One of the inmates, Smithy’s mate apparently, the only one who didn’t have an alibi. Smithy told the DCI he didn’t think he could be him, because he was getting parole in a couple of days. He’s got a little boy apparently. Anyway, apparently, he had a history with Johnson, but he wouldn’t help Johnson out around the prison, you know, stamping his authority and whatever. Johnson had his family threatened on the outside. He just went crazy when he found out the other day. He told Johnson he was willing to run errands for him, and when he showed up at the showers, he went mad, stabbing him. He said he heard me coming, wiped the knife and stood against the back wall. Obviously, when I went in, I was facing Johnson, not expecting anyone else to be there and as I was approaching Johnson, he legged it back to his cell, with no-one paying him much attention between the fight that was already happening and me shouting for help.”

Sam had listened to the whole account with wide eyes, but now as they reached the doors to CID, she stood on her tip toes to kiss him lightly on the lips. “So, you’ve been fully cleared?” she just wanted to make sure.

Phil nodded before pushing open the doors to the sound of a tremendous cheer. Everyone in CID was cheering as Phil walked in, followed closely by Sa,.

“Alright Sarge?” Jo asked with a smile.

“I am now I have you to look at again”, he remarked with a wink.

“Good to see some things don’t change”, Jo teased, with a slap to the arm, as she walked past.

“Fancy a drink?” Mickey asked, “I think there’s an overdue celebration.”

“Definitely”, Zain agreed, from across the room.

Phil looked behind him as Sam with a little twinkle in his eye. “What?” she mouthed to him, before he turned back around to face everyone.

“Thanks guys”, he said, “but in that case, I want to make it a double celebration.”

“What do you mean?” Jo asked, speaking for everyone else in the room, who looked just as confused.

He turned and linked his arm around Sam’s waist, pulling her forward a couple of steps so she stood next to him. He leaned down to plant a long, lingering kiss on her lips, for everyone to see.

There was more cheering and yells of “Get in there”, as Sam and Phil became totally absorbed by one another.
