Coronation Street has been cleared of any misconduct by TV watchdog Ofcom following complaints after an Asian character used the term "poor white trash".

More than 500 viewers rang in to complain when single mother Sunita (played by Shobna Gulati) reprimanded her brother Jayesh for calling her friends "poor white trash".

However, Ofcom moved to dismiss the furore arising from the episode, which was aired on January 16.

A spokesperson for Ofcom said: "While the term 'white trash' has obvious racist overtones, it can also be used in context to describe those from a low socio-economic group.

"By portraying them in a dramatic form the programme took a legitimate approach to exploring such matters
