EXCLUSIVE: THE KEND OF CORRIE MIKE
EXCLUSIVE He dies in arms of rival Barlow
By Lara Gould Tv Reporter
CORONATION Street's Mike Baldwin is to die in the arms of his arch-rival Ken Barlow.

The touching scene, to be shown in April, will mark the end of a 20-year feud started when ladies man Mike had an affair with Ken's wife Deidre.

An insider said: "Mike's exit will go down in Corrie history. It really is the end of an era. Mike has been a massive part of the Street for such a long time that this is a fitting send-off. Viewers are going to be hooked."

Fans of the soap have seen once-active factory boss Mike battle the brain-wasting disease Alzheimer's for the past year. The source said: "Mike starts to go downhill fast. He's struggling to recognise even his oldest friends.

"At one point he is found walking around in the rain and is taken to hospital with pneumonia. But he goes off again and Ken finds him slumped on the steps of his knicker factory.

"Seeing he's in trouble, Ken cradles Mike in his arms and they start talking about the old times. Ken calls an ambulance but it's too late and he dies before they arrive."

Actor Johnny Briggs, 70 last year, refused to sign another £200,000-a-year contract, telling bosses: "I can't go on forever."

Romeo Mike arrived in the Street in 1976 as boyfriend of former Rovers landlady Bet Lynch. He fell for single mum Deidre in 1979 and they dated for two years before she wed Ken, played by William Roache. Two years later Mike and Deidre rekindled their romance - and the two men first came to blows when Ken uncovered the affair.

Mike went on to wed FOUR times - Ken's daughter Susan, Jackie Ingram and then golddigger Linda Sykes, who bedded both Mike and his son Mark.

Mike's last wife was businesswoman Alma Sedgewick. They divorced after Mike cheated on her with a prostitute - but Mike later nursed her as she died of cancer. Fans last month saw Mike pop the question to widow Penny King. He stormed out after being rejected - but later forgot he'd proposed.

A source said: "Seeing Mike forgetting his proposal bought home the extent of his illness. He has become a shell of the man he once was. But Street bosses felt it was important to show what a degenerative illness can do.

"And they promise his send-off will be fitting for such a popular and long-serving character."

Mike Baldwin leaves the Street

Veteran Coronation Street cast member Johnny Briggs has filmed his final scenes for the hit ITV1 show.

The cast were reportedly in tears as Johnny said his goodbyes for the last time .

His character, Mike Baldwin, has been suffering from rapidly progressing Alzheimers disease and things recently got worse when his family had to bring him back from Spain after a fall.

The character is due to bow out in some highly emotional scenes. He will finally succumb to a heart attack in the arms of long term rival Ken Barlow.

Johnny, 70, was presented with parting gifts by the cast and crew, including fine wines and a special book which commemorates his time on the show.

He is said to be looking forward to retirement, spending time with his large family and getting in a couple of rounds of golf.

I didnt think much of this exit

for such a soap legend this was a preety dull ending...

the script was pretty lame...why talk about deidre and the affair from years back? his final words could have been far better than that

as ritchie says black credits would have been more fetching...and i personally would have prefeered emotional music in oppose to silence (julias theme in eastenders)

it is sad to see Mike dead...a soap legend...forever remembered

they decided to do that because that was a huge storyline didnt they? and the fact he died in kens arms so it was obvious they'd choose somethign to do with ken/dierdre/mike

ye i agree with that i mean they had the build up ie mike going out of hospital but they could have made his death a bit longer it just seemed like they squezzed it in in the last 3 mins

naturally it was a big storyline but we dont need him to mention it for us to regonise the irony of him dying in kens arms...

we could have had an emotional driven script... "Im in my prime...im scared ken...i dont want to die... not me...im mike baldwin" etc etc...as appose to the tripe he was spurting out..

dont ask me but its just like i have a strong feeling it could have been a lot better

as the tabloids have pointed out he wasnt meant to die until next christmas...hes only been killed off so corrie can try and win the soap awards and the baftas... as they know they have strong competion from eastenders this year

That's not actually true BB. This story originated from the very nasty Wanadoo newspages. Johnny Briggs decided to leave early due to marriage problems. It's a bit messy at the moment in his life and he wanted to leave early to try and sort out the aftermath. Corrie bosses wanted him to stay until July but he decided to leave three months early.

i think deidri ( not sure if thats how its spelt) should have been there when he actually died, after all that they had been through. I was glad that the originals were there though, Ken, Rita, Emily. But i dont think it was right Danny was there, he had only just come inot Mikes life. Deidri would have been better to be there, or at least Adam, Adam had been part of his life longer than Danny had.
