i dont really know as in a way they should but then they could use them in the wrong way and get away with it. I mean look what happened to that brazilian man in London after the bombings, but then again they should so ther is not a repeat of the terrible tragedy where the police woman was shot.

when the police officer is shot like that i dont know what having there own gun would acheive. I mean its highly unlikely its going to protect you is it.

Another one? I am not sure still if having a gun would protect officers. would it not do more harm than good?

No they shouldnt. having a gun wouldnt protect them. wouldnt they cause more deaths of civilians by shooting them when things get tense?

Had the police been armed then this thug may have thought twice before shooting her. Had he still shot her then her colleague could at least have returned fire. This is 2006 folks. We no longer live in the era of Dixon of Dock Green.

Police are armed in the States and their gun crime is the highest in the world.

I would prefer tougher penalties on gun crime. A gun free society is a safer society.

I personally think no they shouldn't be armed - 2 wrongs don't make a right - shooting someone because they think a leg of a table is a gun is wrong, as NB says, America has an extremely high gun crime rate yet their police is armed.

I want my children to grow up in a society without all officers armed, just those that are fully trained in the use of the weapons. Taking the decision to shoot someone, is not one to be taken lightly. I dont think the police themselves want to be armed either, certainly my brother in law who is an officer, doesnt.

Unfortunately the chances of a gun free society will probably never exist. Until such a Utopia is achieved the our police officers should have the means to protect themselves and those whom it is their duty to protect.

Police are armed in many other countries which have a very low incidence of gun crime.

How then do you expect police officers to deal with Armed Robbery, hijackings, terrorism, protection of V.I.P.s.

Imagine a group of armed robbers coming out of your local Nat West who would they stop for a. A policeman armed with a truncheon

or b. a policeman armed with a Heckler & Koch Mp5 :ninja:

I totally agree with what Alan says, I think a cop could stop some real bad crimes with a gun, a truncheon will only do so much , but saying that, I am also an American, every cop in the USA is armed to the teeth.:ninja:

i think they all have the right to !. i mean if they can get shot and killed out on there job and have now protection it makes them an easy target for the trouble makers. if they were all armed they would have the backup they needed when in trouble and they dont always have to use the guns if the person being arrested gets too scared and gives up anyways !. if they have guns why cant a police officer have one to protect themselfs and do there job?
