Anyone got any tips for how i can get my five year old to eat vegetables? He loves potatoes and gravy but I can get him to eat anything else except for that or chips, nuggets, smilies, and other "junk food". I made stew today and was helping him to eat it and when he put parsnip in his mouth he was acctually gagging, and no it wasnt my cooking! :)

Hi Myra, think you can handle some American advice on cooking?? have you tried home made tacos ?? and let your child put what ever he wants on it ? Have you tried toasting pita bread, slicing them up and stuffing it with shredded cheese? What about French toast ?? and give him a few different syrups to dip it in ??? My son was a picky eater ( he is now a daddy with a son of his own) I some times let him choose things in the grocery store ,he loved hot dogs ( don't know if you have those in the UK ) he also loved cocktail weiners ( I had small pots of mustard, catsup, barbque sauce for him to dip his little meats in)
If you want more ideas,, just let me know :D JJ

He loves Hot Dogs and im definatley gonna try the other ideas Jodi :), I'm just really scared he isnt getting enough vegetables, and theres warnings everywhere about making sure your kids have 5 portions of fruit or vegetables a day and about the salt in their foods I just want to make eating healthier more fun for him :( He choked on a carrot once so I dont know if it stems from that? He thinks he's allergic to them now :searchme:

My daughter will eat anything I give her which is good, he's just a lot more picky. If he doesnt like the look of something he will not eat it.

Myra - my eldest eats everything on his plate, my 3 yr old wont touch anything but meat and fruit

I have spoken to my Health Visitor and doctor about it, and they have said not to worry - if you force it it makes it worse as long as he is have some sort of fruit and some meat of some kind, he should be fine

Maybe you could try giving him cottage pie with other veg such as peas or carrots mixed in which are hidden by the other food or perhaps to make sure he has his five a day give him orange juice as a drink and beans to go with his nuggets etc just some suggestions.

Also, look out for special kids food in the supermarket. In asda, they do their own brand of food especially for kids, so even pizza's and stuff are made healthier by watching the salt etc. Bernard Matthews also do that.

They also manage to hide veg in some of the things! And if your doing something like a burger, put lots of salad stuff on it like you get from a takeawy, they tend not to notice.

And as Lushlooke says, give him orange juice / beans, all which count towards it. Also, fruit (such as peaches) with ice cream for pudding, or you can actually get fruit mixed with jelly, or little fruit pots from the supermarket.

My son loved it when I put banana slices in his jelly ( us americans call it jello) i got the sugar free type ( he was hyper enough with out all the added sugar)
also fruit in porriage ( we call it oatmeal) some times you have to trick these kids into eating,, ahhhhhhh another thing..fruit smoothies,, let the kids pick out a fruit then let them add it to the blender , gets them excited to try something THEY made..

Smoothies are a good one!

Also, my nephew hates cauliflower but eats cauliflower cheese! It also helps the way you present the food, like making a tower from sausages mash and peas. there are also great kids cookbooks so you can cook dinner together.

what i heard is that you had to do each part slowly- let them play with the food first- so you have carrots and other vegetables in a bowl and he just play with it and than slowly make him put it in his mouth

My niece will not eat any vegetables.. she will gag and get sick if you try to give her anything but my sister leaves veg there and sometimes she will pick little bits of it.. if you are worried about the 5 portions, you can get them into him another way via drinks and stuff

Thx for all your advice guys, that jelly with bananas sounds yummy  i'm gonna get him some of those little drinks that are concentrated veg and fruit juices and try him with them and then try not to force too much on him, my friend told me she never ate any vegetables when she was a kid and was forced to try them one day.. now she never eats them so i'm not gonna push it.
