Hi everyone I'm back after a month off from writing I'm back and rearing to go with my new script. Since the 'Keeping' scripts were so popular i have decided to do one more script using my character Faith Angela Rickman. In this script she will be 16 and the story will have a very different feel to it.

If you havent read the other stories they can be found here:

Keeping the Faith:http://www.soapboards.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=11479
Keeping it in the family: http://www.soapboards.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=17631

Ok hi again everyone it feels good to be writing again although i think tha after this script i am going to have to put faith in the cupboard, I think i might be getting addicted to her. This really has to be the last one. lol :) Here's the first part. All replies good and bad welcome.

Part 1

Faith Angela Rickman woke with a start. She rubbed her eyes and shook her head trying to clear it of the nightmare she had just had. She swung her legs out of bed and shivered, glancing at her clock realised it was time to go anyway. 3 am thats what she had decided.
She looked over to the sleeping form of her sister Alyss. Alyss was fourteen nearly fifteen and the most precious thing in Faiths world. Faith sighed and stood perfectly still as Alyss rolled over, letting her long plait if hair snake its way across her chest. As she watched her sleepig Faith came so close to changing her mind but it was too late. Things had gone to far for her to change her mind now. She couldnt stay.
She brushed her blonde hair and let it fall into its natural ringlets before pulling on an old pair of jeans and tugging a pink t-shirt over her head. She knelt on the floor and pulled our her already full rucksack. She placed a creamy coloured envelope on her sisters bedside table and slipped out of the bedroom door.
She tiptoed down the landing and peered into her brothers room. Ten year old Ryan and six year old Toby were fast asleep. Their room was a swirl of blue remenicent of Ryans thomas the tank engine days. Ryan had placed his collection of toy soldiers by his bed. Faith blinked hard. He was so much like their father. Faith glanced over to Toby and gave a wistful smile befor eleaving the room and walking down the hall to her other sisters room.
Six year old Lillys room was as far from boyish as it could be with its bright pink walls and a wall of teddies and dolls. Faith walked into the room and kissed her sister lightly on the cheek. Lillys eyes fluttered open and Faiths heart skipped a beat.

Lilly: Faith, what time is it?
Faith: Its very late Lils so you have to go to sleep ok and I'll see you in the morning.
Lilly: What are you doing in my room?

Faith looked round for and excuse before snatching up one of the dolls that lay forgotten underneath Lillys bed.

Faith: I was just looking for this

She waved the doll close to Lillys face. Lillys eyelids drooped

Faith: Now come on go to sleep

Faith tucked her in and kissed her again before returning to the safety of the hall. Shuffing the doll harshly into her bag she let out the breath she had been holding and walked towards the stairs. She passed her parents bedroom but couldnt go in. She couldnt sya goodbye, she just couldnt.
She hurried down the stairs, opened the front door and walked out onto the street. The harsh night air bit at her face as she pulled her scarf tightly around herself and headed down the road. She didnt look back not once. She loved them all but she couldnt stay, not now. It was different, they were different, they meant different things. Nothing would ever be the same again, not without him but life went on and her life wasnt there. They would carry on but without her. Life would go on, but without Faith.

Thanks for the replies guys glad to know you still like Faith and that you've not got sick of her lol. As for your questions all will be revealed in time. Here's the next part.

Part 2

Faith stared out of the window of the train and watched as a blur of darkness rushed by, disrupted by the occasional flicker of light. Faiths watch read 4:10 am and most of the people in her compartment were asleep. The journey from her house to the train station had been short and Faith was glad of it. She was so mixed up inside. Part of her wanted to jump of the train at the next stop and get home as fast as she could, no one need ever know she was gone. The other part wanted to train to go on forever, the other part needed to be as far away from walford as possible. Nothing could ever be ok any more, not there.
She train halted abruptly at the next stop and the doors slid open letting several people onboard. People walked this way and that as they tried to find a seat. Faith watched as a boy slightly older than her, probably about eighteen, slipped into her compartment. Faith let her eyes dart around quickly but soon came to the same conclusion as the boy. The only free seat was next to her. The boy walked forward and she looked at him more closely. He was tall with short brown hair and sparkling green eyes. A wave of familiarity washed over Faith and she shivered, looking away for a moment. The boy walked over to her and leant forward to talk quietly to her.

: Hi err is this seat taken?

Faith thought at the time what a stupid question it was. Of course the seat was empty.

Faith: No you can sit there.

Faith turned away and hugged her bag to her chest but it seemed the boy wanted to make conversation.

:Hi I'm David

Faith looked at him. Why was he talking to her?

Faith: I'm...

She thought about giving a false name but decided to be honest.

Faith: Hi, I'm Faith
David: Faith? Thats a nice name
Faith: Davids not so bad either

He gave a little snort fo dissaproval towards his own name and Faith smiled.

David: So where's a pretty thing like you going on a night like this.

Faith smiled again at his directness, she liked it and chose to tell the truth again.

Faith: Honestly, I dont really know. I'm following the line to Brighton and then...who knows?
David: Brighton? Really? That makes two of us. I've got friends there. We could probably put you up for a few nights if you like?

Faith declined his offer but he told her to think about it.

David: So, if you dont mind me asking, how old are you?
Faith: Seventeen, you?

The lie slipped from her lips easier than anything else she had said so far. Seventeen. It was only sixteen months out and Faith had always seemed grown up for her age, she knew she could get away with it, after all she needed to. People never seemed to be very happy at the thought of a fifteen year old girl walking the streets on her own. Besides she liked David, and when he revealed that she was right and he was eighteen she knew that if she wanted to keep talking to him then the truth was not an option. He was being friendly and right now she needed all the friends she could get.
Everything had changed and she couldnt go home, not now. She'd lost everything that was important to her. She'd lost her friends, she'd lost her family, they hated her, she was failing at school, and the guilt...that was the worst thing. She'd lost one of the most important people in her life and it was all her fault...she'd lost her dad and it was all her fault.

Part 3

Sharon was jolted out of her sleep as Alyss shook her hard. Her eyes swept open and she instantly knew something was wrong. Alyss had tears in her eyes and was waving a piece of paper in her mothers face. There was an eerie silence in the air that could instantly be associated with bad news.

Sharon: Alyss, what is it? Its five in the morning.

Alyss scrubbed her face hard and sniffed.

Alyss: Its Faith

Sharons heart sank

Sharon: What is it? Whats she done?
Alyss: She's gone mum, she's run away. She thinks its all her fault.

Alyss started to sob slowly again and handed Sharon the neatly written note. Sharon stared at her daughters loopy handwriting for a moment before reading the words. The note read:

To mum, Ally and everyone

I've gone and I dont know how long it will be until i come back, maybe never.
I love you all but I cant stay. Things are so hard, so difficult and I hate it.
I hate the way things have changed and I hate the way its all my fault.
I know you all blame me for dad. You say it wasnt my fault but I can hear the
doubt in your voices. Seeing you all, Mum, Ally, Ryan and the twins and knowing...
knowing that you all miss him so much, I cant handle that. Its important that you all
know how much I love you and I dont want you to forget about me but for know its best
that I'm gone so please dont try to find me because you wont, I'm going far away.

Love you all

Faith

Sharon hugged Alyss tight and drew her up onto the bed as she sobbed. Soon the others would wake up and Sharon would have to explain why their sister wasnt there. It would be another day she had to fight through, another day she struggled to survive. Everyday was like that at the moment and it would be a lie to sya that Sharon couldnt help but blame Faith a little. She didnt know what happened that night, no one did, no one that is except Faith and she had been too distant, too traumatised to breath a word of it to anyone since. Thats what sharon hated, it was the not knowing that hurt the most. She hated that Faith wouldnt tell her but then she hated herself for not reasurring Faith that it wasnt her fault. The only thing is Sharon wasnt sure herself just who's fault it was and sharon couldnt help but think that if it wasnt Faiths fault then who was to blame for her husbands death.

Faith and David got off the train as it reached the last stop. I was light now but Faith had no idea of the time. Faith threw her bag over her shoulder and glanced sideways towards David. He looked her in the eye and smile.

David: Coming?
Faith: Huh?
David: Its not like you've got anywhere else to go is it
Faith: I might have
David: Oh come on drop the act, I know you're running away
Faith: What...no...I'm...what makes you say that?
David: You only have one bag, runnaways travel light. People on holiday have more bags.
Faith: You only have one bag does that make you a runaway too?
David: I'm what you might call a permanent runaway the point is I caught you out.

Faith looked at her feet

David: If there's one thing I know about runaways its that they cover their backs so come on, whats your real name and how old are you really?

Faith sighed. Busted!

Faith:My name really is Faith, Faith Angela
David: And your age?

She hesitated but answered anyway

Faith: Fifteen

Her voice was small and riddled with embaressment. David didnt say anything though, he just sort looked at her and his mouth twitched

David: So are you coming or not, rooms still on offer

Faith looked at him and smiled.

Faith: Sure, why not
David: Great follow me

David turned on his heel and walked away from the platform with Faith at his side.

Faith: David?
David: Yeah?
Faith: Thanks
David: Dont mention it
Faith: David?
David: Yeah?
Faith: About why I ran away...
David: Dont worry I wont ask
Faith: David?
David: Yes Faith?!
Faith: I'm nearly sixteen

David just laughed and Faith smiled. Maybe leaving wasnt going to be so hard after all

Part 5

It turned out the house that David shared with his friends was half way across town. Faith wished they could have gotten the bus, she could have paid, but she didnt say anything, it was probably best that no one knew about the fifty pounds she had stuffed in her bag besides she needed the excersise and enjoyed the scenery.
When at last David said they were finally there Faith looked up to come face to face with a large terraced house. It wasnt in the best part of town but it didnt seem awful either. Faith followed David through the front door and into the living room where three other boys and a girl were sat talking, they all looked around Davids age. David introduced them as Faith smiled politely and flicked her ringlets from her face.
Steve was short but well built and had spiked blonde hair. He was nineteen nearly twenty and the oldest of the group. He seemed to be the leader of the gang but was polite enough and smiled at Faith, holding out his hand for her to shake. You could teel he was one of these people who had gone all their lives being told how good loking they were.
Next was Mike. He seemed to be the live wire, the extremest of the group. He was eighteen and Mike's best friend. He had long black hair that was dotted with streaks of red. Faith supposed he thought he looked cool but...well it just wasnt her thing. said a quick hello before turning to the next person.
Jamie was the quietest. He blinked at Faith with his bluer than blue eyes before looking away to stare absently out of the window. He was sixteen and had what could be described as rouged good looks with brown hair and a slight stubble. Not Faiths cup of tea but who knows maybe he had a sparkling personality. He was seventeen, just and Davids younger brother. David said he wasnt that rude all the time.
Faith turned to the girl and gazed in awe. Selene was one of the most beautiful people Faith had ever seen. She had waist length blach hair and dark grey eyes, her lips were stained red and she had milky pale skin to envy Faiths own. She was captivating. You couldnt look at her and not want to like her. She was eighteen and as far as Faith could tell the only girl in the group, she was also Sheve's girlfriend.

Introductions over...

David: This is Faith, She's gonna be staying with us for a while if thats ok with everyone.

David slid his hand round Faiths waist. She felt uncomfortable but wasnt exactly bothered. She liked him. If he asked her she wouldnt say no to being his girlfriend.

Selene: Its fine by me, it'll be nice having another girl around the place.
Mike: Whatever, its cool by me

Jamie snapped out of his daydream and looked at Faith directly

Jamie: I dont mind if you stay

Steve stood up

Steve: David, mind if I have a word.

He walked past Faith into the kitchen and David followed. The others looked at Faith.

Selene: Hey sit down, we dont bite
Faith: Thanks
Selene: Dont worry, he just needs to make sure little davy knows who's boss. We dont let just anyone stay here you know.

She gave a little laugh and Faith smiled nervously

Selene: Hey cheer up will ya. If you're gonna live here you've got to learn to have some fun.

Selene smiled again and Faith smiled back with ease this time. Selene was right, it was time she had some fun. Things had been too hard lately and she couldnt remember the last time she enjoyed herself. Yes she did, but that was before IT happened and Faith would rather not think about that.

Part 6

The next few days went by in a blur as Faith settled in at her new home in brighton, meanwhile back in Walford things were not as great. Sharon had phoned the police who had come swiftly and promptly before telling her that as Faith was nearly sixteen there was little the could do. Sharon spoke to her friends, no one had any idea where she was and Alyss put up posters but no one ever called in reply to them. Sharon struggled to hold it together. Ryan, Toby and Lilly constantly asked where there sister was and the increasing pressure on her meant that Sharon had very little time for her other children. Pauline became her rock, her shoulder to cry on:

Sharon: I just dont know what to do
Pauline: Dont worry dear she'll come home
Sharon: But thats just it Paul' I dont know if she will, so much has happened
Pauline: Like Dennis you mean

There was a silence as Sharon seemed to drift into her own little world.

Sharon: I loved him so much you know, I mean we had our problems, what couple doesnt but I'll never stop loving him and I hate that I wasnt there when it happened...I hate that she was.

Pauline gave a sharp intake of breath and breathed out slowly.

Pauline: Sharon you cant think like that. It wasnt Faiths fault and I bet you anything she wishes she wasnt there. You're angry that you weren't there but think what she's going through because she was there.

Sharon looked down at the mug in her hands.

Sharon: I just miss him so much. It shouldnt have ended like that. I just cant help thinking that if I was there instead of her then things could have been so different.
Pauline: And what makes you think that, it was an accident Sharon there was nothing anyone could have done.
Sharon: But thats just it isnt it, we dont know if it was and accident, no one knows, no one but her and she isnt telling anyone.
Pauline: Sharon please you have to stop thinking like this. The coroner said he drowned, there was nothing you could have done.
Sharon: Yeah but no one knows how it happened do they? He wasnt even anywhere near water when they found him, he was in the middle of no where and the only person with him was her, what am I supposed to think?
Pauline: Sharon she was nearly unconsious when they found them and it was too late for him. It could have been anything, he could have knocked his head and drowned in a puddle for all we know, you have to stop blaming her.

Sharon started to cry

Sharon: I cant pauline, and I hate that I blame her but I do.
Pauline: But you have to.
Sharon: I cant, its not knowing, thats the worst thing. She knows what happened and she wont tell me.
Pauline: How do you know she knows, like I said she was neary unconsious herself, lying in the mud and soaked to the skin. She might not know anything, it probably could have just as easily been her.

Sharon took a deep breath and looked her in the eyes

Sharon: Exept it wasnt her that died was it. Lets look at the facts Pauline. They went off on a little father daughter trip and he drowned, the coroner said in at least a foot of water, they were found in the middle of the countryside, miles away from where they were supposed to be. He...he...he was already dead and she was unconsious laying next to him. Then for at least two months afterwards she doest say a word to anyone and now six months later she still wont tell anyone what happened, and you think she doesnt know anything. I'm sorry Pauline I love her, she's my daughter but she knows something and right now I just want her to come home and tell me what it is

Hi thanks for the replies. Can you see already how this is very different from the other three scripts. Faith isnt the little girl we all know and love anymore. She's almost an adult and definatly not the innocent she's always been portrayed to be. The big question is, is Dennis's death her fault?

Part 7

Faith: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Faith woke up drenched in sweat and shaking with fear. It had happened again, she'd had that dream. She flicked on her bedside lamp and looked around to wake herself up. She had only been at the house for four days but already her room had become her sanctuary. There was nothing special about it, the walls were a dirty cream colour and the only furniture was her bed and a chest of drawers. Her matress was lumpy and the curtains moth-eaten but Faith didnt care. This was her room, it belonged to her and while she was there no one could tell her off, no one could hurt hurt, upset her.
The day after she moved in Faith asked Selene why the room had been empty in the first place. After all it was a large room in the middle of town in a not too bad area. Surely there were thousands of students from the nearby university just dying to get a place like this.
Selene told her that the room had been occupied by a girl called Charlotte but that she went away. Faith wanted to know more but Selene seemed bitter about the parting and Faith didnt want to push her. However Faith often thought about the mysterious Charlotte and what she might be doing, where she might be living, what she did whilst she was there in her room. It was silly really, she didnt know anything about her. She didnt know what she looked like, how old she was, where she was from, why she lived there in the first place...but she still thought of her, it was kind of comforting and to Faith Charlotte became a bit like a long lost friend, although a friend she had never met and probably never would meet.
That night however Faiths thoughts were on her dream. She sta up in her bed panting and tried to cement the images into her mind, but it was no use, they were gone. She knew everything was angry with her for not telling them what had happened but the truth was she wasnt sure she even knew. Her memory of that day had become so patchy and what she did remember scared her. She no longer knew whether she was innocent or not. What if they were right, what if it was all her fault?
There was knock at the door. She pulled her bed sheets around her and tugged at the t shirt selene had lent her in the place of pyjamas.

Faith: Come in

It was Jamie, Faith groaned inwardly

Faith: Err hi

Jamie shuffled awkwardly near her doorway

Jamie: Are you ok? I heard you scream
Faith: Really? I screamed?

Faith twisted her bed sheets in her hands. These dreams were starting to get out of hand...if only she could remember them.

Jamie: Yeah, you sounded really upset or scared or something.

Jamie scratched his head and yawned.

Faith: Sorry, bad dream. Did I say anything?
Jamie: How should I know, you woke me up
Faith: Sorry I...

Another figure walked through the door, it was David.

David: What you doin Jamie, its two in the morning for christs sake.
Jamie: I heard her scream I just thought I'd better...
David: Yeah well you can go now, go on leave her alone. The last thing she needs is you bugging her.
Jamie: Yeah whatever

Jamie threw a quick glance in Faiths direction and traipsed out of the room. David walked further in and sat at the end of Faiths bed. She suddenly felt very self consious. Her hair was tied up in a messy mass of knotted ringlets and there was sleep in her eyes. She pulled the covers even further up towards her chin to cover the creamy skin revealed by the t-shirt she was wearing. David laughed at her.

David: Dont worry, I'm not that kind of guy
Faith: And what kind of guy are you
David: Not one who takes advantage if thats what your thinking although I must admit...you are cute
Faith: Not so bad yourself
David: Get some sleep Faith. I'll see you in the morning.

He walked towards the door. Before stopping and looking her up and down as she relinquished her hold on the covers.

David: Although I must say Faith, if you ever did want me to be that kind of guy, I wouldnt say no.

He walked out of the door with a seductive smile on his face leaving Faith both confused and exhilerated. Did David fancy her?

Hi thanks for the replies. I have at least the next twenty parts planned so looks like this script will be just as long as its prequels. I'm aiming for about 35 parts. Here's the next part

Part 8

The next day David and Faith set off into the town. He had promised to show her the sights and she needed to buy some new clothes since she didnt even have pyjamas. Faiths first stop was to the cash machine. For now money wasnt an issue, she had at least £1000 in her savings account that her parents had set up for her when she was born. She withdrew £100 and her and David hit the shops.
the first things she bought were essentials like underwear and the all important pyjamas. Once they were out the way she could have some fun. She walked calmly into the highstreet shop with David tagging along behind her. She quickly pulled a handful of item off the rail before dashing into the changing rooms. David sat down outside, smiled and sighed. Girls!

^^^^^^^

Faith: So what do you think?

David looked up as Faith emerged from the changing rooms for the third time waiting for his verdict on her clothes. She was wearing a pretty white sun dress with daisy detail and a lemon yellow jacket.

Faith: Is the jacket too much?
David: No its perfect

David watche dthe may her blonde ringlets curled their way around her neck, falling onto the top of the jacket

David: Really you look great
Faith: Thanks
David: Your welcome, got much more to try on?
Faith: Three more, wait there

Faith dashed back into the changing rooms emerging ten minutes later wearing black trousers with a fluffy black jumper. David couldnt help but coment on how cute she looked and how pale it made her skin look. She blushed deeply, turning her skin a flushed shade of pink before dashing back into the changing rooms to try on her remaining outfits.
They emerged from the shop quarter of an hour later with David carrying two bags of clothes. Faith said she could carry them herself but David wouldnt hear of it. They walked to the park and David dissapeared to get icecreams. Faith didnt understand it, it was only february but it felt like the middle of summer. David came back and handed her her icecream. Neither spoke but she was very concious of the fact that her was watching her everymove. She broke the silence

Faith: Did you mean what you said earlier about me looking nice?
David: Of course I did. You're a very pretty girl Faith Angela.

She blushed and giggled slightly at the sound ofher middle name.

Faith: Like I said before you're not so bad yourself

David looked at her.

David: You have icecream on your face

She couldnt feel it, she knew she didnt.

Faith: Really?
David: Yes really

He moved his hand to her face, leaning forward in te process and brushed his fingers across her cheek before brushing his thumb across her lips and moving in for a kiss. She didnt object, infact she dropped her bags and let her arms wind round his kneck in a willing embrace as he kissed her softly. The icecreams were left to for just a sticky puddle on the floor...

Part 9

Sharon sat down in the chair and pulled her knees to her chest sobbing. It was the first time she'd been alone in nearly two days and she had to let it all out. It had been nearly a week since Faith had gone missing and Sharon still had no idea where she was. The twins were spending the night at Paulines, Ryan was at a friends house and Alyss was out putting up more posters although she would be back later. That was the time Sharon hated most, when she was alone with Alyss. She knew how hard this all must be for Alyss but Sharon found is so hard to comfort her it was easier to just avoid her.
Sharon felt so lost. She glanced at a photo of Dennis that was placed in the center of the mantle piece. It had been taken the day Alyss was born. He had baby Alyss in one arm and was holding a smiling Faith on his hip. His face was beaming, he was so happy. Sharon felt more tears seep from her eyes and brushed them away.
She jumped when she heard the phone and sniffed, clearing her throat she picked up the handset.

Sharon: Hello?
?: Err hi is that Mrs Rickman?
Sharon: Yes who's calling?
?: Hi my names Mr Watson, its about your daughter

Sharons heart leapt into her mouth

Sharon: What? What is it?
Mr Watson: Well I dont know if its relevant but I saw the posters and thought you aught to know...
Sharon: Yes...?
Mr Watson: I saw your daughter on the night she dissapeared, or at least I think it was her. The girl I saw matches the description and photograph.
Sharon: Where did you see her?
Mr Watson: She got on my train, she was sat with a young boy but it didnt seem like she knew him.

Sharon was confused and needed to know more. A boy?

Sharon: Where did she get off?
Mr Watson: Thats the thing, I dont know. I got off before her, I only saw the posters yesterday. All I can say is that there weren't too many more stops left and Brighton was the last stop, I can only assume she was going there. Sorry I couldnt have been of more help.
Sharon: Oh no you've been very helpful, thankyou. Thankyou very much.

Sharon put the phone down before picking it up again and dialling the number for Alyss's mobile. Sharon was fired up with a new determination. She was going to find her daughter and Brighton was a good place to start looking.

Part 10

Faith couldnt believe it when her and David kissed. It was like an out of body experience. She'd never really been into boys before. All the boys she knew either thought she was weird or were complete losers. Faith had always been that rapped up in everything else going on in her life that boys always came second...or third...or ninth...or somewhere down the way list. Most of the boys at school gave her a wide bearth and all assumed that she'd be a nightmare to date. After all she might be good looking but who wants to date a girl who's put two men in prison, had three near death experiences, spends most of her time with her baby sister,is suspected of killing her dad and now has done a runner from home. Faith was not exactly girlfriend material, and normally it didnt bother her, thats why it suprised her so much when she found that she liked David as well as him liking her.
He was smart funny, kind, caring, sensitive, good looking, three years older than Faith and a runaway just like her. He was also a good kisser.
With two couples now living in the house Jamie and Mike spent a lot of time in their rooms while Selene and Steve and Faith and David spent time making out in the living room. It wasnt an exciting way of life but Faith wasnt complaining. She liked David a lot and she wanted him to like her, after all he could soon dump her and go find some girl his own age.
The only thing David wasnt too good at was listening:

Faith had had a really bad day. She'd had a rough night filled with bad dreams and blurred vsions and she's had an even worse day with dizzy spells and spontanious urges to burst out crying. It was after one of the outbursts that David sat with her on the sofa slowly rocking her as she stopped crying.

David: Whats wrong Faith, you've been like this all day?
Faith: Nothing I'm fine
David: You're obviously not fine
Faith: Look it doesnt matter ok, you wouldnt understand.
David: Try me

Faith looked at him. Why couldnt she just tell him? Because there was nothing to tell thats why.

David: This is to do with why you left isnt it

Faith looked at him, she had to say something and opted for a rather diluted version of the truth.

Faith: My dad, he...err...he died
David: Is that it?

Faith knew that had been insensitive but ignored it.

Faith: It was a suspicious death it kinda threw my whole family into turmoil
David: So he was murdered?

Yes YEs YES! Faiths mind screamed out to be heard but she ignored that too

Faith: Thats the thing we dont know,... maybe,... probably...
David: so are there and suspects?

ME ME ME!!!!!!

Faith: No not yet

Faith held her breath as she finished her story and waited for the comforting comment that was bound to come from David any moment.

David: Oh well you'll feel better now its off your chest
Faith: What?
David: What what?
Faith: This kind of thing doesnt just go away
David: Well you cant mope about it forever, it wasnt the end of your life

But it was, her heart screamed. It was

David walked off and Faith was left shaking with anger. At that moment Jamie walked into the room.

Jamie: I err overheard, sorry about your dad

Faith stared at him hard

Faith: Leave me alone Jamie, just leave me alone.

She stormed upto her room to cool off but the damage had been done

Part 11

Faith quickly forgot her arguament with David and later that day eveything was alright again. It wasnt until later that night that things really took a turn for the worse.
Faith had been in her room for two hours after another dizzy spell had given her a migraine. She layed on her bed and stared up at the ceiling. She was bored but she also knew that if she tried to get up her knees would give way and she'd end up on the floor again.
Faiths thoughts yet again turned to Charlotte, the friend who she'd never even met. Yet again she marvelled at how strange it was that she should feel so intrigued and so close to a person she didnt even know. The only thing she knew they had in common was that at one point in thier lives they had both occupied this room, this house, this bed. Faith wondered who else had shared the house with Charlotte, she wondered if she'd had a boyfriend and wondered why she was here in the first place. She imaged Charlotte at her own age although she knew that she must be older now. She imagined the friends she must have had and the things she must of done. Faith imagined Charlottes family and she imagined what Charlotte must be doing at that exact moment. Finally, as she wriggled into the bed sheets and let sleep consume her Faith wondered if when Charlotte had slept in the same sheets, she'd had nightmares too...

^^^^^^^

Faith awoke several hours later to find that it was dark outside and the streetlights had been turned on to spread their yellow glow into the night sky. She felt much better and as she slipped out of her room and onto the landing she almost felt her old self...almost.
She stopped abruptly as she heard loud voices that she didnt recognise coming from the living room. She heard a creek behind her and whirled round to see Jamie stood at his bedroom door. He looked sad and concerned.

Jamie: Dont go down there Faith, please, stay up here. Its better that way.

Faith raised an eyebrow and scoffed at Jamie before marching confidently down the stairs and into the living room. The room was full of people. People and smoke. The heavy cloud of smoke dazed her senses and was like nothing she'd ever smelt before. She looked around the room for David but was shocked when she found him.
He was slumped in a corner with Mike. His eyes were half closed and he had a sleepy smile plastered on his face. Faith stepped towards him and thats when she saw it. The needle. She tried to hide her shock but stumbled backwards. Thats when she noticed that David wasnt alone. Many of the rooms occupants were fiddling with tiny pieces of tinfoil and lighters, a needle ready in the other hand. Others were smoking somthing Faith knew they hadnt bought from any shop.
Someone crept behind her and casually grabbed at her waist before turning to talk to a dazed David.

Person: She the knew bird then
David: Yeah she's a cracker aint ya Faithy
Person: She looks game

Faith stepped away a little

Person: She looks a bit more fun that the last one whats her name...Lot thats it. Tell ya what Dave if you get bored I'll take her off ya hands

Faith stopped listening and fled from the room. She didnt know what made her run. She didnt know whether it was the casualness of Davids friend. She didnt know whether it was because his friend had called him dave. She had only ever accosiated that name with the man who had shot her and tried to destroy her family, and she didnt know whether it was the misplaced reference to Davids ex girlfriend...Lot.
Faith bounded up the stairs, sweat and misplaced tears running down her face before something clicked and she headed towards Jamies room. She didnt even knock and he didnt seem to mind. He just looked at her with those same pitiful eyes.

Jamie: You shouldnt have gone down.

Faith looked at him and started to cry. He stood up and huggedher briefly before guiding her to a seat at the foot of his bed

Jamie: I'm sorry, I just didnt want you to see that, you're better than all that and David doesnt deserve you

Faith looked up, drying her eyes and smiled at him gratefully.

Faith: Thanks Jamie, I know he's your brother so that means a lot
Jamie: Faith, I hate him, he's an idiot and he doesnt know how lucky he is. The drugs are just Davids way of escaping. Sometimes he just needs to get away. You know?

Faith looked at her feet she knew exactly how that felt

Faith: Jamie can I ask you something?
Jamie: Sure fire away
Faith: Charlotte, the girl who had my room? People called her Lot didnt they?

Jamie shifted in his seat

Jamie: Yeah but....
Faith: She was Davids girlfriend wasnt she?
Jamie: Yeah but Faith you really dont want to be thinking too much about Charlotte no one likes to talk about her.
Faith: I need to know Jamie, I need to know what happened to her, where did she go?

Jamie looked down and placed his head in his hands before looking directly in her eyes.

Jamie: You want to know where she went, King Street Cemetary thats were.

Part 12

As soon as she put the phone down Sharon knew what to do. She had to go to Brighton. She phoned Alyss and told her what was going on before arranging baby sitters and rushing upstairs to pack a bag. She didnt know what she was doing or why but she knew she had to do it, whatever it was. She was going to look for Faith but she had no idea where to start. She was going to look for Faith but had no idea what to say. She was going to look for Faith but had no idea whether she even wanted to find her, all she knew was that it was her duty as a mother to find her and she owed it to Dennis to find the truth.
She needed to kow once and for all what happened that weekend and the only way she could do that was by finding the only person who really knew. Sharon grabbed her bag and headed for the train station. She collected her ticket and placed herself in a carriage wondering if she was in the same seat faith had sat in. Her phone rang and she jumped to answer it. It was Alyss.

Alyss: Mum what shall I tell Ryan and the twins, they want to know where you are.
Sharon: Dont worry sweetie just tell them mummy will be back in a few days. The baby sitter will be there soon promise.
Alyss: You'll find her wont you mum
Sharon: I'll try
Alyss: You have to find her mum, you have to, promise me you'll find her
Sharon: I promise ok Alyss I'll find her I promise and I'll bring her home
Alyss: I know mum I know. Give her my love
Sharon: I will
Alyss: Bye mum, love you
Sharon: Love you too baby

Sharon put the phone away and put her head in her hands. Had she just made a promise to Alyss that she couldnt keep?

Hi its me again. I know your all dying to know about Charlotte, even I want to know lol so here goes.

Part 13

Faith looked at Jamie and all of a sudden she shivered as cool beads of sweat trickled down her back.

Faith: The...the...the cemetary?

Jamie looked back at her a nodded

Faith: What happened Jamie, I want to know, need to know.

Jamie sighed and for a minute Faith thought he wasnt going to tell her, then he spoke:

Jamie: It was about six months ago. Charlotte ust turned up one day, she was one of Selene's friends and they had all the same charms. Charlotte was pretty and clever, funny too but she was insecure. She'd been abused by her family, thats why she was on the run in the first place. David took and instant liking to her and she clung onto his desperate for the love he gave her. They did everything together, laughed together, played together, slept together...

Jamie looked up and caught Faiths blush.

Jamie: They were inseperable, then the drugs started. I dont even remember how it happened. It must have been a gradual thing but I dont remember how it happened, I dont know when they became addicts.

Faith listened calmly but inside she was screaming and almost exploding with dread at how Jamies story would inevitably end.

Jamie: He was the worst. He'd be doped up from morning till night. He started to love the drug more than her, that when she got into it as well. She couldnt face losing him so she befriended the very thing that had taken him from her. Soon the drugs became her escape route. She said they helped her forget, forget the abuse, forget how lonely she was, forget how David didnt love her. I guess one day she just forgot everything.

He stopped. Faith urged him on.

Jamie: It was late summer and David and Lot were going away. just him, her and a car full of drugs and alcohol. They had a spot near the lake. Lot had been so excited, she'd been planning it for weeks

He took a deep breath.

Jamie: They left on the Friday, got there properly saturday ...David rang us Sunday morning to tell us she was dead.
Faith: Jamie...what happened that weekend?

It felt so strange for Faith to ask that question, it seemed as though that was all people had been saying to her.

Jamie: The first day they were there everything was fine, they didnt even touch the drugs. They went swimming in the lake, sunbathed most of the day and made love most of the night. It was the next morning, she woke up with a head ache, felt really ill. David told her it was just cos she hadnt had her fix. She did a line of coke and went back to bed but by mid morning she didnt feel any better so David suggested a bath, he ran it for her then helped her do a quick bit of heroin. They thought it would help, thought it would pick her up but it didnt seem to effect her. She went to get her bath and when David went to check on her ten minutes later she was dead.

Faith looked at him.

Faith: She drowned?

Jamie looked at the floor.

Jamie: I almost wish she had. No Faith, the bath had over-run, she slipped on the bath mat, knocked her self out and because of the drugs she choked on her own vomit. It was a bad batch of drugs and Lot had reacted to them badly. She'd done a line the day before thats why she felt so bad. That dose in the morning tipped her over. The doctors report said she'd only been knocked out for a couple of seconds, certainly not long enough to cause damage. The only thing was when she woke up she couldnt move, She was that out of it she couldnt even roll over and she drowned in her own vomit.

A tear rolled down his eye.

Jamie: She was sixteen, David left her for ten minutes and now she's dead.

Hi again glad you enjoyed the last part. Its weird you'll never actually meet Charlotte but she's one of the most important characters lol. Here's the next part.

Part 14

Faith said her goodnights to Jamie and shuffled off back to her room, Charlottes room. Now she knew Charlottes story the room seemed like a completely different place. Faith could smell the lingering sweet smell that she knew must have been Charlottes’ perfume. There was a red stain on the carpet which Faith now noticed and presumed to be lip gloss that she had spilt. Faith noticed the scratches on the window sill where Charlotte had cried so hard on the floor that her nails had imprinted the gloss paint. Everything about the room seemed a million times more tragic because of what Faith now knew. Faith sank to her knees in front of the door and cried for the poor girl and the terrible life she had lived.
Faith couldnt stop crying. Everything seemed ten times worse than it had this morning. All the feelings from the past six months bubbled to the surface and exploded in a fountain of tears. She felt terrible about poor Charlotte and hated that she was Davids replacement. She hated David for the drugs, she felt cheated and lied to. She felt bad for running away, she felt bad for eve going to Brighton. She missed her family. She missed the sound of Ryan kicking his ball against the outside wall, she missed Lilly and Toby fighting over a new toy they had been told to share. She missed Alyss's hugs and reasuring smile. She missed her mum. She missed just being around her mum...and she missed her dad. She missed him so much it felt like things would never be right again. And she was right, they never would be. Her dad was never coming back, how could things ever be right for her again. She missed her memory and hated that she couldnt remember what had happened that night. She squeezed her eyes tight shut and willed herself to remember what happened. She tried to remember if it was her fault, tried to remember when it had happened, where it had happened, why it had happened. But she couldnt.
She threw a stray shoe across the room in frustration and continued to cry, her sweet angry sobs echoing down the hallway. It didnt help. Her head was yet again filled with the same blurry images she had seen in her dreams and yet again she had that undoubtable feeling of being trapped. She hated that she didnt know and hated that she was the one who had spent those last precious moments with her father and yet it was no use to anyone. Then again maybe she didnt want to know. What if it was her fault what if she had been the cause of her fathers death, what if it was her fault he was dead. Would Alyss be so kind and forgiving then? Faith knew the answer and she didnt like it. She knew for certain her mother wouldnt be as kind. Faith knew that sharon blamed her and she didnt hate her for it. Faith knew that she would probably blame herself if she was in sharons position, after all no one really knew who's fault it was. Maybe Faith was a killer. Faith shocked herself with the thought that maybe they would never know. Maybe she would always be branded a killer, her own fathers killer without any proof or conviction and maybe if she did remember no one would believe her. Faith decided she didnt care. It didnt matter if no one believed her as long as she knew the truth. She needed to know the truth. She needed to feel ok again. She needed it all to go away.
Without thinking Faith tore out of her room and ran down the stairs, through the smoke filled room and into the kitchen. Selene was there making out with some random boy but Faith ignored them and quickly found what she was looking for. It was so neatly on the side. So harmless and yet so sinister at the same time. Faith picked up the discarded needle and took the plunge. She winced as the metal strand scratched at her skin but it didnt hurt for long. Soon nothing hurt. As Faiths legs gave way her head began to swirl everything was good again. There was no hurt, no pain or hurt. Just nothingness an as Faith slipped into oblivion she saw David standing over her, a sloppy smile on his face. What had she done.......!

Part 15

The train journey went quick but Sharon couldnt get her promise to Alyss out of her head. She couldnt help but think that she would dissapoint her daughter in one way or another. If she couldnt bring Faith home then she'd break her promise but if she did bring Faith home then Alyss might find out her sister was a murderer and sharon doubted she wanted that.
Sharon checked into a small B&B, dumped her stuff and headed straight out onto the streets to begin her search. It was there on the pavement in the busiest part of Brighton that Sharon realised she ahd no idea where to start looking. For a good hour she did little more than pace the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of Faith before she realised that it could take weeks to find her that way and she had just two days. Sharon went to the police station and the hospital but the neither had seen Faith. She visited several hostels but again no one had seen her daughter. By the end of the first day Sharon was beginning to think that she would never see or hear from Faith ever again. Then came the phonecall that changed that...

Part 16

Faith tried to open her eyes but her head throbbed and the light in the room was far too bright for her. When she finally did peel her eyes open it was only to stare into the faces of the two people standing over her.

Jamie: Thank God she's awake
David: see I told you, you got to have more faith in me little bro
Jamie: Is that supposed to be funny?
David: No jeese you need to chill out big time.

Faith put a hand to her head and Jamie walked to her side.

Jamie: Are you ok?
Faith: I'm fine
Jamie: Do you want me to...
Faith: I'd really like it if you left...both of you
Jamie: But Faith...
Faith: Please just get out
Jamie: What if…
Faith: GET OUT!!!!

Jamie and David scuttled out of the room leaving Faith alone and upset. She had no idea where the anger had come from but she knew why it was there. She was dissapointed with herself for doing what she did. She'd known it was wrong and after what Jamie had told her about Charlotte it was the last thing she wanted to get involved with but now here she was sat in er bedroom, Charlottes room crying her eyes out because of what she'd done. Something stirred inside her, the need for a friendly voice for someone who wouldnt judge her. She rolled of the bed and fished underneath it for her bag, extracting her mobile from the inner pocket. She flicked through the phonebook before finding the number she wanted and with shaking fingers pressed the call button and held the phone tight to her ear.

Alyss: Hello, HELLO?

Faith didnt know why she had frozen but she couldnt talk

Alyss: Faith its you isnt it?
Faith: How...how did you know?
Alyss: I have caller display you dummie

Faith smiled and Alyss giggled at their sisterly banter

Alyss: Where are you Faith?
Faith: I dont want to talk about that
Alyss: Mums out looking for you she's gone to Brighton

Faiths heart skipped a beat. Her mum was there, she could be just yards away from this house.

Faith: I said I didnt want to talk about it
Alyss: So what do you want to talk about. We all miss you soo much Fay.
Faith: Tell me you love me Ally
Alyss: I love you, of course I do
Faith: Tell me you miss me and you want me home
Alyss: I just told you, we all miss you, whats this about Fay?
Faith: Tell me you'll always be my siser and you'll always love me
Alyss: Of course I will
Faith: No matter what I've done?

The line went quiet

Alyss: What have you done Faith?
Faith: I dont know Alyss, I dont know

Sharon: And she was ok, I mean she sounded fine?
Alyss: She seemed a little messed up in the head, kept talking about things she'd done and how she needed us to love her but other than that she seemed ok

Sharon finished the conversation and put the phone down. She didnt know if it was good news of bad news, it was just news and it didnt really change anything. Sharon still had to get up tomorrow and pace the streets in search of her daughter because news or not she still had no idea where Faith was............................................... .................................................. ..

She quickly forgave David, after all he was all she had and she began to cling to him with a desperation that was new and alien to her. There were fleeting moments of clarity when she remembered Jamie's story and wondered if that was how Charlotte had felt but most of the time she just liked to pretend that Charlotte had never existed. She felt closer to David tha ever before but something felt wrong. Jamie.
Faith knew she liked him and she was pretty sure he liked her too, she also knew that it could never happen. David trusted her and she couldnt betray him by leaving him for his brother. Besides Jamie didnt seem willing to take the risk either, he hadnt said anything to her after all but then one night something happened that made Faith realise that she could never have Jamie, even if she wanted him.

.....................

The house was empty apart from David and Faith. The were both sat on the sofa, his arm wrapped around her shoulders. They were supposed to be watching a film but Faith could tell he wasnt concentrating. His fingers twisted their way around a loose blonde curl as he stared at her with those fierce green eyes. He made her uneasy and she had no idea why. The film ended and for a while neither of them moved. Faith stood up to retrieve the remote from the other side of the room but David had other ideas. He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her down onto his knee before locking his lips onto hers. Faith was taken aback but responded the best she could as David flipped her round and pushed her into the sofa. His hands ran down her body, tugging at her shirt and pulling the hem of her skirt upwards. Her first instinct was to panic but she couldnt move, David body was pressing her down tightly, pinning her to the sofa. He kissed her. Her neck, her face, before he undid the buttons and removed her top. Faith wriggled but it was no use. She tried to protest but her mouth wouldnt form the words. She wished she was stronger, she wished she could say what she wanted but she no longer knew what she wanted. Her last coherent thought was of how young she felt, how niave. After that she was lost in the exstacy of it all before her mind slipped away as she waited for it to end.

......................

Faith woke up and shivered as a breeze rippled through the house. David lay sleeping next to her on the couch, an odd look of satisfaction smothered across his face. She tried to stand up but her legs ached and every movement caused a sharp pain to rip through her like a knife. She settled for small movements and strategically rolled of the sofa and retrieved her clothes from the floor. David groaned in his sleep and as Faith looked at his naked form asleep on the sofa she shivered again, this time not from the cold. She couldnt help but cry.
She was just starting to do the buttons on her top when she heard the front door bang. Faith froze as Selene walked through the door before stopping in her tracks and staring down at Faith. Faith realised what a sight she must look. There she was, wearing nothing but a half buttoned blouse, the rest of her clothes scattered across the living room floor. She knew her hair must be a mess, her waist length mass of golden curls acting as a curtain across her bare body and only now did she notice the red finger marks indented on her legs. Her eyes were red and puffy and the sight of Selene just made her cry more.
There was another bang as the door closed for a second time. David shifted but he didnt wake up as Jamie walked into the room. Faith hastily covered herself as Jamies eyes flickered from Faith then to his brother before looking back at Faith with and odd look of dissapointment on his face. Selene stepped forward.

Selene: Faith sweety come with me lets sort you out.

Selene helped Faith to her feet and walked her out of the room. Faith glanced sideways but Jamie refused to look at her, Faith didnt blame him. She was ashamed of herself.
Selene took Faith upstairs and silently helped her to dress. They didnt talk and Selene didnt pass judgement before leaving Faith alone in her room. Faith sat cross-legged on her bed. Downstairs she could hear David waking up and prayed her didnt come to find her. She felt nothing but despair. How could things get any worse? She was ashamed of herself and she couldnt believe what had happened. She felt dirty, tainted. She felt terrible and was filled with so much pain. But she knew how the pain could go away.
She reached over to her bedside cabinate and opened the bottom drawer, pulling out a clear plastic bag filled with a handful of tiny white pills. Faith took one out and looked at it.

Faith: I'm not like Charlotte. I'm not like Charlotte. I'm not like Charlotte. I'm not like Charlotte.

She wasnt like Charlotte. Faith thought she was stronger than that, better than that. Faith lifted the tablet to her lips and swallowed it. After all it would make her better and one pill couldnt do too much harm could it?

Part 19

The drugs became a regular thing for Faith after that. So did slepping with David. It was as though she wasnt there, it was almost as if Faith Angela Rickman didnt exist anymore. The drugs made everything easy everything felt safe. Faith knew the drugs had to stop, and she was trying so hard but being around David and the others made it all twice as difficult. She hated the withdrawel symptoms, the way they made you shake and feel as though your insides were burning but the head aches and the nausea that was the worst.
It was during one of these attacks of nausea that Faith had locked herself upstairs in her room. She'd cleared her room of all the drugs and now spent most of her time in there. It was easier that being downstairs with the others, there was less temptation. She curled up in the middle of the bed, her arms wrapped round her in a desperate attempt to rid herself of the pain. She heard a noise from the door and looked up to see Jamie at the foot of the bed. She propped herself up on the pillows and tried to stop her head spinning as her vision swirled and blured.

Jamie: I thought I might find you here, are you ok?

Faith blinked at him. They hadnt really talked since he'd come home to find her half naked on the living room floor and it was not a conversation that she wanted to go out of her way to have.

Faith: I'm...
Jamie: I know, stupid question. I know how hard it is
Faith: You took drugs?
Jamie: Faith I'm Davids brother, of course I took drugs.

He gave Faith a wonkey smile and sat on the bed. She drew her knees up and swivelled round to sit next to him.

Faith: But you gave up?
Jamie: Yeah I did. And it was hard, for a while but you need to remember that this wont last forever Faith.
Faith: I hope not

They looked at each other, an awkward silence followed.

Jamie: Faith about the other day...
Faith: I'm so sorry I dont know what to say...
Jamie: I'm sorry I havent been talking to you its just I was...
Faith: You looked dissapointed.
Jamie: I suppose I was. I dont want you to get hurt Faith. I dont want you to end up like Charlotte. You deserve so much more than this Faith, you're so much better than this and I care too much about you for you to throw your life away on some stupid druggie like my idiot of a brother.

They both took a deep breath.

Faith: You...you care about me?
Jamie: I err...I...of course I do, you're like a sister to me

Faith looked down trying to hide her dissapointment but Jamie noticed. He placed a hand on her face and forced her to look at him.

Jamie: Not a sister, more than that but you're my brothers girlfriend and as much as I hate that...
Faith: I know...

Faith understood and as much as she hated it she knew she wouldnt have it any other way. Jamie wouldnt steal his brothers girlfriend, he was better than that and Faith was better than to sleep with her boyfriends brother. At fifteen faith had seen more things than most people twice her age, things no one should have to see but one thing she never wanted to see was Jamies coffin and thats what she would see if anything happened between them, David would kill him and Faith wasnt about to let that happen. So she resisted temptation and Jamie left her room.

The drugs were hard, but as Faith decided... love was harder

Just another short part with sharon

Part 20

Sharon gave a sharp tug on the suitcase handle, causing it to trundle neatly down the remaining three stairs before regaining her composure and heading for the reception desk.

Receptionist: Ms Rickman?
Sharon: Mrs

The receptionist gave her a funny look as if she knew darn well her husband hadnt been with her.

Receptionist: Oh very well, checking out are we?
Sharon: Yes, yes thats right

I had been a week but Sharo couldnt put it off any longer, she was going home. To start with she had only planned on staying a couple of nights, three at the mosts but as the days dragged on and Sharons quest for Faith became even more futile her promise to Alyss began to weigh her down. She'd promised to bring Alyss her sister back and now she was forced to go home empty handed. She'd always known it was a long shot. For all she knew Faith could be half way round the world or she could be staying three streets away. She really had no idea. Faith could be dead for all she knew. No. She wasnt dead, Sharon was sure of that, she could just feel it.
The middle aged receptionist beamed at her, showing a set of pearly false teeth and the remains of yesterdays dinner.

Receptionist: Ok you've no additional charges to pay Mrs Rickman. I hope you enjoyed your stay and we hope to be saying you again soon.

Sharon stepped away from the smug receptionist and out onto the street before sliding into a waiting taxi. It was time to go home and concentrate on her four other children. It was time to face the music and hope for the best.

The house was in crisis talks. Or at least thats what it felt like for Faith. Her, David, Jamie, Selene, Steve and Mike had been sat together in the lining room for what seemed like hours. Money was low and no one could think of a good way to make more of it.

Faith: Why dont we just get jobs?
Steve: Dont be stupid Faith
Faith: Well why not?
Steve: Because you're too young and the rest of us haven't got three qualifications between us.

Faith shrugged

Jamie: We could just sell some stuff.
David: Very clever Jamie except we dont have anything to sell you moron we sold the tv last time. No its no good we'll have to do a job.
Faith: I thought you said...
David: Not that kind of job baby

The group all laughed and Faith caught on.

Faith: But we cant thats...
David: Illegal?
Faith: Well yeah
Mike: Wake up Faith most of what we do isnt legal but you didnt exactly moan about the drugs did you.
Faith: I'm clean now you know that.
David: Yeah she's a regular saint just like our Jamie

Faith glanced at Jamie but looked away before he caught her eye.

Faith: This is different, the drugs didnt hurt anyone but us.

The rest of the group just ignored her and David and Steve wandered off into a corner to discuss arrangements, Selene went to the bathroom and Mike went for a fag. That left Faith and Jamie.

Jamie: They dont hurt anyone you know
Faith: Thats not the point
Jamie: I know that but do you really think you can change their mind, i dont. Its a quick fix for them Faith thats all it is.

David and Steve rejoined the group.

David: Right so thats it sorted.
Steve: We're doing crawly Street tonight. A couple of houses should do it.

The pair exchanged an evil grin.

Steve: Do you know where crawly street is Faith?
Faith: No and I dont want to. I want nothing to do with this
David: Not and option baby you're coming with us
Jamie: NO! She cant!

Jamie was on his feet, a look of distress on his face.

Jamie: Dont take her, dont make her do this. What if you get caught? This isnt fair.
David: Life's not fair but I dont make the rules, she's comig and thats that.
Steve: Yeah cos if she dont go she'll be finding somewhere else to live.

Faith looked at her feet. She couldnt believe she was going to do this.

Part 22

Faith drew her arms around her shoulders and hugged herself, she couldnt believe she was about to do this. They were waiting at the house, poised to leave any minute now and Faith felt sick. Everything had been arranged. Her, David and Steve would walk to Crawley Street and hunt out a house with an open window. Once they'd found one Faith and David wee going to sneak in and fill a rucksack each with whatever they could find while Steve kept look out. Faith had wanted to be look out but Steve posed the arguament that she was smaller and would fit better through windows and besides they weren't going to let her off that easily. It was nine o clock, time to go. Faith pulled a baseball cap over her mass of curls and said a sad goodbye to Jamie and Selene who hovered in the doorway before she walked out of the house and followed David and Steve down the loong street and out of site.
It turned out Crawley Street wasn't that far away and it wasn't long before they found a suitable house. The light were all out and it appeared that the house had not been occupied for sometime although it was still full to the brim with possesions. David prised the window open with a crow-bar and slipped through, followed by Faith who was carrying the bags and on entrance to the house promptly knocked over a rather expensive looking vase with shattered with impact on the thinly carpeted floor.

David: Oi watch it will you. Do you want us to get caught?

Faith shook her head earnestly and thought how strange David sounded when he whispered.

David: You take upstairs I'll do down here

Faith knew upstairs would be harder to escape from but she did it anyway. She climbed the dusty srairs on Davids order and thought how creepy the abaondoned house really was. On the landing there were three doors. She entered the first room, the bathroom but there wasn't much to take, only an old watch. She gave up and progressed to the second room. Faith coul tell it had once been a childs bedroom but she could also tell that it had not been used for years. The wallpaper was faded and dated and Faith decided the room had probably belonged to someone who had long since gown up and 'flown the nest' so to speak. Opposite the small bed was a dressing table not unsimilar to the one Faith and Alyss shared at home. Faith sighed at the thought of her sister as she sat down at the table and looked into the cracked dusty mirror. Then, all of a sudden an odd feeling came over Faith and she felt like she was going to faint as images flashed through her head to form a memory.

*******

Faith picked up the brush and ran it through her ringlets, letting them slip one by one onto her shoulder. Normally she would have to fight with Alyss to use the dressing table but not today. Alyss wasn't there, she was at a friends and soon Faith wouldnt be there either. Faith heard a voice from downstairs telling her to hurry up. It was 9 am on a friday morning and Faith was preparing for a very special trip. She shouted from her room.

Faith: Coming dad!

She grabbed the prepared bag and exited the room and bounded down the stairs. She was greeted at the bottom by her father.

Dennis: Ready?
Faith: Yep
Dennis: Well lets go then

He opened the door for her and smiled. He smiled. He was looking forward to the weekend ahead...

*******

Faith wobled on the seat as the memory came to a abrupt end caused by shouting from downstairs.

David: Hurry up will you we have to go

Faith rushed round the final room shoving anything she could find into the bag but she still couldnt think straight and she still felt dizzy. Was that a memory? A memory from that day? Up until now Faith had remembered nothing of what happened that weekend. Maybe now she could remember what happened to her dad. But did she want to know. The rush of thoughts and emotions was all too much to cope with and a final dissy spell sent Faith hurtling down the stairs before she hit her head on the bottom step and was engulfed in darkness

Part 23

The leaves broke beneath their feet and stray drops of rain speckled their coats but as they walked through the cemetary Sharon and Alyss Rickman hardly noticed.
Alyss looked at her mother as they came to a halt in front of her fathers grave.

Alyss: I'll just be over there if you need me

Alyss pointed to the section of the cemetary for children. Sharon gave a weak smile and let her go before kneeling down on the sodden grass in front of Dennis's headstone.

Dennis Rickman
Loving father, devoted husband
Soulmate
Forever

Sharon: Hi baby, I miss you

The simple statement make Sharon break down sobbing

Sharon: I miss you, I miss you so much and now Faith has been missing for almosttwo and a half months and I dont know what to do, she could be dead and I wouldnt even...

The tears took over

Sharon: I wouldnt even know.

Sharon pulled her coat around herself

Sharon: I feel so guilty...I feel like its my fault, and I know you dont understand, no one does but I'm glad, part of me is glad she's gone, part of me doesnt care...

She squeezed her eyes tight shut and was glad that the cemetary was empty.

Sharon: Part of me wants her to be dead and part of me wishes it was her and not you that died and all of me wishes I knew what happened.

Sharon hugged herself and meanwhile Alyss stopped at a familiar grave. She read the headstone

Here lies Jacob Daniel Rickman
who fell asleep aged 1 day
on the 29th september 2005
gone but not forgotten
you are with us always

Alyss: Hi Jacob

Her voice was quiet but steady Faith was the only one of the Rickman children that cried for Jacob and Alyss knew she always would. Faith cried for what had been lost, she cried for what could have been and mourned her twin as though a part of her was gone forever. But Faith wasnt here and so there were no tears.

Alyss: I know Faith would want to bring you flowers but it doesnt look as though she can so...

Alyss lay the waiting bunch of flowers on the grave.

Alyss: I would have liked to have known you.

She laughed a little

Alyss: I would have liked the chaos, a male version of Faith running round mmmm interesting concept.

She smiled

Alyss: By Jacob speak to you soon, and by the way if you know where she is, send her home. We need her.

Alyss turned round and headed over to her mum, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder to step the tears.

Alyss: Come on mum time to go.

Sharon nodded and stood up turning to the grave.

Sharon: Love you baby, forever.
Alyss: By dad...daddy

Alyss's eyes welled up with tears and the pair left with their arms around each other, both praying for a miricle, both wondering what would happen if they got it.

Part 24

^^^^^^^

He smiles, she waves back.

Dennis: Hi angel come on over.

He becons her to where he stands, she falters and looks at him, something seems amiss. The ground shakes and opens, he dissapears but she can still hear his voice.

Dennis: Its you're fault, ITS ALL YOUR FAULT!

^^^^^^^

Faith woke with a start her eyes burning and her head throbbing. Jamie was at her side and Faith knew David was in the room too.

Jamie: Shhhh its ok just relax

Faith flopped back onto the pillows and felt confused.

Faith: What happened?

David stepped forward and placed an intimate hand around her waist as she lay in the bed

David: You fell, I saw you at the top of the stairs the you just went all funny and the next thing I knew you'd cracked your 'ead on the bottom step. Me and steve 'ad to carry you 'ome

Now Faith remembered, she remembered the flashbacks and she remembered the piercing pain that had rushed through her head. She looked back on the memory and wanted to cry.

David: Well now you're alright I can go cant I.

He looked at Jamie as though he were there under duress and jame followed David to Faiths bedroom door, standing just outside as they argued.

Jamie: She could have been seriously hurt!
David: Yeah well she's alright now aint she
Jamie: Thats not the point
David: For gods sake Jamie loosen up, its not as if I'm tied to her
Jamie:She's your girlfriend!
David: Yeah so

Faith stood up and walked towards the door to hear more of the conversation.

Jamie: She deserves more than this
David: Yeah whatever

He turned to walk away but Jamie pulled him back

Jamie: I dont want you to hurt her David
David: Look Jamie I dont get what the big deal is. She's just a girl and the more the merrier so if you dont mind while she's under the weather I'm off to see Lola.
Jamie: WHAT! How could you how could you carry on with her after what it did to Lot

Faith had had enough. She stepped out of the room and the pair turned to look at her.

Faith: Who's Lola?

David looked at her before glaring at Jamie and walking away. Jamie looked sadly at Faith, the glimmer of anger still shining in his eyes.

Jamie: Come on Faith lets get you back inside, you need to rest

Part 25

Jamie led Faith back over to the bed and the pair sat down. He looked at her, she looked at the floor.

Faith:It wasnt supposed to be like this. I left London to loose my troubles not find new ones.

There was silence before Jamie ventured the question.

Jamie: What are you running from Faith?
Faith: Its a long story
Jamie: I'm not going anywhere

She stood up and walked away a little

Jamie: What happened that was so awful that now you cant go back to a home and family who obviously love you?

Faith turned to face him, her hair slightly knotted as it whipped to the side of her face.

Jamie: So its because of them you cant go back?
Faith: I never said that.

She walked quickly to the head of the bed and rearranged the covers neatly, desperatly looking for distraction

Jamie: Faith what happened?
Faith: You wouldnt understand.
Jamie: Try me

Her eyes welled with tears as she stormed round the room, but she wasnt angry. She felt trapped.

Faith: I want to tell you I really do but...

Jamie stood up and reached for her arm, pulling her round to face him, they were inches away from each other

Jamie: If you want to tell me then tell me

She sighed and sat on the bed; he followed her lead and copied.

Faith: I cant Jamie
Jamie: Yes you can I promise it'll be between just me and you
Faith: No...you dont understand, I cant tell you because I dont know

Jamie looked at her and frowned as Faith began her story

Faith: This is it but you'll have to bear with me there's still a lot I dont know. It all started eight months ago, Me and my dad were going on our annual father daughter trip. We went every year just me and him and this year was going to be better than ever, only it all went wrong. The last thing I remember is us leaving on the friday morning...by monday my dad was dead and I was in intensive care.

Jamie looked at her, a look of shock on his face

Jamie: What happened?
Faith: From what I've heard since a pair of hikers found us in a clearing in the middle of nowhere on the Sunday morning.

She cleared her throat.

Faith: I was unconscious and my dad was already dead. We were both miles away from where we were staying and we were soaking wet but we hadn’t been anywhere near water, the nearest water was a lake a couple of miles north, I've never even been there...they said...they said that when the found me I-I-I still had hold of his hand

Tears spilled onto her cheeks and Jamie pulled her into a hug

Jamie: I'm so sorry Faith that must have been awful to go through but I still don’t get why you ran away.

Faith looked at him, determined to finish her story even though the tears wouldn’t stop.

Faith: The coroner ruled it death by drowning and it was treated as suspicious after all we were nowhere near water how could it have been an accident and as soon as I recovered I was the first and only suspect. The police interviewed me for three days straight but it was useless. I couldn’t remember anything, mild amnesia they call it. When something traumatic happens the mind just blocks it out. The police gave up in the end, they couldn't prove it was me and I wasn’t exactly being helpful. They closed the case pending further investigation and sent me home. But it wasn’t over because we don’t know the truth, no one does and for all anyone knows I could have killed my own father. Families can’t survive like that, I can’t survive like that. I couldn’t handle the way my sister looked at me, I couldn’t stand the way my mum couldn’t forgive me. I don’t blame her I really don’t but the thing is I cant forgive myself, and I punish myself everyday because it could be true, I could have done it and I cant even remember. I don’t remember anything between leaving Friday morning and waking up in intensive care two weeks later to be told that my dad was dead and I could have done it. I was so confused, so angry and so upset, I wanted to die, I wished it had been me so I wouldn’t have to see the look that crept into my mums eyes whenever dad was mention.

She stopped, the tears taking over and Jamie wrapped his arms around her and rocked her gently

Jamie: Shh, shh it'll be ok, you'll see and for what its worth I dont think you did it.
Faith: Really?

Faith looked up, her face dangerously close to his. She could see a million different colours in his eyes but each one was another flicker of love and care.

Jamie: Really

It was barely a whisper but they were so close. Faith took leave of her senses and tilted her head forward. Jmaie took the que and their lips met, soft and slow at first the faster, more demanding. The pair fell onto the bed and clothes were quickly disgarded. Jamie stopped and stroked Faiths face.

Jamie: Are you sure...David...
Faith: If we only have tonight it'll be enough

She smiled at him and kissed his face, his fingers, his chest she wanted to forget everything, she wanted to lose herself and Jamie was a very good person to get lost in but she knew the rules and she knew that this was all they could ever have. Faith had nowhere else to go and if David found out about the two of them Faith and Jamie would both be in a lot of trouble. No, this was all they could ever have, but for now it was enough...

Part 26

Alyss walked into the room and flopped onto the bed. She was so tired. It seemed as though she was always tired these days. Tired, of school, tired of home, tired of a life without her sister and tired of waiting for things to be normal again.
But they never would be normal again and Alyss knew that now. Too much had changed. Alyss could hear the noise of police sirens from her window and she could make out the flickering street lights standing tall among the houses outside her room. She kicked her shoes off and looked across at Faiths neat bed. The sheets were flat and the linen was fresh. The bed had not been slept in for months and yet the sheets were still being changed every week like clockwork. Alyss didnt see the clean sheets, she only saw the bed that should have her sister in and wondered where she was.
Alyss wasn't upset with Faith she was angry. Alyss was angry that when she had needed her sister most she wasnt there. Alyss had always relied on Faith for support and now in the centre of a family crisis Alyss had no one to turn to. She missed her sister.
Alyss had thought long and hard about what she thought had happened that night but eventually her head began to throb and her heart lost interest. If Faith ever did remember she would tell her and thats all Alyss needed to know. The not knowing didnt worry Alyss, she was blissful in her ignorance. She would rather be able to love her sister and enjoy her family than think that Faith may have killed their father and ruined the only stability Alyss had ever known. Unlike her mother Alyss didnt need to knw she just needed her sister.
Alyss climbed of her own bed and crawled fully clothed into Faiths bed. She hugged the brown bear that had lain on her sisters pillow and inhaled the familiar scent of berries and wild flowers that Faith had claimed so well as her own. She hugged the bear as though it were Faith and she hugged so tightly trying never to let go.

Alyss: I love you Faith I love you, I need you

Alyss remembered a time not too long ago when Faith had needed her and she had not been there. Alyss remembered the bruises of Faith and her mother and Faith screming at her to believe that it was not her fault and that their would-be step father was to blame, but Alyss didnt listen. She ignored what was blatently obvious and had let Faith down when she had needed her most. After that it had taken Faith a long time to trust Alyss again. And now...now Alyss had let her down all over again and in her fourteen years of life Alyss had never felt so bad. Faith had needed her support when the whole world had turned against her, when Faith had been going through something that Alyss could never possibly understand and Alyss had done what she always did when things were hard, she had forgotten all about blame and what might had happened and she had wrapped her self up in the comfort blanket of ignorance. She had ignored the problem that was destroying her family in the hope that it would simply go away, but it didnt, Faith did. Faith left and the problem was worse than ever. Alyss had broken the bond with her sister and for that she could never forgive herself.
She hugged the bear tighter and drew her knees up around her chest as tears flowed freely from her eyes and seeped onto Faiths pillow

Alyss: I miss you Fay, I miss you

Alyss's words echoed into the night and thousands of miles away in Brighton Faith Angela Rickman woke with a start...

part 27

It was nearly two months since her night with Jamie and Faiths life had become and endless task of lies and despair. The morning after she had panicked so much she couldn’t stop shaking. She just sat up in the bed shaking from head to toe, it took Jamie almost twenty minutes to calm her down. Then she had simply tried to pretend it had never happened, this seemed to be the best solution and most of the time it worked....but at night time....oh at night time Faith would curl up in her bed and want to cry from the agony of it all. She felt that much loss it hurt to breath and when she was alone in her bed there was no one in the world that could stop her from thinking about Jamie, the way he touched her, the way it felt in his arms, the tickle of his breath on her face, his scent lingering in her hair, they were the hardest times.
Seeing him, that was hard too. Being around him all day and not even being able to be close to him was pure agony and at times Faith thought she would scream out, and then there was David. He still touched her, she still had to endure his lips on hers and his fingers running possessively over her skin, she still had to sleep with him. For about a week after Jamie Faith had thought of every excuse she could but in the end David had all but forced her to sleep with him and she was scared what would happen if she refused again. She stayed as still as possible and waited for it to be over but afterwards found she couldn’t even cry. Her life was out of control, she was out of control and she had no idea how to stop herself. She'd lost herself and she missed the old Faith. She missed the Faith that wouldn’t have stood for this, she missed the Faith that could have loved Jamie and given him what he deserved no matter what the consequences were. She missed the Faith that her father had loved and she missed the Faith that knew she wasn’t a murderer, the new Faith was never sure.
Those months were turmoil for Faith...and then the sickness came.
She wasn’t naive enough to put it down to food poisoning; she had her suspicions straight away. She didn’t actually believe she was pregnant it was just her first fear, and now her biggest fear. That was how after a quick trip down to the chemist on a windy Thursday afternoon, when the rest of the house seemed to be empty fifteen year old Faith Angela Rickman came to be locked in the bathroom, a test kit shaking in her hands.

Faith: You can do this, it’ll be fine

She tried to convince herself to open the packet but her whispers weren’t convincing anyone. She read the back and the attached leaflet three times, delaying the moment when she would actually have to do the test. She followed the few instructions quickly and neatly, placed the test stick on the sink and stood in front to lean on the mirror. She looked at her watch, she was three minutes away from salvation or damnation and she didn’t know which was which. Then…a bang on the wooden down, making Faith jump and the stick fall into the basin of the sink.

Selene: Faith, you in there?

They were back but thank god it was Selene at the door and no one else

Faith: Yeah its me
Selene: Well are you nearly done some of us are dying out here?
Faith: Yeah just give me a few minutes.

Faith didn’t hear any reply and assumed Selene had left to wait until Faith re-emerged from the bathroom. She looked at her watch again. Time up.
Faith tentively re-read the instructions and picked up the stick from behind then plug, looking at it and matching the image to the pictures in the instructions.
She had her answer a faint smile on her face before the tears. Tears of relief or joy?
The stick slipped from her hand and landed neatly on the floor, the answer to all Faiths questions staring up at the ceiling……………………………………⠀¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦ …………………………………………†¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â €¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦ …………………………………………†¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦â€¦..

Part 28

Selene: Faith come on already! You've been in there forever and I'm bursting

Selene banged on the door and shook Faith back to her senses. She was still in the bathroom. The tears had stopped and now she was sat on the toilet lid clutching the test stick in her hand.
She couldnt believe it. She was pregnant. It didnt matter which was she thought it the words sounded alien to her and she was struggling to understand. She couldnt understand why this had happened to her. She and David had always been careful, unless...

Faith: Oh no....

There was another loud bang on the door and Faith realised she had to go. She opened the bathroom door to Selene with every intention of going straight up to her room, but almost instantly Selene's eyes fell on the white plastic stick in her hand and her eyes widened. Selene shook her head in disbelief before grabbing the top of Faiths arm and pulling her back inside the bathroom. She re-locked the door behind her and turned to Faith who was now shaking uncontrollably.

Selene: W...w....well WOW!

Faith looked at the floor and Selene gave her customary giggle. Normally Selene's laugh would have made Faith smile but today the sicly peals made her feel ill.

Selene: So are you pregnant?

Faith wasnt shocked at how direct she was and didnt try to hide the truth

Faith: Yes
Selene: Well that was quick
Faith: Huh?
Selene:Well two months ago you were a virgin, now you're all but a mum
Faith: It wasnt planned
Selene: I gathered that

The tone of Selene's voice made Faith feel guilty, dirty and she knew exactly how her situation sounded: Fifteen year old girl runs away from home, sleeps around and gets herself pregnant. It wasnt exactly a glowing résumé.

Selene: God knows what'll happen now, you cant stay here

Faith looked up

Selene: This house is no place for a baby, Steve wont have it. I wonder what David will say, when will you tell him?

Faith froze

Faith: I...I...I dont know
Selene: Well you have to tell him sooner or later honey cos pretty soon everyone will know anyway. How far gone are you?
Faith: Err I dont know I haven't really thought about it. About two months I suppose

Yeah two months that was about right, at least it fitted with the facts

Selene: exactly, two months so you have to tell David soon. You should do it tonight, before everyone finds out
Faith: No...no I want to wait

Maybe it was the tone of voice Faith used or the hastiness of her reply but either way Selene knew something was up.

Selene: Faith? What is it?

Faith looked away and Selene guessed

Selene: Its not Davids is it

It wasnt a question and Faith offered the truth as she slowly shook her head

Faith No, no it isnt Davids
Selene: I dont understand, how can it not be his?
Faith: It isn’t his baby

Faith tried to sound strong but her voice was wavering

Selene: If it isn’t David’s who’s is it?

Faith looked at her and said with undying honesty and ultimate conviction:

Faith: Jamie’s, Its Jamie’s baby

Part 29

Selene's mouth opened in a wide shocked O

Selene: Jamie's, are you serious?
Faith: Believe me when I say I'm not joking

Faith sat down on the toilet and threw the test stick into the waste paper bin beside her and held her head in her hands. After a few minutes she felt Selene's delicate hand on her back

Selene: What are you going to do?

Faith looked up into her fathomless eyes

Faith: I dont know,I dont even know whether to keep it or not, I've only known for the last fifteen minutes, what do you think I should do?

Selene took a step back and helk her hands in the air

Selene: Hey! Cant help you there kiddo, you have to make this decision on your own

Selene nudged Faith to get up and Faith remembered Selene still needed the toilet. Faith sighed and turned the other way until Selene was done.

Faith: Well then tell me this at least, should I tell David
Selene: NO!

Her answer was quick and severe, causing Faith to jerk her head up

Selene: You cant tell him about the baby now, at least not until you know what you’re doing and even then I wouldn’t even think about telling him about Jamie. At least not if you value your life.

Faith nodded, she knew what she meant.

Faith: What about Jamie?
Selene: He has to know whatever you do so maybe the sooner the better.
Faith: Huh, why does he have to know?
Selene: Faith, honey, you’re having his kid. Whether you keep it or not he has a right to know

Faith let her fingers twitch at the bottom of her shirt.

Faith: I cant, I cant tell him
Selene: You have to
Faith: I cant tell him Selene! It just makes every decision I have to make ten times more difficult.
Selene: This isn’t your choice Faith, he has a right to know. You got yourself into this mess now don’t let everyone else suffer.

Faith was again surprised at the harshness of her voice. Selene took in a heavy sigh and flicked back her hair before walking towards the door.

Selene: I’m sorry it has to be like this Faith, I really am, I like you but I like the security of this home more. As messed up as we are we’re like a family Faith and we look out for each other. Jamie has a right to know…so if you don’t tell him by the end of the week, I will…

With that Selene walked out of the bathroom and Faith was left alone with her troubles, well almost alone, after all there was a baby to think of now….

Part 30

The next few days dragged for Faith as she struggled to find a way to tell Jamie about the baby. She knew he had a right to know but she also knew that she had to make a decision over the baby on her own and in some ways if she wasn’t going to keep it then it was pointless telling Jamie. She was beginning to hate being around him. He was trying to be caring and kind towards her but she shrugged him off and never let him get close. She couldn’t let him in, it wouldnt work for either of them, and then there was David. Faith couldnt stand being around him. She knew she could never tell him about the baby. She knew things could never be the same again with David and he was now openly having an affair with Candy, Faith had even had the pleasure of meeting her. She was a ditzy girl, older than Faith with a shock of bright pink hair. Faith didnt like her. Faith felt trapped, she couldnt tell David about the baby, he was having an affair right in front of her eyes and she couldnt leave him. She also couldnt tell Jamie about the baby, had no power to stop him seeing other people and couldnt leave with him. David's mood swings were getting worse too, especially after a few drinks and a line of coke or two and he had hit Faith a few times. After one such arguament Faith was sat on the sofa nursing a bruised cheek when Selene walked in. She walked over to Faith and sat next to her, taking her hand and handing her and ice pack. Faith winced as she placed it on her swelling cheek.

Selene: Faith honey this has to stop, you cant go on like this.
Faith: If you have an alternative I'd like to hear it. I cant leave him Selene, he wont let me and anyway where else would I go?
Selene: You could leave with Jamie. Think about it Faith. Just the three of you, you Jamie and the baby.

Faith looked away

Selene: You still haven't told him have you?
Faith: I cant, if he knows he'll want me to keep it, he'll want us to be a family and I dont know if thats what I want, I need to make this decision on my own
Selene: Let him help you Faith you cant deal with this on your own you need him.
Faith: I can make this decision by myself he doesnt need to know.
Selene: Your fifteen Faith, you dont know what you want and either way you'll need help. If you keep it you'll need to leave and you dont want to bring a kid up on your own I know. You cant stay here because one way or another David will kill you and you baby. And look at this place, there's more drugs in this house than at the customs office, this is no place for a baby. If you decide to get rid of it, you're gonna need moral support and Jamies the only one who can give you that. Now tell him Faith, tell Jamie.

The door creeked and the pair turned to the door

Jamie: Tell me what?

Part 31

The door creeked and the pair turned to the door

Jamie: Tell me what?

Faiths eyes flicked to Selene, silently pleading with her. Selene ignored her.

Selene: Jamie, there's something you need to know...
Faith: NO! Selene please...
Selene: He has to know Faith and if you wont...
Faith: No please dont do this , please I'm begging you, not here, not now...

Jamie was surprised at Faiths distress and it heightened his own panic

Jamie: What is it? Will someone please tell me whats going on?
Selene: Faiths pregnant

She seemed to squeeze the words out before anymore protests could be made and the whole room went silent. It seemed as though even the cars and the birds outside had stopped at the revelation. Slowly Jamie turned to Faith but she looked away, not trusting herself to look into his eyes with enough courage and honesty to form a sentence.

Jamie:You're pregnant?

It was meant as a question but was presented as a fact, he knew the truth there was nothing to hide now but Faith still felt as though someone had their hand at her throat preventing her from speaking

Jamie: Well Faith?

Selene looked from Faith to Jamie and knew this was not where she should be

Selene: I'll leave you two alone

She left the room, grabbing her coat from a peg in the hall and walking out the front door. She was gone but the damage was done.

Jamie: Faith talk to me?

Faith heard the tiny bubble of anger that she knew was rising from his stomach and recoiled from him, flopping down on the sofa and placing her head into her hands, but she didnt cry, she was determined not to cry.

Jamie: Faith?

His voice was softer as he placed a hand on her shoulder, she shrugged his hand away but looked up at him.

Faith: I'm so sorry Jamie
Jamie: Is it mine?

She considered lying to him, it would be easier for both of them that way but Selene was right, he deserved the truth.

Faith: Yes its yours

He looked down and Faith was unable to read his expression. 'Best tell him now', she thought, 'before he thinks...'

Faith: It doesnt matter whose it is anyway, I've made my decision and you wont have to have anything to do with it.
Jamie: What! Its mine, I want to be part of its life.

'Here it comes' she thought 'the hardest part'

Faith: It doesnt matter because there wont be a life to be part of, I'm having an abortion.

Jamie's head flicked up and he stared at her wide eyed.

Jamie: What! You cant...

The door slammed and the pair heard a familiar voice

David: Faith, babes where are you, I want you...?

Faith looked towards the door and shouted to him

Faith: Just a minute, I'm coming

She stood up to leave but jamie grabbed her arm

Jamie: Dont do this Faith please
Faith: I dont have any other choice
Jamie: Yes you do. Think about this, what do you really want?
Faith: This is what I want, I want to be fifteen and innocent again but I cant have that, I want my dad to be alive but I cant have that either. I dotn want to be a mum right now and thats one thing I can have
Jamie: So thats what this is all about, control. Punish yourself all you like Faith but dont punish our baby. I thought you were better than this Faith.

That hurt, Faith wrenched her arm from his grasp and walked towards the door. She didnt even look at him as she spoke

Faith: I'm having an abortion and thats final. There isnt going to be a baby

She exited the room, ignoring the pained look on Jamies Face and went to David, mindful a she went to ignore the urge to place on slender protective hand on her tiny little bump.

Part 32

Faith winced as she placed the damp cloth to the cut above her eye. Her head was beggining to throb and the stinging cut was making her suck air in through her teeth in pain.
It was three in the morning and she was alone in her room. Almost an hour ago David had come home drunk and another fight had followed, one that resulted in a number of cuts and bruises and a swollen lip for Faith. David had then left and Faith highly suspected that he had gone to Candy's for the night. Everyone else was out too, well except mike but Faith suspected he was too drugged up to notuce anything and anyway he'd probably congratulate David on a job well done, he didnt like Faith very much. Selene was at a party with Steve who'd mugged the tickets from some drunk jack the lad he'd found in the street. And Jamie? He'd been missing from the house for two days now but no one was worried. They did that sometimes, they all did, just up and left for a few days and then turned up out of the blue like nothing had happened.
Faith rubbed a bruise on her stomach and remembered the baby. Her instinct was to panick. Was it ok?. Then she remembered what she was going to do.
She pulled open the drawer beside her bed and pushed the bowl of water away, instead reaching inside the drawer for a small rectangle of paper. A piece of paper that had on it the date and time of when Faith was going to kill her baby. Or at least thats what it felt like. She hadn't expected to feel like this. She wanted to get rid of the baby, she really did but she couldnt help feeling like this was murder, denying an innocent life survival. She tried not to think about it, she knew her fifteen year old mind was running away with her and that she had to be logical about this.
Just one more day and this would all be over. She could have her life back and stop worrying about the stupid baby. Her mind turned abruptly to her father, wondering what he would think of this mess but she shook her head violently to rid herself of the images of her father holding her child, a son, the picture of him but with Jamie's eyes. They were fake and they would never, could never happen.
Faith curled up on her bed, wrapping her knees to her chest and squeezing her eyes tight shut. She felt so alone and yet she had never been less alone. The baby was part of her, sharing her every living breath. That would all end soon and then she would be truly alone. Faith drifted off to a restless sleep. Just one day to go....

Part 33

Faith took a taxi to the clinic that morning. It wasnt far to go but Faith knew there was no way she could walk there. Walking would give her time to think, time to back out, besides she was scared and she didnt trust her legs to carry her. Selene lent her money for the cab fare, she was the only person who knew where Faith was and Faith planned to keep it that way. Jamie still hadnt come back and she was hoping that David never found out about any of this.
The journey was over too quickly for Faiths liking. She climbed out of the taxi and tried to ignore the look the driver gave her as he glanced from her young face to the clinic behind her, just as she tried to ignore the slight shake of his head as he handed over her change.
She took a deep breath in and walked decididly towards the clinic. The automatic doors opened for her with a load swish and Faith stepped forward to take in her surroundings. The clean tile floor gleamed and reflected faint shadows of nearby patients soon to be non expectant mothers. Faith noticed they all shared the same grim look on their face as they hid behind dated magazines or tried to burrow in partners shoulders and she knew what they were thinking:' This is my only choice, this is the right choice'.
Faith reported to the front desk and shrank back from the hard faced woman that greeted her, Faith decided this woman was definatly not a mother. She took Faiths details and instructed her to sit down, she would be called shortly. Faith sat down and watched as a young girl, only slightly older than herself, was lead away to the treatment room by a sympathetic nurse. The girl caught Faiths eye as she walked past and the pair shared a moment of unbelievable clarity. They both knew what this was like. The girl looked as scared as Faith felt and silent tears dripped down her face. Faith noticed the girls eyes flick back towards the door. Faith followed her gaze until her eyes fell on a man and woman, both middle aged, both wearing stern decisive looks on their faces. That was when Faith understood, the girl really didnt have a choice, she was being pushed into this. Faith felt her heart go out to this stranger and felt for her as the nurse led her away. For the first time in weeks Faith was glad her family weren't there with her.
Faith felt as though she was being torn in two as her stomach gave a familiar twitch. Was that her baby or was it nothing? Either way Faith knew that in just under an hour it would definatly be nothing. She thought about her own family, large as it was. Being one of five had is advantages and disadvantages but Faith had no doubt in her mind that her parents had wanted each and every one of her brothers and sisters. She had heard the story a million times, how her parents had fought for so long to have a child of their own and had almost given up the hope of being parents when their faith had been unexpectedly been rewarded in the shape of a little girl. Faith thought of her twin brother Jacob who had died and realised how even his passing was not as painful as it should have been because her parents had her. They were a mum and dad, all they ever wanted. She thought of her family now, torn apart and in dissallusion, with her mum alone to bring up six year old twins lilly and toby as well as mischeivous ryan at ten and timid but radient Alyss at fourteen. She thought of the turmoil in her family and what her parents had been through in the last fifteen years: Jacobs death, the kidnapping, the shooting, Neils reign of torment and her fathers recent death and she thought of the way her mother had once looked into her eyes and showered her with love and Faith realised something. She realised that if her parents could do it all over again they would probably do it exactly the same. She placed a hand on her stomach and thought of the baby she was about to destroy, Jamies baby. A nurse entered the room and Faith looked up.

Nurse: Faith Watts? Ms Watts?

Faith froze as she heard the name, it was a name almost never spoken in her house, a name with too many bad memories for her parents but it was the only name Faith was willing to give. Faith stood up and walked forward.

^^^^^^^

Hours later Faith would wonder how she had the guts to simply stand up and walk straight past the nurse towards the exit but then she would recognise a bit of the old Faith spirit in the action and would smile to herself. She wouldnt however forget what happened next.
She walked away from the clinic surprised at her own actions only to be trapped in a suffocating hug as familiar arms circled round her.

Faith: Jamie? What are you doing here?

He pulled away from her and held her at arms length

Jamie: I've been stupid Faith and I'm sorry. I went back to the house and Selene told me you were here. I want you to know that I still love you. I know you're young and we dont have the baby but I want thins to work...
Faith: We do...we do have the baby, I didnt do it Jamie I couldnt.

She watched as his face formed a gleeful smile and he pulled her back into a hug, muffling his tones of love into her bedraggled ringlets.

Jamie: I love you so much, I'll never let you go, never...

Faith let him carry on this ritual and basked in the feeling of being loved again, it wasnt the mothers love that she yearned so deeply for but it was love and it was enough. She cupped his hand and turned away from the clinic back towards the house.

^^^^^^^

Meanwhile across the street a beat up for escort pulled away from the Hope Street abortin clinic slowly. Its driver held a phone to his ear and dialled the number in slowly. A strange look on his face between glee and horror.

Steve: David...yeah mate its me...look are you sitting down cos you'll never guess who I just saw...

Part 34

Faith dialled the number slowly, her hands shaking slightly. She pushed the last button and pressed the phone to her ear. She was distracted slightly by Jamie who was sat behind her slowly running his hands through the long curtain of curls that fell across her backs, letting the golden corkscrews tumble through his fingers, but Faith was glad he was there, she couldnt do this without him.
They were completely alone. Everyone else had gone to a party but Faith had declined the invitation complaining of a headache, Selene assumed it was an after-effect of the abortion and didnt press the subject. No one knew Jamie was back yet.
It had been Jamies idea for Faith to call home. He said that if he and Faith were going to make a real go of it there had to be complete honesty and they had to start on a clean slate and that meant Faith had to start again with her family, they had to know she was there. Deep down Faith knew he was right, they never would be ok if she didnt make peace with her mother, but that didnt make what she was doing any easier.
Faith waited to hear the 'click' on the other end of the phone and held her breath.

Sharon: Hello

Faith felt a tear seep from her eye and hastily brushed it away before Jamie could see. Then she battled to find her voice again.

Faith: Mum its me, its Faith

Hundreds of miles away in a quiet road in Walford Sharon Rickman dropped the mug of tea she had been holding. Alyss rushed to mop it up and shot eager glances towards her mother at the faint sound of her older sisters voice. This was the first contact they'd had in months.

Sharon: Hi

It sounded so stupid, so pathetic and redundant but what else could she say.

Faith: Its good to hear your voice mum
Sharon: Its good to hear yours too, especially so close to your birthday.

Faith had almost forgotton that in just two days time she would be facing sweet 16 and thought back to her first meeting with David.

Faith:I'm nearly sixteen

She remembered his sickly laugh and how much had had loved it, she hadnt heard laughter like that in months.

Sharon: Its been six months Faith, I didnt think you'd ever call, so much had changed

That made Faiths heart ache, she thought of what she must have missed. The end of school, Alyss's birthday, Lillys dance recital, the boys football matches and the millions of tears and peals of laughter she must have missed.

Faith: Well I'm calling now

Her voice broke as she said it. Sharon waited then asked the question that had been burning insid eher for almost six months

Sharon: Why Faith, why did you leave like that?

Faith thought of the countless agonies she had secretly endured in the weeks runnign up to her leaving and gave the only answer she could.

Faith: Because I had to

Sharon felt her temper flare, 'because' wasnt good enough

Sharon: What do you mean, you didnt have to, no one made you leave.

Faith felt her own temper rise to match her mothers and Jamie stood up and walked over to Faiths dressing table, sitting on the small stool infront of it and idly playing with the trinket and bottles on the table.

Faith: No one made me stay either.
Sharon: What do you mean?
Faith: Well it was made pretty clear that I wasnt wanted in my own home

Sharon knew of Faiths temper but couldnt understand the bitterness in her voice, she really believed she hadnt been wanted. Then Sharon thought back on her actions, her words, her thoughts and realised that yes, maybe she did want Faith gone.

Sharon: How could you think that?

Faith couldnt help it, she shouted.

Faith : YOU ACUSED ME OF KILLING MY FATHER FOR GOD SAKE IT COULDNT HAVE BEEN MUCH CLEARER!

Downstairs Jamie head the front door slam and slipped out from Faiths room and down the stairs.
Sharon, fuelled by Faiths comment, shouted back

Sharon: WELL FOR ALL I KNOW YOU DID KILL HIM!

Alyss placed a hand on her mothers arm and signalled for Ryan, Toby and Lilly to leave the room, they didnt need to hear this. Alyss hated hearing them both like this but knew there was nothing she could do. This was something Sharon and Faith had to work out by themselves.
Faith took a deep breath, wiping tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand and placed her other hand on her slightly rounded stomach. She felt calmer but her body was still buzzing with anger, betrayal and grief which probably explains why she didnt hear the crashes and bangs coming from downstairs.

Faith: I didnt kill him mum you know that
Sahron: But I dont do I Faith cos even you dont know that, not for sure

She followed in a mocking tone

Sharon: You cant remember

Faith was about to reply that she really didnt remember when she heard a shout from downstairs followed by a bang and heavy footsteps on the stairs and landing leading towards her room. The door burst open revealing a fuminf David, his hands smeared in blood...Jamies blood.
Faith screamed, dropping the phone to the floor and making a dash for the door but she wasnt quick enough. David grabbed her round the throat and squeezed tightly.

David: No use trying to run Faith

The last thing Faith could remember after that was the dim voice of her mother, calling to her through the phone on the floor before the familiar feeling of becoming unconcious.

Part 35

Selene stormed from the taxi, leaving Steve to pay. She was surprised to find the door was unlocked and walked straight in. It was three in the morning and the party had ended dramatically for Steve when he drunkenly let slip that he had seen Faith and Jamie together and had told David. Selene of course promptly poured a full glass of red wine over his head and hailed the first taxi she could find.

Selene: How could you! Have you any idea what he'll do to them!
Steve: She was cheating on him, and with his brother no less. They deserve all they get

Selene shoved steve aside, not believing how insensitive he was being. Had he suddenly forgotton all the affairs David had? He'd even had the audacity to take Candy to the party while Faith was at home feeling ill.

Selene: FAITH! FAITH, JAMIE WHERE ARE YOU?!

It was late but Selene didnt care. She began to search the house, she had to find them, had to warn them both before David found them first.
First she ran up to Faiths room, it was there she found the turmoil. Make-up and perfume bottles smashed on the wall, bed covers in dissaray, a chair knocked over...but no Faith. Now frantic, Selene rushed through the other upstairs rooms finding nothing before hearing her name from downstairs.

Steve: SELENE!

She raced down the stairs, discarding her heeled shoes on the way. She ran down into the living room and found Steve standing over Jamies bloodied body. Steve was shaking, his hands at his mouth.

Steve: I didnt know Selene...i swear if I had...
Selene: Stop feeling sorry for yourself and call an ambulance.

Steve pulled out his mobile and did as she instructed. Selene knelt by Jamie

Selene: Oh Jamie, whats he done to you. How could he do this to his own brother!

Selene watched as for a fraction of a second Jamies eyes opened before closing again in exhaustion. Then his mouth opened and shakily he began to form words.

Jamie: Faith...you have to...

He coughed violenty, blood spitting from his mouth onto the carpet

Selene: Shh, shh it'll be ok
Jamie: You have to find her, he'll kill her Selene...her and the baby.
Selene: The baby? You mean...?
Jamie: She didnt do it Selene we we're leaving first thing tomorrow to start a family. David was never supposed to know.

She glanced at Steve who looked distraught and panick stricken

Selene: How he found out doesnt matter now. Have you any idea where they could have gone.
Jamie: He said something about taking her on a long drive to get some air in her lungs. He was taking her to the countryside. Selene...I think they went to the lake, to the boathouse

Selene looked at him hard. If they went to the wrong place the Faith could be dead while they were at the other end of the country.

Selene: Are you sure?
Jamie: I cant think of anywhere else he'd go. You have to find her Selene. You have to save her, you have to...

He coughed violently again and his eyes rolled in their sockets.

Selene: The ambulance will be here soon.
Jamie: We have to save her where we couldnt save Charlotte.

Selene looked down.

Selene: That was an accident
Jamie: If it was an accident then where the hell was David while Lot drowned in her own vomit.

Selene couldnt answer that question. She didnt like to think that sweet little Lots death was anything more than a tragic overdose.

Selene: I'll find Faith I promise.

Selene could hear the sirens outside and knew it was time to go. Jamie uttered one last breath before the paramedics came bursting in the room.

Jamie: Phone her mum Selene. Its in the phone. She needs her, tell her where she is.

Then Selene watched as his head lolled back and paramedics rushed forward pushing tubes down his throat and injecting him with various concoctions. Steve tried to hug her but she turned away.

Selene: You go with him there's something I need to do.
Steve: You sure?
Selene: I've got promises to keep

She walked to the door

Steve: Selene!

She turned

Steve: I didnt know about the baby, I promise. If I had...
Selene: I know

Tears trickled down her face as she bounded up the stairs and grabbed at the phone lying on the floor of Faiths bedroom. There was a call she had to make...

Part 36

The phone kept ringing. Selene knelt patiently on the floor of Faiths room among broken furniture and torn clothes, not caring that it wasnt even 4am and willing someone to answer.

Selene: Come on, pick up, pick up

It was on the third cycle of rings that a groggy Sharon finally answered.

Sharon: Hello?
Selene: Hi is that Faiths mum?

Selene felt stupid that this womans daughter was in serious danger and she didnt even know what her name was. There was a long pause on the other end of the phone.

Sharon: Its half three in the morning, if this is some kind of joke...
Selene: No! No its not a joke

Selene was desperate for sharon not to hang up

Selene: Its Faith she needs you
Sharon: Did she put you up to this?
Selene: Wha?I err..no?
Sharon: Just tell her I said all I wanted to earlier

Then it clicked. Of course, Faith had talked to her mother before David came, they must have argued.

Selene: Look I dont know what you two said but this is important.
Sharon: Faiths more than proved that she's more than capable of looking after herself, she cant need me that much.

Selene could hear the bitterness in Sharons voice and thought of how she must have cried for days when Faith had dissapeared. Of course what selene didnt know was that Sharon didnt cry at all, not a single salty tear drop. She was too angry and part of her was too glad. Glad that she no longer had to look Faith in the eye and wonder...
Selene had to make her realise.

Selene: Look Like I said I dont know what went on with you two and to be honest I dont care. From what Faiths told me you've already lost one person you love, do you really want to loose another?

The question hung loosly in the air and Sharon didnt answer.

Selene: You love her, deep down you must do...and I know you loved him, Faiths dad.

Selene stopped, this was risky, she knew very little of what had happened with dennis, only the outline Jamie had given her one bright evening almost a month ago at the beginning of september.

Selene:He wouldnt want her to get hurt just because you were angry would he?

There was silence. When Sharons voice did come it was quiet and laced with tears and choking sobs

Sharon: I cant forgive her...
Selene: You dont know if she's even done anything to forgive
Sharon: But she's knows something, and she wont tell me...wont tell anyone...
Selene: For gods sake stop being so selfish!

Selene's comment shocked Sharon immediatly into silence but Selene didnt stop

Selene: Fair enough its been hard for you but stop and think about Faith for a minute. You have a beautiful young daughter who, from what I've heard, has been through more heartache in her joy than most adults and she's still only a kid. In some way shape or form, she was there when her dad died and it scares the hell out of her that she doesnt know what happened. She blames herself for something she's not even sure she did and her whole family and everyone she ever loved think she killed the person at the centre of her childhood universe, the father she adored. How would you feel?

She knew the odd girl on the phone didnt want and answer but Sharon thought long and hard.

Sharon: Its her birthday tomorrow, sweet sixteen. September 29th,

That date had so many meanings. The first time she slept with Dennis, Faiths birthday, the day Jacob died...the day before dennis died. Sharon wondered if this girl knew it was nearly the anniversary of her husbands death, the man she had promised to love forever.......till death do them part...
Her voice was bearly a whisper but Selene heard what she wanted loud and clear.

Sharon: Where is she?

Selene gave her quick details of where the lake house was, she heard Sharon catch her breath but carried on regardless. She knew she may have just saved four lives that night. Jamie, the lover who knew too much, Sharon, the mother who refused to learn, Faith, the daughter who couldnt remember and the unborn baby who Selene was determined to show how good the world could be

Part 37

Faith woke up to the familiar throbbing in her head, she was really starting to get sick of being knocked out. The ground beneath her was soft and cushioned and she quickly realised she was lying on a bed. She pulled herself up and looked around the room, surveying the wooden walls, feeling the gentle breeze pass through the open patio doors and hearing the soft noise of almost still water lapping against sloping banks. She knew then immediatly where she was, the lake house. Panic surged through her. She didnt want to be there. Charlotte had died there. Where was David.
Slowly she got to her feet, shaking off the nausea and dizzyness she felt, and headed out of the room she had deduced was the bedroom. When she entered the sitting room David was waiting for her.

David: I was beginning to wonder if you'd ever wake up.

He was facing away from her towards another set of patio doors but he turned to her now, slowly making every move count. Looking at him Faith could see that his eyes were as cold as his voice and a shiver ran down her spine. Her hands fell from round her shoulders where she had been hugging herself and wandered to her waist to rest on her stomach. It was then she remembered. The baby. Faith had no way of knowing if her baby was ok and at the moment she feared for her own life as much as her childs.

Faith: I want to go home David

Her voice shook and she wondered at what point she had become scared of David: when he kidnapped her? When she slept with Jamie? That first night on the train?
David let out a hollow laugh.

David: I dont think so Faith, you see you've been a naughty girl and you have to pay...just like Jamie paid

Faiths head was spinning

Faith:Jamie? What have you done to him?
David: Lets just say I dont think we'll be seeing him again
Faith: Oh God no...please no...

Faith sank to her knees on the cream carpeted floor and held a sob in her throat as David towered over her. He couldnt be dead, he just couldnt be.
David looked down at Faith as she sobbed for the brother he'd left close to dead and his fists clenched at his side.

David: Get up and stop snivelling

She didnt move

David: I SAID GET UP!!!!

She trembled and slowly rose to her feet but she couldnt stop the tears. david grabbed her by the throat and pulled her towards him, she let out a small yelp.

David: Stop your **********g crying or I'll snap your little neck

Faith closed her eyes and silent tears slipped from beneath her eyelids.
David let out a roar and pusshed across the room. Faiths tears slowly subsided, she could mourn Jamie later, right now she needed to keep herself and their baby alive. She sat up on the floor and rubbed her neck, bringing out and angry red handprint.

David: Your pathetic

Faith rose to her feet

Faith: I'm not pathetic

She said it with such conviction but deep down she felt pathetic. She didnt feel brave or confident or any of the things that had once set her apart from her brothers and sisters. She felt weak and helpless and didnt know where that old Faith had gone, the Faith who had laughed, who had smiled and joked, the Faith who had loved life and lived it to the full. This Faith had a strong feeling that the old Faith had left the day her father died.

David: You are pathetic
Faith: I'm not
David: look around you Faith, no one cares about you, your own family think you're a murderer so what does that tell you. No one cares
Faith: They do! They do care...

Tears began to roll down her cheeks again

David: They dont. You're nothing but a useless pathetic little girl. You're worthless Faith

Faith stood still as visions of the old Faith flooded her eyes.
She rememebered her family and the life they once shared. She remembered playing with her dad and spending time with Alyss when she was a baby, she remembered ry and the twins birth and thought back to being a toddler, she remembered being shot and a hand drifted the the scar beneath her heart that seemed to burn through the fabric of her shirt. She remembered how it had felt as the cold metal bullet had passed through her chest and remembered how she had thoguht she was dying. She remembered her last words for her mother and sister, her fathers tearstained face looking down at her and remembered years later when neil had tried to kill her.
Faith knew what it was like to slip away. She knew what it was like to die and as a child it had only served to make her cherish life and live every minute but she wasnt a child anymore. She knew what it was like to be told you're life meant nothing and she was sick of it.
Faith gave a small smile at the memories and that was that. She looked up towards David and a familiar glint was visible in her eyes. The old Faith was back

Part 38

Faith: You're the worthless one David.
David: Huh thats what you...
Faith: No shut up its my turn to talk. I bet you've spent your whole life with people listening to you havent you, people doing whatever you said. Take Jamie for example, he used to idolise you. He thought you were the best big brother anyone could have, you protected him but when push came to shove he stayed away from me because he was scared of you. Now what does that tell you?

David moved his lips to answer

Faith: That was a rhetorical question you idiot.
David: What did you call me?
Faith: Oh deaf and stupid now are we? You're such an idiot David, you think I'm pathetic but I pity you because one day you are gonna wake up and realise that the world does not revolve around you.

Faith looked him straight in the eye. He stared back at her shocked and irritated.

Faith: Whats wrong David? Not used to people standing up to you?
David: You should be thanking me
Faith: What?
David: I took you in, gave you a place to live
Faith: Actually you took me home and Steve and Selene gave me a place to live
David: If it wasnt for me you'd be living on the streets infact I bet you wouldnt even be alive now, or you'd have cleared off back home to mommy dearest.
Faith: Shut up you dont know what you're talking about.
David: I know enough to know that you owe me and the only way you've repaid me so far is by sleeping with my brother
Faith: You cheated on me first remember
David: Oh so thats your excuse is it
Faith: I dont do excuses, my reason is that I love him
David: Dont you mean loved him, if I did my job right he's dead

Faith felt herself shudder and forced Jamie from her mind

Faith: You're a murderer David, thats nothing to be proud of
David: Yeah you would know wouldnt you. After all thats why you came here in the first place. We're the same you and I Faith. I killed my brother and you murdered your father.

Faith stumbled backwards but managed to stay standing. She had never heard those words before. No one had ever actually told her she was a murderer. It made her sick inside to know that it was probably true.

Faith: I dont have to listen to this

She turned away from David and walked out through the nearest set of patio doors. Outside she realised just how secluded the house was. Trees surrounded it from almost every angle although Faith could see the main road meandering through the trees in the distance. The lake itself was so close that when she walked mear metres away from the house the gentle slow waves lapped at her feet and slipped gracefully over her shoes. She quickly worked out that she must be miles away from Brighton and looked down at her watch. It was 9:45am meaning that they must be miles away from Brighton. Faith also realised the date, September 28th, the day before her birthday, a day that now held so many bad associations
Faith heard David step onto the pebble floor behind her. She turned round slowly, the autumn wind whipping at her hair, blinding her in a sea of golden strands. David stepped towards her. She didnt move away, there was nowhere to run.

David: You're not going anywhere Faith, and dont get any glorious ideas about people coming to save you because no one has any idea where we are.
Faith: But I know where we are...this is where Lot died.

Faith missed the flicker of recognition on his face but didnt need it to know she was right. Then Faith looked at him, properly looked at him. She saw the look in his eyes, the faint evil smile that danced on his lips and she knew the truth

Faith: Oh God...

David looked at her as her hand flew to her mouth then dropped back to her side.

Faith: You killed her didnt you, you killed Charlotte.

So sorry I haven't posted this in a while but its becoming really hard to write the end cos I'm still not sure what I want to happen. Hope you like this part though, here goes...

Part 39

David shot Faith and evil grin that spead maliciously across his face. He stepped towards Faith, she edged back, her feet dipping into the shallow waters of the lake.

Faith: Oh God...I dont...oh God
David: You sound so surprised Faith. I dont know why.

He took another step forwards, Faith took another step back.

Faith: You loved Lot and even if you didnt you have to have cared about her.
David: Do I, do I really have to?
Faith: David...

It was a plea. The whine and desperation in her voice was barely audible but Faith knew it was there. She needed to know he cared. She needed to know that the man she had been sleeping with wasn't a monster.

Faith: She trusted you.
David: Ahh yes...that...

He began pacing small circles in front of her. Away from her then back towards her. Faith couldn’t move she was too scared; instead she stood rooted to the spot letting the cool water from the lake lap against her ankles in a rhythmic pattern, calming her nerves.

David: Yes, I won’t deny she trusted me, and she loved me and she cared about me and she spent all her time with me and doted on me and depended on me.

He stopped pacing and stared at her.

David: It was bloody annoying
Faith: She loved you, she needed you
David: She needed me and she never left my bloody side
Faith: So you killed her?....For being clingy!!

Faith knew then that no one would ever understand David. He killed Lot for being clingy and he was probably going to kill her for not being clingy enough
He was pacing again.

David: No I didn’t kill her for being clingy I’m not that bad Fay

He laughed but Faith wasn’t convinced it was a joke.

David: She was gonna leave me Faith, mousy little Lot had finally plucked up the courage to leave me. She knew, of course, about the affairs, everyone did
Faith: What do you mean ‘did’, you don’t exactly hide Lola and Candy away from me do you?

He laughed again

David: No I don’t suppose I do

David stared hard at her.

David: You know you’re a lot like her you know. When I first met Charlotte she was just like you, alone, confused...

He continued to stare at Faith and she felt her knees go weak with nerves.

David: I bet you don’t even know what she looked like do you?
Faith: I don’t need to. She’s dead; you killed her I don’t need to know anything more about her.
David: But you want to don’t you. You want to know why you’re so similar, where you both went wrong.

Faith didn’t reply, she cast her eyes downwards, trying to block out the sound of David’s voice

David: She was pretty too but she didn’t look like you. She was taller, with straight dark hair. Her eyes were deep blue, almost black. She was thin and graceful in a kind of unconfident way

He stopped, his eyes were glazed over. He was lifted from his reflections and looked back at Faith whose eyes were still cats towards the pebbles and water beneath her.

David: She’d had it tough too but worse than you, her family didn’t just hate her, they wanted her dead. Her step-dad used to beat her. One day he went too far and Lot left. Just like you she had no plan of what she was going to do, not that is until she found me...

Faith looked up at him, green eyes meeting hazel ones.

David: ...and just like you she betrayed me. Something you should know about me Faith, I’m easily bored and I have very little patience. Lot seemed ok with the affairs. She went on with her life as if nothing was wrong but deep down I was just waiting for the day she snapped and sure enough that day came.

Faith held her breath. Here it was, the reason that Charlotte had died, the reason David had killed her and the reason Faith herself had wondered about for what seemed like forever...

Part 40

Faith stood still waiting for Davids confession. He put his hands to his head, scraping his fingers roughly through his hair before dropping his hands back to his sides.
Faith felt fully prepared for his confession. She was prepared for him to admit that he had killed Lot in cold blood for no reason but she was prepared for the words that next left his lips.

David: She was going to leave me Fay, Lot was going to leave.

Faith stopped to think this over. From what she had been told about her she found it hard to believe that mousy little Lot could ever pluck up enough courage to leave David. Faith just didnt understand it. In the end she responded with the only word she could.

Faith: Why?

David leered at her

David: Why d'you think

Faith just stared at him blankly before David uttered the one word she least expected.

David: Jamie

Faith stood still and waited for the impact of his words

David: Your beloved Jamie is the reason that Lot decided to leave me.
Faith: What? I dont understand.

David looked angry and stared at her as if she was stupid

David:She was in love with him Faith. She had enough of me, enough of the affairs and I suppose she saw dear little Jamie as a rosy alternative.

David dint try to soften his words and Faith was left reeling. She thought back to when Jamie had first told her about Lot: the tears in his eyes, the pained expressions on his face, the saddness in his voice. It all made sense now. That was why Jamie had been reluctant to persue a relationship with her, because he'd done the same thing with Lot and she'd paid for it with her life. A million different images and possibilities swirled through Faiths mind. She felt like she had been lied to. As if she was just Lots replacement in both David and Jamies bed, just another girl to soften the blow for the loss of the last one. The worst thing was she couldnt even ask Jamie about it. If what David said was true then Jamie was dead and Faith could never ask him about anything ever again.
Faith swallowed hard and tried to breathe normally. Her toes were numb from the water and her head felt heavy with them new information that was forcing its way in.

Faith: So what happened?

She wasnt sure the wanted to know but she had to ask. David looked at her with a new emotion swimming in his eyes that Faith couldnt quiet work out. It was a cross between pride and upset, like a small child recounting how they recieved an injury. Faith wondered if that was all Charlotte had been: a pain, a blemish and her death ahd been nothing for David but an unhappy incident.

David: You really want to know?
Faith: I think I need to know

David looked at her and edged forward with his arm out to her. She took another step backwards into the water shaking her head and David sighed, dropped his arm and started him story.

David: I brought her hear to patch things up, a nice little weekend, or at least it was supposed to be. I'd realised that no matter how awful I'd been to her what she'd done with Jamie had evened the odds and all I wanted to do was clear the air and start over.

Faith wasnt sure about his theory about them being even but didnt say anything.

David:It started out great. We even decided to stay away from the drugs the first day, we agreed, we didnt need them. We just did normal stuff, swimming, sunbathing and all the boyfriend/girlfriend stuff in between.

Faith felt slightly ill at the nochalent smile plastered on his face

David: I thought we'd be ok, I thought she'd get over her problems and we could go back to how things were. It was the second day when I realised things would never be the same, when I realised that she was nothing but a selfish liar.

Faith heard all the spite and malice in his voice and wondered how one person could hate someone else with such a passion but couldnt find the same capacity to love.

Faith: What do you mean? What had she done?
David: She'd broken our pact. The second morning I decided it could be fun to just do a few lines of the stuff we'd brought, nothing heavy, just enough to get her in the right mood if you know what I mean.

Faith did and her stomach flipped at the thought.

David: When I went to get the stuff some was missing. The lying little b***h had been at it the day before without me knowing.
Faith: So you killed her for taking yor drugs?
David: No I was willing to forgive that but on my way back to the bedroom I heard something I wasnt willing to forgive. She was on the phone. To Jamie. We'd come away for the weekend and all she could do was phone home and talk dirty to lover boy. When I confronted her about it she didnt seem to care, she said she was leaving me for good, said she didnt want me and never would. looking back on it she was probably high at the time but I wasnt really thinking about it then. I knew I had to teach her. Teach her a lesson she'd never forget.

part 41

A tingle ran right down Faiths spine

David:I knew she'd feel ill when she came down from whatever high she was on, she always did. Stupid Lot never could handle herself. I played the doting boyfriend, hugged her, kissed her, helped her into bed. I told her I'd run her a bath but that before that what she really needed was a quick fix, an automatic high. I had some coke left a friend had given me, good stuff too. I made a big show of preparing it infront of her, humming to myself and making big gestures, she giggled like a school girl at the sick sight of it. I drew up just enough to tip her over the edge. Then when the time was right I led her to the bathroom, a hot bath of frothy bubbles just waiting for her.

He paused and changed the tone of his voice to make it calmer

David: I hadnt meant to kill her Faith, not to start with. I helped her into the bath and sat opposite her on the toilet seat. For a while I just stared at her then when the drugs kicked in I began the torments. I told her she was a bad girl, a dirty girl. The drugs made everything I said seem ten times worse. She was crying so much, I couldnt tell where her tears ended and the bathwater began.

He laughed as if he'd made a joke but Faith wasnt smiling.

David: She started seeing things, thought other people were there with us. That was when I siezed the oportunity to scare her. I sat on the edge of the bath and pushed her. It wasnt a big push, I only wanted to scare her.

Faith scoffed at how defensive he was being.

David:I thought that if I scared her then she wouldnt leave
Faith: Thats way warped David, you do know that right

He just glared at her then resumed his story.

David: I held her down in the water, she struggled so hard but I held her down tight till I could feel her give in then I pulled her back up. All the time I was shouting at her, for the drugs, for Jamie, for being a two bit little whore. I did it a few more times but then when I pulled her up the fourth time she didnt splutter and cry like the other times, she dug her nails in my face instead. I jumped back and looked in the mirror. The little tart had made me bleed, she was gonna pay. When I turned back to the bath I saw Lot trying to scramble out of it and towards the door. I couldnt let her get away, I just couldnt. I grabbed the only thing I could, her hair.

He paused again but still didnt seem phased by his own actions and continued in the same level tone.

David: She slipped on the bathmat and hit her head on the bath. I can still remember the scream she gave as she fell and the noise her head made as it split open. There was so much blood, it was everywhere.
Faith: So you knocked her out and just left her there!

David looked startled and surprised.

David: She wasnt knocked out Faith, Lot was very much awake.

Faith breathed in sharply and David smiled evily.

David: When I saw the blood I couldnt think straight, I thought she was dead but she wasnt. I sat back on the toilet seat and tried to take it all in when I heard her raspy voice asking my name. She couldnt see me, she was facing the other way and besides, I dont think her eyesight was up to much by then, she was still drugged up to the eyeballs. So I sat there
Faith: You just...you just sat there.
David: I sat there and I watched her. I watched her as she writhed around in a pool of her own blood, as she cried my name,I watched as her eyes rolled in her head and she moaned in agony, watched as she gagged on her own vomit, watched as...
Faith: STOP! STOP! STOP!, Please David just stop!

Tears flowed freely down her face, causing rippled in the water at her feet. She couldnt hear any more, she couldnt bare to hear how he had watched as the girl who had thought he loved her had died, a girl who she herself so closely mirrored.

David: You wanted to know Fay

He seemed odly pleased with himself. Faith was suddenly angry as it dawned on her that he really didnt care. This beautiful, charming, fragile girl had loved him and he'd just abused her and used her. Even as she died he had taunted her and he didnt even care, didnt miss her, wasnt bothered that she was gone.

Faith: I know but I didnt want that.
David: Well thats the truth Faith. All people die, thats life
Faith: Not all people are murdered.
David: SHE CHEATED ON ME!!!
Faith: What like I cheated on you? People break up, thats life too David.
David: What Lot did was nothing compared to you. Lot was infatuated with Jamie, you...you...love him

David spat the word 'love' as if it hurt to say.

David: And now you have that...that...thing!

He pointed towards her bump which Faith quickly ran a protective hand over.

David: Lot paid for what she did and now you'll pay too...

David stepped towards her.....

Part 42

David: Lot paid for what she did and now you'll pay too...

David stepped towards her.....

Faith stumbled blindly backwards, tears running down her face, the water now reaching past her knees She was so confused, she didnt know what she wanted anymore. David was going to kill her unless she did something quick and she didnt know what she wanted. She didnt know who she was anymore.
Her passport and permantent records told her she was Faith Angela Rickman, daughter of Sharon and Dennis Rickman, born 29th September, twin to Jacob Daniel, sister to Alyss Amara, Ryan Peter, Toby Mark and Lilly Madison, that was what her passport said. Her family said different, they told her she was the eldest daughter, their golden girl and now their fallen angel. And her own heart...she didnt know anymore. Somewhere along the way she'd forgotten who she was and now it was crunch time and she needed to know. She needed to know whether or not her life was worth living, she needed to know what happened with her dad, she needed to know whethere or not she was the kind of person that deserved to live, that deserved to be saved.
She couldnt read the emotions in Davids eyes but she didnt need to. She knew what he wanted to do from his actions. Every ounce of his being indicated that he wanted her dead. He stepped towards her, arms outstretched towards Faiths neck.Faith was stil contemplating her life when David changed the pace and charged towards her. Faith tried to move quickly but the water dragged on her legs and the sharpness of the action caused her to lose her balance.
She fell backwards into the water and winced as the icy water enveloped her legs. Her back grazed against the rough pebbles that lined the lake and her hands stung as she sliced her palm on a jagged rock nearby. Her thoughts barely registered as Davids knees crept either side of her and his hands circled around her neck, forcing her down into the water...

^^^^^^^

Sharon pushed harder on the accelerator as Selene figeted in the seat beside her

Selene: If we dont get ther soon...
Sharon: I know! I know ok, I dont need to hear it again
Selene: Then put your foot down because unless we get there soon Faith is as good as dead.

Sharon nodded towards the younger woman and increased her pressure on the accelerator. They would get there in time, they had to.

^^^^^^^

Faith struggled as the heavy material of her jeans dragged her down towards the deeper part of the lake. She couldnt breathe. Her chest was tight and painful. She couldnt hold her breath any longer and Faith gasped, tasting the stagnant lake water as it flew over her lips and mixed with the metalic taste of her own blood in her mouth. She felt paralysed as the icy water stabbed at her throat. Her head felt light and proper thoughts failed to form.

^^^^^^^

Sharon drummed her finger on the steering wheel hammered at the horn infront of her to try dislodge the traffic jam. This wasnt fast enough, they weren't going to make it.

^^^^^^^

Davids fingers dug into Faiths arms as she struggled with him and fought against the urge to breathe in yet more water. She had no breathe left. She went light headed and images began to flash before her eyes along with tiny pin pricks of colour that Faith knew where the beginings of unconsciousness. She welcomed them then, the lack of pain, the peace that she felt. She welcomed death then. Then something inside her stired and Faiths mood changed as she felt it...a small, weak, defensless kick.

.................................................. .................................................. ...

29 hours later Faith Angela Rickman woke up in intensive care........

Hi had a really bad time recently with this story. Several people have said I should try to get it published in some form or another so I've sent edited versions to people like my english teacher, and local companies and magazines but no writing competition will go near it becasue its too long to be published as a short story. Nearly all writing competitions ask for stories to be no more than 4000 words trouble is this is over 26000 worda already and its not finished so I've all but given up on that idea however I have posted it on other sites and reviews have been good so you never know :)
I've decided this will be 50 parts long now including the epilogue so just 7 parts left. I go on holiday next thursday for 2 weeks but I'll try get this done before then.

Part 43

The blinding bright lights burned her eyes at first. She was warm and dry and safe and a million other things that had come to feel alien to her. The plain hospital sheets were itchy on her legs and Faith turned round trying to move them away. Sharon was at her side in an instant.
Faith turned her head away, delaying the moment when she would have to face her mother for the first time in over 6 months.

Sharon: Faith? Faith honey are you ok.

Her voice was soft and light but Faith could hear the strain behind it. She shuffled round on the bed to face her mother who sat in a chair beside her. Sharon smiled gently at her, she looked as though she had been crying but Faith couldnt be sure.

Sharon: Seems like I've spent half my life at your hospital bedside in some way or another.

Faith gave a small smile and expelled air from her nose in a little half laugh. She tried to sit up and noticed for the first time how much she ached. She placed a hand on the bed to push herself up and accidently brushed her stomach as she went. Her face went white and she turned to her mother in distress, wondering how best to convey her concerns.

Faith: Am I...I mean am I ok. Is everything ok. Is my...my...my...

In the end she didnt need to, Sharon already knew

Sharon: The babys fine Faith.

Faith tried to look her mother in the eyes but found she was unable to meet her gaze. For the first time since she walked away from the abortion clinic Faith felt ashamed of herself. She wondered what her mother was thinking and for the briefest of moments she wondered what her father would have thought of the situation. Thjats what it was now. Or at least it felt that way. Her baby had just become a situation, something that had to be dealt with, a problem to be solved. It wasnt that people her age didnt have babies everyday, they did. It was that people like Faith didnt. She was from a good family, raised well in a good part of town and now she was just another member of the population that fell into the chatagory of a teenage mum with all the stigma that went with it.
She finally raised her eyes to her mothers but was unable to read the expression on her face.

Faith: How...how did you know.
Sharon: Well I must say the bumps a bit of a givaway Faith but apart from that I heard the nurses talking. They think everythings fine but their keeping an eye on you.

Faith dared to ask the question she was afraid to know the answer to.

Faith: Are you mad?

Faith looked to her mother with tears in her eyes and Sharons heart broke. She wanted to comfort her daughter but something was still holding her back. She settled for kind words instead.

Sharon:No Faith I'm not mad, just surprised.
Faith: What do you mean surprised?

A tiny bubble of anger flared in sharons throat

Sharon: Well what am I supposed to be, yes I'm surprised. You go missing and then six months later i get a call from a random stranger telling me that my now pregnant daughter has been kidnapped by a homicidal maniac and could I come and save her pretty please.

Sharon finished her outburst by throwing her hands in the air and Faith couldnt help but giggle. Sharon scowled at her daughter before joining her in filling the private room with peels of laughter. However the laughing quickly slowed and died and Faith changed her voice, giving it a more serious tone.

Faith: A lot happened mum, a lot changed...I changed.
Sharon: What did happen?
Faith: I really dont want to talk about it now, and anyway, its not important, whats important is the future, me and my family and my baby.
Sharon: The babys dad doesnt feature in this plan then.

Faiths heart stung at the loss of Jamie

Faith: He...he isnt around anymore
Sharon: Oh I was under the impression that the young man waiting outside with your sister was the dad, he certainly cares a great deal about you.
Faith: Huh?
Sharon: There's a kid outside with Alyss, looks about your age, brown hair, green eyes, looks a bit beat up. Ringing any bells?
Faith; Oh my god...he told me...he said...

Faiths eyes filled with tears

Faith: Jamie? Jamies here? He's alive?

Sharon was bewildered by her daughter reaction and offered a comforting pat on the bag, edging her chair forward.

Sharon: Well he was last time I checked sweetpea

Faith couldnt believe it. He was alive and her mum was here and wait...did her mum say Alyss was too? Everything was happening so fast, she was still trying to process the events of the last day but it was all becoming too much. The tears flowed without permission as Faith was reduced to a wash of tears in her mothers arms.

Part 44

Jamie peered through the glass on the door of Faiths private room and watched as she dissolved to tears in her mothers arms.
He rung his hands and looked at the floor, shifting his feet uncomfortably. He couldnt stand this waiting.

:She'll be ok you know

Jamie looked up to see Alyss sat serenely on the chair a few feet from him across the corridor. He dropped his hands to his side and walked over, dropping into the seet next to her.

Jamie: We dont know that
Alyss: I do

Alyss looked to the empty, plastic coffee cup in her hands the back to Jamie. He was shocked by how a girl who looked as young as Alyss did could be so confident, sure and clear of her convictions.

Jamie: How old are you?

Alyss blinked as though not understanding the question when in truth she was wondering why it had been asked.

Alyss: I was 15 july 12th
Jamie: But then...

Alyss understood then

Alyss: There's only 10 months between me and Fay
Jamie: Oh
Alyss: Its ok we get it all the time
Jamie: Right

It was a simple reply but Jmaie was suddenly burning with questions as to how this calm 15 year old knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that her sister was going to be ok. Alyss seemed to read his thoughts and offered more reassurance with her next comment.

Alyss: She will be ok, dont worry
Jamie: How can I not worry? How can you be so sure that she'll be fine?

To that Alyss gave the first answer that came to her

Alyss: Because she always is
Jamie: Huh?

Alyss looked straight ahead and her peaceful expression clouded momentarily. She turned back to Jamie and answered his question with all her natural born grace and honesty.

Alyss: The thing with Faith is...bad things happen...and they usually happen to her. She's had a hard life. Hel, this is the third time she's nearly died and no matter what I say thats got to affect a person.

She paused, her own doubts over her sisters metal well-being surfacing.

Alyss: Concidering everything thats happened to her Faith should be cold and cynical and feel as though the whole worlds against her but she doesnt and thats the most amazing thing. Faith loves life. She always used to laugh and joke, she's so smart and funny and brave and I dont know what I'd do without her. Thats how I know she'll be ok because she has to be and appart from that if I know anything about Faith its that she's too damn stubborn to let a little thing like a near death experience beat her

Alyss laughed a little and Jamie had to smile. It was so strange being around people who knew so much more than him about Faith. A happy silence filtered through the air until Alyss gave a wonky smile and turned back to Jamie.

Alyss: So you and my sister are having a baby, guess that kinda makes us family.

Jamie shifted akwardly

Jamie: Yeah guess so

Alyss looked at him, the tranquil expression now firmy back in place, her green eyes staring at him with innocent intent.

Alyss: So is she looking forward to being a mum? I mean its so hard to imagine.

the increasing shade of pink on Alyss's cheeks was now spreading through Jamies

Jamie: Yeah I think she's looking forward to it
Alyss: you think?
Jamie: She is. She wants this baby, she's looking forward to it we both are.
Alyss: mmmm...boy or girl?
Jamie: Huh?
Alyss: Is it a boy or a girl?
Jamie: We dont know yet. Too early
Alyss: Which would you like?
Jamie: Dont know, boy I suppose
Alyss: So you dont want a girl?

Jamie began to feel uneasy. God this girl was good he couldnt help but think. Alyss was finding it way too easy to pick to pieces everything he said.

Jamie: I dont mind, I just want a nice healthy baby
Alyss: So you dont want a disabled baby?
Jamie: Of course not!
Alyss: So if your baby is disabled you dont want it
Jamie: Thats not what I said. Look can we not talk about this.
Alyss: sure lets talk about Faith instead. Are you gonna move in together?
Jamie: I d'no we haven't discussed it.
Alyss: Will you marry her?
Jamie: I...I...I...

Jamie was finally spared from Alyss's interigation when sharon stepped out of Faiths room, closing the door behind her. Her face was tearstained but she was smiling. She sniffed loudly

Sharon: Alyss, she wants to see you.

Alyss stepped forward and walked towards the door completely ignoring Jamie as she went. Her palm felt for the cold door handle as she prepared to face the sister that had been 7 months absent form her life.

Part 45

Alyss tentively pushed the door open. Faith looked up and smiled at her from the hospital bed. Alyss gave her a shaky smile back and turned to close the door behind her. When she turned back round to face her sister she watched as Faith slipped out of bed, her hospital gown falling gracefully over her small bump and brushing her ankles when she stood up and walked across the room, enveloping Alyss in a tight hug. They stayed that way for a while until Faith felt the shakes and sobs her sister had begun to emit. Faith pulled away and held Alyss's small frame at arms length.

Faith: What are you crying for?
Alyss: I just...I just...I just missed you so much...and now you're hear...alive...and pregnant...and its a shock...and i love you...and I just...I just

Alyss dissolved to tears much like Faith herself had just moments before. Faith threw an arm around her younger siblings shoulders and guided her towards the chair by her bed before pushing herself back onto the mattress and swinging her legs to and fro over the sides.
After a few minutes Alyss's sobbing subsided and she looked to Faith. She was greeted with a warm smile and felt forced to return the gesture

Faith: Thats better, I didnt mean to make you cry
Alyss: You didnt, its just like i said its a shock seeing you like this thats all...

She trailed off unsure of what to say next. An air of tension washed over the pair. faith spoke next in a attempt to salvage the limited conversation.

Faith: So how have things been?

Alyss gave her a look

Faith: That bad huh?
Alyss: Things have been hard
Faith: Like what?
Alyss: Mums struggled. She doesnt admit it but its hard for her without dad.

It was the first time their father had been mentioned and Alyss looked at Faith to gauge her reaction.

Alyss: You know what it was like. We were just about holding it together ... then you left and everything got that bit harder.

Faith resented the guilty feeling that swept over her and made her tingle from head to toe.

Alyss: I thing Ryan took it the worst. He said it was mums fault you left. He stopped talking to us. The twins just didnt understand.

Faith shifted nervously

Faith: It wasnt mums fault, or at least it wasnt just her fault. A lot of stuff happened and I just couldnt handle it anymore.
Alyss: Thats what I dont get, you're the strongest person I know. After everything we've been through together...all the times...I just...I suppose...

Faith understood then.

Faith: You're mad a me

Alyss looked guiltily away and remained silent.

Faith: You are, aren't you. You're mad that I couldnt tell you. You blame me.

It wasnt a question.

Alyss: What do you expect Faith of course I blame you. I blame you for how things have been the last year.
Faith: I dont believe this...after everything...
Alyss: Faith I love you and I dont know whats happened the past seven months but I think...
Faith: What? You're the smart one Alyss what is it you think?

Alyss looked at her then, all smiles and pretences forgotten.

Alyss: I know things havent always been easy for you but I think...I think sometimes you play on it.
Faith: What!
Alyss: I think you've spent the last 16 years of your life being a victim and you're losing the ability to feel anything but sorry for yourself.

Faith stood up and began to pace the room trying to quell the bubble of anger that was rising through her throat.

Faith: What do you want me to do Alyss I cant just forget everything thats happened. Apparently neither can you.

Alyss put her head in her hands and rubbed her temples. Faith or shouting. She sat back on the bed and absently rubbed her stomach, saying nothing until Alyss looked up at her.

Alyss: Why did you do it Faith? You just...left.
Faith: I left because...because I couldnt stay
Alyss: Why? What was so bad that you had to leave like that, in the middle of the night, without a word to any of us? Did you even consider what it would be like for us?

Faith shook her head slowly and exhaled.

Faith: How can you even ask me that. You dont understand Alyss.
Alyss: I might if you'd just talk to me.
Faith: Thats what you dont get, I couldnt talk to you! I couldnt talk to anyone!
Alyss: You could've talked to me!

Alyss was on her feet, her voiced raised in a manner so unlike the Alyss Faith had once known.

Faith: Have you been listening to a word I've said? I. Couldnt. Talk. To. Anyone!
Alyss: Why not?
Faith: Because I just couldnt ok. I left because I couldnt stand the way people looked at me, I couldnt stand the not knowing, I was sick of feeling guilty for something I didnt know if I did. You all thought I killed dad!

Alyss looked down at her, stern and defient.

Alyss: Weel none of us would know anything about that now would we Faith thanks to your pesky little memory loss.

The splashes of sarcasm practically pooled at her feet as she spat the words at Faith. Faith looked at her, anger sparking in her hazel eyes.

Faith: Thats not fair.
Alyss: Life's not fair.
Faith: I remember Alyss, believe me, I remember.
Alyss: Well then now's your chance isnt it Faith. Did you do it?
Faith: What do you want me to say? Do you want me to be guilty, to tell you that I murdered our father?
Alyss: I dont know, did you? I just want the truth.
Faith: And if I cant give you it?
Alyss: Well then I'll just have to make my own assumptions wont I. Did you Fay? Did you kill dad?

Faith sighed, looked at Alyss and began to talk. It was time for the truth.

Hi guys thanks for the replies, sorry about the suspense lol here's the next bit

Part 46

15 minutes later and Alyss wiped away the last of her tears. She looked at Faith who was staring at her hands as she twisted them in her lap. She looked up at Alyss, her face wet and still shining with her own tears.

Faith: I'm glad I told you Ally

She tried to smile but Alyss looked away, her face blank and unreadable. Faith began to feel uneasy and shrank back beneath the covers of the bed beneath her sisters gaze.

Faith: Alyss?

Her voice was quiet and shaky. Her face was stinging and she moved her hands to rub the sticky tears from her face. She looked at Alyss, silently pleading with her to give a response, something...anything.

Faith: Alyss, please, say something.

The desperation had crept into her voice and Alyss finally looked at Faith.

Alyss: Is that the truth?
Faith: What do you...? Of course its true. I wouldnt lie about something like this. I dont lie, you know that.
Alyss: I dont know you anymore.

It was a statement with virtually no feeling behind it. Faith wanted to cry but refused to weaken infront of Alyss.

Faith: I am not lying
Alyss: How long then?
Faith: Huh?
Alyss: How long?!!!

She repeated herself as though it would be easier for Faith to understand the second time round. It wasnt.

Faith: What do you mean, 'How long?'

Alyss lost her temper. She shoved her chair backwards and moved so she was as far away from Faith as possible and leant against the wall. When she did speak it was through gritted teeth and she refused to make eye contact with Faith.

Alyss: How long have you known what happened?

Faith opened her mouth to answer.

Faith: I...

Alyss never gave her the chance.

Alyss: I mean is it a week, a month, god forbid a year. How long?
Faith: Alyss why are you being like this?
Alyss: I just want to know. If what you've told me is true then how long have you known? How long have you been keeping this a secret?

Faith opened her mouth in a wide O of shock.

Faith: I have not been keeping this a secret. All this year, I really didnt know, I swear to you. I told you I dont lie.
Alyss: And I told you, I dont know you. I dont trust you anymore.
Faith: Why are you acting like this? I told you what you wanted to know Ally. I told you what happened.
Alyss: Yeah and now I'm asking you how long have you known?
Faith: Ally...
Alyss: For god sake Faith stop with the 'Ally, Ally' and answer the damn question.
Faith: Hours ok, I've known hours. no wait a second, if its that important i could probably put it into minutes for you.
Alyss: Dont try to be clever Faith it doesnt suit you.
Faith: Then you stop being stupid.
Alyss: A minute ago I was the smart one.
Faith: A minute ago you weren't acting like a spoilt brat!

Both teens were fuming but surprisingly it was Faith that blew first.

Alyss: Yeah maybe I am a spoilt brat but i figure maybe its my turn. Afterall you've been a spoilt brat for the last 16 years!
Faith: Hey wait just a minute!
Alyss: No I wont wait just a minute. I've spent the last 15 years playing second best and now this...this...

Alyss seemed unable to finish the sentence.

Faith: I still dont know why all this is coming up now.
Alyss: I'll tell you why shall I : because he chose you
Faith: What?

Alyss looked her straight in the eye.

Alyss: He died and his last thought must have been about you. He put you before me and ryan and the twins and mum, just like he always did. So in that respect Faith everyone's right. Its your fault he's dead. I blame you for dads death.

Faith suddenly felt as if she was back in the lake. She was cold all over and she felt as though she couldnt breath. The air was heavy and suffocating. It felt like the world was collapsing. Faith felt her eyes prickle but was spared the embarassment of losing face and crying infront of Alyss when the door opened and in walked Jamie. Alyss whipped her head away from Faith and her eyes flitted briefly over Jamie before she stormed past him, through the door, past her waiting mother and down the corridor. Jamie turned towards Faith and gave her a weak smile.

Jamie: I dont think she likes me too much.

Faith took one look at him and the door that still swung on its hinges behind him and burst into tears. He was at her side in an instant, soothing her with calm words and gentle touches.

Faith: Its not you, its me she doesnt like.

He pulled her into a hug and softly stroked her hair as she sobbed into his chest. Then as suddenly as it had started her crying stopped. Faith placed her small hands on the damp patch of shirt her tears had created and pushedamie gently back although she allowed him the space he had occupied next to her on the bed.

Faith: I cant do this Jamie. David tried to kill me, my own mother hardly knows me anymore, i though you were dead, my sister hates me...

Jamie: Wait a minute! You thought I was what?!!!

Faith looked at him, her pretty hazel eyes still sparkling with tears.

Faith: David told me he'd killed you.

Jamie ran a faint hand down the side of her face.

Jamie: Well, looks like he was wrong doesnt it.

Jamie tried to smile but Faith mirrored his movement and ran a slender finger down his face, letting it brush over one of his now purpling bruises.

Faith: Looks like he wasnt too far off.

Jamie sighed and caught both of her hands in his own, pressing soft kisses to her palm and knucles.

Jamie: I'm fine, bruises heal.

Faith looked away and thats when it happened. For the first time in months the bullet scar that marred her chest began to burn and her mind flitted back to Alyss.

Faith: No Jamie, not all bruises heal

Hi thanks for the replies as always its nice to know what you think. I have started my new story Rescue me but dont worry I will still finish this and a fourth sequel is definitely in the pipeline for this autumn. :)

Part 47

Jamie suddenly realised that there he was, sat infront of one of the most beautiful girls, no women her had ever seen, a young woman with so many qualities and intrigues, a woman who was carrying his child, a woman with whom he was prepared to spend the rest of his life with...and he knew hardly anything about her. He had no idea of the trials and tribulations she had been through in her short life. He had no clues as to her family life and if he was brutally honest he had no idea why she had abandoned it all and ran away. He suddenly felt inadequate and wondered how best to comfort the fallen angel before him. he touched her arm and willed her to look at him.

Jamie: Faith? Faith look at me.

She grudgingly complied. Jamie smiled.

Jamie: We were all so worried about you.
Faith: Sorry
Jamie: Dont be. Its not your fault its mine and that idiot brother of mine.

Faith glanced away again then looked back at Jamie.

Faith: It all happened so fast. One minute I was talking to my mum and you were there and then David was there and...and...then...well i dont know after that, it was all kinda blackish till I woke up.
Jamie: Faith, what...I mean can you...what happened after that?

Faith looked at him and knew that she couldnt avoid the conversation she was about to have

Faith: We talked, well argued really. He told me things.
Jamie: What like trying to kill me?

Jamie made a harsh noise in the back of his throat and Faith continued slowly and cautiously.

Faith: Yes, that...among other things.
Jamie: What other things?

Jamie let go of Faiths hands and shuffled off the bed, settling instead in the chair beside it. Faith whole body immediatly ached at the loss. Jamie frowned at her but Faith couldnt stop now.

Faith: We, erm, well, we talked about Charlotte.

Jamie seemed surprised.

Jamie: David talked to you about Lot?
Faith: Yes

Now he just seemed confused.

Jamie: W...why?

Faith gave an exasperated sigh and lost her patience.

Faith: Dont be stupid Jamie, we were where she died. He knew I knew about her. It was me that brought her up.

Jmaie looked uncomfortable and shuffled in the chair

Jamie: Oh, so...what did you talk about?
Faith: I thought we'd done this one already, we talked about Charlotte
Jamie: I got that Faith, what about Charlotte?
Faith: About...

She stopped, unsure of how best to phrase it. In the end she settled for the most simple reply.

Faith: We talked about how she died
Jamie: What do you mean 'how she died'? She took an overdose and slipped in the bathroom.
Faith: Yes...and no
Jamie: What do you mean Faith?

Faith looked at him, her eyes full of sympathy

Faith: Lot's death wasnt an accident, David killed her, I'm sorry Jamie

And she was sorry. For the briefest moment she thought she saw a tear in his eye and then she was even more sorry for putting him in that position. Then she looked back and the tear was gone and Jamie was talking again.

Jamie: I dont understand, how...why...how?
Faith: That doesnt matter now

She could spare him those details at least.

Jamie: Why then?

He looked at her with such desperation.

Faith: You and Lot were close weren't you?
Jamie: She was my best friend, like a sister

Faith thought back to when Jamie had used almost the exact same words to describe the relationship she herself shared with him and wondered how different things could have been.

Faith: You were going to run away together
Jamie: Not run away. Dont make it sound like that. She was gonna leave David and we were going to go away. I was her friend, I was going to help her get her life back.
Faith: Only she changed her mind didnt she
Jamie: She said he'd changed. She was going to give him another chance. I reckon she was drugged up at the time but its not like I could say anything. If he ever found out she was gonna leave he'd kill her.

Faith blinked at him, her eyes large an apologetic. Jamie soon realised.

Jamie: Oh God no...I...I

His head was in his hands now

Jamie: How did he know?
Faith: It would seem that Lot wasnt good at keeping secrets when she was stoned

Jamie was quiet and Faith couldnt help herself

Faith: She called you, the day she died she called you

Jamie looked at her but didnt talk

Faith: You weren't just friends were you, she loved you

Jamie finally looked at her

Jamie: Yeah I think she did but it was never mutual. I ended it long before she died. When she phoned she said she loved me, she was drugged and I hung up on her. No one knew about us Faith, it only lasted a few weeks, no one knew.
Faith: David knew

Jamie turned so Faith couldnt see his face. Faith suddenly felt the inexplicable need to make him feel better

Faith: It wasnt your fault Jamie

He looked up. He looked angry, Faith felt nervous

Jamie: I know, it was Davids and when I get my hands on him...so help me god he'll pay if its the last thing i do

Faith broke Jamies gaze

Faith: Dont say things like that Jmaie, not now.
Jamie: Why not he deserves all he bloody gets.

Faith was once again relieved to hear the click of the door opening and attempted a smile as her mother walked in. Sharon looked from her daughter to Jamie and noted the sudden chill in the air

Sharon: Sorry if I'm interupting, I'll wait outside
Faith: No mum its fine

Jamie gave Faith a look that suggested otherwise but Sharon sat down anyway

Sharon: Faith what happened with Alyss. She walked straight out of here to the cafeteria and refuses to come back.
Faith: We had a fight, I told her something
Sharon: Told her what?

Faith looked at her mothers loving eyes and relaxed expression and made her decision.

Faith: Mum I think its time you knew what happened to dad

Part 48

* One year ago *

Dennis stood at the bottom of the stairs and shouted.

Dennis: Come on Faith, we'll never get there at this rate!
Faith: COMING!

Faith swept the comb through her curls one more time and took a final look in the mirror. Then she threw the comb in her bag and proceeded to swing the bag over her shoulder before heading out of the bedroom and skipping down the stairs.
Her dad met her at the bottom leaning against the banister. He smiled, she smiled back.

Dennis: Have you said goodbye to your mum?
Faith: Yep
Dennis: Alyss? Ryan?
Faith: Yep yep
Dennis: And the...
Faith: Yes dad I've seen Toby and Lilly too.
Dennis: Good...Right...Got all your stuff?

Faith sighed and half laughed

Faith: Yes dad I'm ready now can we go or it'll be my next birthday before we get there.

Dennis laughed and with a shake of his head he tossed her the car keys. She eagerly ran to the car and threw her bag in the boot before practically leaping into the front passenger seat and beginning the patient wait for her dad who was saying a final goodbye to his wife.

Sharon: Promise you'll drive safe.
Dennis: Scouts honour
Sharon: I'm serious Dennis
Dennis: Ok, yes I'll drive safe. Anyway its not like I plan to wrap the car round a tree is it?
Sharon: Dennis!
Dennis: Sorry luv. I'll call you when I get there k?
Sharon: You'd better

He smiled and kissed her lovingly.

Sharon: And keep and eye on Faith. That girls too curious for her own good.

Dennis started to walk towards the car but turned to reply to her

Dennis: Dont worry, I will. We'll both be fine. I'll see you Monday

He climbed into the car, grinned at his daughter and started the car

Dennis: Is it just me or does she worry more every year?

Faith laughed, he was right. She nodded along to the song on the radio, some Madonna number she didn’t recall the name of and as her and Dennis pulled out of the street she thought back to the other birthday trips they had shared. They’d done this every year since Faith was five. That first year the trip had been a reward for pulling through her latest operation and the shooting. It had been her dads idea. They’d all gone to Disney land: Sharon, Dennis, Alyss and Faith. After that Faiths birthday trip had become something of a tradition, always lasting just a weekend but with its destinations as varied as the participants.
Sharon stopped coming the year the twins were born, she said five children were just too many to keep occupied in a car at once. Ryan had come once or twice but he was easily bored and didn’t see why he had to come, after all as he saw it it was ‘Faiths thing’. This year even Alyss had opted out of the trip on the grounds that she had to practice for her next flute exam and a science test the following week. Faith didn’t know why she bothered, she always passed.
Faith decided she didn’t mind them not being there. She enjoyed spending time with her dad and she was determined to make the most of this years trip, after all at 15 she was under no illusions that these trips would last forever, she was getting too old for them and she knew it. She wasn’t a little girl anymore.

Part 49

The rest of the drive passed uneventfully and Faith watched happily as London smog and concrete gave way to so-called fresh air and country views.
Faith snuggled down into the seat and fell into a peaceful sleep. It was three hours later when she was woken by a rough shake from her father.

Dennis: Come on sweetpea, wake up

It was late and the pair had reached their destination. Dennis stopped the car and Faith climbed out of the door to survey her surroundings. The wooded clearing she found herself standing in was simply breathtaking and made Faith gasp. The ground was a rough mixture of soil and rocks giving it a deep terricota colour that was matched only by the leaves of the autumn trees that blanketed the clearing. The sky too was a mixture of burnt oranges and pinky hues that emerged only as the sun was in its final hour.
Dennis smiled at his daughter as he took in the scene then he broke the moment.

Dennis: Come on Faith grab your bag and lets get inside.

Faith hurried back to the car and briefly wondered where 'inside' was. Then she picked up her bag and followed her father towards the log cabin she had only just noticed. It was cute, that was the only word she could find for it. Even though it had two storeys the cabin was still small and retained all its charm. The original leaded windows and picturesque wooden door made Faith smile. She followed her father inside and set her bag down, stepping past him and exploring the rest of the cabin.
Dennis found her an hour later in the room she had christened hers.

Dennis: Come on then bed time
Faith: But dad its only...

She looked at her watch and was shocked to find it was much later than she had first thought. 11pm to be precise.

Dennis: Come on Faith, its getting late and we've lots to do tomorrow.

Faith smiled again at that and agreed, dissapearing into the bathroom to get changed for bed.
Later that night as Dennis turned out the lights and checked on Faith one last time he couldnt help but stop and stare at Faiths sleeping form. He gave a sad smile and wiped an emabaressing tear from his eye, she wasnt a little girl anymore

Part 49

28th of September 2005

It was still dark the next morning when Faiths eyes flicked open. She looked at her watch and groaned. It was 7am and in Faiths opinion way too early to be up on a Saturday. She tugged the covers over her head to block out the early morning sun and tossed and turned for another fifteen minutes in a vain attempt to reclaim the lost sleep but it the end the result was inevitable and in the battle of Faith versus sunshine, the sunshine won. Knowing then that the chances of getting more sleep were remote she hauled herself out of bed and lazily dressed in a plain green vest top and a pair of comfy jeans. Her hair proved less accommodating and she groaned and cursed as her bobble snapped and pinged across the room. She ran her fingers lightly through her loose ringlets and, unable to find another bobble, instead pushed her hair away from her face with a pale pink alice band. She then slipped out of the room, taking care not to wake her father as she tiptoed downstairs and found her way to the kitchen.
The large kitchen was one of only two rooms in the downstairs of the cottage. A large pine table created to rooms’ focal point and was stood squarely in the centre of the room, its smooth carved feet slanting slightly on the rustic floor tiles. After a short hunt round the kitchen Faith pulled a bowl from a high cupboard above the sink which contained, among other things, numerous herbs and spices that Faith couldn’t even pronounce, much less know the uses of. She sat at the table and poured the contents of a nearby cereal box into her bowl before adding the milk.
It was just as her spoon scraped up the last of the coco pops that a groggy Dennis appeared in the doorway. Faith had to laugh. His clothes were creased and askew , his hair tousled and unkempt.

Dennis: Morning

He stifled a yawn and Faith giggled

Faith: Morning dad, you err sleep well?

Dennis glared at her then let out a laugh

Dennis: Shut up you, make your old man a coffee so we can get out of this place and have some fun
Faith: Yes sir

Faith mock saluted and walked over to the kettle whilst Dennis laid his head on the table. Faith laughed again, it was going to be a long day.

^^^^^^^

Dennis: So looking forward to your birthday?

It was three hours later and the pair had just about reached the adventure centre.

Faith: Suppose so
Dennis: What’s that supposed to mean?
Faith: Well, it’s not like its going to be anything special, just the same as the last 14 other birthdays I’ve had.

Dennis shook his head at his first borns’ nonchalance. He could remember each and every one of her birthdays and had watched her grow up with more fascination and pride than anyone could ever comprehend. He had watched as she had blossomed first from a tiny babe in his wife’s arms to a child with a mind and attitude of her own and then to a young woman in her own right. Dennis knew that nothing about Faith could ever be boring or trivial. He’d loved the last fifteen years and could only imagine what the next fifteen would be like. He wanted to see it all. He wanted to see Faith leave school, graduate from college, get married, have children of her own and then he wanted to repeat the whole crazy cycle first with Alyss then with Ryan, Toby and Lilly.

Faith: Besides we never actually do anything on my birthday cos we’ve already had the trip

Dennis smiled, happy in the knowledge that Faith had no idea of the secret birthday party he and Sharon had planned for Sunday afternoon when they returned.
He stopped the car.

Dennis: Ok here we are

Faith hopped from the car and headed towards the entrance of the centre. Dennis rolled his eyes and shrugged his shoulders before following her. Great a day full of abseiling and kayaking, just what any self-respecting 44 year old wanted to be doing on his Saturday. It was a good job he loved his children.

^^^^^^^

Faith: You were so funny dad!

Faith laughed and snorted through her milkshake as Dennis nursed a twisted ankle.
It was a good job he loved his children, that’s all her could keep thinking.

Faith: You should have seen yourself dad, it was very cool.
Dennis: Oh yeah, remind me of that when I tell your mother.

Faiths face softened but the smile remained.

Faith: Sorry dad but the wall climbing was your idea.

Dennis laughed, it had been an hour since Faith had lost her footing on the wall, screamed like a two year old and grabbed onto her father for support. Needless to say Dennis’ ankle hurt as much now as it had when he had slipped from the floor and landed rather unceremoniously on the floor with Faith landing rather neatly and unscathed on top of him. As they sat now in the canteen Dennis could only shake his head.
He was snapped from his thoughts as one of the younger instructors came over to their table.

Instructor: Hi, I’m Tony, I was watching at the wall climbing activity. I just thought I’d come and check on that ankle.
Dennis: Well I’m not in the best shape but I think I’ll walk again

The pair shared a little laugh and Faith felt immediately left out as if it was some ‘guy’ thing.

Faith: Hi I’m Faith
Tony: Its very nice to meet you Faith, you were pretty good out on the wall today, how old are you?

Faith blushed at the compliment before answering the question.

Faith: Fifteen tomorrow
Dennis: Yeah in fact that’s why we’re here, little birthday trip. Thought I better show my little girl here some of the world before I lose her to boys and alcohol.

Faiths eyes widened and she felt instantly embarrassed at her fathers comments.

Tony: Oh well if you really want to see something you should head out into Rugely Forest. Just off track 32 there’s a wicked waterfall, and the lake’s amazing this time of year.

Faiths eyes lit up.

Faith: Oh can we dad, please
Dennis: I don't know Fay it’s a bit out of our way.
Faith: We can go tomorrow before we leave. Come on dad. Please!

Dennis looked at his daughters wide eyes.

Dennis: Fine but its just a fleeting trip, your mother’ll go spare if we’re late home.

Faith beamed at him.

Tony: Right well I better get off then. Take care of that leg and have fun tomorrow, have a good birthday Faith.
Faith: Maybe we’ll see you next year if we come back
Tony: Not likely, I go back home to the folks next week, only on a temporary contract here.
Faith: Oh well, it was nice meeting you then
Tony: You too see ya.

Faith smiled and went back to her milkshake.

Hi again here's the next part

Part 50

29th September 2005
Faith’s 15th Birthday
The day Dennis Riley died and everything changed…..

^^^^^^^

Faith eyes opened wide in amazement.

Faith: Dad come on, hurry up.

Faith skipped over another log and headed closer towards the small lake in the forest clearing. Dennis ran after her as he lagged behind her, neither as fit nor agile as his daughter. He caught up her and upon seeing her so close to the water his wife’s words immediately flashed through his mind

*Sharon: And keep and eye on Faith. That girls too curious for her own good*

Dennis hurried forward and shouted to Faith

Dennis: Be careful Fay

He caught up to her and stood at her side. She snorted and laughed.

Faith: Why dad is some great huge monster gonna leap out and get me?
Dennis: Haha, just be careful
Faith: Why, don't you trust me?

Faith pulled a face of mock hurt and Dennis laughed at her before setting down the picnic basket in the spot he had chosen and laying out the food. Faith stopped laughing and knelt down to help. The food was soon set out and the pair tucked in to their meal of sandwiches and various other picnic snacks.

Faith: Dad, in case I forget and turn into a spoilt brat the minute we get home, I had fun this weekend.

Dennis looked at his daughter, noting for the millionth time in her life how much she looked like her mother and smiled.

Dennis: Me too Faith, me too

Dennis laid back on the chequered blanket and Faith quickly followed. The pair were soon asleep as their bodies rested in the secluded spot whilst the midday sun shone down on them.

^^^^^^^

Faith was the first to wake up. Her body ached but she quickly realised that that was the consequence of lying on the forest floor for over and hour. Her watch said 1:15pm. Faith glanced at the lake then back at her dad as he snored on the blanket beside her. Surely they were in no real rush to be home, faith thought, five more minutes wouldn’t hurt, just a little dip.
She rushed to the waters edge, the sound of the waterfall gushing in the background. Faith pushed her sandals off of her feet and sucked in air as the cool water of the lake came into contact with her feet. The shorts she’d chosen to wear today meant that she could easily go for a paddle without her father ever knowing. She grinned at the cunningness of it all and moved over to where a step of fourteen stepping stones led a neat path to the waterfall. Faith pulled her tongue between her teeth and concentrated as she hopped from stone to stone. She took her time and observed how with each step the water became a darker shade of indigo as it deepened. The seventh stone gave way to the eighth and ninth and Faith nearly squealed with delight when she saw a small yellow fish swimming in front of the tenth stone. Just a few more she thought, just a few more. She could feel the water spray on her face now as she hopped onto the eleventh stone. Just a few more and she’d be able to reach out and touch the waterfall. She stared hard at the next stone and poised her leg ready to jump. It was then she heard it.

Dennis: FAITH!!!

Faith span her body round to face her father but it all happened too fast. She lost her footing and slipped on the uneven rock sending her tumbling into the deep water below. She didnt even have time to scream.

Dennis: NO!!!!

Dennis lept from the river bank, across the stones and dived into the water. The events that followed were pure chaos. The water swirled and hammered over his head as he floated closer to the waterfall but there was no sign of Faith. He looked around frantically before cursing the fact that he wasnt a good swimmer as he was pushed under the water. It was on the way cack up that her spotted Faith. She was just two metres away from him, her arms flailing in panic, her face pale and wet from a mixture of water and salty tears.

Faith: Dad! DAD!

She called for him and he reached her quickly, grabbing her around the waist as she clung deserately to his kneck. The waterfall was so close now, yet again Faith could feel as the cool water sprayed and spat at her only this time every droplet stung at her skin and she squeezed her eyes shut in pain. Dennis tried to drag them both over towards a rock, much like the stepping stones in appearance, but it was then that it happened. A strong undercurrent pushed the pair under and directly beneath the waterfall. Immediatly and through instinct Dennis threw Faith away from his body and clear of the drag of the waterfall. She spluttered and coughed as she reached the surface, then summoned all of her energy and dragged her body stone by stone to the shore where she promptly passed out.
When Faith woke up she knew she hadnt been out for long and yet everything was unclear in her mind. Her head was throbbing and shooting pains behind her eyes were so bad she vomited. She pushed herself up on aching arms and turned over. She looked around, her eyes bluring, not being able to make sense of what had happened. All she had were a few jumbled pictures that were flying around in her brain forming and uncoordinated jigsaw puzzle. Then she was something and one thing made sense.

Faith: Dad

It was barely a whisper but ithe word bounced off of nearby trees and pounded in Faiths ears. She crawled on her hands and knees to where her fathers body lay roughly ten yards away.
He was cool to the touch but Faith put it down to having been in the water and apart from that Faith couldnt see that he had hurt himself in any other way. She shook him, telling him quietly, then shouting, that they had to go, he had to wake up, Sharon would worry, he had to wake up, they had to go home. It was no use, however much Faith tried Dennis would not wake up. She pressed her head to his chest, her own breathing ragged and uneven and decided he was still breathing, she came to the conclusion that her must have hit his head but she couldnt see a mark and she didnt remember him hitting it. With every moment Faiths mind became more fogged and she realised she had to do something.
Ignoring the protests from the burning muscles in her back she pulled her dads form over her tiny shoulders and attempted to hoist him onto her back, she walked a few steps before collapsing into the dust and mud and panting heavily, her palms cut and sore. She pushed her fathers body over her back again and settled for crawling.
It wasnt easy. The pain from her arms and knees made her want to cry out everytime she moved but she kept going. She had reach the car, she had to reach the car, she had to reach...
After a while she forgot why she was doing it she just knew she had to keep moving. She was dimly aware of how dark it had suddenly become and stopped, rolling her fathers body away from her own and drawing her knees up into her waiting arms. She didnt know how long she had been moving, she didnt know how far she had come and she now had no idea where she was or which way to go next, most importantly she was struggling to remember how she had gotten there in the first place. All Faith knew was that her father was in trouble and she was the only one that could help, that was if he was til... she stopped, she couldnt think like that, she wouldnt think like that.
Faith looked over at Dennis and stared hard. He was breathing wasnt he? He had to be but as palms and fingers were pressed frantically to wristes and throats Faiths mind clogged more as she struggled to remember what she was doing and what she had been taught. Was it one finger or two, and what was that rule about using your thumb? She pressed two fingers clumsily to her dads wrist. Yes that was it...wasnt it? Yes it was. Was it? Her mind was fogging and all information was blurry. Dennis' eyes were closed. And was his chest moving? Should it move? It should move. Is it moving? She thought it was. She wanted it to move. Oh why wouldnt he open his eyes?
Faiths head fell to his chest and her brain gave up in exhaustion as she passed out once more. the last thing she did was smile as she convinced herself of a single solitary movement of her fathers chest and the tiny flutter of a heartbeat.

hi sorry I've been a really bad person and not written for ages lol but promise I will try to stay on track with this now cos there's only like 5 parts left. And btw sorry if some of the characters seem a little off in this part dont hate me

Part 51

The air stung with the weight of unspoken words. Dangerous words. Words that once spoken could not be taken back. Words that remained unspoken but demonstrated in ways that spoke louder than anything they could have said.

Anything.

Sharons steady gentle sobs had slowed now and she was gripping Faiths hand in a vice-like grip while Faith herself glanced over to Jamie who was struggling to make eye contact with her.

Faith: And thats...thats what happened

Sharon cleared her thraot and spoke to her daughter calmly, a steam of tears still tracing a perfect line down her cheeks and across her chin to land as tiny splashes of Faiths palm.

Sharon: How...how long?

Faith shuddered as her mother repeated the question Alyss had demanded the answer to but this time she didnt missunderstand the meaning.

Faith: I dont know, about a day. It came back sorta quick once I started to remember, in pieces but the first bits came back when I was in the lake. There I was fighting for my life, drowning, and all I could think was that if I could have remembered then I'd never have left home and none of this would have ever happened. And then I did, for the first time in a year I remembered part of that weekend, I remembered the picnic. After that it was easier to piece the rest together.

Sharon wasnt shouting but she wasnt saying anything either and for once Faith wasnt sure which one scared her more. Then Faith heard something, it was barely a whisper but it made the last six months seem irrelevant.

Sharon: I'm so sorry baby

Sharon pulled Faith into a hug and the women wept silently together

Sharon: All that time...all that time we wasted because I doubted you. Thankyou Fay, thankyou
Faith: For what?
Sharon: For giving me back my family

Faith contorted her face into a confused expression

Sharon: For the last year I've been completely in the dark about what happened that weekend. It got to the point where I didnt know my own family anymore, my husband died and all I knew was that the only person who could help me find out what had happened wasnt teling me. I didnt just lose my husband that day Faith I lost a daughter too. I stopped trusting you and I hated that I doubted you but how could I not. I know things were hard for you Fay but that'll all change now. Its over, I know the truth and I understand now. When your father died part of me was angry at him for leaving me but now I realise he wasnt being selfish, he was being selfless. He died saving one of the things thats most precious to me and for that I love him and I always will, just like I love you.

Brushed away tears re-formed in Faiths eyes as she gave her mother a watery smile.

Faith: I love you too mum.

She looked at Jamie but he wasnt looking back.

Faith: Jamie? What wrong

He looked up

Jamie: I'm being a selfish prat thats what wrong
Faith: Why?
Jamie: Its just, its all over now isnt it. Your safe and you remember and you have a family that love you. Its a life that doesnt include me Faith

Faiths first impulse was to agree with jamie, he was being selfish, but then her mother spoke and Faith softened.

Sharon: Excuse me but you're the father of my grandchild, I think that makes you very much a part of our lives. Dont you Faith?

Faith nodded, feeling somewhat guilty for not having given much thought to her unborn child before now.

Jamie: Really?
Sharon: Of course, we'll sort something out you'll see. Infact I've been thinking. How would you like to move in with us?
Jamie: I...I'd love to!
Sharon: Right well that settles it. The nurses want to come in now Faith and you should probably be getting some rest. We'll see you later. Come on Jamie we better go tell the kids the news and I should really find Alyss.
Jamie: Sure

He gave Faith a quick kiss on the cheek before exiting through the door. Sharon went to follow him but Faith stopped her.

Faith: Mum...
Sharon: Yeh?
Faith: If you blame me I understand

Faith didnt look up and sharon was almost lost for words

Sharon: Oh baby I dont blame you, how could you think that

Faith made a movement to reply but Sharon cut it before she had chance.

Sharon: You'll see, when you come home and we have Jamie with us everything'll be ok.

And with that she was gone. Faith pulled her knees up to her chest and buried her head. Everything was out of control again and Faith felt more lost than ever before. She was going home and Jamie was moving in and she was having his baby and...and...

And Faith had no idea if she wanted any of it, or even if she deserved any of it. She thought back to her mothers passing question asking how she could blame her and Faith knew the answer.

Because Faith blamed herself.

hi heres the next part, I've written all of this now so its just a matter of finding the time to type it up :) And by the way I do have one final story planned but I’ll only post it if you want me to so if you want me to post a short synopsis just say.

Part 52

Faith sat on her hospital bed, trainers tied tightly and her bag at her feet. She was going home and her mother and Jamie were due any minute. Faith looked at her watch for what seemed like the millionth time that hour and wondered where they were. She couldnt help but shamefully admit that she was glad they were late. As bad as she felt for it faith knew that the longer they were the further she was from going home and Faith knew that part of her was terrified at the prospect of going back to the home that she had been absent for for so long. Part fo Faith knew that going home meant facing up to the last 12 months and that was something Faith wasnt sure she was ready to do. Knowing now what had happened to her father, knowing the role she had in his death made her dread returning to a home that was bursting with memories of him, his photos, his clothes, his scent...his children. Faith couldnt even imagine what it would be like to see Ryan and the twins again. She knew that after seven months away from them they had to have changed but in her mind she could still picture their bright mischeivous faces. Toby and Ryan still appeared the double of their father, Ryans hair, though still paler than his brothers now turning a darker shade of auburn though his bottle green eyes would always betray him as his fathers son and she couldnt help but picture Toby as cute and endearing as ever, the six year olds hair matching perfectly with dark brown eyes that no one knew the origin of that had changed over the years from the hazel colour they had been when he was younger. In Faith mind she struggled to remember Lilly any other way than she had been the last time she had seen her on the night she left. She could picture perfectly the sleepy contented look her youngest sister had worn, her slightly-wavy auburn hair ruffled against the pillow as she settled back into sleep and her hazel eyes flickered shut.
Faith looked down to the bag at her feet at smiled at the thought of the worn rag doll that sat at the bottom of it. She'd almost forgotten about the doll she'd taken from Lilly's room all those months ago but now she could return it in person.
The of course there was Alyss...
In the two weeks Faith had spent in hospital Alyss had not once visited and Faith knew that once the pair of them were in the close confines of the family home a confrontation was innevitable.

?: Penny for your thoughts?

Faith looked up and her eyes locked with Sharons who was smiling.

Faith: Sorry I was miles away
Sharon: Yeah I noticed

She laughed a little

Sharon: Sorry I'm late, we had a little ...err thing at home and I had to sort it before I came to get you.

Faith gave a sad smile and knew what she meant

Faith:So how is Alyss?

Sharon frowned at her daughters intuitiveness, one of the few things that her and Alyss shared. Faith had instinctively known that her sister was the problem

Sharon: She's fine, it was just a...a little glitch, thats all
Faith: What kind of glitch?

Sharon sat down next to Faith on the edge of the bed and proceeded slowly.

Sharon: Well the thing is with Jamie moving in we've had to make a few changes to the sleeping arrangements and lets just say Alyss isnt too keen of sharing with Lilly so...
Faith: So what?
Sharon: So she's err moving out for a bit
Faith: She's WHAT!?
Sharon: Yeah well I'm not exactly happy about it either but its what she feels she needs to do and at fifteen I suppose I have to stop molly codling her. You know Alyss, give it a few days and she'll be back.

Faith didnt say anything and silence decended on the pair. Faith stood and grabbed her bag. Sharon opened the door for her and the pair stepped out of the room and down the empty hospital corridor towards the exit.

Sharon: Jamie's sorry he couldnt come.

Faith realised guiltily that she'd been so wrapped up in her own problems that it hadnt even registered that he wasnt there.

Faith: Why didnt he come?
Sharon: The police wanted a word.
Faith: Again? Didnt they speak to him last week?
Sharon :yeh but they just needed to clarify a few things.

Sharon hailed a cab and the pair slipped inside it giving swift instructions on their desired destination.

Faith: What did they have to go over?

Sharon looked at her daughters worried face and noticed that her hand had slipped to the small still alomost unnoticable curve of her stomach and sighed.

Sharon: They wanted to talk to him about his brother
Faith: Oh

She didnt know what else to say

Sharon:They cant find him, they think he knows what he's done and he's gone into hiding, maybe even gone abroad. They need to know if Jamie knows where he might have gone.
Faith: Oh
Sharon: They might want to talk to you, ask you some more stuff about what happened at the lake house.
Faith: But I already told them everything I know, I told them about David and I told them about dad, I dont know anymore.
Sharon: I know sweety I know but they just need to make sure and know you've had a chance to think maybe...
Faith: Maybe what! Maybe I'll have remembered something else he did to me! Or did they just not believe me the first time round!
Sharon: Calm down Faith. No ones having a go at you
Faith: Sorry

She didnt know why she was getting so worked up. She suddenly felt guarded and wanted to be alone again. Her hands fell to her sides and curled into tiny fists as she tipped her head forward letting her blonde curles slip infront of her eyes

Sharon: They're just trying to understand everything better so that when they do find him they can put him away for a very long time, do you understand?

Faith nodded her head slowly and Sharon noticed how young she suddenly seemed.

Sharon: I must admit, everyones a bit confused. I mean when I got there that girl...
Faith: Selene
Sharon: Yeah selene. She phoned the ambulance straight away while I went through the house and I just found you lying there at the side of the lake. I thought you were dead Fay. What happened?
Faith: I told you, we had a fight, we've been through this
Sharon: Yeh you told me about the fight but fights dont usually end with one person trying to drown the other. What happened after that?
Faith: I...I'm not sure

A lie

Sharon: There was no sign of David andywhere, did you see what happened to him, did he run off?
Faith: I was uncontious at the time, how should i know. Maybe he just left.

Another lie. Sharon looked at her daughter with hard hazel eyes that matched Faiths own perfectly.

Sharon: Faith, do you remember anything that happened?

Faith looked up at her with a relaxed face void of confusion and stared into her mothers warm trusting eyes.

Faith: No I dont remember

Sharon pulled Faith into a tight hug and sroked her hair whilst whispering that things would be ok, it would come back to her, it didnt matter if it didnt, she loved her, she was safe...
Faith had only one thought for the rest of the journey home: It was strange how easy the lies came.

Part 53

9 weeks later

A young girl walks into her betdroom and sits down at a desk. Her freshly cut blonde curls bob at their new length on her shoulders as she lowers herself into the chair and pulls a piece of crisp white paper towards her. She picks up he pen and begins to write

Dear Dad...

She pauses to think before looking back to the paper infront of her. She tries again.

Dear Dad

Its Xmas tomorrow and although its fifteen months since you died it still feels like yesterday. So much has changed. Everyone misses you and it still hurts so much everyday, especilly for mum. I think it always will hurt, maybe thats how its supposed to be, maybe thats the price we pay for being the ones who get left behind.
It was mum who suggested I write this. Her and sue, my counciller, think it will help me come to terms with whats happened, something about closure. I'm only doing it because it will make mum happy. Seeing the counciller is ok. She's nice, we talk but never about you, never about the 'accident', she knows I dont want to talk about that. She knows I wont share that.
Things are still not right with me any Alyss. After she moved in with Aunt Chrissie we stopped seeing her as much. She cant forgive me for what I did and she cant forgive mum for forgiving me. Someday we'll be ok, but I dont know when. She's a different person, a different Alyss to the one I left. She's grown up, they all have. Ryan's the little man of the house. He's decided he wants to learn to play the drums. Mum is less than thrilled but she'll come round. Its the kind of thing you would've done. Toby has joined the school football team and comes home covered in mud most days and Lilly is taking dance lessons, a right little ballerina. She seems to have finally understood that you're not coming back but she still talks about her daddy all the time and will tell anyone who will listen about the things you used to do...

The girl paused and placed a hand on her streched stomach

...Jamie's moved in with us. He fits right in. He gets on really well with mum and Ryan and the twins really like him too. I think I love him, no I know I love him but I hasnt been easy.
He'll be a good dad, I know he will and I know I'm young but I'll be a good mum. I'm not sure if I want a boy or a girl but either way in a few months we'll know. We only have a boys name picked out: Dennis Jacob. A boy would remind me of you, I dont know if thats good or not...

She paused again. She could hear the cleatter of plates downstairs signalling that dinner was almost ready but she had to finish the letter. It was important.

...I'll try to love my baby no matter what, just like you loved me and just like I'll always love you.

The girl brushed a tear from her eye.

... I kow your death wasnt my fault, at eats not directly. I didnt kill you but I didnt save you either. I know that if I hadnt been there that day, if I hadnt been so stupid then you'd still be alive. If you hadnt saved me you'd still be here for mum and Ryan and Alyss and Toby and Lilly and all the other people that need you. I cant help but feel responsible for what happened that day. The difference is, now I can see why you did it. You died for me to live my life and thats what I'm going to do. I'm going to live.
I'm always going to wonder how that day could've eneded different but my life has to be bigger than that one day. I have to move on, not forget, just move on.

The girl wiped her eyes again and shifted in her seat. Her eyes glanced over the desk and settled on an envelope she had torn open earlier that week.

I've been accepted at Roosevelt College. I've signed up for a few courses next term and they were willing to overlook the small matter of me not finishing school on the condition that I caught up this tern. I'm hoping to study part time once the baby's born. The college has a great creche...

The girl couldnt help it, she was proud of herself. A year ago it had felt like her whole world was collapsing and now she had her life back, she had a future.

...I want to be a child psychologist. After my life I think I'm more than qualified.

She smiled to herself then frowned wondering how best to end the letter.

I'm glad I wrote this. I neede to tell you that I love you and that I'm sorry for what happened but I also need to thank you. I need to thank you for giving me a second chance, a chance I can spend with Jamie and our baby. You always used to tell me that people can only be truly saved by themselves but you saved me that day and I think in some ways you've been saving me everyday since then. So thankyou, for my second chance, I just wish you were here to share it with me.
When the baby grows up I'll make sure they know all about you and how much of a hero you are...

The girl stopped again as he pen hovered above the paper and tears bounced onto it from her face.

...and I'll always love you dad, always.
Forever yours,
Faith
xxx

She folded the letter in half and placed it in an envelope. No address was readed. The intended recipient could never read this letter. This was for her. She placed it in her bag ready to post and opened the door, stepping into the cool hallway and answering the shouts of her sister.

Lilly: FAITH! DINNER!!
Faith: Coming!

She walked down the sairs and followed Lilly to the kitchen where she was greeted with a kiss and a hug from Jamie. She looked around the room and smiled at her family around the table. She was home.

Part 54

It was mid evening when it happened one night in early February.

Faith was alone and the house was empty. Earlier when Sharon and Jamie had gone out shopping Faith had feigned nonchalence at being forced to stay at home but now it was getting late, 7pm, and Faith prickled as her mind ran over the words Jamie and her mother had spoken before they left, stating that under no circumstance what so ever should she be out in 'her condition' Faith scoffed at the word 'condition'. It wasnt a disease it was a baby and Faith was beginning to get more than a little sick of peing treated like a paper doll not a person.
Thoroughly frustrated, she turned off the TV program she had been half watching and threw the remote down beside her on the sofa. She wondered fleetingly if Ryan and the twins had enjoyed themselves at whatever family activity aunt Chrissie had dragged them off to this time. The three of them were spending the night at her house with uncle Jake and cousins Hannah and James. Faith had always enjoyed going to their house with her siblings and spending time with her aunt and uncle, playing with the cousins she now rarely saw but, being close to in age, always felt a family bond to. However that was before Alyss had started living there, that was before she had met Jamie and that was before she had gotten pregnant and everyone she knew had started treating her as either a china doll or a disease. Yet again Jamie and her mother had taken the decision that Faith would be better off staying at home.
Faith stood up and walked slowly to the kitchen, cursing her baby for what felt like the millionth time in the eight months she had been pregnant. She'd be a good mother, she knew that but she didnt love her baby. She'd often seen the look her parents had had during the pregnancies of her younger siblings, the same awe filled look Jamie often shot her way now and knew beyond doubt that the same look wasnt reflected in her own eyes. She felt no connection to her child, no yearning or wanting infact she sometimes hated it. Faith never regretted walking away from the loney abortion clinic back in Brighton but she did often wish she had never gotten pregnant.
Faith watched as an old photograph slipped off the fridge. She bent slowly to pick it up and at the same time noted how the fridge looked exactly the same as it had since she had started school. Nothing was ever removed, only added. In the top corner Faith could see her very first report card, next to it a scribble picture of a girl with curly hair in a hospital bed that Faith knew was supposed to be herself and had been drawn by lilly when Faith had had her tonsils out. Below that was a big blue painting of a train Faith knew beyond doubt had to be a piece of Ryans early artwork and nearer the bottom stickers and certificates that Toby had received at playgroup. Random photographs were littered all across the fridge. The twins first birthday, Ryan on a trike, her parents beaming out at her on their honeymoon. It was no that Faith finally looked at the photo in her hand and as she did her heart broke. The tired worn paper memory was a simple picture taken at Faiths 6th birthday of herself, curls abundant and teeth showing in a bearlike grin as she half stared at the pink iced cake infront of her, Alyss, young and demure with her best lilac party dress on and a matching ribbon tied neatly in her straight brown hair as she too smiled radiently and finally stood behind the two girls, their father.
Faith took the photo and sat at the kitchen table placing it infront of her. They all looked so happy and it hurt. Faith could remember the day so clearly and knew that her father was still half laughing at something Sharon had said from behind the camera. Faiths arm was thrown around her sisters shoulders whilst Alyss's own were curled sweetly around Faiths waist. The pink cake infront of the pair glowed as the candles flickered and...
faith was snapped out of her nostalgic reflection as she heard the back door close and looked up to see Alyss stood infront of her, a backpack clutched in her hands. She looked as shocked to see Faith as Faith was to see her.

Alyss: What are you doing here?
Faith: I live here

Alyss had the grace to look slightly ashamed at the emphasise on I but recovered quickly.

Alyss: I thought you were going shopping
Faith: I couldnt go
Alyss: Oh...well I just came to get some stuff then I'll be out of your hair.

She moved to walk out of the room but even pregnant Faith was quicker than her and beat her to the doorway.

Faith: Wait!
Alyss: What?
Faith: How...err...how is everyone at Jake and Chrissies?

Alyss looked confused as to why her sister was talking to her at first but soon answered

Alyss: Fine I suppose, cramped and loud but fine. They're not exactly big on me practicing my violin and Hannah can be a pain sometimes but they're ok
Faith: Alyss...
Alyss: What Faith? Spit it out.
Faith: Move back here. Please

Alyss lost her temper

Alyss: And why on earth would I do that. Get it through you're thick head Faith I dont want to be around you!
Faith: But...but I miss you. I miss us
Alyss: Well get used to it cos I'm not coming back.

She pushed Faith causing her to stumble into the doorway and ran upstairs to collect the things she needed. Faith just stood there in shock and at that moment she didnt care about her mother or Jamie or the baby or even her dad, she just wanted back her little sister. The girl who she'd played with and plotted with and eaten birthday cake with. What had happened to that little girl and why did she hate Faith so much?

Part 55

Faith quickly regained her composure and walked back into the living room, glancing to the foot of the stairs and awaiting the sound of Alyss coming down them, she wasnt getting away with it that easy. Faith wanted this sorted once and for all, it had gone on too long and Faith wanted answers.
She didnt have to wait long. Alyss emerged not five minutes later with her bag now full to the brim of fresh clothes and possesions. As she stepped down the last of the stairs she took one look at Faith before turning away.

Alyss: I dont want to talk to you
Faith: Fine suit yourself but you're sure as god gonna listen to me.

Alyss threw her bag onto the nearby sofa, clothes tumpling from where the zip was broken. She stepped as close as she could to Faith and her hands curled at her side in small delicate fists

Alyss: I'm sick of listening, all I've ever done is listen. Listen to mum, listen to teachers, listen to you jabber on. I'm sick of it its my turn to talk
Faith: Well it would help if you actually had something to say.
Alyss: At least I dont talk about myself all the time
Faith: Yeah the funny thing is you do.

Alyss stepped away so her back was to Faith but didnt leave the room.

Faith: What happened to us Ally cos I sure as hell dont know.
Alyss: Dad died its as simple as that.
Faith: No, no it isnt. You were fine, we were fine until I remembered what happened. It isnt that dad died its how dad died. Now what did I do wrong?!
Alyss: Nothing...dad...
Faith: Dad? What did dad do?
Alyss: He chose you

Faith was stunned into silence, she literally didnt know what to say.

Alyss: He did what he always did and chose you

She turned round, rage and hurt painted on her young face.

Alyss: If you didnt exist he'd still be here. I wish you'd died instead of him that day, or better still I wish you'd never been born. He loved you better, he always did, ever since the day you were born. He once told me that he wasnt even that upset when Jacob died because he had you.
Faith: I'm sure thats not...
Alyss; You were perfect to him, the daughter he always wanted. Quick thinking, rebelious, pretty...the perfect child to show off. He loved you more than anyone, even mum sometimes but she accepted it because she loved him and who could ever compete with you. He adored you, you had everything. What did I have?

She was crying now but Faith didnt attempt to comfort her, she knew what the reaction would be if she tried.

Faith: You had a family. You think I asked for dad to like me best, you think I asked for all the attention, the limelight, the pressure. You dont know what its like always having to set an example, be the perfect daughter.
Alyss: See there you go again, 'Faith, our little martyr' try a new one Fay its getting old.
Faith: How can you be so bitter.
Alyss: Because he had everything to live for and at the end of the day he still decided he'd rather die for you than live for us. Do you know how that feels Faith, do you know what its like do know that your dad didnt love you enough to save himself. If you hadnt been stupid enough to go into the water that day, if he hadnt tried to save you, then he'd be here now instead of you and everyone would be a lot happier.

Faith just looked at her sister.

Faith: You've got no idea, have you. You dont know what its like to be me. You have no idea how hard my life is. This past year...
Alyss: This past year was all your fault, dad was you fault, people blaming you was your fault, running away was your fault.
Faith: I didnt have a choice we've been through this
Alyss: Yeah we have but I'm still not sure why you got with Jamies baby then carried on sleeping with his brother. Was that not your fault.

Faith couldnt stop herself and Alyss felt the pain of her sisters hand on her cheek before hearing the sharp 'slap' noise. Her hand drifted to her cheek as Faith stepped back, he own hand at her stomach.

Faith: I pity you Alyss because you're right, you'll always be second best, and d'you know why. I'll tell you. Its because you're right, dad did love me more, you were an after thought and when you did come along what was there to fall in love with: perfect little Alyss who never put a foor wrong and gently accepted the fact that she lived in the shadows while I bathed in the light. You're plain dull and boring Alyss and for some stupid reason I love you more than most things in this world but dad saved my life, that day not yours, and I refuse to wish I was dead, I refuse not to live because thats not what he wanted and if you cared for him at all or had any respect for the memories he gave us then you'll...

She stopped, face filled with an emotion Alyss didnt recognise but she was still to angry to care.

Alyss: What, that all, get half way through a sentence and forget you're snappy comeback?

Faith didnt reply merely placed a second hand on her bump and turned away from her sister.

Alyss: Faith?

Faith turned back round and Alyss noticed the look on her face. Pain.

Alyss: Faith? What?

Faith looked at her sister, he hazel eyes wide in pain and fear.

Faith: Alyss, its started, I think I'm in labour.

hi thanks for the replies you have no idea how hard this part was to write. There are no current plans for a further Faith sequel but who know, maybe after xmas I'll come back to her

Part 56

*Faith: Alyss, its started, I think I'm in labour.*

Alyss: Oh god!

Faith clutched an arm around her stomach and took a deep breath as she felt the steady trickle down her leg increase as her waters broke.

Faith: Oh god!
Alyss: What, what is it?

Alyss stepped closer before backing away again as Faith staggered ungracefully towards the couch.

Faith: I didn’t think it'd be this quick! I don’t know what to do! I can’t do this Ally, I can’t do this!

Alyss sidestepped the puddle that had formed on the carpet and knelt down in front of the sister placing her hand over Faiths.

Alyss: It ok Faith, it'll be ok. I'll get someone

She moved to get up but Faith grabbed the side of her shirt

Faith: No! Please Alyss don’t leave me, please don’t leave me!

Scared by her sister’s obvious distress Alyss sat back down on the sofa next to her sister.

Alyss: Fine but you have to let me ring an ambulance.

Alyss quickly whipped out her mobile phone and stabbed in the number before telling the person on the other end what was happening and where to come.

Alyss: They said they'll be as quick as they can
Faith: What if that’s not quick enough

Her words were punctuated with another wave of contractions and Faith let her head roll back onto the sofa.

Faith: It’s early, its not supposed to be this quick, too quick
Alyss: Shhhh, try to stay calm Fay
Faith: But my baby's not due yet, this isn’t right.
Alyss: Well maybe your kid's as stubborn and as impatient as you and just cant wait to meet it auntie.

Faith tried to smile but grimaced instead as her insides tightened again and a wave of pain shot through her whole body. Faith was crying now.

Faith: I can’t do this Alyss, I can’t
Alyss: Sure you can, you're the bravest person I know

Faith looked at her sister

Faith: I'm so sorry Alyss, for everything
Alyss: No I'm sorry. I was wrong, you didn’t let me down, I let you down
Faith: How about we were both wrong

The sisters managed a small laugh before Faith screwed her eyes up in pain.

Faith: What if I can’t do this Alyss. You must think I've been so stupid
Alyss: You’re not stupid and you can do this. Just hang on ok?
Faith: I don’t think I can Ally, it hurts so much
Alyss: For gods sake Faith you've been shot, beaten, nearly had your throat cut and been held under water till your lungs early popped and you complain about childbirth.
Faith: This isn’t funny Alyss
Alyss: I know I'm just saying you can do this, after what you've been through this should be nothing.

Alyss gave Faith her hand which she immediately regretted and glanced at her watch. Faith had been in labour for nearly twenty minutes now and was becoming more and more distressed. Alyss wasn’t sure how much longer she could hold on. Where the hell was that ambulance!

Alyss: Breath Faith, come on breath
Faith: I am breathing you idiot I'd be dead otherwise

Alyss let the idiot comment slide on account of her sister being in obvious pain but filed the comment away to use against her later.

Alyss: Your lemmas, Faith, remember the classes
Faith: Oh, that, I err kinda skipped a few
Alyss: How many is a few?
Faith: All of them
Alyss: Great.
Faith: Well I went to one but didn’t stay cos all the mums were older than me and Jamie wouldn’t come, mum was busy and I didn’t want to go alone.

Alyss felt guilty for the first time at leaving her sister for the past 4 and a half months.

Alyss: Ok Faith fair enough just try to stay calm ok?
Faith: I need to push Alyss
Alyss: You cant, just wait for the paramedics
Faith: I cant wait that long, I'm in agony. I NEED TO PUSH!

Alyss looked at her sister as she writhed on the sofa in pain and made a decision. She just hoped being an A* science student would pay off.

Alyss: Ok Faith ok

Alyss tugged at faiths leggings until they polled on the floor in front of her then pulled of her own jumper and placed in beside the trousers. She took a deep breath and hoped she was doing the right thing.

Alyss: Right Faith, listen to me ok. Push!

Faith dug her hands into the side of the sofa leaving small half moon indentations in the fabric and pushed until Alyss told her to stop. Faith took deep breaths, ignoring the burning sensation between her legs before pushing again on Alyss’s command. Alyss shivered as she sat in front of faith clad in just her thin cotton t-shirt and a pair of jeans to ward against the February breeze. She wasn’t shivering from the cold, she was scared. As Faith screamed and twisted and turned in front of her Alyss wanted to cry but there was no time for tears, not now.

Alyss: Nearly there Faith, come on just a bit more.

Faith took an extra deep breath and pushed as hard as she could, feeling a sudden sharp pain then a release of pressure as something warm and slippery slid from inside her and onto the fluffy jumper that Alyss had ready.
Faith fell back in relief, it was over. Faith was too delirious to notice but Alyss did not share her joy. She sat bent over the new human being as it lay, not moving on the pink sweater before her. Alyss ignored her hate of blood and rubbed her hand furiously all over the baby. Nothing. Now the tears came.

Alyss: Come on sweetie, dont do this. Your mums been through so much, we all have. Come on.

Instinct took over as she leant towards the baby and brought forward everything she had ever learnt from tv. She opened the baby's mouth and scooped away the spit and mucus that had collected inside , then with a skill unknown to her she swept down and forced her own breath into the small form. She pulled back and looked down expectantly. To her relief she was rewarded with a small mewling sound that soon grew into a cry. Alyss knew she'd never be happier than she was at that moment and as Faith, in her dreamlike state, looked down on her baby sister as paramedics rushed through the door, she knew she'd never be prouder of Alyss.

Hey thanks everyone that read and those of you who replied. Cant believe this is nearly over, just three parts left I think. :(, do have an idea for a sequal but still dont know if I'll go ahead with it.

Part 57

Faith slowly opened her eyes and groaned inwardly at the familiar sight of a hospital ceiling.

Alyss: I was beginning to wonder if you were ever going to wake up.

Faith turned to see Alyss sat beside her, and realised that she was holding her hand.

Faith: What...
Alyss: Happened? You passed out about two minutes after the paramedics got there, they said it was quite common, especially with quick labours. The stress and panic of it all just sends your body into shock and it makes you faint, you'll be ok though, nothing to worry about.
Faith: Oh

She closed her eyes, thinking hard to piece together the jigsaw puzzle of information in her head. Finally things started to make sense and she opened them again

Faith:Hows...
Alyss: Your baby? They took her away to be checked over, nothing to worry about, they just knew you'd need your rest. You can see her when you want.

Alyss smiled congenially at her but Faith was confused again.

Faith: Wait a minute. Her. I had a girl?
Alyss: Yep, a gorgeous little girl.

Faith furrowed her brow and thought hard again, still confused

Faith: I was so sure...
Alyss: Huh?

Faith hadnt realised she'd spoken aloud but now she looked at her sister with an honest face.

Faith: I was so sure it was going to be a boy
Alyss: Oh
Faith: Dont be like that. Its not a bad thing its just I was so sure, I'd convinced myself it was a boy. A boy that could take dads name, grow up with his family, be just like his grandad. It just felt right, wierd but right.

She sighed and Alyss said nothing.

Faith:Maybe its better this way. Yes, this is better, a girls's better.

Alyss looked at her sister but still said nothing. Faith turned to her and placed her right hand over where Alyss still clutched her left.

Faith: A girl means I can move, move on from dad, move on from that day. I'll never forget, part of me doesnt want to but at least with a girl it can be a fresh start, a boy would remind me too much.

Alyss nodded, knowing her sister was right.

Faith: Anyway, Jamie wanted a girl...wait, where is ...
Alyss: Jamie? I called him about ten minutes ago, he'll be here soon, mum too.

Faith smiled at her sister and knew that things were once again ok as far as their relationship was concerned. Theyw ere friends again and all was forgiven.

Faith: I love you Ally I hope you know that.
Alyss: I do, and I love you too, especially now I have a beautiful niece too

Faith leant forward and hugged Alyss tightly and whispered quickly and passionatly into her ear.

Faith: I love you so much Ally, promise me no matter what, promise me we'll always love each other. Promise Ally, promise.

Alyss pulled away and gazed into her sisters pleading eyes and noticed for the first time in months how young she suddenly looked, how lost. Alyss knew her sister needed this promise, the assurance that no matter how bad things were she'd always have someone to love her.
Alyss didnt have to think and nodded quickly, pulling Faith back into a hug. Alyss knew it was no small thing she had just promise dher sister but that didnt trouble her, after all with the way Alyss had acted over the past few months she figured she owed her a promise or two.

Hi guys thanks for the replies here's the next part.

Part 58

It was three days later before Faith got a real look at her daughter, although it seemed like everyone else in the whole of London had already cooed over her for hours. Sharon couldn’t be prouder, Jamie had declared her the most adorable thing he had ever seen and every nurse that Faith encountered told her of the countless minutes they had spent pressing their noses to the glass of her hospital crib.
However, that morning Faith was alone. Sharon had rushed to the shops yet again to no doubt fill her arms with yet more baby clothes, this time in various shades of pink, Jamie was watching over the twins and preparing the house for his girlfriend and daughters return, undoubtedly wondering which way up the step by step instructions on how to put together a cot went and the doctors had long ago finished their examinations on the child who’s hospital band read simply Baby Scott, taking Jamie’s surname, and had pronounced her small but perfectly healthy.
The room was almost completely silent except for the crisp sharp cries of Baby Scott as Faith lifted her daughter from the hospital crib beside her bed. She placed her gently onto the bed and stared down at her. She was beautiful; there was no doubt about that. Sharon had sworn that she looked exactly like baby Faith had but in truth Faith knew that the baby in front of her bore a far stronger resemblance to Jamie than herself. Her bright blue eyes were already tinted with hints of bottle green and the tiny curls in her daughter’s hair had already started to drop into nothing more than waves. Faith frowned at the inherent knowledge that her daughter’s dark blond hair would most likely have turned a pale shade of auburn before she was two. She looked from her button nose to each of her perfect fingers and toes and felt a tear slip down her cheek. She was instantly angry with herself. She was sick of crying and she was even angrier when she realised why she was doing it. Jealousy had settled in the pit of her stomach and was slowly making Faith feel sick. She looked at her daughter and knew without a shadow of a doubt that the baby looked more like Alyss than herself.
The baby looked up at Faith with bright eyes before scrunching her face up and letting out a cry. I an instant Faith was lifted from her thoughts and scooped the tiny being into her arms. Almost as quickly the baby stopped crying. Faith held her closer and couldn’t help but smile.

Faith: So that’s it is it. You wanted a cuddle from mummy did you?

And that was it. That was the moment Faith realised her whole life was now mapped out in front of her. She was a mummy. Forever. And the strangest thing was…it didn't bother her, in fact it was quite a calming prospect. Faith knew in those short few moments that she loved the child she held in her arms and nothing would ever change that. She loved her daughter and Faith knew right then as she stared at the child’s now sleeping form that she would do anything for her. She would die for her.
She snapped her head up as she heard the catch on the door click. Faith prayed it wasn’t another nurse, so much for a privet room, there was never any privacy! She tore her eyes away from her daughter’s face and flicked her head up, her eyes meeting with…

Faith: Selene!
Selene: Hello Faith

Her voice was quiet and subdued, far from the outgoing, vibrant Selene of Brighton not six months ago. She waved nervously, surveyed the scene before her and sat in the chair beside Faith’s bed.

Selene: So, you had a girl then?
Faith: Yeah how’d you know?
Selene: Cos the pink baby grow wasn’t a giveaway? Jamie called me.

Faith didn't know what to think about that

Faith: He called you?

Why hadn’t he told her?

Selene: Yeah guess he thought I’d like to know

Faith averted her eyes. Selene smiled gently at her.

Selene: It’s ok Faith
Faith: No I should have called, after everything you did for me…

She trailed off

Selene: Its ok Faith really. You have more important things to think about now.

She grinned, flashing her pearly whites as only Selene could.

Selene: When Jamie called he said you’d had a girl and that she was as cute as anything but I never guessed she’d be a gorgeous as her mother.

Faith laughed at that then blushed slightly at the sound of the compliment she had not heard in so long, especially coming from someone as high up on the beauty scale as Selene.

Faith: Not at the minute. I haven’t slept properly in two days, I don't even remember the last time I brushed my hair and this hospital gown is about as unflattering as it gets.

Faith raked her had through her unruly curls to emphasise the point. Selene shook her head.

Selene: You look fine, all glowing with motherly pride I suppose
Faith: Thanks…I think

They both giggled

Selene: So what d’you call her?

Faith shifted the baby in her arms and squirmed slightly under Selene’s gaze.

Faith: Err well Jamie said I could decide and erm…well…I want to call her Charlotte.

Selene paled and Faith rushed on.

Faith: I know it seems odd, morbid even but it feels right. I know how strange it must seem but it’s weird, I never even met Lot and yet I feel like I owe her something. I talked with her friend, slept in her room, her bed, with her boyfriend. Hey for the first night I even wore her clothes but I didn't meet her end. I suppose in some ways I took her chance and it’s as if through me Lot gets a second chance somehow.

Faith laughed nervously.

Faith: That doesn't make any sense, I know.

Selene merely looked at her, a sad smile on her face.

Selene: It makes perfect sense. Can I… Can I hold her?

Selene held out her arms expectantly and Faith, somewhat regrettably, handed her baby to the older girl. Selene’s long hair swished about baby Charlotte like a great curtain as Selene settled back and studied the child in her arms.

Selene: You know she looks a bit like Lot.

For some reason this pleased Faith.

Selene: She looks most like Jamie though.

Faith smiled. Trust Selene to tell the truth.

Selene: Don't get me wrong, there’s definitely a sparkle of Faith in there. I think it’s the eyes.
Faith: Its not me you can see in there it my dad and my sister. Their eyes were a lot like hers, I was always the odd one out.

Selene smiled.

Selene: Well like I said there’s a lot of Jamie in her.

A baby that looked like Lot and Jamie. Faith sighed and wondered for the millionth time if this was the way things were supposed to be or if the fates were merely playing a cruel game and monopolising her life. Her mind kept going back to something Jamie had once said ‘I though Lot was forever’. Maybe that’s why he hadn’t objected to Faith’s choice of name, because this way he got to keep a little bit of Lot forever. Faith looked up at Selene the back to her hands where they rested in her lap.

Faith: I don't know if I love Jamie.

Selene’s head snapped upwards. There, she’d said it. She hadn’t even fully admitted it to herself and yet here she was trusting Selene with her most guarded secret.

Selene: What do you mean you ‘don't know if you love him’?
Faith: I’m trying, I just

She stopped and squeezed her eyes shut as once more they burned with heavy tears. Selene placed Charlotte in the crib and pulled Faith into a hug.

Selene: Shhh honey, it’ll be ok, it takes time, after what you’ve been through…

There was that phrase again. What exactly was it she’d been through. Something had happened to her, she’d taken part in events, it wasn’t just something that washed over her like a tunnel with clarity her goal at the other end.

Faith: Its been five months Selene
Selene: You just have to be patient, it’ll be ok, he cares about you.
Faith: I’m just not sure if that’s enough.

Selene smiled and stood up.

Selene: When is love ever enough?

She quirked her head in a very Selene-like manor and headed to the door.

Faith: Selene! Wait!

She whipped her beautiful head round.

Faith: Do you have a middle name?
Selene: Well its not something I publicise but sure, yeah, its Elizabeth, why?
Faith: Never mind.

Selene grinned and smiled a goodbye before walking away through the door and leaving the room once more in silence.

2 days later Charlotte Elizabeth Scott went home.

Part 59

Faith took a deep breath and shifted the baby in her arms as she stepped out of the car. She stood looking up at her home not knowing why she didnt want to go in. She was overcome with nerves and as she looked at a long row of cars that had collected on the other side of the street she suddenly knew why. Inside were a group of her so called nearest and dearest ready to pounce on her in a party style manor the moment she stepped through the door.
Sharon noticed the look on Faiths face and moved to stand beside her in front of the house.

Sharon: It was just an idea

That confirmed it. Surprise party here we come.

Faith: Its ok mum I just wasnt expecting it, come on lets go in before Charlotte catches something.

Sharon and Faith moved to enter the house but Jamie had moved from the back of the car swiftly to Faiths other side and was now holding his arms out expectantly.

Jamie: Come on Faith let me take her off you. You deserve a rest.

Faith clutched the baby closer, cautious not to wake her

Faith: No its ok I can manage.

She walked confidently up to the front door leaving Sharon and Jamie to follow and manouvered Charlotte to the crook of her arm so that she could open the door. When she did all hell broke loose.
Party poppers banged, steamers tumbled down and joyous cries of 'surprise!' and 'welcome home!' were heard. Charlotte woke immediatly but didnt cry. The baby mearly blinked her big eyes and looked up at her mother. Faith moved further into the room and was pulled into warm hugs by family members and close friends. Aunt Vicki, her husband Tom and daughter Sunni had made the trip from America specially. Erin was there with Pete and their kids Sam and Ellie. Pauline had come round, dragging with her Joe, Martin and a heavily pregnant Sonia. Ian was there with Jane and their two year old Oliver and Phil and Stella had brough Ben and baby Laura. Faith had no idea she even knew this many people, let alone that they cared.
Faith did the obligatory circuit around her guests, basking in the ooohs and aaahs they directed towards her and her daughter, then slipped upstairs and put Charlotte down gently in the newlt erected cot that had been placed in hers and jamies room. A single thought flicked through her mind as she stared down at the sleeping child. Life is good.
Faith practically skipped downstairs, loving the feeling of joy that had welled up inside her. She sat back in the living room with the people she loved and for the first time in months felt like she truly belonged. She laughed and giggled and made stupid jokes. She picked at junk food and poked fun at Alyss. She played with the twins and danced to music and enjoyed herself in almost every way a 16 year old teenage mum with a dark past, a deseaced father and a devilish bad luck could.

Alyss: So then I said: 'Thats not a hat, its my lunch'

The whole room erupted in fits of giggles at the completion of Alyss's story and Sharon struggled to compose herself long enough to even hear the knock at the door, let alone answer it. She closed the living room door on her way out, shutting away the noise so she could talk to whoever it was at the front door. A small small still lingered on her lips as she opened the door and came face to face with two severe looking police officers.

Policeman: Mrs Rickman I presume? We need to talk to your daughter Faith regarding a Mr David Scott.
Sharon: Why have you found him? Where is he? If I get my hands on him...
Policewoman: Please Mrs Rickman we need to see Faith

Sharon looked at the younger woman and nodded.

Sharon: You'd better come in.

No sooner had they stepped in the hall than the living room door opened and Faith walked out, a bright smile dancing on her lips, golden curls swaying atop her head.

Faith: Mum we need more cups, Alyss said there might be some...

She looked up properly and spotted the police. The colour immediatly drained from her face. She turned to Sharon.

Faith: What are they doing here?
Sharon: They need to talk to you. Its about David.

Faith looked up to the officers and back towards the living room and hung her head with a sigh. The party was most definitely over.

Ok here it is, the last part. I'm not entirely happy with it but here it is anyway. Thanks to everyone who replied and I'll be bach near xmas with a short Faith script.

Part 60

The clock on her bedside table read 3am but it felt like much later. Faith sat up slowly in bed, careful not to wake Jamie, and let her mind skim over the events of the previous night. Even several hours after the police had left her she was still coming to terms with their visit, still replacing the mask of calmness that they had shattered. All they’d done was ask a few questions but she’d been reduced to a nervous wreck and as a result had been unable to sleep, instead tossing and turning, blanketed in a cold sweat and shaking with a feeling she couldn’t describe. It wasn’t what they had asked her that had her so worked up, it was what they told her. David was dead and they’d found his body.
Faith didn't know what to think, didn't know what to feel. He was dead. The man who had been her lifeline for six months was dead. Jamie didn't seem too bothered, he was just quiet but then again he was always quiet. Faith wasn’t sure how people expected her to react, should she be sorry, should she be happy, sad, angry? She was so confused.
Faith slipped out of bed and walked over to the cream cot that rested beneath the window. Charlotte lay sleeping peacefully, a tiny sliver of moonlight drifting through the curtains and illuminating her perfect features. Faith decided then as she watched her daughter sleep that she was sick of death, sick of dying and sick of the confusion and upset it came with. She had been around the world and back. She had seen sunrises and sunsets. Beaches, streets, monuments, ruins. She had grown as a person. She had met friends, enemies, creatures and death. But most of all – she had met life. There were no longer any questions for Faith, no more confusion. She was ready to live.
Faith twitched at the curtains before climbing back into bed and waiting for sleep to claim her. When it did, she was restless, her dreams filled with David and the day at the lake house but none of that mattered anymore because Faith had made a decision. She had sat there as the police questioned her and seen the looks on Jamie and her mother’s faces and as she had heard Charlotte’s cries from upstairs she had made her choice. No one would ever know the truth about David, after all Faith was possibly the only witness to his death and after a long hard thought about what happened that day she’d realised…she didn't remember...
