should gp surgeries be run by private firms?

i don't know if it would improve services and waiting times to see your doctor. At the surgery that i am registered there is about 5 doctors in the practice butyo still have to wait about a week to get an appoitment and if i want to see my own GP there is a three week waiting list

I have an appointment on wednesday, I made it 3 weeks ago but it is non urgent. When my son was ill at Christmas time he was seen within the hour.

I guess it is all a matter of priorities..

there is no such thing as appointments at my doctors.

You just turn up when you need him you might have to wait an hour but you still get seen that morning or afternoon.

Who knows if they will need a doctor in three weeks time?

would it improve things if they were?? at my doctors you have to phone in the morning for a urgent importamnt but if you dont phone dead on 8am the phones are engaged and then all the appointments are gone! so many times they have refused to see connor and even wont when i argue with them so then i end up at the out of hours doctors! and if connor is suddenly ill at luchtime likelast week i have to wait till the morning by then it too late! When it not a urgent appointment im told to book and they give me an appontment for 2 weeks time but that time i dont need it anymore! my docs is a nightmare!!

we used to have that at our doctors you went in the morning and you would just wait but people complained that thye were waiting hours, so they changed it now you have to wait even longer for one! i prefered the turn up and wait

If it was privatised, they could charge what they wanted and I don't know about the UK but I have to pay €50 everytime I go to my doctor, even for a bad cold...

OMG!

Well, say what you like about the NHS. It is free at the point of service, and in an emergancy they generally come through for you big time.

yeah it is and id much rather that than pay that much just for a cold! maybe we need more surgereies to open to cope with all the people! all the doctors down here are always so busy and you have to wait ages.! saying that i just fight now for an appointment it the only way!

We desperately need something like that.. Oh you can get medical cards for free doctor fees but the means test is stupid. Even our equivalent of the NHS cost €25 per visit to doctor. As most with medical cards use the clinics, there is no room for many people so they have to go to a more private one which cost a fortune!!!!

the UK are so lucky to have the NHS. My Aunty wworks for a hospital in Ireland and she says people are put of going to the doctors due to having to pay. My doctors are really good where we are, they see you usually within the day. There really good if you ever need to phone them or need an appointment its realy quick.

i think its a bad idea- becuase when something bad happens it'll be harder to rectify it than it is with the NHS now. i have never had any problems in my area with queues and things, although there have been some in neighbouring boroughs

Nhs is a good thing but appointments are hard to get my mum had towait 2-3 weeks for an appointment and then they asked her if she wanted an emergency appointment which you can get the following day then changed there mind as said she did not classify as an emergency and the receptionist was really rude on the phone.
