Thought I would ask the question, as there is a television programme coming up on Channel 4 which shows a mum of 2 yr old twins still breast feeding, a mum of a 3 yr old breastfeeding and (IMO) disgustingly a mum of a 7yr old who is still breastfeeding (sorry but i get images of my son running around outside, coming in and saying give us a drink ma  )

What are your opinions on this??

I personally feel that up to the age of 1yr/18months is ok but anything past that, really isn't necessary, but like I say, that is my personal opinion...

I think one is the limit time, and even then only for a occasional quick feed.

i breast fed marley up until she was about a year old and that was gradully swaping a feed during the day for a bottle by the time she was 8 months old she was only breast fed in the morning and at night during the day she drank out of a cup. I think once they get teeth then that's when it's time to stop. Marley is 7 now and there is no way i could imagine breast feeding her now not the amount of grub she puts away a day

I think a year is long enough, to be honest. They are old enough to start to learn after that. This coming from a non-mum point of view :p:D

i reckon about one,

i have no probs with breast feeding i did not do it myself and i am fine with women who feed in public,

but i really don't think its right for a child of 7 to be breast fed its just not right

i just don't get it! why would you still want to do it when your child was that age?????

i know it helps with bonding when they are really small......................but a 7 year old!! i really don't understand!!!!!!????????????

doubt it, kids that age can't just live on milk, and you need to eat a fair bit to produce milk!!

i found that a very interseting programme, it goes to show it is very personal when you want to stop, but i still think 7 is too old

but it still does not bother me when someone does it in public, we all have to eat!!!

I would say one too. By that time they can drink from bottles anyway.

My son is 14 months, and I still breastfeed him. I get ALOT of negative comments, but being the headstrong person that I am, I can brush them off thankfully. The World Health Organisation recommends that children should be breastfed for at least 2 years, along with a healthy diet, to get the maximum benefit. Most children self wean off breastfeeding by the time they are 4, and I think the woman breastfeeding her 7 year old is part of an extremely small minority. Mind you, she implied that her husband has drank milk from her breasts, and that's just WRONG!

Here in Britain, we have one of the worst track record for breastfeeding in the world, and much of that is down to inadequate information, and the attitude that breasts are there primarily for sexual enjoyement (which they are not-they are there to feed babies!) The same people who say it's wrong to breastfeed in public are the same who buy the Sun "newspaper" on a regular basis and ogle breasts on page 3. In facy, you see more bare boob on a Saturday night in your local town centre than you do from any woman breastfeeding. If you look at the world as a whole, most children are breastfed until they are 4, and that is not just countries where famine pervades, we are talking places like France and Spain too.

Anyway, that's my rant over. I actually found it quite refreshing to see that you all said that breastfeeding should end after a year. If you can do it for that long, you are doing a sterling job!!!!!!!

I'm quite passionate about this, can you tell????!!!!!!!!!
