Should school ties be banned?

Following the suicide of a 13 year old boy from my estate the kids from the local comprehensive are refusing to wear their school ties to school as this is what he used, its the 2nd death in the last year in our area where a school tie was involved. Do you think they should be banned? A few of the pupils are going to start a petition against wearing them and I wondered what you guys thought about it?

i know someone who killed himself by his school tie, he was in my little sisters year. I dont think they should be banned as you dont expect this to happen its the children who have problems the ties dont make them. If they didnt use there tie it would probably been something else.

Kids should be grown up enough to wear a tie. I think at primary schools its different as there younger but i think that the elastic ones are a really good idea. thats what the brought in at my primary school. Its safer, smarter, and easy for the kids to use.

i think they should as they can be used dangerously and especially girls shouldnt have to wear them as when in girls lives do we ever wear a tie apart from school days .... we dont .

dont think kids need to wear ties these days, they can look smart enough in shirt, school sweatshirt and blazer if necessary. even company's are dressing down these days. you dont even need a tie in the civil service!

i don't think we do- well females anyway- we never wear ties apart from at school. but some of my teachers don't even wear ties, so i don't think so. although we look smart, it could save time becuase then they can stop telling us on up in off!!!

I don’t really know- he would have found something else to kill himself with- if the school tie is part of the unforium than it HAS to be wore.

I think it should be a option that the students have to say wheather or not they want to wear it if (the tie) if it not rule

I quite liked me tie, but a girl in my school did attempt to hang herself with hers, so I don't know.

also everyone in our school tends to have their tie not very short but not like long enogh if you get what i mean so teachers are always telling us to put them longer but we never do they can cause a lot of troub;e

I think ties should be banned, they could be dangerous to people and I don't think its fair that people have to wear them at school. At my school, girls dont have to wear one but boys do, which I think is a bit sexist.

i dont think thats sexist at all because girls dont generally wear ties like when your older and you go for an interview say if you are a girl you wouldnt consider wearing a tie you would wear maybe a skirt and blouse or something but i think that boys wear them beacuse it gives them practise because when boys are older tehy wear ties in meetings etc.

Yeah, I suppose lol, but the boys still think its shocking that they have to wear them and we don't, but I'm not complaining lol.

I was thinking this is what should happen Clo, I think it's a brilliant idea because if your getting a job or your job needs you to dress formally, when men where suits with TIES.. well yeah.. and ladies don't need to wear ties so yeah!!

i dont think ties should be banned just cos someone hung themselves with one, i mean he wanted to kill himself so he would have done so whether he wore a tie to school or not. i think people are just using the tie as an excuse really

i don't think ties should be banned cause if a person is that distraught about life and wants to end it then they would fine something else. Society should be pouring resources into finding out why so many young people take their own lives. I wore a school tie from the ages of 5 until 16 as the school unifrom was compuslory. Marley wears the school uniform everyday although she wears polo shirts instead of a shirt and tie because it is more practical when she has gym

We only have to wear ours for half a year, but at our school most of the students look more untidy as they have their tie hanging half way down their shirt because they don't want to wear their ties than what they do if they wear their polo shirt, so because of that and how they can be dangeous as people can kill themselves with them, but bullies could also kill fellow students with them so i think they should be banned.

I think the reason they want them banned is because of the symbolism of it, two of their friends are now dead and they used the tie. The school say the tie gives them individuality, in other words people can tell their from that school when their wearing them but at the same time they have to wear jumpers and polo shirts with the school logo on... it makes no sense.

i think the schools in the right here. as much as i hate school uniform its there for a reason. as i said before, these kids probably just dont want to wear their ties and someone killing themselves with one is a good excuse for them. i mean, if the kid had killed themselves with say some sort of sharp knife or blade or something that they use in technology would they want the school to get rid of all those objects, i dont think it would even cross their minds

i agree di marco. The ties also make schools look smart. I know my school did. Its a terrible thing that someone died but if they had not used the tie it would have been something else.

I didnt have to waear one for more than my first year at school. we then wore polo shirts instead. They were more tidy and looked more smart than with ties as ties tend to look sctuffy when they arnt tied propery. Its up to the school but I prefered not to have them espectially in the summer. As for the idea of suicide by them, wont these people just use something else instead like a belt or a shoelace??

yes i agree they can end up looking really scruffy but i think thats up to the school as well. at my school we have to have our top button done up (or make it look like its done up) and the ties have to be a certain length

at my school they only make a fuss if you dont have a tie and they dont care about buttons at all, but we do look a bit scruffy.

i think they should be banned ad many kids joke about pulling peoples ties and if once person pulls to tight they could end up being straggled it sounds silly but it could happen.

I dont think they should be banned, everyone at my school moans about them but i dont see the big issue, its part of the uniform live with it if it wasnt ties it would just be something else they didnt want to wear anyway i think thye look smart

That happened in my best friend's old school but i hate ties i never have them right up the top because i hate it.

If ties are banned in case someone attemps suicide then where do we draw the line. Remove shoe laces, belts, straps from schoolbags ropes from the gym, balls of string etc etc.

If someone wants commit suicide then they will find a way

maybe not baned, just not a necessity. we went from dress code (any black or white t-shirt, any black or white skirt or trousers, any shoes) to annoying school uniform which i guess wouldn't be so bad but we HAVE to wear school ties and it's well annoying :mad:
