If an MP is doing his/her job correctly who cares about their private life... If however their private live interfers with the job at hand then it will matter... Would you care about any of your teachers/co-workers sexuality if they were doing a good job??? answer is no

But what if that MP was tabeling a motion to lower the age of consent for homosexuality to 14? Conflict of interest?

As long as they are doing the job they were elected to do then they should not be discriminated against their sexuality. But what angers me is that their sexuality is always exposed in a sordid or seady way. If more MP's were open about their sexuality or beliefs from the begining more people would probably vote and support them.

that is difficult to call. I think if any mp regardless of sexuality lower age of consent for straight/gay to 14 there would be outcry everywhere

I'm sure there was a proposal put forward and then they settled on the current age. I'll have to dig it up.

Politics is a fascinating subject. My personal belief is that the majority of politicians are in it for themselves. The longer you stay in the game, the more chance you have of becoming a millionaire. The only ones I truly admire are Tony Benn and Tam Dalyell.

Let's face it. We have an (alleged) socialist Goverment that is more right wing the the conservatives, a liar as a PM and a bunch of brown nosed MPs.

And what really peeves me off is hypocrites. I have an uncle who was spouting off about the Iraq invasion (I can't call it a war as the are no articles declaring it as such) , how Blair is such a liar and what happens on voting day? He comes around to my parents house and has the audacity to tell them to vote for Labour because people have become richer under them. I just saw red and let rip. We haven't talked since.

And your local elected councillor is just as bad. Ask them how many directorships that have got. Its just silly - they make more money by taking legalised backhanders than actual work.

Actually, reminds me of two funny incidents. Once I was skiving school with my mate (this is in the 80s) and ended up in the town bookshop. And who should walk in, none other than Jeffrey Archer himself. Arrogant sod, walks over shaking everyones hand etc. Comes to me and says "do you know who I am young man?" Well, I did, but says "Cecil Parkinson - the one that slept with the secretary". He laughs and says "no, no, I'm Jeffrey Archer the author and politician". Being youthful and all that, I come out with "oh yeah, the one who went with the prossie". I'll never forget the look on his face.

The other incident was when my local MP came knocking at the door. Stuck his hand out, I just looked at him. I politely told him that he had voted for the Iraq invasion and there was no way I was going to shake his hand. The lying melon farmer said he voted against it so I told him to wait, run upstairs to grab my laptop, and then went to the Guardian site to show him his voting record.

Politicians? I reckon they are the most deceitful lot around.

couldn't agree more with you NB.. Our ex PM was up on "missing money" charges and found a way to get out of them (probably gave the judge a backhander).. Over here when we know someone is corrupt what happens??? they hold a tribunial (sp?) for months, years costing taxpayers a lot for it and then nothing comes out of it..

However one mp was jailed for not answer questions

Its exactly the same here Siobhan. It used to be 'Knowledge is power". Nowadays its "Who you know is power"

Remember the fiasco in the European Parliament? When it was found out the whole lot were a bunch of corrupt politicians taking back handers?

I agree with you both that politicans are mainly in the game for self enrichment of some sort.

With regards to the original question, I do not think that someones sexuality should effect their ability to do a job, however, if they lie about it and lay themselves open to blackmail, then that is dangerous.

With the press we have politicians should know that the truth will eventually out, they should be honest from the start. Not being so shows a lack of common sense and arrogance.

But why is it so necessary for them to lie? What have the government got to hide and I am sure it is something big. Not one mp can tell the truth about anything...

Homosexuality shouldn't stop people doing a job. this just makes sure Homosexual people have someone there to represent them

I think it is an arrogance thing. They think that they are so much more intelligent than the rest of the population that they can get away with anything..

Yup. They never give a honest answer to a honest question.

In recent times the ones I recall best are:

Jeffrey 'No to Vice" Arthur
Neil "Brown Bag" Hamilton
Jonathan 'Sword of Truth' Aitken

If you have a vested interest in the corporate world, then that will certainly influence you. Government isn't about the people anymore; its about appeasing the corporate world.

This is the truth NB.. I would say the same thing applies for the USA..no wonder UK and America are facing an all time high in unemployment the rich just get richer and the poor just get poorer.

i dont think there sexuality should affect it as long as there doing there job properly, but they should come clean at the start and not lie about. Look at the lib dem party, Charles Kennedy resigned for alcoholic abuse, The other guy expected to take over was doing god knows what to ayoung boy. So i dont think if your Straight or gay it matters.
