this is my fisrt post and my first fanfiction. i've read loads though, and they all inspired me to write my own. i hope you like it, but please feel free to tell me if it's rubbish!

DS Samantha Nixon stepped outside, relieved to feel the cool air on her face, after sitting behind her desk practically all day, sorting out paperwork for what seemed like months.

Well, I have been pretty busy lately, it’s not like I’ve been slacking off!

Over the last couple of months, between Cop the Lot, persuading Chez Williams to testify in court, the drama of him being shot, trying to keep corrupt ex officers from framing her DCI and taking care of her daughter Abigail at home, she had hardly had a minute to herself.

Of course, Sam didn’t mind this, she liked to keep busy, liked to keep her focus, both at home and at work.

Sam walked down the ramp outside the station, stretching her seized up muscles and trying to get the blood circulating properly again, noticing how unusually quiet it was, considering it was the middle of the day.

Must be National Criminal Bank Holiday and nobody told us! Ok, now I know I really need to get out more, I’m stood out here alone, making lame jokes to myself.

Sam subconsciously shook her head at herself, thinking about how long it has been since she had been out on a god night with . . . well, anyone really. She loved spending time at home with Abi, but, not that she would ever admit it to anyone, but she got kind of lonely sometimes.

Sam was just about to berate herself for wallowing in self-pity, when her rather sombre thoughts were interrupted by a hand on her shoulder.

She jerked round and knocked the hand away in a single motion. When she came to a halt, she couldn’t conceal her surprise at seeing Douggie Price staring back at her and involuntary let out a little gasp.

After her momentary lapse of composure, she regained herself, took a step back, demanding

“What the hell are you doing here? You’re supposed to be rotting in jail, where you belong, after what you did to Jack!”

Douggie simply smiled, “Now, now Samantha, don’t you worry your pretty little head about such things. I’m here and that’s all that matters.”

He took a step towards her, reaching out. She tried to take one back as well, but came up against the railing. He looked up to see Douggie taking yet another step towards her, and she began to feel slightly intimidated.

Get a grip! She told herself!

She tried again, “What do you want?”

“Why Samantha, Jack tells me you’re one of the best coppers in this grotty nick, surely you can work that little mystery out for yourself!”

He smiled again, revealing all of his yellow teeth, the ones he still had left anyway.

Sam felt her stomach turn at the sight, becoming more and more nervous as the time passed,

Why is there no one around? Trust me to pick a stupid time to come out her alone, make stupid jokes about how quiet it was and then get attacked by a big creep as a result of it.

Sam was repulsed as Douggie, who had her pinned against the railing with both arms, lent in towards her, getting closer and closer to her face and her lips.

She felt tears begin to well in her eyes, as she tried with all her might to move he arms, but Douggie was apparently much stronger than he looked.

She closed her eyes, unable to look and tried to turn her face away to the side, but Douggie simply followed with his own face.

The sound of doors opening and a familiar voice shouting “Oi”, made Sam open her eyes once again.

Phil.

She didn’t think she had ever been so pleased to hear another person’s voice (except maybe the time when they heard Abi screaming for help, minutes before she ran out of oxygen in a huge shipping container).

Her happiness doubled as she watched DS Phil Hunter vault himself over the fence, like some hero in a film rescuing the damsel in distress, roughly yanked Douggie away from her and shoved him hard in to the ground.

Within minutes, Douggie Price had been re-arrested by DC Jo Masters and DC Zain Nadir, and put back into a cell, where he belonged, and was likely to stay for a very long time.

One by one, the relief returned to work, satisfied that Sam was ok and as usual, wanted no fuss.

After a few moments, only she and Phil remained.

“Well, my knight in shining armour hey?” Sam teased.

“Noticed you leave the office and when you didn’t come back, I . . .” Phil trailed off.

“What?” she asked, curiosity filling her huge brown eyes.

“I got worried ok?” Phil looked away, embarrassed, waiting for her to bail or make a snide comment.

“You did? Oh, Phil that’s so sweet!”

He noticed the sarcasm in her voice and looked back at her. He was about to point put the fact he had just saved her from a maniac when she beat him to it.

“No, seriously though Phil, thank-you. You saved me, and I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t come along when you did.”

“Doesn’t matter, you’re safe now and that’s all that mattered”.

He pulled her into a hug, not caring what she thought or said.

He silently added, I just want you safe Sam, forever! I just want to protect you because I love you!

She walked into his embrace quite willingly, holding him close to her body, not wanting to let go, but afraid of what might happen if she let Phil know how she really felt.

How much I really love him. What if he doesn’t feel the same? He’d proved more than once he felt something more for her, but she had always rejected him. She didn’t even know why she had done, she was just so afraid of getting hurt. She knew Phil had a reputation, and not necessarily a good one, but deep down in her heart, she believed Phil would never deliberately hurt her. She didn’t want to make a fool of her self though, didn’t want to spoil their friendship, if that’s what they could only ever have: better to be friends till the end, than nothing to each other. She was torn as to what to do, when the decision was taken right out of her hands.

“Sam, listen, I know I’ve asked before and I know you’ve always said no, but I’m going to ask you again anyway, got nothing to lose. Do you fancy going out for a meal tonight? My treat?”

He waited with baited breath and she pulled away from him, Oh no he thought, here comes the rejection again, why do I do this to myself? To her? I should just give up, she deserves better . . .

But what he saw in her eyes made him stop: happiness.

Sam could hardly contain her excitement, all the happiness bubbling inside of her, threatening to explode, he asked me, he actually asked me again, after all I’ve put him through!

“I’d love to Phil, on one condition? I get to chose the most expensive restaurant in town, none of that fish and chips and a walk through town thing!”

Well, she couldn’t seem too keen could she?

“Oooh, Miss Nixon, you drive a hard bargin”, Phil complained, struggling to keep a straight face. Phil made a face as if considering, but only managed to last a minute before they both burst with laughter.

I’m going on a date with Phil Hunter, my Phil, my knight in shining armour, my soul mate.

Sam had never been so happy!

She said yes, I can’t believe she said yes! I’ve got a date with the most beautiful woman in the world, the woman he loved more than anything he had ever known.

For the first time in his life, Phil felt complete.

Ok, well, here's part two, I hopeyou enjoy!

It looked like a bomb had hit the Nixon household; clothes were strewn out everywhere with Sam and Abi sat in the middle of the chaos.

Sam had been picking a suitable outfit to wear for her date for over an hour. Somehow, nothing seemed right

“What about this?” Abi asked, reaching out to pick up a rather revealing black dress.

“I think I tried that on already”, Sam replied with a sigh, looking the dress up and down with a raised eyebrow, as if it was the first time she had ever seen it. “And besides, I don’t want Phil to think I’m some sort of slapper by night”.

“Well, you can’t exactly go on your, lets face it, way overdue date in a suit and shirt now, can you?”

----------------------------------------------------------------

Phil got home from work late, some big case he had been working on had meant he was on a big operation for most of the day, and it’d all gone wrong, and some big time gangsters had got away, blah, blah, blah . . .

He shook his head to shake the negative thoughts from his mind; nothing, and he meant nothing was going to spoil tonight, he had once chance to do things right by Sam and this was it.

As he let himself in, he looked at the clock hanging on the wall: 2 hours until he had to pick Sam up at 8.

----------------------------------------------------------------

“Excuse me? Way overdue?” Sam inquired, throwing the black dress back at her daughter playfully.

“You know what I mean!”, Abi protested, as she untangled herself from the dress, “you and Phil! It’s about time you finally went out together! You’ve spent the last year pussy-footing around each other!”

“It was that obvious huh?”

“Well, I am your daughter, I suppose it’s kind of my job”.

Sam smiled at her beautiful daughter, “Well, obvious or not, there’s not even going to be a date at all if I can’t find something to wear. Maybe I should call Phil and cancel for tonight, maybe arrange for another time?”

“Don’t you dare!”, Abi instructed, rising o her feet, “I’ll find you something to wear if it’ the last thing I do!” She took a step towards her mother’s walk-in wardrobe in which the few remaining clothes, which hadn’t been tried on, hung up. “There has to be something you can wear! Ooooh, what’s this?” she asked, reaching behind a suit to reveal a beautifully elegant lilac dress. With it’s off the shoulder straps, fitted body and long, flowing skirt, it was the perfect evening dress. “Wow, it’s perfect”, Abi told her mum, handing it over to her.

“I forgot I even bought this, I wore it to a works Christmas party a couple of years ago, I doubt it’ll even fit me anymore!”

Nevertheless, she took the dress off Abi and headed for the bathroom.

----------------------------------------------------------------

An hour later, Phil emerged from the bath, and dressed in black trousers and a silky maroon shirt, only buttoned half way up.

Not much different from the office, he thought to himself, but I can’t exactly go on ‘the’ date in jeans and a t-shirt can I?

----------------------------------------------------------------

She returned minutes later looking, in Abi’s opinion, like she has just stepped off the red carpet at a movie premiere.

“Wow, mum, you look a million dollars, Phil won’t be able to take his eyes off you! Now, what about your hair? I can curl it?”

“I don’t know . . . how long will it take, Oh my God, what time is it?” In all the confusion of her clothes, she had totally forgotten to keep her eye on the time; she didn’t want to be late!

“Don’t worry, you’ve got ages, Phil won’t be here for another hour at least. We’ve got plenty of time!”

Sam breathed a sigh of relief, “Ok, that’s good! Now then what about these curls?”

----------------------------------------------------------------

Splashing on a bit of his favourite aftershave, Phil picked up his wallet and car keys and headed out the door, noticing he was still a little early.

Never mind, better to make a good impression!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Abi was just adding the finishing touches to her mother’s mass of curls, when the doorbell announced that Phil was outside.

Sam looked at her watch, “Oh my God, he’s early. Phil Hunter, Mr Unreliable is actually early!”

“Shows he’s keen at least!”, Abi said with a smirk.

Sam threw her a look.

“Right, I’ll go and let him in, we can’t leave the poor guy stood outside on his own all night long can we? You come down when you’re ready, I’ll keep him talking”.

Sam stood in front of her full-length mirror, as Abi left to get the door.

I hope he likes it, she thought to herself.

She moved over to her nightstand, spraying some of her favourite perfume on, grabbed her handbag and left her room, closing the door behind her.

Here goes nothing . . .

After ringing the doorbell, Phil stood on Sam’s doorstep, waiting for the woman he loved. He actually felt quite nervous. Phil Hunter never got nervous going out on a date.

But his isn’t any old date, he reminded himself. This was different; he had never known a woman quite like Samantha Nixon, and he doubted he ever would in the future.

Hs wandering mind was interrupted by the door being opened by Abi who welcomed him in, closing the front door behind him.

“Mum’ll be down in a minute”, she told him.

“That’s alright”, Phil replied, “I think I’m a little early anyway”.

“Take a seat if you want”, Abi said, gesturing toward living room.

“No need thanks Abi”, came Sam’s voice from the top of the stairs, “I’m ready to go now”.

Phil looked up and what he saw took his breath away. “Sam, you look amazing!” He couldn’t believe the transformation from DS Sam Nixon into just Sam, two sides of a woman who was truly stunning in his eyes, and he wanted to get to know them both, more than he had wanted anything in his life.

“You don’t scrub up too bad your self Mr Hunter!” she complimented him.

“Shall we?” Phil asked, extending his arm to her to link.

Sam complied, taking his arm, and turned to Abi “Don’t wait up”, she told her.

“I won’t”, she promised, “Now you two kids behave”, she yelled up the driveway, as Phil led he mum up the driveway of their house towards his car.

here's the third bit, i hope its ok!

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Sam protested, “You’ve had a crush on me since Weaver tried to kill us both, down in that tunnel? That was nearly 3 years ago Phil!”

“Are you trying to tell me that you’ve never thought of me at all over the last 3 years?” Phil demanded.

“Of course I have Phil”, she replied with a smile, “I’m always thinking what a jerk you can be sometimes.”

“Only sometimes?” he questioned, raising one eyebrow, “That’s progress I suppose”.

They were sat in the most expensive restaurant in town; Phil had reserved the best seats in the house, a cosy little table for two, located right next to the huge bay window, which overlooked onto the street.
As Phil sat there, watching Sam, he noticed how the lit candles in the middle of the table cast a warm glow across her face, making her look more beautiful than ever.

Sam was well aware that Phil was watching her, the attention making her feel more special. She looked into his huge brown eyes, and seeing the admiration there, couldn’t help but smile back at him.

“Speaking of progress, don’t you think we should order some food? We’ve been sat here for nearly an hour and that waiter over there keeps giving us dirty looks”, Sam said, indicating towards the bar area, with a little nod of her head, where a male waiter stood trying unsuccessfully to be subtle in his staring.

“How ‘bout we give him something to really stare at?” Phil suggested with a slight gleam in his eye.

“What did you have in mind?” Sam asked, intrigued.

“Work with me”, he replied, taking her hand across the table.

He leaned forwards towards her, until his lips met hers. The contact was electric, and he could feel his excitement rising up inside of him.

Sam felt the butterflies in her stomach do a little jump as Phil took her hand and leant in towards her. She leant forward a little herself in order to meet him halfway across the table.

The kiss was soft and gentle at first, each one just happy to enjoy the moment that had been such a long time coming. Within seconds, it had deepened, becoming much more intense, as they both explored each others mouths with their tongues, the on looking waiter completely forgotten; they were completely absorbed by one another.

After several moments, they broke apart, each gasping for breath.

Wow, Sam thought to herself, have I really been missing out on that for this long?

She’s amazing, Phil told himself for the millionth time, placing a hand on her cheek, before lowering himself back onto his chair properly.

“Well”, Sam began, unable to keep herself from blushing, “I think I’ll have the Chicken Salad.”

Over an hour later, they had ordered and finished their starters and main courses and move onto deserts. They had decided to only order one desert and share, as the previous 2 huge courses had left them both feeling rather stuffed.

Sam took a spoonful of the Chocolate Pudding, offering it to Phil, who licked it off the spoon with a grin.

Phil took the spoon, and did the same, but as Sam moved forward to take the cake off the spoon, Phil pulled his arm back, playfully taking it out of the reach of her mouth.

“That’s not fair”, she complained, picking up an unused tablespoon off the table, taking the biggest spoonful of cake she could fit onto the spoon and popping it into her mouth.

“Greedy much?” Phil teased, pulling the plate towards him and finishing the cake off in two huge mouthfuls, before Sam had a chance to even think about stealing it back.

“Oh well”, Sam said, mocking disappointment, “you probably saved me a couple of pounds there. I feel like I’ve gained about 3 stone as it is!”

“Sam, you could never be anything but beautiful, not even if you tried”, Phil told her.

“Flattery will get you nowhere Phillip Hunter”, she informed him, although she was secretly delighted at the compliment.

“How about a movie or something?” Phil asked suddenly.

Sam looked down at her watch, “Phil, it’s nearly mid-night, what films are gonna be starting at this time?”

“Wow, it’s that late! I guess really does fly when you’re having fun.”

“Another time?” Sam suggested, not wanting Phil to think she wasn’t interested, because she most definitely was.

“Really?” Phil was ecstatic; she wants to go out with me again!

“Really”, Sam told him with a smile.

“Come on then”, Phil said reluctantly, “I’ll take you home.”

Phil paid the bill and they left the restaurant hand in hand.

Half an hour later, they stood outside Sams front door.

“I had a great time tonight Phil. Thank-you.”

“I’m really glad you did Sam. I did too.”

There was a silence, as neither of them really wanted the night to end, but knew it has too. Sam was the one who plucked up the courage first.

“Well, I guess I’ll see you at work tomorrow. Sorry, I mean today”, she amended, remembering how late it was.

“Guess you will”, Phil replied, unable to resist giving her a goodnight kiss. Sam was only too happy to comply.

The wasn’t as long or as intense as the first had been, but it was enough to make them both smile, as Sam let herself in and Phil made his way to his car.

Sam closed the front door behind her, leaning against the back of it for support. She felt like a teenager again, all warm inside and weak at the knees.

Phil got back into his car and for a moment, it was all he could do to just sit there. He had finally managed to get the woman of his dreams; he felt a connection between him and Sam and knew hat she felt it too. Phil drove home, a childish grin on his face the entire way.

sorry i havnt updated for a while, ive been really busy at college

ok, well this bits not very good, but i needed a middle bit for the story to fit

Sam was usually the first one in the office in a morning, so she wasn’t surprised when she walked into an empty CID office.

She had seen Gina Gold on her way in, and they had exchanged a few pleasantries, before Sam got herself a coffee from the machine and made her way up the stairs.

As she headed over towards her desk, she noticed a box there. Setting her coffee on the table, she lifted off the lid, to reveal a dozen red roses, tied together with a piece of red ribbon. She picked up the card, which lay on top, and read: -

Morning Sam,
Just wanted to say thank-you properly for last night. It was amazing!

Love Phil
Xxx

Her heart jumped at the word love. Does he really love me? She wondered. He had proved many times before that he felt something more than just friendship for her, but love? Sam couldn’t dare to hope.

She found a vase in the bottom of one of her drawers somewhere, filled in with water and placed it on the corner of her desk.

Suppose I better get on with some work, she told herself, noticing the huge pile of paperwork on her desk, which she didn’t have a chance to get through yesterday.

Less than ten minutes later, DC Jo Masters pushed her way through the double doors of the office. “Morning Sarge.”

“Morning Jo.”

Despite what had happened earlier in the year, with her and Jo getting off on the wrong foot, Sam quite liked the gutsy DC now. She reminded Sam much of herself, full of ambition, drive and determination. She was woman who knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to do whatever it took to get it. Sam doubted she would remain a DC for much longer. She firmly believed that Jo Masters was capable of so much more.

“I’ll take a wild guess here, and say those roses are the reason you’re happy.” Jo interrupted her thoughts.

“Sorry?” Sam questioned, genuinely confused, how could she know?
“Come on Sam”, she replied, “You’re sat in the office at 8 in the morning, surrounded by a mountain of paperwork, and you can’t stop smiling. Mind if I ask who they’re from?”

Sam considered lying; knowing the truth would only induce more questions and lectures. Her and Phil’s past was pretty much common knowledge. However, she quickly dismissed the idea, she was pretty much on cloud nine the morning after their date last night and wanted to shout about it from the rooftops.

“Actually, they’re from Phil”, she told, waiting for the disapproving look to come.

But it never came.

“They are? Really? Well, it’s about time!”

Sam noticed that Jo seemed almost . . . excited? Now she was really confused, “It is?” she asked.

“You two have been pussy footing around each other for months. Everyone else could see you’d be great together except you. If it went on for much longer we’d arranged to have you both locked in an interview room till you finally admitted your feelings”.

“Really?” Sam asked, still too shocked to notice that Jo was winding her up. She looked up to see a great big grin spread across Jo’s face, and suddenly realising she’d fallen for her friends teasing, she burst out laughing.

After a moment, Sam composed herself once again to as “Was it really that obvious? I didn’t even realise myself until recently”.

“No Sam”, Jo countered, “You just didn’t want to admit to it”.

She’s right, Sam thought, Last night, I wound Phil up about it, but I think I may have loved him since we were down in that tunnel

“I think I was just scared of getting hurt”.

“Well, from what I’ve seen, the last thing Phil would do is hurt you”.

“Thanks Jo, you’re a god friend”.

“No probs”, she replied with a wink.

“So . . . “, Jo started, with a mischievious grin all over her face, as she made her way over to her own desk “Do I get all the juicy details?”

“It’s only been one date, there’s not much to tell” Sam told her, playing down the happiness she had felt the night before, sitting there in that restaurant with Phil, just relaxing with the most wonderful man in the world.

Jo was just about to probe further, when they were interrupted by DS Ramini DeCosta and DC Terry Perkins pushing their way through the double doors. They were an item now, and while it had only been a couple of weeks, it was plain for everyone to see how devoted they were to one another.

I wonder if we could be like that Sam wondered, the thought making her get that warm and fuzzy feeling inside again.

After exchanging a few “Mornings”, and “How are you’s?” everyone returned to their desks, Jo indicting to Sam that they would continue this later on.

One by one, officers arrived: Zain Nadir, Suzie Sim, Mickey Webb. Phil wasn’t in until later on.

About midday, DCI Jack Meadows entered the office asking “Sam? Zain? You working on anything important?” When both shook their heads, he continued on “Well, I’ve got an Drugs Bust OBBO going down on the Cole Lane Estate. We’ve got enough uniform, but I wanted a couple of CID officers involved.”

“Sure Gov, anything’s better than this paperwork,” Zain told hid Gov, indicating to the sheets he had been working on.

Sam had finished her paperwork about half an hour ago, and was glad of the opportunity to get involved in something, after sitting behind her desk all morning.

“Great”, Jack said, “Meet you out front in 10 minutes.”

Sam and Zain cleared up their desks as much as possible grabbed their jackets and made their way downstairs.

Just as they were leaving, Phil was getting out of his car. Zain walked past with a nod in way of greeting, while Sam had something more adventurous in mind.

She caught Phil’s eye, and walking towards him, she leaned up on her tiptoes and kissed hi full on the lips, in full view of all the uniformed officers, Jack and Zain, waiting in the police van. It was nowhere a light peck on the cheek, and pulling way, Sam said “Good Morning” and made her way towards the van. Phil watched her all the way, unable to keep the smile off of his face.

An hour later, back in the office . . .

Ring, Ring . . . Ring, Ring . . . Ring

“Hello? DI Manson here”, Neil answered his phone.

“Neil? It’s Jack, there’s been a terrible accident. You’d better get down here.”

sorry it's taken me so long to update; here's the next bit

“Ramani, you’re in charge till I get back!” Neil announced as he left his office and made his way over the doors, leading to the stairs. “There’s been some sort of accident on the Cole Lane Estate OBBO, I’ll be as back as soon as I can”.

Phil had been talking to Zain, but his ears had pricked up at the mention of the Cole Lane Estate: where his beloved Sam was.

If she’s hurt . . . he began, but quickly shook the horrible thought away, he couldn’t even imagine it.

“An accident?” he asked, “what kind of accident? Is everyone ok?”

“From what the DCI said, there was some sort of car chase and DS Nixon’s in the hospital.”

Phil felt his heart almost stop at the thought of his beautiful Sam lying in a hospital bed.

“Sam . . .”

“Just keep going with whatever you’re working on and I’ll try and keep you updated on Samantha’s condition.”

Neil hadn’t seen their little display of affection earlier and had no idea how much this was breaking Phil’s heart.

Phil stood up, making his way towards Neil, “I’m coming with you.”

“No, it doesn’t need two of us there Phil, I’m taking some uniform with me to take statements and what have you. You won’t fit in the car. I can handle it.”

“I’m going with you.” Phil repeated, reaching for his coat.

“Look Phil, I know you and Sam are friends but . . .”

“It’s ok Guv”, Jo interrupted, who had been watching the whole encounter from her desk, watching Phil get more and more wound up, “I’ll take Phil. We’ll meet you up there”.

Half an hour later, Jo and Phil pulled up outside the hospital, Phil practically ran to the front desk with Jo struggling to keep up in her heels. On noticing Jack Meadows, rushed over to him.

“Guv, what happened?”

“Phil, when we raided the drugs place, one of ‘em got away. We told her not to, but you now how stubborn she can be. Sam chased him downstairs and out onto the car park. He jumped in a waiting car and she followed in her own car. She collided with another vehicle just down the road. I suppose without sirens the oncoming traffic didn’t realise she was a police officer, didn’t hear her coming. The other driver escaped with minor cuts and bruises, but Sam wasn’t wearing her seat belt Phil. She must’ve forgot about in the heat of the chase.”

“But she’s going to be ok though?” Phil asked, his eyes begging Jack to give him good news.

Jack couldn’t lie to him: he just looked down at his feet.

“Guv?” Phil asked, his voice becoming more and more frantic.

Jack took a deep breath. “She’s in a bad way Phil. She’s sustained minor head injuries, but the force of the impact crushed her against the wheel. She’s got several broken ribs and possible internal bleeding.”

“Oh my God” Phil whispered, unable to believe what he was hearing, tears welling up in his eyes.

“I want to see her,”

“She’s gone for an X-Ray to determine if she has any internal bleeds or not. She should be back soon though.”

“It’s alright Phil, why don’t we go for a coffee while we wait for her top get back.”

“How is it gonna be alright Jo? How can it possibly be ok? Sam’s lying in there with broken bones and god knows what else” Phil’s voice broke. “Sam’s seriously hurt and you wanna go get a coffee. We’ll go ahead, we all know you two are exactly the best of friends anyway.” He almost spat the last words at Jo, before turning on his heel and rushing out of the main doors.

Jo just stood there speechless for several moments, unable to process what had just happened.

“Don’t take what he says to heart Jo. He’s just upset.” Jack made an attempt to comfort her. “I think he and Sam are closer than they like people to believe.”

“More than you know Guv, more than you know.”

Jack was about to ask Jo to elaborate on that last comment, when a nurse interrupted them. “Miss Nixon is back now Sir. I’m afraid she hasn’t regained consciousness yet, but she’s in Bay 3 if you want to sit with her. It’s just down the hall”, she told them, indicating down the hall. “A doctor will come and find you when the results come back.”

“Thanks”, Jack said. He looked over at Jo. “I’ll go and find Phil and meet you there.”

“Guv.”

Phil stormed out of the hospital, feeling more angry than he could remember in a long time: angry at whoever had put Sam in the hospital in a coma: angry with himself for shouting at Jo when all she’d been trying to do was help him, but most of all, he was angry with himself for not being to protect Sam when she had needed him.

For several moments, Phil was lost in his guilt. Then, he heard comeone calling his name, and he turned to see Jack walking towards him.

“I was really horrible to Jo wasn’t I? I didn’t mean it, I’m just worried about Sam.”

“I know”, Jack replied. “She’s back from X-Ray Phil. Jo’s with her now. She’s still unconscious, but I think she’d want you with her.”

“I don’t know if I can”, Phil began. He could feel tears building up behind his eyes.

Jack was rather surprised. He knew Phil must have a more sensitive, human side to him, but he would never of guessed he’d actually witness Phil hunter cry. He realised in that moment how much Phil truly cared for Sam. “What is it Phil?”

“What is she . . .?” he bean again, but he couldn’t continue. “Never mind, come on then.”

He wiped away the un-fallen tears, as he and Jack made their way back into the hospital.

As Phil pulled back the curtain to Sam’s cubicle, he couldn’t help but let out a little gasp of despair. Sam was always so bright and full of life. Now as she lay here, silent, the only sign of life was the slight rise and fall of her chest.

Jo had been sat beside her bed on a chair, but now she stood up.

“Jo, listen, I was out of order before. I didn’t mean what I said before;

I don’t even know why I said it. I know Sam thinks a lot of you.”

“Don’t worry about it Phil, really. It’s forgotten. I’ll leave you to it. If you need anything, just let me know ok? I’m not going anywhere.”

“Thanks Jo.”

With that, she left the room to find Jack, and Phil walked over and sat on the chair that Jo had vacated, taking Sam’s hand in his own.

All the sadness and anger of the last couple of hours came flooding together in a few seconds, overflowing and he just sat there, holding Sam’s hand tight, as he sobbed silently to himself, for what seemed like hours.

Suddenly, he felt a presence behind him, and he looked round to see Jo standing there, arms crossed, a sad smile on her face.

“You really love her don’t you?”

He looked up at her again and she could see the sadness in his eyes.

“What if I never get to tell her? What if . . .?” He finally voiced the thought he hadn’t been willing to even consider earlier on “What if she doesn’t make it?” He felt the tears come again.

Jo moved forward, into the room, put a hand on Phil’s shoulder as a comfort gesture and said, “That’s what I came to tell you Phil. Her results are back. There’s no internal bleeding, just a couple of broken ribs. Doctor says give her a couple of days and she’ll be up and raring to go again.

“She’s gonna be ok?”

“She’s gonna be fine!”

Phil was so relieved; he grabbed Jo into a big hug, “She’s gonna be ok!”

chapter 6

“Phil, you need to go home and get some sleep.” Zain told him for the millionth time that hour. “Sam’ll never forgive you if you look bad when she wakes up.”

“No, I can’t. I need to be here when she does wake up.”

“Phil, you need to look after yourself.”

“I’m fine, really.”

Phil had hardly moved from Sam’s bedside in the last 48 hours, making exceptions only to visit the bathroom and to stock up on caffeine.

Zain was about to protest further, when he saw the look of determination in Phil’s eyes, which told him there was no way of changing his mind. He gave in, “You want a sandwich or something?”

Phil nodded, “Thanks.”

Zain was halfway out of the room when he heard Phil practically jump to his feet and say, “Sam? Sam? Come on Sam.” He looked up at Zain, “She squeezed my hand.”

“I’ll go and find a nurse”, he told Phil, before leaving the room.

Phil tried again, “Come on Sam, wake up, I’m here.”

Sam’s eyelids began to flutter, as her head moved slightly towards Phil’s side of the bed. She tried to say something, but all she seemed to manage was a muffled groan.

“It’s alright Sam, I’m here”, Phil tried to coax her, running his hand down the side of her face.

Zain returned from his mission, a nurse in tow. She checked the monitor, to which Sam was hooked up to, to make sure everything was as it should be, before turning to Sam. “It’s ok, Miss Nixon, you’re in the hospital. You had a little car crash, no need to worry though, you’re going to be fine.”

Sam made another little moan.

“Don’t try to talk yet Miss Nixon,” she told Sam. Taking a jug of water from the cabinet next to Sam’s bed, she filled a plastic cup, and lifting Sam’s head ever so slightly, offered it to her. “Here, take a few sips of this, it’ll help with the sore throat.”
“Is she ok?” Phil hated to see Sam obviously in a lot of pain, knowing there was no way he could ease it for her.

“She’ll be fine, Mr Hunter. She’s just a little weak. I’ve already paged Doctor Tyler and he should be with us any minute.”

As if on cue, in walked the doctor. Half an hour later, after the doctor was satisfied that Sam was both comfortable and recovering properly, he motioned for the nurse to leave with him, telling Sam, “You should try and get some rest.”

Knowing that Sam was awake and well on the road to recovery, Phil couldn’t resist a little tease. “More rest? She’s been asleep for 3 days Doc, now it’s just called skiving off.”

He watched Sam’s face turn up into a smile. Just a couple of days ago, he feared he may never see that sight again.

Then he looked up and noticed the big black bags under Phil’s eyes. “You too, Mr Hunter. You look worse than Miss Nixon.”

“Oi, thanks very much Doc, whatever happened to bedside manner?”

Is it wasn’t for the searing pain in her stomach, Sam would have laughed out loud at the ego-trodden look on Phil’s face. She lifted her hand to touch his arm and just about managed to croak out “Go” to him.

“No way, I’m fine, bloody doctors, think they know everything.”

Then Sam gave him her trademark look, which asked him why he even bothering to waste his breath trying to argue with her.

“You’re sure you’ll be ok?” he asked her. A t her nod, he replied, “Ok then, I’ll be back later ok?”

As he got up, he kissed Sam on the cheek and he and Zain left; him to go home and Zain to head back to the station.

Once Zain had informed everyone that Sam was going to make a full recovery, normal work seemed to be resumed, whereas everyone had been a little subdued over the last couple of days.

After her shift, Jo made her way over to the hospital and parked her car.
“Hey” she said, as she found Sam sitting up in bed, reading some sort of romantic novel. “Bit of light reading?”

“Look it’d make a chance from rape and drugs and murder.”

“But that’s what you d best Sarge.”

“Ah, that’s probably why I haven’t managed to get past page 6 in the last hour and a half I’ve been trying to read it.”

Both girls smiled at one another.

“How’s Phil?” Jo asked.

Sam placed the book down on her bedside dresser. “I sent him home a couple of hours ago, he looked pretty awful.”

“Now that’s not fair” Jo berated playfully, “You’ve been sleeping like a baby for the last 3 days.”

“Well, I do apologise”, Sam mocked seriousness.

Jo became more serious, “You know he never left your side. We haven’t seen him at the station since your accident. They were thinking of doing up the next cubicle along for him to become a permanent resident here.”

Sam smiled. “He did?”

“He did.”

He stayed with me all this time. He looked after me. I love him so much.

“Jo, when I was in my car right after the accident, before I lost consciousness, I was in so much pain. I was slumped over the wheel and it hurt so much in my chest, and all I could think was ‘what if I never get to see Phil again? What if I never get to tell him how I really feel? What if I never get to tell him I love him?”

Jo shook her head.

“What?” Sam asked, feeling a little stupid at her outburst, thinking Jo was maybe laughing at her, thinking she was pathetic or something.

“You two”, Jo began, “You’re both as bad as each other. Would it kill you to actually talk to one another? Would it kill you to just admit your feelings?”

She's right, Sam realised, I need to tell him.

chapter 7

A few days later, Sam was fit enough to be discharged. Between Phil and Abi, everything had been taken care off. Phil was going to go and pick Sam up from the hospital. He had been practically living there anyway, as he hadn’t wanted to leave her on her own for longer than necessary and what with Abi having Dylan to look after, they had started to bring him breakfast in the morning. Despite all the time they had been spending together in the hospital, both had conveniently managed to avoid the one subject that they were both desperate to talk about: each other.

Abi was at home, tidying up and just generally making sure things looked nice for when her mum came home.

When they arrived at Sam’s house, Phil helped her out of the car, despite her typical Sam-like protests, telling him she was quite capable of getting out of a car perfectly well on her own.

Once she was inside, Abi got Sam settled on the sofa, informing her that she had to rest for at least a couple of days.

“But what about work?”

“No-ones expecting you to come straight back to work Sam”, Phil jumped in.

“There’s no way you’re going back to work already mum!” Abi exclaimed. “Don’t even think about it.”

“Nice to know the stubborn streak is a common Nixon trait”, Phil remarked.

“Well, as much as I hate to love you and leave you, I arranged to take Dylan clothes shopping with Rose. He seems to have suddenly just grown out of all his clothes over the last couple of weeks. That’s if you’re sure that you’ll be ok mum?”

“I’m sure I’ll manage somehow. There’s really no need to fuss as much.”

“Yeah, well, it’s my job to fuss around my mum isn’t it? Anyway, Phil’ll be here, so it’s not like you’ll be on your own.”

“Abi, Phil might want to get back to work. He’s probably sick of the sight of me.”

Phil looked into her eyes, “Never”, was all he said, but it sent a little shiver up her spine.

“I’ll stay for as long as you need you me to Sam, but if you get sick of me, I’ll go.”

“No, Phil, that’s not what I meant. I just don’t want you to feel obliged to be here, that’s all.”

“I don’t, I want to be here Sam.”

“Abi made a move to leave, “Ok, that’s settled then. See you both later.” Abi kissed her Sam on the cheek, picked up her purse off the table and left pushing Dylan in the buggy.

After they heard her slam the door shut behind them, Phil sat down, “So . . . what do you want to then?”

“Confined to the sofa, by order of my daughter, there’s not much we can do really is there?” Sam complained.

“How about a DVD?” Phil suggested.

“Yeah ok”, Sam replied, she pointed towards her TV. “Have a look down there, all our DVD’s are down there. Most of them are Abi’s, but there might be something you fancy.”

Several moments later, Phil had dwindled the selection down to two: ‘The Grudge’ or ‘Love Actually’. Phil had seen neither and decided he’d give Sam the decision.

He turned to Sam, “Right, you’ve got a choice, horror or romantic comedy?”

Sam contemplated for a minute; “I think I’ve had enough horror in my life over the last few days.”

“So, the comedy it is then.”

Sam couldn’t suppress her urge to giggle: for some reason, she suddenly couldn’t get the image of Phil blubbing at the end of a romantic film.

Phil noticed her and asked “What?”

“You’re actually going to sit here and watch a romantic film with me?”

“Why not?”

Sam shrugged, “Go on then, put it on.”

Phil did as he was told and picking up the remote, went to sit on Sam’s armchair.

Half an hour passed and Phil couldn’t concentrate on the film at all: for 2 reasons. One was the fact it was totally not his kind of film at all. The other was the fact that Sam was sitting so close to him and all he wanted to do was to hold her and tell her how glad he was that she was ok.

Sam was pretty bored: she had watched this film so many times with Abi, (it’s her favourite film), she knew all the words. She thought back to the conversation she had had with Jo in the hospital, what Jo had told her about the way Phil really felt about her.

Suddenly Phil got to feet, interrupting her thoughts, “You want a drink?”

“A glass of water would be great thanks Phil”.

He left the room for the kitchen and returned a few minutes later carrying two glasses of water.

He handed one to her and as he turned to make his way back to the armchair, Sam reached out to touch his arm and said “Phil, will you sit with me?” She hutched up a bit on the sofa to make room for him, and once he was settled, she leant into him, resting her head on his shoulder, and curling her legs up to her body, against Phil’s legs.

“You ok?” Phil asked, concern evident in his voice.

“I am now”, she replied, closing her eyes, content to just lie there in Phil’s arms, with not a care in the world.

Phil could feel Sam’s chest rise and fall against his own. They moulded together perfectly.

A couple of hours later, Sam was woken by the shrill sound of the telephone ringing. Just as she was about to open her eyes to try and make the horrific sound stop, it did; as if by magic.

Then she remembered where she was, and more importantly, who she was with, more specifically, who she was lying on. She could smell Phil’s aftershave and couldn’t help but snuggle into his shoulder a little more.
It took her a few moments to fully wake up and by this time, Phil was just hanging up the phone. “Hey sleepy head”, he said, staring down at her lovingly. “That was Abi, she’s staying at Rose’s tonight with Dylan, She was worried about leaving you, but when I told her you were asleep, she seemed to stop worrying so much. I hope you don’t mind”

Sam just about managed to pull herself out of Phil’s embrace. “No, of course not, she needs to get out more. Since she had Dylan, she’s been pretty excluded. How long have I been asleep?” she asked, noticing that it was now dark outside.

Phil shrugged, “A couple of hours. You looked so peaceful, I didn’t have the heart to wake you.”

He got to his feet, “Well, I suppose I better be going home. Leave you to get some rest.”

“Phil, I’ve done nothing but rest for over a week.” Then she decided to take a chance. “Why don’t you stay here tonight Phil? It’s already late and with Abi gone, there’s plenty of room. What do you think? Think you can stomach yet another night of my nagging?”

“I don’t want to put you out Sam.”

“Phil, why would I have offered if I didn’t want you to stay? We could always watch the end of that DVD.”

“Oh yeah, coz the first half was that exciting”, Phil noted sarcastically.

“Ok, maybe not the film. I just don’t want to be on my own tonight Phil.”

Phil had never seen this side of Sam before: vulnerable and desperate to be loved. It was a side of her he wanted to protect with all his strength.

Before he had a chance to reply, Sam was kissing him, kissing him hard, wrapping her arms around his neck, pushing her body against his, willing him to return her passion.

He felt his own passion rise up within him, he was so desperate to touch her and have her completely but he made himself stop.

“Sam, wait . . . “ he began, scared that he was taking advantage of her when she was most vulnerable.
But nothing about her seemed vulnerable now, “Just kiss me”, she told him and he was only too happy to comply.

The next morning, Sam awoke to see Phil lying in bed beside her. “Morning” she greeted. Then paused, “Were you watching me sleep?” she questioned, a little confused at his rather strange behaviour.

“Most beautiful sight in the world”, he complimented. “How’d you feel about last night?” he asked her, just wanting to make sure she didn’t regret anything.

Sam leaned over, resting her head on Phil’s bare chest, “Last night was . . . magical” she told him, trying to find the right words to describe all the happiness and love she felt inside her: feelings she hadn’t felt in a very, very, long time. “What about you?” she asked, looking up at him.

He looked down into those huge green eyes and had never seen such beauty and love, “What do you think?” he replied with a smile.

Chapter 8

2 months later . . .

As had been the usual for the last 2 months, Sam and Phil walked into Sun Hill CID together, holding hands.

They had both been so surprised at how happy everyone was for them, once they found out the news. Of course, no one could keep a secret in this place, and so it wasn’t long before the whole station knew.

The office was practically full, and after a few smart comments from various colleagues about what had made the two DS’s slightly later than normal, Sam and Phil separated, each heading to their own desks.

Sam and Jo had become increasingly closer friends over the last couple of months, while Phil and Neil seemed to have come to a mutual understanding, if not a close friendship.

Jo walked over to Sam’s desk, sitting on the corner, asking “So, any new juicy gossip to tell me Sarge?”

“Well . . . “ Sam began, unable to resist winding the brunette DC up, “I can see a mountain of paperwork on your desk, and word has it that Inspector Manson is going to be checking up on us later on.”

“Well, if that’s the case”, Jo retorted, playing along, “Seen as your pile is ooo, I’d say at least twice the size of mine, I’d better leave you alone to get on with it. I’ll just go and get myself a cup of coffee.” She got up of the desk and turned the leave.

“Black, with no sugar, thanks.” Sam called after her. Jo turned round and rolled her eyes at Sam, before smiling and heading out to the coffee machine.

“Enroling slaves then are we?” Phil teased her from the room.

“DS Hunter, could you please not listen in on other peoples private conversations.”

“Well, DS Nixon, barking commands across the room at your chosen victim of the day is hardly, what I’d call a private conversation.”

Over in the corner of the room, Terry, Ramani and Zain had been reviewing evidence for an upcoming court case, but paused now to listen to the all too familiar banter between Sam and Phil.

“They’re like a couple of school kids”, Zain said, with a smile.

“Can you believe what a change there’s been?” Ramani asked the two lads. “Sam was always so proper and private and now she just seems so . . . happy!”

“They’re not the only ones”, Terry informed her, taking her hand, before returning their attention back to the ongoing feud.

Zain rolled his eyes, feeling rather left out by all this coupley mushy stuff that was going on, before also turning back to Sam and Phil.

“’Scuse me? Are you calling me a dog?” Sam asked, getting up from her desk and walking towards Phil as menacing as she could manage.

Sam was aware that the whole office was watching them, but she didn’t care. She felt like she could do anything; face anything when she was with Phil.

Jack Meadows had appeared at the door, about to take Phil and Zain out on a job, when he noticed what was happening and lent against the door, amused. He liked both Sam and Phil. Admittedly, Phil had been a loose cannon when he first arrived, but he had settled down somewhat now. Jack thought he was at heart, a good copper, and having someone like Sam around on a permanent basis might help kick him into even better shape.

Phil couldn’t help but laugh now. He couldn’t believe how open Sam was now about their relationship, she had always wanted to keep work and play separate, but here she was, winding him up, teasing him for everyone to see. “And what if I am DS Nixon? What you gonna do about it?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know, Mr Hunter?”

Sam was now stood at the side of Phil’s desk, one hand resting on it, while she had the other placed on her hip, trying her best to look intimidating.

Phil grabbed her hand off the desk, pulling her towards him for a kiss.
The whole office cheered as they embraced. Breaking apart, Sam felt a little embarrassed, especially when she saw Jack stood in the doorway.

“Err . . . Guv”, Sam stuttered, “we were just . . .” Sam looked down at Phil, as she tried to come up with a good excuse why she was kissing her boyfriend in office hours, before realising there was no excuse and they were probably going to tell in trouble for it.

“I could see what you were doing Sam”, Jack replied sternly. He’d decided to try and wind them up himself, but couldn’t keep up the act any longer, and broke into a little chuckle. “Don’t look so terrified Sam. You two liven this place up. I can’t remember what we used to do for laughs before you got together.”

Seeing the DCI was not angry with them, Sam went back to winding her boyfriend up, “Oh, that’s easy Guv, we just wound Phil up.”

Everyone laughed again, except Phil, who shot Sam a dirty look. “Ha ha, very funny. Right comic act you are, you should be on stage.” Phil looked away and muttered, “As a clown.”

“Oi, I heard that”, Sam told him, as she slapped his arm.

“Well, as much as I hate to break this little double act up, I need Phil and Zain to come visit a crime scene with me.”

“Guv” they both replied at once, before Phil kissed Sam on the cheek, they grabbed their coats and headed out after the DCI.

Just as they were leaving, Jo came back, two warm coffees in her hands.

“You missed the show”, Terry informed her, as she set one of the coffees on Sam’s desk and made her way over to her own.

“Oh shut up and get on with your work Terry”, Sam told him with a smile.

“Do I even want to ask?” Jo asked with a note of caution.

“No” Sam replied, getting up from her desk and heading towards the door, “I’ll be back in a minute.”

“Chicken”, Terry called after her playfully.

Jo had been downstairs to assist on an interview with DC Suzie Sim. She wasn’t involved in the case, but DC Mickey Webb was busy with some evidence, so Jo had offered to sit in. Once finished, and Suzie had assured her she had everything under control when Mickey returned, Jo made her way to the toilets.

As she pushed her way through the door, she thought she could hear someone crying. She stopped for a moment, listening, but there was nothing.

“Hello?” she called, hoping she wasn’t going senile at such a young age. “Anybody here?”

There was a sniff, before a woman said, “Yeah Jo, I’m here.”

Jo couldn’t hide her surprise, “Sarge? I thought you’d been a long time. What you doing in here? Laying an egg?”

Jo heard the toilet flush, a bolt being pulled back and out stepped Sam, panda-eyes obvious from where she had been crying.
“Sam, whatever’s the matter?” She had never seen Sam looking so vulnerable before, even when she was in the hospital, she had seemed like the fighter she was. But now, here, she looked so afraid, so alone and so depleted, as though she had just given up. “Sam, you were just upstairs laughing, you were fine. Sam? Please tell me what’s wrong.”

Sam walked towards the sink, drying her eyes on some tissue, and stifling back an enormous sob.

“I didn’t even realise. God, I’m so stupid.”

“What do you mean Sam?”

“ I didn’t even realise”, Sam repeated. She turned to face Jo. “I’ve just been so happy, what with Phil and everything, I’ve been on cloud nine. I totally forgot about my period.”

Jo was starting to understand. “You’re late?”

Sam couldn’t hold back her tears any longer; she cried uncontrollably for several minutes, while Jo pulled her into a hug and tried to comfort her.

“There could be a number of reasons Sam.”

“No, I’m . . . I’m pregnant Jo, I’ve . . . It’s in there.” She pointed towards the cubicle she had emerged from.
Jo let her go, to find a pregnancy test on the shelf at the back of the toilet.

It was most definitely positive.

Wow it's so good. I like how she's actually know's, she ain't just assuming. Possibly, if Sam's having second thoughts about the baby then, you could nick/borrow what happened in friends. Jo makes her take another one, Jo say's it's negative, Sam realises that she did actually want the baby, then Jo tells her that she was lying for a reation. Sam's surprised and happy. OR Sam tells Phil who is so happy that it makes Sam realise that she does want a baby with him. Just ideas, I bet you've already got a great idea. Oh well, just thought I'd suggest it.

i think that Sam is the sort of character that could cut phill out and choose not to tell him over fear of being hurt if he doesnt want kids. when Abi went missing Sam was a nightmare shouting and taking things out on everyone else and herself. i can imagine she would do the same if she found out she was pregnant!

Chapter 9

“I don’t understand”, Sam continued. She was still crying, but she seemed to have regained a little more of her composure. “We were always so careful, how could this happen? Maybe the test was wrong?” She looked up at Jo, hope glistening in her eyes.

“Do you want it to be wrong?” Jo asked her.

“I . . . I don’t know . . . maybe . . . what’s Phil going to say. He’s going to think I planned it, that I’m some kind of slapper.”

“Sam, Phil would never think that and you know it. I know he’ll stick by you whatever, and anyway, he might even be happy at the idea of you two having a baby together.”

“But he’s already two kids who he never sees. He loved Maddy and Alfie so much and it broke his heart when they left. I can’t believe I’ve done this to him, he’s going to hate me.”

Sam’s sobs became harder once more, as Jo pulled her into yet another hug stroking the back of her back, trying to calm her down. “But that was different”, she told her, “I don’t know about Maddy’s mum, but it was clear to everyone that he never loved Kate, and certainly not the way that he loves you.”

Sam looked down at the floor, “You know, I’ve never actually told him.”

Jo was confused. “What? That you love him?”

“When I’m with him, it just feels so right. I just don’t want to spoil the moment. I don’t want to scare him off.”

“Sam, I honestly don’t think you could, even if you wanted to. Look at all the times you rejected him, and he’s still here isn’t he?”

“Thanks for reminding me Jo”, Sam said sarcastically. “Another thing he probably hates me for.”

“That’s not what I meant.” She looked straight at Sam. “Do you want this baby?”

“I don’t know, I want me and Phil . . . I think so . . . I don’t know . . . I don’t know if I can bring up another baby on my own. I love Abi with all my heart, but I’m not going to pretend it was easy being a single mother.”
Jo couldn’t help but giggle at Sam’s outrageous outburst. “Sam do you hear yourself? You’re talking like Phil’s left the country or something. He’s upstairs for god sake. Talk to him. Just be honest with him, I’ll you find him more receptive than you think.”

“I can’t Jo, I’ll . . . He’ll . . .”

“Hey, no arguments ok?”

Sam looked defeated.

“Now, clean yourself up and I’ll see you back upstairs in a minute ok?”

Sam nodded.

Back upstairs . . .

As Sam walked in half an hour later, she noticed that Phil was on the phone. She saw Jo sat at her desk, who gave her a little wink and thumbs up as she made her way over to his desk.

She stopped by the side of his desk, waited patiently until he had finished his call. She was kind of surprised and a little bit hurt when, upon noticing her, he swivelled round on his chair so it was harder for her to hear what he was saying.

Stop it Sam, now you’re just being paranoid, she scolded herself. She had decided that Jo was right and that even if Phil wanted nothing to do with her or the baby once he found out, he at least had the right to know.

Several moments later, Phil put the phone down, turning back round so he was facing Sam. “Hey, what’s up?” he asked.

Sam didn’t know where to begin, “There’s something I need to tell you Phil. I . . . “

“Phil, Zain, I need you quick. There’s been another shooting at the Larkmeed Estate, possibly related to yesterdays. Meet you outside in 2 minutes.”

“Guv” they both replied, before Phil turned to look at Sam, “Can it wait?”

Sam knew she had lost her chance for the moment. “Yeah, sure, go ahead.”

“Ok, I’ll see you later”, he told her, kissing her on the forehead before leaving the office with Zain.

As she returned to her desk, Jo came over “You didn’t get a chance to tell him then?”

“No, the DCI got there first.”

Sam knew she had no reason to be angry with Phil. It wasn’t as if he’d run out on her for no good reason, the DCI had needed him, and while in the office, she knew the job had to come first.

Then why can’t I shake the feeling that something is wrong? She asked herself. Who was he on the phone to? Why did he turn his back on me?

Jo interrupted her thoughts, “Well, I’m sure he’ll be back soon. I have to go out for a bit, you going to be ok?”

“Sure”, Sam replied a little distant, “I’ll see you later”.

At the end of the day . . .

Phil and Zain were just returning from the wild goose chase the DCI had called an OBBO. They had been camped out in front a suspected armed burglar all day to no avail. The most exciting part of the day had been when a cat knocked over a bin in front of the house, searching for scraps.

“Well” Phil began, sarcasm dripping from his voice, “It’s days like these that remind me why I joined the police force.”

“Tell me about it” Zain replied.

Just as Sam walked back into the office after interviewing a very un-co-operative witness, Phil’s phone rang.

“DS Hunter” Phil answered, picking up the receiver. Sam looked over just in time to see Phil look up at her, look back down again, and lower his voice, so he couldn’t be heard.

Once the call was finished, he looked over at Zain, “How about that drink then Zain?”

Zain looked confused, “Sarge?”

“You know?” Phil replied, “The one I promised to buy you if nothing happened on our OBBO today”.
Zain shrugged, “Sure, whatever, I’m not gonna refuse a free pint.”

Phil walked over to Sam, “You don’t mind do you? I said we’d go straight there and I did promise him earlier.”

Sam tried not to betray the disappointment she felt inside: she had really wanted to talk to Phil alone tonight.

“No, course not, I’ll see you later.”

“Actually, I might be late, you know what Zain can be like once he gets going, he might stop. I’ll stay at my flat tonight and then I don’t disturb you. I’ll see you in the morning.”

With that, he gave her a quick kiss, picked up his coat and headed to the exit.

Sam stood there for several moments, in a kind of stunned silence. Unintentionally, she looked at of the window to see Phil and Zain shaking hands, before getting into their separate cars, which confused Sam.

If they’re going to the pub, what’s the point in taking both of their cars when they’ll have to get a taxi home anyway?
They’re not going to the pub at all she realised, with a sinking feeling, so where is Phil going that’s such a secret.
Wait, maybe they decided to go home and get changed first, she tried to reason with herself, but she couldn’t seem to muster up the energy to believe that theory all the way home, as she got ready for bed or eventually, after much tossing and turning, drifted off to a fitful sleep.

The next morning, Sam pulled into the car park at just the same time as Jo. Noticing that Sam was alone for the first time in a long time, Jo walked over to her car, and perching on the edge of the bonnet, asked sympathetically, ”You ok Sarge?”

Sam usually hated sympathy, she didn’t want people to think she was weak and vulnerable, but today, she just didn’t seem to notice. “I tried to tell Phil last night . . . and he brushed me off . . . then supposedly went to the pub with Zain . . . but hey left in separate cars . . . and he’s having these private phone calls and . . . “All of Sam’s fears, which had been rolling round in her head suddenly came out in a big, jumbled mass. “I think maybe he’s . . .” her shoulders sagged and her voice became quieter as she barely whispered, “I think he’s found somebody else.”

Jo had never seen her superior look so defeated, “Sam, I very much doubt it. Phil practically worships the ground you walk on. It’s so obvious how much you mean to him. He’s like a different person around you.”

“Well obviously he’s moved on”, Sam snapped, feeling more angry now, rather than sad. “I’m going to go and find out who she is. Right now!”
Sam stalked off in the direction of the station, while Jo hurried to keep up with her.

“Sam wait, are you sure this is a good idea?”

Sam heard Jo, but chose to ignore her protests as she raced up to CID.

Bursting through the office doors, she didn’t seem to notice that the office was practically full with nearly every officer there, as it was around the shift changing time. But it didn’t matter: she was entirely focused on Phil as she saw him sitting at his desk, looking over some case notes and sipping a cup of hot coffee.

He turned to look at her, “Hey gorgeous”, he acknowledged her entrance, giving her grin that usually melted her heart and let him get away with anything.

Not this time Hunter.

She was fuming now. “So that’s it then? A bit of the old Hunter charm and you think you get away with murder? Well, it’s not gonna work anymore Phil. I’ve had enough.”

Phil set down his mug; a look of total bewilderment crossed his face. “Sam, are you ok? What are you on about? I haven’t murdered anyone?”

“No, you just cheat and deceive people and then think you can lie your way out of it.” She was even angrier now he was pretending not to know what she meant, that he was pretending she was the stupid one.

“Sam, I’m sorry, but I really don’t know what you mean. Have I done something to upset you?”

“Damn right you have. I don’t know about your other girlfriends in the past Phil, but I’m not gonna put up with secret little phone conversations, being lied to, cheated on, and to top it all off, being made to look like a total idiot at work.”

She turned to Zain, “Have a good time at the pub last night Zain?”

Zain looked down at the floor, obviously uncomfortably at being put on the spot.

“Thanks”, she told him.

“What for?” he asked.

“For not lying to me. For not pretending you at the pub last night with Phil.”

Phil stood up, taking Sam’s arms, “Sam, stop it, listen to me. I was gonna do this tonight but if you wanna do it here, well, here’s good for me.”

He reached inside his jacket pocket, pulled out a small burgundy velvet box, and knelt on one knee on the floor. He opened the box to reveal the most beautiful ring Sam had ever seen, a sliver ring, with a simple cluster of white diamonds in the centre; simple yet perfect. He still had hold of her arm, and sliding his hand down, so he held her hand, he looked into her deep green eyes and asked, Samantha Nixon, will you marry me?”

Sam was too shocked for words.

Phil continued, “That’s what the phone calls were Sam. The first one was me booking a table at Billabongs Wine Bar in town, where I was going to take you tonight to ask you. And then, last night it was the jewellers, I arranged to have this ring specially made for you, and I was arranging a time to go and pick it up. I wanted to get it as soon as possible, so when they rang and said it was ready for me to go and collect, I made up a story about going to the pub, and Zain came with me to collect it. I stayed at home last night, because I didn’t trust myself not to say anything to you, I was so excited and yet, I wanted it to be special.”

Throughout Phil’s entire explanation for the last day or so, Sam had felt tears forming behind her eyes: tears of embarrassment as she realised what a fool she had been and tears of joy at the prospect of being Mrs Hunter.

“Phil, I . . . I’m so sorry, I thought . . . “

“Just say yes.”

“Yes” she nearly shouted, “Of course I will, I’d love too.”

Phil grabbed her around the waist and spun her ground, before setting her back down on the floor and slipping the white gold engagement ring onto her finger. Sam admired it, before noticing Jo, who gave her an encouraging look.

“Phil, while we’re on the subject, I think we better make it a double celebration.”

Phil frowned at her.

“I’m pregnant.”

“You are?” Phil was so surprised. “And you’re ok with it?”

“I am if you are”, she replied, searching his face for some kind of reaction.

“Are you mad? Of course I am.” He hugged her tightly again and whispered into her ear, “I love you more than anything in the world Sam, and I’m never going to let you go.”

“Glad to hear it Phil, because I love you too, and you know what that means don’t you? You’re never getting rid of me either.”

They both grinned at each like some sort of maniacs, as the whole office erupted once again in cheers and congratulations.

Chapter 11

10 months later . . .

“So, are you nervous yet?” an excited Jo asked for about the hundredth time that morning.

She was stood behind Sam, who was putting the finishing touches to her make-up, in front of a huge mirror, which sat on top of an old oak dresser. Sam could see Abi in the mirror; sat on the bed, feeding Dylan.

Sam, Jo and Abi had spent the night in the most expensive hotel in London with baby Dylan and baby Libby. Sam had given birth a month earlier, and after a week of arguing over names for their little baby girl, Sam and Phil had finally decided on Libby as the most suitable name.

“Of course not”, Sam replied. Upon noticing Jo’s raised eyebrow, she amended to “Ok, maybe a little. Oh my God, what time is it?”

Jo couldn’t help but giggle, “You’re terrified aren’t you?” she probed further, wanting to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth, as it were, not that Sam in any way resembled a horse.

“Oh, leave her alone Jo” Abi joined in. “She has a right to be nervous on her wedding day.”

“I’m not nervous”, Sam informed them, “just . . . excited I guess. I just don’t want there to be any problems today, that’s all”.

“Well, you are marrying Phil Hunter” Jo teased, mocking seriousness. Then she smiled, “Nah, I’m just kidding, there won’t be any problems today Sam.”, Jo assured her, “Not if I have anything to do with it anyway”.

“Me too”, Abi added.

“Thanks guys, I’m just so happy. I’ve been waiting for this day for so long, I couldn’t bear it if anything went wrong.”

“Hey”, Jo protested, gesturing towards Abi, “You’ve got the two most sensible, caring and organised people as your bridesmaids. What could possibly go wrong?”

Crying erupted from the master bedroom the second Jo finished her sentence, where up until that moment, Libby had been sleeping soundly.

“I’m on it”, Abi announced, placing Dylan back in his carrier, content for the moment playing with a stuffed giraffe that made a noise when hugged. She made her way into Sam’s bedroom, while Sam turned round on her chair to face Jo, “Famous last words”, she told her bridesmaid.

_______________________________________________

Across town, Phil was staying at Zain’s house, with Zain, Terry and Neil. They had attempted to give Phil a stag do last night but, much to the utter shock of all his colleagues, he had retired to bed after only a couple of pints, declaring that he wanted to be at his best for his beautiful bride the following day.

Leaving to the parting shot of “Alright, where’s the real Phil Hunter and what have you done with his body?” from Jack Meadows, Phil, his best man Zain, Terry and Neil had returned to Zain’s to get some sleep before the big day.

“Zain, have you seen my jacket?” Phil was rushing around like a mad man, trying to find all of his clothes, so he could get dressed. “I can’t find it anywhere. What time is it?”

“Phil, will you calm down. You’ve got another hour before we have to even set off. Stop panicking will you? And your jackets over there, hanging on the back of the door where you left it last night”>

“Right, yeah, course it is, thanks”. Phil took the jacket and made his way into Zain’s bathroom. He was determined to be at that church early, waiting when Sam arrived.

_______________________________________________

As soon as the familiar music started, Phil turned to see Sam, his Sam, walking down the aisle towards him, on the arm of her father. She smiled at him from beneath her veil and he grinned back at her.

She looks like an angel, he thought to himself.

Sam knew everyone was focused in on her, but the only eyes she could feel were Phil’s, watching her from the front of the church. She locked eyes with him and smiled, not fully believing this was finally happening.

I must be dreaming, she thought, I’m so lucky.

As she reached Phil, he lifted the veil from over her face, smiled once more at her beautiful features, as they turned towards the vicar, hand in hand. They had chosen to write their own vows, to make it more personal and memorable to one another.

The vicar began; “We are joined today to witness the matrimonial joining of Samantha Nixon and Phillip Hunter.”

He gestured toward the audience, “If anyone here today knows of any reason why these two should be joined in holy matrimony, then speak now, or forever hold your peace”.

After a moments silence, he continued, “Phillip, you may continue”.

Phil turned, so that he was facing Sam. He took both of her hands in his own. “Sam, I love you more and more each day. You’re the most special, beautiful, fun and loving person I have ever met. Everyday, I thank God for sending you to me, for allowing me to fall in love with the last angel left on earth. Sam, everything I have is yours and I promise to protect you and love you everyday for the rest of our lives”.

Sam felt a tear slip down her cheek at Phil’s words. They meant so much to hear him say those things in front of all these people. She knew in her heart that he meant every one. She squeezed his hand to let him know how much she loved him too.

The vicar turned to Sam, “Samantha, and your turn”.

“Phil, when we first met, I couldn’t stand you. I thought you were arrogant, rude and obnoxious and I could have quite happily slapped you whenever you walked into the same room as me.”

The entire church rang out in laughter, as Phil gave his best wounded expression.

Sam continued, “However, over the last couple of years we’ve grown closer and closer. So close, in fact, that now I couldn’t ever imagine my life without you. You have opened my eyes and my heart to true love again and I thank you so much for being here for me everyday. Phil, I was born to love you, and I always will.”

“Have you got the rings?” the vicar asked. Zain held out the red velvet cushion they were placed on.

Sam took Phil’s first. The vicar continued, “Do you, Phillip Hunter, take the Samantha Nixon to be your lawfully wedded wife?”

“I do”. Sam pushed on his ring, which slid perfectly into place.

“And do you, Samantha Nixon, take the Phillip Hunter to be your lawfully wedded husband?”

“I do”. Phil did the same, placing the diamond ring on Sam’s finger.

“You may kiss the bride”, the vicar told Phil.

“About time”, Gina Gold shouted from a couple of rows back. Everyone laughed and cheered as Sam put her arms around Phil’s neck and he stooped to kiss her.

As they left the church, they were flowered with confetti, as they made their way to the car to take them back to Sam’s hotel, where they were holding the reception.

Once Sam and Phil had shared the traditional first romantic dance, Phil had retreated to the bar with the lads, while Sam remained on the dance floor with Jo and some of the girls.

The music wasn’t too loud, and Abi sat with Dylan and Libby in the corner, just happy to see that her mum was finally getting some of the happiness she deserved. She had Dylan sat next to her in his carrier, while Libby was sat on the table in hers.

After a while, Phil approached Abi, “Hey”. He took hold of Libby’s stuffed giraffe, and tickled her nose with it to make her smile.

“Hey” she replied. “You ok?”

“I am now”, he told her. I’m just so glad everything went without a glitch today. Your mum deserves that”.

“She does”, Abi agreed, “And so do you for making her so happy Phil”.

Phil smiled in the direction of the dance floor, where Sam was currently dancing to the ketchup song with Gina, Jo and Honey Harman.

He turned back to Abi, “So, are you sure you can manage looking after two babies for a couple of days? We can always take this little one with us you know?”

“Phil, now you sound like mum. I had to practically beg her to leave her with us. You two need some alone time. There’ll be plenty of time for nappies and sick when you get back”.

“Wow, you make parenting sound like so much fun”, Phil commented.

“Wouldn’t swap it for the world”, Abi told him, looking down at Dylan and feeling so much love for him. “Besides”, she said, looking back towards the dance floor where Sam’s parents were attempting to dance, “I have a feeling Grandma and Granddad aren’t going to be going anywhere soon.”

“I just want you to be sure. I don’t want you to think we’re taking advantage.”

“Phil, I offered didn’t I? You’re only going away for 5 days, not 5 months.”

Phil smiled at Abi, “Thanks”.

“No problem”, Abi replied, just as Sam made her way over.

“What you two whispering about over in the corner?” she asked, feigning suspicion.

“Oh nothing”, Phil replied, “Just about your lack of dancing ability.”

“Think you can do better?” she asked him.

“I wouldn’t want to embarrass you Sam”, he answered.

“Embarrass me? Yeah, that sounds about right.”

“Oi”, he said, playfully smacking her on the arm.

Sam turned to her daughter. “Thanks for everything today Abi, you’ve been great. I don’t think I’d have made it through the day without you”.

“I’m just glad you’re finally happy mum”.

Sam grabbed Phil’s hand across the table. “I am.”

“Abi?” Jo was shouting from the dance floor, “Come on, come and have a dance”.
She looked at her mum, who nodded, “Go ahead, I’ll look after these two.

“Right then, I’ll leave you two lovebirds too it then”, she said with a wink, before scurrying off to meet Jo before either Phil or Sam could say a word.

“Sam?”

“Yeah?”

“Did you mean it? What you said? About being happy?”

She looked deep into his eyes, “More than you’ll ever know”, she replied.

“Me too”, he agreed, pulling her into a hug. “Me too”.
