I was just thinking that. Although I guess this would depend on whether this father figure adopted him or not, I think Kathy had Ben's last name changed but I can't remember if he adopted Ben. :confused: Also he might die with Kathy (like what happened with Chloe/Rebecca) so it might not be silly at all. We don't know the full story yet.

How stupid EE are for kiling off a classic character in Kathy Beale. First they kill off Angie and now it's Kathy's turn. Gillian Taylforth always said she'd go back to EE one day, just not right now. I cannot believe they are going to justify this storyline by killing off the character.

They could have done this storyline without killing her off. Perhaps her new husband dies in a road accident? Maybe she is injured in the crash as well so she is too incapacitated to bring up Ben? There are loads of ways of bringing Ben back without killing the character off. Who else are they going to kill off: Carol Jackson? Michelle Fowler?.. :rolleyes:

I have no problems with them killing Kathy, the actress had her chance to come back and she said no numerous times. I don't understand how it is pathetic to kill Kathy. Kathy is a past character who is unlikely to ever return. Phil and Peggy are existing characters that need to move forward as characters and for the Mitchell family to be built up again as it is rather stale. EE has obligations to its present cast and characters not to its past cast and characters who may, when it suits them, decide to come back.

I think it all depends on the character as to whether they decide to kill off past characters. I would say Michelle should stay alive as poor Sharon needs her for when she has to go and do some mourning and their is still the secret about Mark Junior's real parentage. Michelle is the only one who knows so they should keep her alive just for that, as she is a potential, explosive storyline just waiting to happen. Kathy on the other hand, has no such storyline potential, IMO. I would hate for them to start killing off every past character but sometimes the killing of a past character is okay, if the potential storylines justify it.

I hope they remember that Ben is slightly deaf as well.

Phil hasn't been able to see Ben as much as he'd like, but he does speak to him on the phone sometimes. I think Kathy would probably want Ben to go to her new husband, because Ben knows him better, and he's got a life out there, with a school that he's probably adjusted to. Also it wasn't so long ago that Kathy wanted this new guy to adopt Ben, so it doesn't seem like he regards Phil as important in their life.

Although when she was in the square she did love Phil a lot. I think there's probably still feelings there.

I'm not so sure. Kathy and Phil were married and Ben is down as Phil's son. Maybe it's different if the person has been living abroad for so many years, and it would be in the childs' best interests to stay in Africa, where he's been brought up. But legally I don't think a mother can keep their child from their father, unless he's not down on the birth certificate, or he's been arrested for crimes involving child abuse, rape etc., and she's got an injunction against him.

Full custody is probably more difficult to get, but I think a father would at least be given the opportunity to say his piece.

I think if the will said who Kathy wanted to be Ben's guardian ie if she said Ian, then Ben would go to Ian. However Phil could contest that in court, and fight for sole or joint custody, just like any other will can be contested.

Yes I don't think there's any question that Phil will get him eventually. He does not let go of his kids without a fight, and Ian is no competition for Phil. Ian might try and win Ben, because he'll think it's what his mum would have wanted, but I'm not sure that Kathy would want him to go to Ian rather than Phil. Kathy knows how much Phil loves Ben.

Either Beale The Squeal has just had his treasured discount card for the cash 'n' carry withdrawn! Or he's just realised that the bust-up with Jane about visiting mum Kathy in South Africa was a waste of time - and his ticket an unnecessary extravagance.

For Kaff is tragically killed in a car crash. And if this is such a shock to Ian, just imagine how Footballers' Wives' star Gillian Taylforth feels when she sits down to watch Enders and discovers the character she made famous has been unceremoniously bumped off.

Like other famous off-screen deaths - such as Cindy (Michelle Collins) and the legendary Angie (Anita Dobson) - Kathy effectively left the soap eight years ago. But that has never made her less of a presence, with frequent references to her and, of course, to the well-being of Ben, her son with Philthy Phil Mitchell.

In denial at first, it takes Ian two days finally to break down in Martin's arms and make plans to fly to South Africa to see Ben. So he didn't waste the cost of an air fare after all!

She's an iconic character from the past. EE are, bit by bit, destroying the roots of the show that made it what it is. Pete, Cindy, Angie and now Kathy are being slayed off screen, and it leaves a huge vacuum in the show's history. The only living characters from the beginning who aren't in Walford at present are Michelle, Nick, and Sharon. That is bad.
